• Tomcat servlet-api.jar problem

  I am running a web application using Tomcat and Java Servlets, JSP's, etc. I am aware that in order to use Servlets, it is dependent on the Servlet-api.jar file. Initially I placed this jar file in the WEB-INF/lib/ directory. This has worked fine for me for months during the developmental phase. When we put the application onto the server space we are using, we started seeing wierd problems showing up in the Catalina.out file telling us that there was dependency problems with the servlet-api.jar file. I am aware that tomcat has this jar file in its container, and that I should remove it from the WEB-INF/lib/ directory. I have tried this and it does not work. What do I have to do when I remove this jar file from the local files and allow it to depend on tomcats servlet-api.jar file.

  I want to write a Firefox add-on for advanced history tracking and bookmarking which will send URLs the browser meets during usage (and all the metadata available about the context) to a web service which will keep track of them storing in an SQL database for further access and analysis. I'd like to divide URLs tracked into 5 groups: those I explicitly click to bookmark, those I download by Firefox standard built-in download manager, all other URLs accessed, all URLs met on all viewed pages as hrefs, all other URLs mentioned in HTML sources of all viewed pages. Any ideas of how to get those in an extension?

• Package not found; javac

  This is annoying. I have a directory structure like this -lib --some jar files -packageName --Main.java --SomeOtherPackage --SomeOtherJavaClass.java Main.java imports SomeOtherPackage. And both java files uses jars in the lib. What I do is add the jar files independently in the CLASSPATH. And then run as: javac packageName/Main.java but it gives the error that Package not found SomeOtherPackage . Shouldn't it automatically realize the dependency and build SomeOtherPackage as well? What would be the javac command and the classpath for the above case? Thanks

• Asterisk: Originate API - Which card to use to detect busy/ringing/answer event for FXO

  I want to use Originate API of Asterisk to place an outbound call on a FXO channel, for testing purpose I am using X100P card and, as expected, card is not able to detect if the number is busy/ringing or when it is answered. I want to know which card should I use so that I can get such basic events ... I am not really interested in detailed call progress analysis for answering machine or live voice. I just need basic busy/ringing and answer events and maybe a dis-connect event. Thanks.

  I am developing an application on Android. It is a long running application that continuously processes sensor data. While running the application I see a lot of GC messages in the logcat; about one every second. This is most probably because of objects being created and immediately de-referenced in a loop. How do I find which objects are being created and released immediately? All the java heap analysis tools that I have tried(*) are bothered with the counts and sizes of objects on the heap. While they are useful, I am more interested in finding out the site where temporary short-lived objects get created the most. (*) I tried jcat and Eclipse MAT. I couldn't get hat to work on the Android heap-dumps; it complained of an unsupported dump file version.

• How should I capture clickstream data?

  I'd like to start using clickstream analysis to improve a dynamic site's user experience. I'd like to rule out two options: parameterizing URLs (index.php?src=http://www.example.com) and immediate database logging. The former makes pretty ugly URLs and isn't great for SEO and the latter might slow down page render when there are lots of concurrent users. Assuming these aren't viable options, I think I'm left with doing an asynchronous POST to a server side script that runs a database query and returns a 204 (no data) response. Is this the best option for capturing clickstream data?

This script works fine when I run it from command line but if it is invoked from cron it always fails to link the object files. My application has dependency on openssl. • Why are most really fast servers written in C instead of C++?

  I'm trying to decide which to learn and I've read all the "Which is better" questions/arguments, so I thought I'd get your take on something more specific. Is there a platform dependency issue that C++ developers run into with such applications? Or, is it because there are more C developers out there than C++? I also noticed that many more third party C modules exist for Python even thought C++ modules are supported.   If i takes larger datatype where i know i should have taken datatype that was sufficient for possible values that i will insert into a table will affect any performance in sql server in terms of speed or any other way. eg. IsActive (0,1,2,3) not more than 3 in any case. I know i must take tinyint but due to some reasons consider it as compulsion, i am taking every numeric field as bigint and every character field as nVarchar(Max) Please give statistics if possible, to let me try to overcoming that compulsion. I need some solid analysis that can really make someone rethink before taking any datatype.

• Should I combine unrelated interfaces into a single library?

  Situation is like this: There are independent 5 services. Each service consists of a project for interface, implementation and test. Example: LocalizationService.Interfaces LocalizationService.Implementation LocalizationService.Test There is a WCF service for each of the services: LocalizationService.WcfContract (including DataContracts) LocalizationService.WcfHost The client applications are probably mostly going to use all of the services. Should I combine all service interfaces into a common one? AllServices.AllInterfaces In my opinion, this is a bad idea. The services are independent and there is no reason to introduce a dependency. I imagine that especially testing becomes more difficult. However, one may argue that having to include 5 libraries is too much of a hassle. (I'm not sure how to tag this. Feel free to retag.)

  Hi, I used csv2xls.pl to convert a text log into .xls file, and then apply create chart function as following: my $chart3 = $workbook-add_chart( type = 'line' , embedded = 1); Configure the series. $chart3-add_series( categories = '=Sheet1!$B$2:$B$64', values = '=Sheet1!$C$2:$C$64', name = 'Test data series 1', ); Add some labels. $chart3-set_title( name = 'Bridge Rate Analysis' ); $chart3-set_x_axis( name = 'Packet Size ' ); $chart3-set_y_axis( name = 'BVI Rate' ); Insert the chart into the main worksheet. $worksheet-insert_chart( 'G2', $chart3 ); ========== I can see the chart in .xls file, however, all the data is in text format, not number, therefore, the chart looks wrong. I am wondering can you tell me how to convert text into number before apply this create chart function? One other thing is any idea how to apply sorting on the .xls file before create chart? Thanks. • How to compile using gcc but without using _alloca ?

  For some reason, I should use gcc to compile a C file, then link against Visual C++ 2008 project. (I used the current latest gcc version: cygwin gcc 4.3.4 20090804.) But there is one problem: gcc always allocate a big array with _alloca, and VC linker can't resolve the symbol __alloca. for example, int func() { int big[10240]; .... } this code makes the _alloca dependency although I didn't call the _alloca function explicitly. (array size matters. if i change 10240 - 128, everything ok) I tried gcc option -fno-builtin-alloca or -fno-builtin, but no luck. Is it possible to make gcc not to use _alloca ? (or adjust the threshold?)

  Hi there, My current requirement is: I have to package my grails app and use teamcity for continuous build. The only problem is the build agents don't have groovy and grails installed (don't ask why) I want to package my app with Groovy and Grails directories and check in Git. So that there is no dependency. And the package has everything to run the app. Can anybody please help. Please let me know if you want me to rephrase my question.

• NOT LIKE not working on comparison to a column

  Data is fairly large and takes few minutes to run it every time, so its taking a lot of time debugging this problem. When I run like concat('%',T.item,'%') on smaller data it seems to identify items properly. However, when I run it on the main DB (the code shown), it still shows many(maybe even all) of the exceptions.   I have a couple of methods declared at the namespace level within a header for a class: // MyClass.h namespace network { int Method1(double d); int Method2(double d); class MyClass { //... } } then defined in //MyClass.cpp int Method1(double d) { ... } int Method2(double d) { ... } This project compiles cleanly and is a dependency for a ui project which uses MyClass. The functions were previously member functions of MyClass, but were moved to namespace since it was more appropriate.   First off, the title is very generic because there are just tons of ways of how to possibly solve this. However, I'm looking for a clean and neat way. Situation: I have two equal object files foo.o and foo-pi.o, the latter of which is position-independent (compiled with -fPIC). Both depend on foo.h and bar.h. Problem: How do I, without code duplication, declare dependency of all foo*.o to bar.h? Solutions so far: $(shell bash -c 'echo -ne foo{-pi,}.o'}: bar.h $(addsuffix .o, $(addprefix fo, o-pi o)): bar.h The first solution is not portable on systems that don't support bash, the second is a dirty solution since I could not figure out how to use empty strings in addprefix.

• Dowloading a bunch of files asynchronous wait till last finished

  I'm trying to download a lot of files after downloading a sql statement must insert a record. I'm using System.Net.Client to download each file synchronously, still it could be done asynchronous. There's no relation or dependency between each download. At first I just tried to use WebClient.DownloadFileAsync but that shutted the program down and killed all the download processes/threads. Second I tried to create a wait routine something like this; while (processedFiles < totalFiles) Thread.Sleep(1000) This freezed everything. So could someone tell me which aproach to take to implement this Async?

• Eclipse RCP: How to troubleshoot plugin dependencies & classpath problems?

  I am working on an RCP project based on eclipse. It has been working fine but recently I thought I'd upgrade it to use a new eclipse version (3.2 - 3.5). After a bit of trouble, it seemed to be working fine. Then I did something. Don't know what. The end result is that I'm getting a classpath error when one of my plugins (A) tries to access a class in one of the dependent plugins (B) (also one of mine). As far as I can see, Plugin A has Plugin B in its' dependency list and the compiler shows no errors. To test, I created a new Plugin C with one class and accessed the class from Plugin A. That works fine. Does anyone have any hints for troubleshooting such issues? A checklist of settings to check? I've been stuggling with this for hours and getting nowhere! Particularly frustrating as it was working until I changed something! Thanks

• VS2008 project with Entity Framework model results in "always dirty" compile

  In VS 2008, I have a simple .csproj that contains an Entity Framework .edmx (V1) file. Every time I build the project, the output DLL is updated, even though nothing has changed. I have reproduced this in the simplest-possible project (containing one ordinary .cs file and one edmx model). If I remove the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly will not be touched. If I add the edmx model and build repeatedly, the output assembly is modified each time. This is a problem because the real project is a dependency of dozens of other projects and it is wreaking havoc with what times when working in higher layers of the application. Is this a known problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks!

For example, how are these two statements different? Contract.Requires(!mycollection.Any(a => a.ID == newID)); Contract.Requires(!Contract.Exists(mycollection, a => a.ID == newID)); In other words, what does Contract.Exists do in practical purposes, either for a developer using my function, or for the static code analysis system?
