AJAX server calls on a JSF-centric app

I'm building a JSF 2 application. I wanted to integrate it with jQuery, e.g.: $.getJSON(contextPath + '/something', function(data) { // ... }); I need contextPath/something to return data in JSON. How can I do it? I know I can assign another servlet to this URL, but this approach does not seem to scale well. One could use a more scalable approach with a front end controller (e.g. Spring Web MVC), but I really wanted to write this in Java Enterprise stack. What other options are there?

Best way to perform authentication on every request

Hello. In my asp.net mvc 2 app, I'm wondering about the best way to implement this: For every incoming request I need to perform custom authorization before allowing the file to be served. (This is based on headers and contents of the querystring. If you're familiar with how Amazon S3 does rest authentication - exactly that). I'd like to do this in the most perfomant way possible, which probably means as light a touch as possible, with IIS doing as much of the actual work as possible. The service will need to handle GET requests, as well as writing new files coming in via POST/PUT requests. The requests are for an abitrary file, so it could be: GET http://storage.foo.com/bla/egg/foo18/something.bin POST http://storage.foo.com/else.txt Right now I've half implemented it using an IHttpHandler which handles all routes (with routes.RouteExistingFiles = true), but not sure if that's the best, or if I should be hooking into the lifecycle somewhere else? JSONP Implications with true REST

From my understanding JSONP can only be achieved using the GET verb. Assuming this is true which I think it is, then this rules out core compliance with true REST in which you should make use of different verbs i.e. GET,PUT,POST,DELETE etc... for different and specific purposes. My question is what type of barriers am I likely to come up against if I where to say allow updating and deleting of resources using a JSONP service using a get request. Is it better practice to offer a JSON service and state that the user will need a server side proxy to consume using JavaScript XDomain? Cheers , Andrew

Convert PHP date into javascript date format

I have a PHP script that outputs an array of data. This is then transformed into JSON using the json_encode() function. My issue is I have a date within my array and its is not in the correct javascript format. How can I convert this within PHP so it is? $newticket['ThreadID'] = $addticket; $newticket['Subject'] = $subject; //$newticket['DateCreated'] = date('d-m-Y G:H'); Instead of the above fo rthe date I need the equivilant of the javascript function new Date() When I output the above I get the following "Fri Jun 01 2012 11:08:48 GMT+0100 (GMT Daylight Time)" However, If I format my PHP date to be the same, javascript rejects it. Confused... Can anyone help?

double authentication issue on IIS / Report Server (SQL server 2008)

Hi, On a 2003 server box, with SQL server 2008 installed (ReportServer deployed in IIS mode), I've got a virtual directory within IIS with it's security set to 'windows authentication', with the following html code: <body> <h1>test</h1> <iframe src="/reportserver" witdh="50%" height="50%" /> </body> From the outside, I've got a first login/pwd box displayed to access the html code, then a second one to display the content of the iframe. On the same type of server, but with SQL Server 2005, I don't have this issue (i.e. only one login box). My thought is that the first token should give acces to both the page and the iframe, isn't it? Any hints on how to setup the reportserver to fix this? thanks.

Python how to handle # in a dictionary

I've got some json from last.fm's api which I've serialised into a dictionary using simplejson. A quick example of the basic structure is below. { "artist": "similar": { "artist": { "name": "Blah", "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "small"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "medium"} "image": {"#text":"URLHERE","size": "large"} } } } Any ideas how I can access the image urls of various different sizes. My attempts at accessing the #text variable don't seem to work because python doesn't appear to like #'s in the names. And any ideas how I can easily get the url for the depending on the size? I'm getting this error when I call a web service: "The remote server returned an error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required". I get the general idea and I can get the code to work by adding myProxy.Credentials= NetworkCredential("user", "password", "domain"); or by using DefaultCredentials in code. My problem is that the call to the web service works in production without this. It seems like there is a non code solution involving Machine.config, but what is it? At the moment I can't get to the production boxes machine.config file to see what that looks like. I tried updating my machine.config as follows, but I still get the 407 error.

And I figured, that there must be some patterns for this, as it is a pretty important area? The application that we're developing, is layered traditionally, having data layer (Entity Framework 4) repositories domain layer service layer (can be WCF, with data transfer objects) multiple clients consuming the WCF service (ASP.NET [MVC], Silverlight, WPF) and clients accessing a service layer directly (no WCF) Are there books/articles/blogs that dig deeply into this area? Primarily about authorization such as handling multiple roles and attributes attached to users). It doesn’t have to be specific for the .NET Framework, but it would be preferred.

android, find the nearest location without going through all the locations

I am building a taxi dispatching app first: I need the passenger app to show the nearest taxis, now I know how to do that in code but in my way I have to go through all the taxis locations(in database on server) and calculate the distance from the passenger location and get the lowest ones - I don't want to do this because there will be a lot of taxis and going through all of them and making some math is kind of pain on the server- is there a way to get the nearest ones without going through all of them? second: what the best database to use - first, should it be sql or non-sql - I need a very robust database, because there will be a lot of updates (I mean the passengers locations added then deleted when arriving to destination && the taxis location changes frequently) finally: I will use RubyOnRails to do the server side and json as data transfer format, do you have a recommendation to me on something better? Android programming: Authentication and data exchange with Java EE

I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

Server-side access to Client Browser's Latitude/Longitude using Django.

Hello, So i am writing a little app that compares a user's position against a database on web-based server written using Django and performs some functions with it. Accessing the browser's geolocation data (in supported browsers ) is fairly trivial using JavaScript. But what is the best way to allow the Django server to access the longitude and latitude variables? Is it best to wrap them up as a JSON object and send to the server via POST? Or is there some easier (Geo)Django-based way to access the Navigator.geolocation browser object. Please forgive a newbie a question like this, but my Google-Fuing only seems to find ways to insert variables into JavaScript via template tag, whereas I need it to work the other way! Any advice or code snippets greatly appreciated. Feel free to talk to me like I am an idiot.
