  I am communicating with a server, each message sent to the server has to be padded with the length of the message, unsigned int len = htonl(msg.size()); In C running the length through htonl and padding the message works, in Java AFAIK byte order is already in network order so I assumed all I have to do is write the string length before the message to the stream, but this does not work am I missing something? stream.write(msg.length()); stream.write(msg.getBytes()); Stream is an OutputStream.

  I’ve been doing a lot of work with the “Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Language Service” recently, see my post here and article here for more details on its use and some uses. Anyway, it is a start and is more reliable that other methods.

• Create creative diagrams or find someone creative

  This question might be slightly non-techy/dev, but I am sure many of you had a similar problem. We code, write test-cases, put comments in source-code (!), put messages in svn commit, write comments in tracked issues. We create ERD/class/usecase/.. diagrams with whatever tool. We might write user-manuals, wikis, guidelines,.. Not everyones cup of tea, but usually practice makes a good tech writer (I experienced that). Now comes the point: Once in a while we need to supply system overview diagrams, drawings of architecure,.. that look appealing to non-technical people, and no, we dont have a marketing department with designers waiting for our input or a $$$$ design company doing our corporate design. If I try to do that, it a) takes forever b) I might not have the tools and c) looks like crap and not like something I want to see in a slideshow. Whats your experience or recipe ? Is there something like RENT-A-DESIGNER ? cheers

  First, most of my recent work was Java. So even though I "know" C++, I do not want to write Java in C++. And C++ templates are one thing I will really miss when going back to Java. Now that this out of the way, if I want to do create a new stream formatter, say pic, that will have a single std::string parameter in it's constructor. I would like the user to be able to write something like: cout << pic("Date is 20../../..") << "100317" << endl; The output should be Date is 2010/03/17 How do I write the pic class? when the compiler sees the cout what are the underlying steps the compiler does?

  Hi, I am getting java.io.EOFException while reading a binary block from lucene index. I am storing java object as byte-array in lucene index field and reading it when hit occurs. Here is stack trace : Caused by: java.io.EOFException at java.io.ObjectInputStream$PeekInputStream.readFully(ObjectInputStream.java:2281) at java.io.ObjectInputStream$BlockDataInputStream.readShort(ObjectInputStream.java:2750) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.readStreamHeader(ObjectInputStream.java:780) at java.io.ObjectInputStream.(ObjectInputStream.java:280) at org.terracotta.modules.searchable.util.SerializationUtil$OIS.(SerializationUtil.java:20) I have some background threads which write into index. But i buffer them and then write them at once like 1000. Occasionally I also issue optimize() on index. When I write, I am re-opening IndexReader.   Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

  On any french keyboard(AZERTY) the dot char '.' is generated with (Shift + ;) combination while the percent char '%' is generated with (Shift + ù) combination So when I type one of the above combinations in a GWT text area to write '.' or ' %', the key codes generated for these events are KEY_DELETE in the former case and KEY_LEFT in the latter.   I am testing a java web service(jax-ws),but whenever i am running the test i am getting response code as response message:Read timed out . • Automated build platform for .NET portfolio - best choice?

  I am involved with maintaining a fairly large portfolio of .NET applications. Also in the portfolio are legacy applications built on top of other platforms - native C++, ECLIPS Forms, etc. I have a complex build framework on top of NAnt right now that manages the builds for all of these applications. The build framework uses NAnt to do a number of different things: Pull code out of Subversion, as well as create tags in Subversion Build the code, using MSBuild for .NET or other compilers for other platforms Peek inside AssemblyInfo files to increment version numbers Do deletes of certain files that shouldn't be included in builds / releases Releases code to deployment folders Zips code up for backup purposes Deploy Windows services; start and stop them Etc. Most of those things can be done with just NAnt by itself, but we did build a couple of extension tasks for NAnt to do some things that were specific to our environment. Also, most of those processes above are genericized and reused across a lot of our different application build scripts, so that we don't repeat logic. So it is not simple NAnt code, and not simple build scripts. There are dozens of NAnt files that come together to execute a build. Lately I've been dissatisfied with NAnt for a couple reasons: (1) it's syntax is just awful - programming languages on top of XML are really horrific to maintain, (2) the project seems to have died on the vine; there haven't been a ton of updates lately and it seems like no one is really at the helm. Trying to get it working with .NET 4 has cause some pain points due to this lack of activity. So, with all of that background out of the way, here's my question. Given some of the things that I want to accomplish based on that list above, and given that I am primarily in a .NET shop, but I also need to build non-.NET projects, is there an alternative to NAnt that I should consider switching to? Things on my radar include Powershell (with or without psake), MSBuild by itself, and rake. These all have pros and cons. For example, is MSBuild powerful enough? I remember using it years ago and it didn't seem to have as much power as NAnt. Do I really want to have my team learn Ruby just to do builds using rake? Is psake really mature enough of a project to pin my portfolio to? Is Powershell "too close to the metal" and I'll end up having to write my own build library akin to psake to use it on its own? Are there other tools that I should consider? If you were involved with maintaining a .NET portfolio of significant complexity, what build tool would you be looking at? What does your team currently use?

Ex: I have a model called Event and its same as doing Event.find(id) (I dont want to use find inside my controller and I want my controller to use a named scoped (for future flexibility)) So I have written a named scoped named_scope :from_id, lambda { |id| {:conditions = ['id= ?', id] } } and I'm calling it from my controller like Event.from_id(id) But my problems is it returns Event object array not only one object Ex: if I want to get event name I have to write event = Event.from_id(id) event[0].name instead I want to write event = Event.from_id(id) event.name Am I doing something wrong here.. thanks in advance cheers sameera

• read url in binary mode in java

  In java I need to read a binary file from a site and write it to a disk file. This example http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/urls/readingURL.html could read webpages succesfully, but when I try to read a binary file from my localhost server and write it to a disk file the contents change, corrupting the binary file. Using fc I see that 0x90 is changed to 0x3F and other changes. How do I acess the binary files (read url and write to file) without java or anything else changing ANY characters, like doing any newline conversions or character conversions or anything else, simply reading input url and writing it out as a file.

• Microsft Jet oledb connection to excel loses formulae

  I have a dataset and I write it's values to an excel file using Microsoft Jet 4.0 Oledb provider. I want to put hyperlinks into the excel, for this I write "=HYPERLINK("http://www.abc.org/x.pdf")" in DS and then write it to excel. But when the excel is opened it prefixes a ' (quote/apostrophe) before the formula and there it comes as a text, not link. Can you help me removing that quote so that my excel file has hyperlinks instead of that as text? I need to use Microsoft Jet 4.0 provider (not excel component) as the client machine may or may not have MS-Excel installed on his machine.

• How do i handle jcupload and no flash?

  I am using http://www.jcupload.com/ (basic) to upload files. I am considering having a friend write a more custom version or to do magic with ajax; so the solution should be able to work without that. With jcupload i include css, a script and write <div id="jcupload_content"></div> in my html and i am done. Problem is, with no flash i get an object box. Instead i would like is an iframe or a html form to upload the file. How do i do this? Should i detect flash from javascript and overload the div myself if no flash is available? How do i detect if flash is available? with jquery i know i can write something like $('#jcupload_content').innerHtml = blah; How do i handle the flash part?

• Android process killer

  I have similar question, maybe you can help. Is it possible to get list of all process which are running in the Android system, and kill some of them? I know that there are some applications (task managers), but I would like to write my own, simple application. I would like to write simple task manager, just list of all process and button which will kill some of them. Could you just write some Java methods which I can call in order to get list of process, and method for killing them. Or just give me some advices. Thanks for answers. Regards Martin
