  • What is the response on a REST call where a field is not valid?

    There are many questions on StackOverflow about this, but no definitive answer. I have a REST resource where an entity's field, ProductId, is sent. If the ProductId passed is invalid, what kind of response would you do? I want to send the right response code plus information to the requester on what they can do to fix it. Initial thoughts were 422 with the body containing the list of errors in JSON/XML format. Maybe like this (JSON): [ { FieldName : "ProductId", ErrorCode : "M123", Description : "Product Not Found" }, { FieldName : "Quantity", ErrorCode : "Q001", Description : "Quantity cannot be more than 100" } ] Thoughts?

  • Best Method For High Data Availability for SQL Server

    I have a web service that runs 24/7. Periodically it needs to refresh its database with data from another web service. There is a lot of data. It's tens of thousands of rows. (no, I don't mean this is a lot of data for SQL Server, just trying to point out that I expect it to take some time to come down the pipe from the other web service) The data refresh can take between 5 and 10 minutes. The actual data update portion of that is between 1 and 2 minutes. This means the service would be down for all intents and purposes when consumers would be requesting this type of data. I would like to implement a system where data is always available. The only thing that comes to mind is some type of system where I maintain two separate databases. I populate the inactive one, swapping it to active before populating the other one. I'm not sure I know the best way to do this. My current ideas just revolve around two sets of the schema in a single database (using views to access the active set) or two databases each with the same schema. The application would rotate between the two databases. Any suggestions from someone who has done something like this before?

  • Validating call to web service against schema before sending request

    I am calling a web service (written in Java) in my web app. I use the WSDL to generate proxy classes using the wsdl.exe command line tool. Everything is working fine. However, I have found out that the web service is not doing any data validation at all when they receive a request from my app. Hence, if I happen to send one minute piece of data that isn't exactly what they want, I receive a general fault error in return, with no specifics at all of what the incorrect (if any) piece of data is. So, before I make the request, I'd like to validate my request against the schema they have provided. Is this possible, and if so, how do I go about this? Thanks in advance

    I am Using SOAP WS for getting the Data. I got the four Parameters in Response - Topic_Name, Topic_Id, Topic_ImagePath and Topic_Details. Now I have All the Images of Topic Locally with the same name as i got from the web service for Particular Topic_ID. My question is I want to use Local image instead using the Topic_ImagePath 's Image but the data Must Come From the Web Service. I dont want to use if ..else condition because I have more than 1000 Topics, any one can explain how I get the Path of Local Image and Display it with the Data Comes From the Web Service..     Hi all I am using sql server 2005 reporting service to generate report base on a database. There are two columns which are datetime type ColumnA and ColumnB. The report would display a KPI image on this report by comparing these two columns.Below is the expression for selecting image SWITCH(DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)<0,"kpi_r", DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)>0,"kpi_g", DateDiff("d",Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value)=0,"kpi_y") For most of the records, the image is correct. Only for one record, the result is very strange. For this record ColumnA=2010-04-23 08:00:00 ColumnB=2010-04-22 17:00:00 It would display kpi_r, it displayed kpi_y. I have checked the value of DateDiff(d,Fields!ColumnA.Value,Fields!ColumnB.Value) in the SSMS, the value is -1. Why does it display kpi_y? Does anyone meet this problem before? Best Regards,

    Hi all, for a data warehouse project I need to know about some best practices regarding custom report viewer filters/parameters. Usually I use the standard parameter feature for reports, like multiple select boxes, check boxes, text boxes etc.. But for the current project some reports require more complex report parameters. E.g. a user wants to analyze some measures. For that the user needs to set a filter on a specific address. There are over 100.000 address to choose from, so he has to have the ability to search for an address (full text). Since such features cannot be done with the standard parameters, I will have to create custom params within a ASPX page which are then passed to the report viewer control. So my question is: Are there any best practices on how to create custom parameters? Did anyone had similar problems, if so, how did you solve it?

    Above is how my report looks, the part in yellow in hidden, and is only shown when the user clicks the + icon on the [name]. the result is basically the percentage difference from the Past [X] - [TERM] i.e there is a dropdown with, [weeks, months, days, hours] and a textbox of qty. so choosing qty = 4 and term = weeks will delivery a result set spread over 4 weeks based on the parent result sets date range and name ID I wish to populate here the number of rows, dependant on the value set by the user and the data will be from a dataset. Is it possible to dynamically add more sub rows ( like on row data bound ) if my first row is ID 123 [name], is it possible to send this value [123] to a dataset in order that all subrows are only relevant to the name with ID of 123? this is my first bash at SSRS so please no half cut answers, that just lead to more questions about the answer given :-) if this makes sense.     I'm trying to set up s3 for the first time and trying to run the sample file that comes with the PHP sdk that creates a bucket and attempts to upload some demo files to it. But this is the error I am getting: The difference between the request time and the current time is too large. I read on another question on SO that this is because Amazon determines a valid request by comparing the times between the server and the client, that the 2 must be within a 15 min span of one another. Now here is the problem. My laptop's time is 12:30AM June 8, 2012 at the moment. On my server I created a file called servertime.php and placed this code in that file: <?php print strftime('%c'); ?> and the output is: Fri Jun 8 00:31:22 2012 It looks like the day is correct but I don't know what to make of 00:31:22. In any case, how is it possible to always make sure the time between the client and server is within a 15 minute window of one another. What if I have a user in China who wishes to upload a file on my site which uses s3 for the cdn. Then the time difference would be over a day. How can I make sure all my user's times are within 15 minutes of my server time? What if the user is in the U.S. but the time on their machine is misconfigured. Basically how to get s3 bucket creation and upload to work?

  • Is XML-RPC bad used as a protocol for a public API implementation?

    I need to implement a web API for a project I'm working on in this period. I read there are many standard protocols to do it: XML-RPC, SOAP, REST. Apparently, the XML-RPC one is the easiest one to implement and use from what I saw, but I didn't find anything about using it to implement an API. Instead I found many tutorial about creating a REST API in PHP, for example. Is there any counter-indication for using XML-RPC to implement a public web API? Also, more generally speaking, I could (sort of) define a custom protocol for my API, to keep things simpler (i.e. accepting only GET request containing the parameters I need): would this be so bad? Is using a standard protocol a must-do?

  • Getting data from sharepoint into drupal

    The problem: I am about to develop a Drupal site for a company that stores a lot of data in a sharepoint environment (products, recipes etc...). I need to get that information into my Drupal system somehow. Preferably saving it as drupal nodes. That information will also be edited/added in the sharepoint system, so on top of just saving the data to drupal it will also have to check for updates on a regular basis. One idea for a solution is using some sort of web-service to retrieve data, but i have no idea of how that would be done in drupal. So my question(s) is: Has anyone done anything like this, if so how, or does anyone have any suggestions to how one would go about doing this? Any answers would be highly appreciated. /Anders

    Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to make a generic webservice method in java like this: @WebMethod public <T extends Foo> void testGeneric(T data){ However when I try to consume this with a Java client I get an error stating: [ERROR] Schema descriptor {http://####/}testGeneric in message part "parameters" is not defined and could not be bound to Java. I know it is possible to make a method that takes a parameter such as List and this generates correctly using JAX-WS. I don't mind if there is a solution that means I am tied to using only a particular technology. Thanks, Dan.

    Is there some way to pass an object to a windows service? I know the method myServiceController.Star(string[] arg) but i need to pass a more complex object than a string array. Actually, i don't need the object to be passed as a parameter, what i really needs is that the service can use an object created in a windows forms application. I've tried using System.Web.Script.Serialization.JavaScriptSerializer.Serialize method to convert the object into a Json but i couldn't because the object contains a circular reference. I also tried using pointers, but i couldn't becouse it is a managed type object. Any idea what can i do?

  • OSGI, Servlets and JPA hello world / tutorial / example

    I want to build a web application which basically is a restful web-service serving json messages. I would like it to be as simple as possible. I was thinking about using servlets (with annotations). JPA as a database layer is a must - Toplink or Hibernate. Preferably working on Tomcat. I want to have app divided into modules serving different functionality (auth service, customer service, etc..). And I would like to be able to update those modules without reinstalling whole application on the server - like eclipse plugins, user is notified (when he enters webapp's home url) that update is available, clicks it, and app is downloading and installing updated module. I think this functionality can be made with OSGI, but I can't find any example code, or tutorial with simple hello world updatable servlet providing some data from database through jpa. I'm looking for an advice: - Is OSGI the right tool for this or it can be done with something simpler? - Where can I find some examples covering topic (or topics) which I need for this project. - Which OSGI implementation would be best-simplest for this task. *My knowledge of OSGI is basic. I know how bundles are described, I understand concept of OSGI container and what it does. I have never created any OSGI app yet.

  • Web Service returning object with null fields

    Never seen this one before. WebService.Implementation imp = new WebService.Implementation(); WebService.ImplementationRequest req = new WebService.ImplementationRequest(); return imp.GetValue(req); The object that imp returns is not null. It's returning an ImplementationResponse, as expected. But all of the fields in that object are null. Which is not expected. The WebService, currently, just returns some constant dummy data. We've tested this on another developer's machine, works just fine. I suppose I should also note that the WebService should throw an exception if I pass null into the GetValue method. It doesn't. Not for me. Any idea what could be wrong with my environment that could make a WebService return an object, but make every value in that object null? And somehow 'magically' return this mystery object when it should be throwing an exception?
