• Stop debug stalling in eclipse

  I recently installed eclipse on my Mac pro. I had previously been using eclipse on my mac book. When I run an app engine project on the mac book, it works fine. When I run it on my mac pro it brings me into the debugger where I have to click resume a few times but then everything works well again. I went looking into the debug settings and many other settings pages but everything looks the same. I don't remember making any changes to my mac book settings. The code is an exact copy on both machines. What am I missing here? What settings do I need to change.

• One huge drive (network share) from many computers, with folder priority redundancy.

  Not sure if this exists, but I have a huge amount of data to store (about 5-50mb files) and as it is now, I have 5 computers, each with raid 5 providing about 6TB hard drive each. This is causing some problems with the software I am using (something home made) so I'm wondering, is there some software that I can install on all those computers that will mask it as one huge drive... Running windows on those computers, from Xp 64 bit to windows server 2008 I would also like to set a priority on each folder on the redundancy it has, some folders I can live without no online backup (I have a backup in a safe of that data) but some I need full online backup system if one hard drive fails. Something open source, as I try to use that as much as I can, but all ideas welcome.

• parse this directory path without losing slash

  hi, I have a wxPython application. I am taking in a directory path from a textbox using GetValue(). I notice that while trying to parse in the directory path "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop\InputFile.xls", python sees the string as 'C:\\Documents and Settings\UserName\\Desktop\\InputFile.xls' (missing a slash between "Settings" and "UserName). Why is it that only that slash is not correctly escaped? Once the string has been changed to 'C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Desktop\InputFile.xls', is there a type conversion or function that can does this properly? Thanks.

• mysqldump and wamp

  I am running a wamp server and trying to use mysqldump to backup a mysql database I have. The following is the PHP code I am using to run mysqldump. exec("mysqldump backup -u$user -p$pass > $sql_file"); When I run the script the page just loads inifnately and the backup is not created. A blank file is being created so I know something is happening. Extra info: exec() is not disabled PHP is not running in safe mode Any ideas?? Win XP, WAMP, MYSQL 5.0.51b

• Backing up an rsnapshot directory to a remote device

  I have a local backup server that uses rsnapshot with hard links that contains about 10TBs of information which add about 4 to 5GBs per day. It's works great. I've been requested to set up and maintain a remote backup of the local rsnapshot directory structure. It's a nightly backup. I've tried using rsync with encryption which takes forever and eats system resources. A previous post says not to use rsync with hard links for that reason. I need a suggestion of how I can keep the local and remote copies of the rsnapshot structures in sync? Thanks

  Hi I'm working on a plugin framework using dynamic loaded shared libraries which is based on Eclipse's (and probally other's) extension-point model. All plugins share similar properties (name, id, version etc) and each plugin could in theory satisfy any extension-point. The actual plugin (ie Dll) handling is managed by another library, all I am doing really is managing collections of interfaces for the application. I started by using an enum PluginType to distinguish the different interfaces, but I have quickly realised that using template functions made the code far cleaner and would leave the grunt work up to the compiler, rather than forcing me to use lots of switch {...} statements. The only issue is where I need to specify like functionality for class members - most obvious example is the default plugin which provides a particular interface. A Settings class handles all settings, including the default plugin for an interface. ie Skin newSkin = settings.GetDefault<ISkin>(); How do I store the default ISkin in a container without resorting to some other means of identifying the interface? As I mentioned above, I currently use a std::map<PluginType, IPlugin> Settings::defaults member to achieve this (where IPlugin is an abstract base class which all plugins derive from. • Bacula configuration for clients that are turned on and off randomly

  I'm evaluating Bacula as a centralized backup tool for a small network where users will turn machines on and off unpredictably. Some of the headless Linux boxes I need to back up are intended to be turned off by pressing the on/off-button on the case, without any way of telling the user to wait for a backup job to finish. So, we don't know when backup jobs may run (anacron might help with this, right?) and we don't know whether they'll be allowed to finish. Is Bacula a reasonable choice for such an environment?

• C#: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture not working consistently

  I've been working on a pet project on the weekends to learn more about C# and have encountered an odd problem when working with localization. To be more specific, the problem I have is with System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture. I've set up my app so that the user can quickly change the language of the app by clicking a menu item. The menu item in turn, saves the two-letter code for the language (e.g. "en", "fr", etc.) in a user setting called 'Language' and then restarts the application. Properties.Settings.Default.Language = "en"; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); Application.Restart(); When the application is started up, the first line of code in the Form's constructor (even before InitializeComponent()) fetches the Language string from the settings and sets the CurrentUICulture like so: public Form1() { Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo(Properties.Settings.Default.Language); InitializeComponent(); } The thing is, this doesn't work consistently. Sometimes, all works well and the application loads the correct language based on the string saved in the settings file. Other times, it doesn't, and the language remains the same after the application is restarted. At first I thought that I didn't save the language before restarting the application but that is definitely not the case. When the correct language fails to load, if I were to close the application and run it again, the correct language would come up correctly. So this implies that the Language string has been saved but the CurrentUICulture assignment in my form constructor is having no effect sometimes. Any help? Is there something I'm missing of how threading works in C#? This could be machine-specific, so if it makes any difference I'm using Pentium Dual-Core CPU.

• Shell script only executes partially when run with CRON

  I've written a shell script that does the following: Retrieve mail from a POP3 account (using GetMail) Save a copy of that email to S3 (using AWS CLI) Email me the filesize of the email The script runs fine manually, and technically runs from CRON, but it only seems to be sending the email. The getmail and S3 bits don't seem to run. Everything I've read seems to hammer home the message that I need to be careful about relative paths and the like when using CRON, but I think I'm using absolute paths everywhere I need to be, so I'm stumped as to what the issue could be.   When trying to execute a .NET-App, it throws a "PolicyException", because "only one group is allowed". The tool should list existing settings, and allow to delete selected settings. Using caspol to list is not helpful, it is cruel. I've seen there is a simple gui-frontend, which allows to define NEW settings, but it does not allow to list or delete existing settings. Caspol is a nightmare, no wonder anyone uses it by choice. With .NET 1.1 Microsoft delivered a configuration-utility, but for .NET 2.0 i've found nothing.

  Many IDEs supports to import maven projects directly, but maven has a maven-eclipse-plugin, when you run : mvn eclipse:eclipse It will generate eclipse project settings ,then you can import as generic eclipse project. Which one is better? I prefer the first one, as my IDE is eclipse 3.5 shiped with WTP 3.1 and m2eclipse, I don't know if maven-eclipse-plugin support WTP 3.1 project settings ? If I don't import correct project settings, I don't think eclipse will recognize my project,when I deploy a web application, it ususally can't find webroot folder.

• What would be the best approach for this?

  I have a site which has an area that requires authentication. Right now I use the roles attribute on all the controllers in that area, and I run a query to retrieve that users ID, and all their settings. It seems like a code or design smell to me that I am retrieving the userid and settings each time a controller in that area loads up? I'm not sure if I should be using sessions, or if ASP.Net MVC 2.0 provides some unique way to handle this. Another concern is security. Overall, I don't really know which way to turn. Design wise I would like the userId and settings retrieved only once when the user logs into the area. Right now I grab the userId each time a controller loads up, and then if required, I query the database for their settings each time as well.

• Upgrading Team Foundation Server 2008 to 2010

  I am sure you will have seen my posts on upgrading our internal Team Foundation Server from TFS2008 to TFS2010 Beta 2, RC and RTM, but what about a fresh upgrade of TFS2008 to TFS2010 using the RTM version of TFS. One of our clients is taking the plunge with TFS2010, so I have the job of doing the upgrade. It is sometimes very useful to have a team member that starts work when most of the Sydney workers are heading home as I can do the upgrade without impacting them. The down side is that if you have any blockers then you can be pretty sure that everyone that can deal with your problem is asleep I am starting with an existing blank installation of TFS 2010, but Adam Cogan let slip that he was the one that did the install so I thought it prudent to make sure that it was OK. Verifying Team Foundation Server 2010 We need to check that TFS 2010 has been installed correctly. First, check the Admin console and have a root about for any errors. Figure: Even the SQL Setup looks good. I don’t know how Adam did it! Backing up the Team Foundation Server 2008 Databases As we are moving from one server to another (recommended method) we will be taking a backup of our TFS2008 databases and resorting them to the SQL Server for the new TFS2010 Server. Do not just detach and reattach. This will cause problems with the version of the database. If you are running a test migration you just need to create a backup of the TFS 2008 databases, but if you are doing the live migration then you should stop IIS on the TFS 2008 server before you backup the databases. This will stop any inadvertent check-ins or changes to TFS 2008. Figure: Stop IIS before you take a backup to prevent any TFS 2008 changes being written to the database. It is good to leave a little time between taking the TFS 2008 server offline and commencing the upgrade as there is always one developer who has not finished and starts screaming. This time it was John Liu that needed 10 more minutes to make his changes and check-in, so I always give it 30 minutes and see if anyone screams. There were no more screams so the upgrade can continue. Figure: Backup all of the databases for TFS and include the Reporting Services, just in case.   Figure: Check that all the backups have been taken Once you have your backups, you need to copy them to your new TFS2010 server and restore them. This is a good way to proceed as if we have any problems, or just plain run out of time, then you just turn the TFS 2008 server back on and all you have lost is one upgrade day, and not 10 developer days. As per the rules, you should record the number of files and the total number of areas and iterations before the upgrade so you have something to compare to: TFS2008 File count: Type Count 1 1845 2 15770 Areas & Iterations: 139 You can use this to verify that the upgrade was successful. it should however be noted that the numbers in TFS 2010 will be bigger. This is due to some of the sorting out that TFS does during the upgrade process. Restore Team Foundation Server 2008 Databases Restoring the databases is much more time consuming than just attaching them as you need to do them one at a time. But you may be taking a backup of an operational database and need to restore all your databases to a particular point in time instead of to the latest. I am doing latest unless I encounter any problems. Figure: Restore each of the databases to either a latest or specific point in time.     Figure: Restore all of the required databases Now that all of your databases are restored you now need to upgrade them to Team Foundation Server 2010. Upgrade Team Foundation Server 2008 Databases This is probably the easiest part of the process. You need to call a fire and forget command that will go off to the database specified, find the TFS 2008 databases and upgrade them to 2010. During this process all of the 6 main TFS 2008 databases are merged into the TfsVersionControl database, upgraded and then the database is renamed to TFS_[CollectionName]. The rename is only the database and not the physical files, so it is worth going back and renaming the physical file as well. This keeps everything neat and tidy. If you plan to keep the old TFS 2008 server around, for example if you are doing a test migration first, then you will need to change the TFS GUID. This GUID is unique to each TFS instance and is preserved when you upgrade. This GUID is used by the clients and they can get a little confused if there are two servers with the same one. To kick of the upgrade you need to open a command prompt and change the path to “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010\Tools” and run the “import” command in  “tfsconfig”. TfsConfig import /sqlinstance:<Previous TFS Data Tier>                  /collectionName:<Collection Name>                  /confirmed Imports a TFS 2005 or 2008 data tier as a new project collection. Important: This command should only be executed after adequate backups have been performed. After you import, you will need to configure portal and reporting settings via the administration console. EXAMPLES -------- TfsConfig import /sqlinstance:tfs2008sql /collectionName:imported /confirmed TfsConfig import /sqlinstance:tfs2008sql\Instance /collectionName:imported /confirmed OPTIONS: -------- sqlinstance         The sql instance of the TFS 2005 or 2008 data tier. The TFS databases at that location will be modified directly and will no longer be usable as previous version databases.  Ensure you have back-ups. collectionName      The name of the new Team Project Collection. confirmed           Confirm that you have backed-up databases before importing. This command will automatically look for the TfsIntegration database and verify that all the other required databases exist. In this case it took around 5 minutes to complete the upgrade as the total database size was under 700MB. This was unlike the upgrade of SSW’s production database with over 17GB of data which took a few hours. At the end of the process you should get no errors and no warnings. The Upgrade operation on the ApplicationTier feature has completed. There were 0 errors and 0 warnings. As this is a new server and not a pure upgrade there should not be a problem with the GUID. If you think at any point you will be doing this more than once, for example doing a test migration, or merging many TFS 2008 instances into a single one, then you should go back and rename the physical TfsVersionControl.mdf file to the same as the new collection. This will avoid confusion later down the line. To do this, detach the new collection from the server and rename the physical files. Then reattach and change the physical file locations to match the new name. You can follow http://www.mssqltips.com/tip.asp?tip=1122 for a more detailed explanation of how to do this. Figure: Stop the collection so TFS does not take a wobbly when we detach the database. When you try to start the new collection again you will get a conflict with project names and will require to remove the Test Upgrade collection. This is fine and it just needs detached. Figure: Detaching the test upgrade from the new Team Foundation Server 2010 so we can start the new Collection again. You will now be able to start the new upgraded collection and you are ready for testing. Do you remember the stats we took off the TFS 2008 server? So in this case as I am running on the local box you need to use http://localhost:8080/tfs which will redirect you to http://localhost:8080/tfs/web for the web access. If you need to connect with a Visual Studio 2008 client you will need to use the full path of the new collection, http://[servername]/tfs/[collectionname] and this will work with all of your collections. With Visual Studio 2005 you will only be able to connect to the Default collection and in both VS2008 and VS2005 you will need to install the forward compatibility updates. Upgrade Done! At this point you can send out a notice to everyone that the upgrade is complete and and give them the connection details. You need to remember that at this stage we have 2008 project upgraded to run under TFS 2010 but it is still running under that same process template that it was running before. You can only “enable” 2010 features in a process template you can’t upgrade. So what to do? Well, you need to create a new project and migrate things you want to keep across. Souse code is easy, you can move or Branch, but Work Items are more difficult as you can’t move them between projects. This instance is complicated more as the old project uses the Conchango/EMC Scrum for Team System template and I will need to write a script/application to get the work items across with their attachments in tact.
