• The Return of Oracle Wikis: Bigger and Better

  The Oracle Wikis are back - this time, with Oracle SSO on top and powered by Atlassian's Confluence technology. These wikis offer quite a bit more functionality than the old platform. For example, wikis are now associated with groups/spaces, as opposed to an open free-for-all, and space owners have curative responsibility (for approving new members, moderating comments, and so on). All in all we're confident that you will be pleased with the experience. Of course, we'll be on the hunt for bugs/issues for a while, and if you find any yourself we encourage you to report them here.

• how to convince other we should move to hadoop?

  Everything I've read about Hadoop seems like exactly the technology we need to make our enterprise more scalable. We have terabytes of raw data that is in non-relational form (text files of some kind). We're quickly approaching the upper limits of what our centralized file server can handle and everyone is aware of this. Most people on the tech team, especially the more junior members of the tech team are all in favor of moving from the central file system to HDFS. The problem is, there is one key (most senior, etc.) member of the team who is resisting this change and every time Hadoop comes up, he tells us that we could simply add another file server and be in the clear. So, my question (and yes, it's really subjective, but I need more help with this than any of my other questions) is what steps can we take to get upper management to move forward with Hadoop despite the hesitation of one member of the team?

• Fastest way to set up a JSON server on my local machine [closed]

  I am a front-end developer. For many experiements I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest to set up and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. Is there any framework (on any language) that do stuff like this for me?

  I am trying to make my first app for sale, I would like to ask some questions for those who have already sold their software: Have you used a Framework/Lib whose LGPL License? if yes, what are the impressions of your customers? for example, if your customers/ competitors from the market reveal technology/secrets that you used in your solution (as LGPL requires that you make a Dynamic Link (.DLL) for your libs and you clearly tell the use of a Lib/Framework ...). Full story: For my project, I used a framework LGPL/commercial (Dual License) the second one it was too expensive (about 3000 USD) which pushed me to use LGPL.. however I still concerned.. • Open source login solution

  Authentication is such a general problem, which most websites have to implement. There are a few commercial solutions, but all lack sufficient functionality to customize the registration process. Therefore, I am looking for an open-source alternative. I am using PHP and with PostgreSQL as database, but as far as I understand one could utilize authentication solutions using other technologies and integrate them into our site in various ways. Therefore, I am looking for such solutions in any technology apart from those requiring Microsoft infrastructure... I would prefer Open Source solution, which have already implemented the following features: Has password recovery procedure Username is the email address of the user Has "Remember me" functionailty (meaning that the user is logged in automatically without seeing the login page) email address verification Google has gotten me nowhere on this and neither a search on this site...

  Is there a suitable software or a good tutorial for creating 2D rooms/scenery for adventure games from real photos? Is it possible to achieve good results by using photos, or the hand-drawn style will always be the best choice? Thank you! --- EDIT --- I want to clarify that I'm particularly interested in the art creation process, not on the environment in which to build games. I'm writing the game in Java for Android, but I don't think it matters. Also, I'm not trying to decide if the game will have photo realistic rooms or not - I want to achieve 2d pixelated, old-school style background scenes and I wonder if this can be made from photos, because I cannot draw them myself. For example, can I shoot a scene with my camera and then make it look something like the image in the following link: PIXEL ART FOREST I know that I cannot get the same quality as an absolutely hand-drawn pixel, but I'm looking for some decent technology/tutorial/software to make them somewhat similar.

  We are 3 persons trying to build a large website which will be available in 3 languges. However, we will start with one language and with small idea then we are going to improve it and make it larger! What do you think the best tools and language that we should use? We are caring alot about the speed of loading the pages and tools that provide excellent qulaity with cheaper fees. Edit: We are graphic designers, so we did not choose the programming language yet. But we studied computer science and we have an idea but we found that this is the best place to ask the question and expect the right answer from you. Should we use ASP.NET for example? or PHP? We do not want an expesive option that will cost us alot in the future and we do not want to change the technology at least for the first 5 years. Thanks!

• We Heart Discussion Forums (and Know You Do Too)

  It's not generally known, but Oracle (via Oracle Technology Network) hosts one of the largest discussion forums instances (forums.oracle.com) on the planet (founded in 2001), containing nearly 10 million messages from 1 million registered users. That's a whole lot of conversations! And we really, really value those conversations - they span almost every conceivable technical subject across hundreds of products and technologies. More often not - and this is by design - those discussions are stewarded by community volunteers, many of whom are Oracle ACEs (who in fact earned their ACE stripes that way). And so, I am very happy to tell you that we have just initiated a project with our platform partner, Jive Software, to upgrade that platform to the most current, modern version available. The end result should be a vastly improved user experience for everyone involved, in all dimensions.   Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! • Should I learn GWT (I'm a Java newb) if I eventually want to learn JavaScript and related libraries?

  I haven't been working with Java for a long time, and I found GWT to be interesting plus a chance to learn and practice Java. My goal for this year is to learn JavaScript. I'm very interested in HTML5, browser extensions and other cool stuff that JavaScript can do. I think I'm more interested in this than Java at the moment (that's not to say I dislike or would discontinue working with Java) but I would like advice as to whether it's a good idea to proceed with learning GWT (given my interest in JavaScript) or to spend my time learning other Java technology.
