on normal mode it freezes.
on safe mode, it tries to log in with user called user (which is mine) but i changed the password..
if i remove the password, everything goes back to normal...
I have a web application that runs a program which needs X. I'm using xvfb to launch it; I want to run it as another user.
I could probably do sudo -u username -p password my command. However, I'm not feeling too good about storing the users password in plain text.
Is there a "smarter" way of doing this?
I'm about to put my database in Full Recovery Model and start taking transaction log backups. I am taking a full nightly backup to another server and later in the evening this file and many others are backed up to tape.
My question is this. I will take hourly (or more if necessary) t-log backups and store them on the other server as well. However, if my full backups are passing DBCC and integrity checks, do I need to put my T-Logs on tape?
If someone wants point in time recovery to yesterday at 2pm, I would need the previous full backup and the transaction logs. However, other than that case, if I know my full back ups are good, is there value in keeping the previous day's transaction log backups?
Hi,
I'm trying to automatically mount a windows share in a Fedora 12 instance (FC12).
When I manually mount things work:
mount -t cifs //nas01/servers -o username=guest,password=myPassword /mnt/nas01/servers
If I update /etc/fstab with the following:
//nas01/servers /mnt/nas01/servers cifs username=guest,password=myPassword 0 0
Nothing happens after reboot.
The thing that has me baffled is after a reboot if I run:
mount -a
The share is mounted.
Any ideas on this?
Thank you,
Martin
I've encountered a strange issue.
I had to change the time on my Linux RHEL cluster system. I've done it using the following command from the root user:
date +%T -s "10:13:13"
After doing this, some message appeared relating to <emerg> #1: Quorum Dissolved however I didn't capture it completely.
In order to investigate the issue I looked at /var/log/messages and I've discovered the following:

How could this be related to the time change procedure I performed?

I'm have trouble transfering files again from my work PC, which is a linux machine to my home windows PC.
My work has changed it so I now need to SSH twice before I can access my PC.
So I need to:
ssh [email protected]
password: xxxxx
I then need to do it again.
ssh computer_name
password: xxxxx
I've tried accessing directly via my computers IP but to of no avail.
Is there a way I can use pscp or file zilla to ssh twice so I can transfer files?
My sister has forgotten her password to vista, however i have installed that system so should know the admin password. However I do not know how to log in as admin. i tried to press ctrl+alt+delete twice in safemode to switch to normal login mode, but its not working.
I heard that admin account is by default turned off in vista, so it might not work.
I'm wondering if it is possible to use gnome-keyring-daemon without X. Normally it will present a graphical prompt in order to acquire a password for the keyring; is there a way around this? I'd like to be able to use ubuntu one without having to start a graphical session and type in my password.
I have ubuntu 8.04lts
and recently a weird problem has been cropping up. every night something happens and in the morning my coworkers cant see the shares. If i try to remote into the machine via ssh i don't get a prompt .
when i rebooted the machine i would get a "video cannot be displayed in this mode" screen and no other activity on the box.
I booted from grub into recovery and tried doing a package repair (keeping my smb.conf) and that didn't seem to do anything after a few other reboots I was able to get it to come up (im not sure what i did)
yesterday it did teh same thing
i booted to recovery then did a repair xserver and it came right up so i thought that resovled the issue but then today
same thing
anyone have any idea on what i can look for (im very new to linux in general)
worst case sennerio can i just reinstall ubuntu over again with out blowing out the data?

Thanks in advance.....
I'm having trouble mounting a share on my XenServer (5.6 FP1). From the command line I try:
mount.cifs //server/share /mnt/share -o credentials=credfile
The contents of credfile is:
username=Administrator
password=What@zR\!p3s
When I run the above mount command I get "Access Denied". However if I run the following command it works:
mount.cifs //server/share /mnt/share -o username=Administrator,password=What@zR\!p3s
Please note the "\" is to escape the bang and I've tried this with and without it in the credentials file. Any suggestions?
I have windows 7 with Ubuntu installed(Wubi installer). I didn't shut down my computer properly I guess because of which now I am getting the following BSOD STOP Error:
0x0000007B (0x80786B58 0xC0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000)
But I am able to boot into Ubuntu without any problems. Now I've ran startup recovery about 3-4 times, tried system restore but nothing changes. I even ran CHKDSK /r /f from recovery console.
I've not tried Fixmbr or Fixboot because I am afraid Ubuntu won't be able to boot then.
Has anyone ever even able to get through this error?
I have been running into issue with my MSSQL Database setup with speed. Here is my scenario.
About 100M Rows
Average: 1k Updates Per Second
Hard Drives: RAID 10 SSD MDF
--Active Time: 0
Log Drives: 1 SSD LDF - Simple Recovery
--Active Time 99.9
--Queue: 8
I do not need a back up of the log so it is set to simple recovery but my bottleneck is still at my log. I get high WAITLOG times and thus it can not update any faster. I can't do bulk updates/transactions and each update needs to be one at a time.
Is my only option to increase write performance of the log drives, add a RAID drives? Any suggestions on increasing the performance?
Here's what worked for over a year: PC A runs Windows 7, PC B runs Windows XP. Both are on the same subnet behind a router. A uses user account X, but logs in to PC B using the Administrator account.
PC B is a Dell Precision 470. A known problem with these is that sometimes when plugging in their power cable they somehow loses all BIOS settings. This happened yesterday. After this happens Windows won't boot, because the default BIOS setting is 'RAID ON' while there is no RAID configured. No problem though, changing the BIOS settings to 'RAID OFF' makes it boot without problems. Note that in the meantime, nothing config-related was changed on machine A. It wasn't even on.
Indeed after doing this, everything is fine. Everything includes all normal operations, remote desktop from PC A to PC B, running Synergy between A and B, accessing shared folders from B to A. But accessing the shared folders on B from A does not work any more.
I tried pretty much everything I found via Google (fiddling with policies/registry kes/...) but no avail.
> ping -a 192.168.2.2
Pinging A [192.168.2.2] with 32 bytes of data:

> net use /persistent:no K: \\192.168.2.2\myshare /user:USERNAME PASSWORD
System error 86 has occurred.
The specified network password is not correct.
A solution to this would be great: I haven't been able to do any work since yesterday ;]
update
after taking the hard drive out of B and putting it in another Precision 470 with almost exactly the same hardware (at first sight, only the video card differs) the shared folders work.. Putting the disk back into A, same problem remains. Why does this depend on hardware, and more important, on which hardware?
Hello,
I want to give remote access to my postresql db (8.2) to computers that are at the same lan, at the default config I have added this line to pg_hba.conf where xxx.xx.xx.xx is the ip of the machine that hosts postgresql. This machine is a windows 2k server.
# IPv4 local connections:
host all all 0.0.0.0/0 password
host all all xxx.xx.xx.xx/24 password
There no firewall or such blocking the connection between and `listen_addresses = '*' for postgresql.conf .
Dear ladies and sirs.
I have a need to create a self signed certificate non interactively. Unfortunately, the only tool that I know of (makecert) is interactive - it uses GUI to ask for a password.
My OS is Windows (from XP to 2008).
The only thing close that I managed to find is http://www.codeproject.com/Tips/125982/How-to-run-Makecert-without-password-window.aspx, however, it is still not good.
Any ideas?
I'm trying to login to my Windows 7 PC from another PC so that I can transfer files to the Windows 7 PC. I've just installed Visual Studio 2008 on my new PC, and I wan't to transfer all of my work from my old machine to my new one.
When I first set up a user on the Windows 7 PC after a reformat, the account created had a Group field that read "HomeUsers; Administrators" when viewing it from the User Accounts screen. You get to this screen by typing "netplwiz" in the search field of the Start Menu.
I changed the Group of this account to Administrators before I realized that it was assigned to two Groups -- "HomeUsers; Administrators" as I mentioned above. I was trying to make sure that it was an Administrator account so I didn't have to type in a password everytime I wanted to install software.
I can use this computer normally without being asked for an administrator password all the time when I want to install new software, but I can't log in to this PC from another PC because I don't have an account that has a Group of "HomeUsers".
I should have left the account alone; everything would've been fine.
But there doesn't seem to be a way to assign it to two groups after the initial assignment that take place automatically when you are setting up your computer for the first time. If you assign "HomeUsers" to the account, the Group field on the User Accounts screen will just read "HomeUsers". If you assign "Administrators" to the account, the Group field on the User Accounts screen will just read "Administrators". There's no way to make it read "HomeUsers; Administrators" again.
If you don't have at least one account that is a "HomeUsers" account, you cannot log in to the PC from another PC on the network. If you don't have an account that is an "Administrators" account, you cannot install software on your machine without being asked for an Administrator password all the time, which is very annoying.
I want an account on my Windows 7 PC that I can use to install software without being asked for a password AND that I can log into from another PC on the network to transfer files.
If I could make the Group field read "HomeUsers; Administrators" of my primary account on the Windows 7 PC when I go to the User Accounts screen by typing "netplwiz" in the search field of the Start Menu, my primary account would do what I want it to do.
Does anybody know how to make an account in Windows 7 a "HomeUsers" account AND an "Administrators" account? As I said before, Windows 7 does this for you automatically when you first set up your computer. But if you change it inadvertently, there is no way to change it back. At least I don't know how to do it. If anybody has any ideas on how to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Charles Carrington
What is the procedure for securing a Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP Server (or even Perl) for production use?
Other than setting the MySql password and the root password for linux what other (maybe not so obvious) steps should be taken?
Also what steps can I take if I was going to be extra paranoid that may not normally be nessasary?
this is for a basic single site use but must be secure.
Thank you. (sorry if this was asked before)
I am behind a proxy which requires users to login during the first connection with a username and password with a HTML form. Thus, it is not handled with usual http://username:[email protected] and any attempt to access the internet from this setting falls into the login form.
How could I automatically login to the proxy? In linux, what manages proxy stuffs when a command tries to access the internet?
Thank you.
I have a server running on windows server 2008. Recently we created a domain and added it to the domain. A domain user account was created with same username and password as my previous local administrator account. Now I unable to login using my local account. I tried loggin in using SERVERNAME\Username, but it is giving incorrect password error message. Is there any way I can retrieve or create a new local administrator account on a domain computer
I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2188la and when it wakes from sleep the monitor flashes (screen flickers), and every time it flashes (2 seconds) it returns me to the beginning of the password field making it almost impossible input the password.
Does anyone knows what causes this problem?
I have a Sony Vaio laptop. After using GParted to move the primary Windows partion, the laptop no longer boots, saying 'Operating system not found'.
I don't have a recovery disc and the only other machine I have access to is a Mac Mini.
I have tried creating a bootable USB using the recovery ISO from Microsoft. I can see all the files on the USB stick from my Mac. I followed the instructions here: http://borgstrom.ca/2010/10/14/os-x-bootable-usb.html
I have set the laptop BIOS boot order to be 'External' first, but the laptop refuses to boot from the USB stick. I have previously been able to boot from a linux installation on the USB stick.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
I have a server that was running two 60GB drives as a logical RAID1. At some point the second drive was physically removed and the logical drive has been in "Interim Recovery Mode" for several months now.
There's no need for the redundancy of RAID1 on this machine, and I have no intention of replacing the missing drive. If possible I would like to convert the current RAID1 to a single-drive RAID0 by simply dropping the failed drive from the current configuration.
I'm only interested in doing this if it can be done in-place. Otherwise I'm perfectly content to leave it in "Interim Recovery Mode" indefinitely.
