• Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. • How do functional languages handle random numbers?

  What I mean about that is that in nearly every tutorial I've read about functional languages, is that one of the great things about functions, is that if you call a function with the same parameters twice, you'll always end up with the same result. How on earth do you then make a function that takes a seed as a parameter, and then returns a random number based on that seed? I mean this would seem to go against one of the things that are so good about functions, right? Or am I completely missing something here?

  i just started developing using box2d on flixel and i realise the pivot point of the rotation of an object in box2d is set to the center of an object. i had read on forums and i found out that SetAsBox can change the pivot point of the object, however, i cannot seem to get it work to rotate about a point. what i would like to achieve is to rotate an object about a point like earth revolving around the sun. any one can help me with it? really thanks a lot and sorry for the bad english

• Should I add old code into my repository?

  I've got an SVN repository of a PHP site and the last programmer didn't use source control properly. As a result, only code since I started working here is in the Repo. I have a bunch of old copies of the full code base saved in files as "backups" but they're not in source control. I don't know why most of the copies were saved nor do I have any reasonable way to tag them to a version number. Due to upgrades to the frameworks and database drivers involved, the old code is quite defunct; it no longer works on the current server config. However, the previous programmers had some...unique...logic, so I hate to be completely without old copies to refer to what on earth they were doing. Should I keep this stuff in version control? How? Wall off the old code in separate Tags/branches?

• Computer vision algorithms (how is this possible?)

  I recently stumbled across a company that has created what appears to be a computer vision technology that is capable of detecting shoplifting automatically and alert its users. LINK Watching some of the videos and examples provided by the company has left me completely baffled and amazed as to how on earth they may have achieved this functionality. I understand that no-one here will be able to tell me exactly how this may have been achieved but is anyone aware - and could point me to - research in this field or alternatively perhaps provide details as to how something like this could be implemented or guidance of where one might start? My understanding was the computer vision algorithms were many years away from being this sophisticated. Is this sort of application really possible? Anyone willing to hazard a guess at how they achieved this?

• 3D BSP rendering for maps made in 2d platform style

  I wish to render a 3D map which is always seen from top, camera is in sky and always looking at earth. Sample of a floor layout: I don't think I need complex structures like BSP trees to render them. I mean I can divide the map in grids and render them like done in 2D platform games. I just want to know if this is a good idea and what may go wrong if I don't choose a BSP tree rendering here. • Analog sticks not working, qtsixa+PCSX combination

  A few days ago I finally got my PS3 controller to work with QtSixA, and then in PCSX after some tweaking with the controls. But, I haven't figured out how on earth I will be able to get the analog sticks working. I've been triyng to add them in the controls for all angles in PCSX, where you move the analog stick the way it's supposed to be and then clicking a button to change the setting. I've enabled joysticks in the options for the controller, and my options in my controller are: [x] Enable buttons [x] Enable sensitive buttons [x] Enable Axis [ ] Enable accellerometers [ ] Enable Acceleration [ ] Enable Speed [ ] Enable position The controller is a standard PS3 controller, Dualshock 3. • Using an open source non-free license

  Are there any projects/products out there that use an open source license that basically says "free for small companies" and "cost money for larger companies" in addition to "make modifications available"? (And are there any standard licenses with such a wording?) If I were to release a project under such a license, would it be automatically shunned by every developer on the face of the earth, or, assuming it is actually a useful project, does it have a fair chance at getting contributions from Joe Programmer? The second part of this question can easily become subjective, but any well argued point of view will be highly appreciated. For example, do dual licensed projects made by commercial entities have success with the open source communities?

• Which of VLC's dependencies causes sound device detection?

  I am setting up a headless music server based on the minimal Ubuntu image. After having installed the packages openssh-server,pulseaudio, libmad0,flac,liboff0,libid3tag0,libvorbis0a,ffmpeg, mpd,mpc,mpdscribble, paman,paprefs,pavumeter neither my internal soundcard nor the external DAC where detected by pulseaudio, that is pactl list did only list the dummy devices. Several reboots did not change that. The hardware devices are detected properly: ~$ lsusb | grep Texas Bus 002 Device 002: ID 08bb:2706 Texas Instruments Japan ~$ lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Following a hunch, I installed vlc with all dependencies. After a reboot, both devices are detected! ~$ pactl list | grep "Sink: alsa_output" Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo Monitor of Sink: alsa_output.usb-Burr-Brown_from_TI_USB_Audio_DAC-00-DAC.analog-stereo Now I would like to remove VLC again but keep the devices. The question is: which of the many dependencies of VLC enables proper device detection? And why on earth is it not a dependency of pulseaudio?

• How are typical users expected to read the documentation in /usr/share/doc?

  I only recently learned that there is a huge pile of documentation in /usr/share/doc. How on earth is a typical user supposed to find out about that? It seems like much of it is gzipped, and inaccessible with administrative privileges: $ gunzip examples/letter.tex.gz gzip: examples/letter.tex: Permission denied Are users expected to duplicate each item in their home directory just to read it, or is there a less tedious solution? This arrangement hardly seems conducive to regular browsing. How do normal people read this documentation?

Its focus is on combining the power and high performance of C and C++ with the programmer productivity of modern languages like Ruby and Python. • Magento not responding to payment gateway notifications fast enough or at all?

  Some of our customers are getting to the confirmation of payment step in purchasing from our Magento store, and then they are getting a timeout error, where the SagePay payment gateway is trying to contact our server to tell it that a payment was successful (or not…) but it cannot contact our server, or cannot get a response from our server in a timely manner, and then the payment/order is being cancelled. I've raised this question to my hosting company, but all they told me was: "This is down to the way the software is configured on your server" This is currently a Magento 1.4.0.1 standard installation as far as payment gateways are concerned. What on earth could this statement mean? Is there some configuration that I need to do to make Magento listen to these requests and respond properly?

• Rotate object Up/Down/Left/Right in any orientation

  I'm rendering model at the origin with a fixed camera looking at it positioned on the z axis. I want to be able to rotate the model up/down and left/right. Currently I have 2 variables, HorizontalRotation and VerticalRotation. When calculating the world matrix I rotate about the Y axis by HorizontalRotation and about the X axis by VerticalRotation. The ..Rotation variables are controlled by pressing up/down/left/right arrow keys. The problem I'm having is that the rotations are happening relative to the object. Lets say it's a model of the world. Pressing Up a bit would let me look at the north pole. Currently when i press right the earth spins infront of the camera on its axis; I'm still looking at the north pole. How can i get it so that no matter what rotations are currently applied i can always rotate my model relative to the camera/world axis?
