• Blue people on flash videos (Youtube, Vimeo, etc...)

  After a recent update I am seeing EVERYONE in any video blue. Only the people are blue. First I was thinking it was an April Fools joke about the song Blue from Eiffel 65 but it has been 4 days already. I tested on another 2 PCs, same problem. It started about a week ago I think. I am using Flash 11.2.202.228 with Firefox 11. The problem is not there if I use Google Chrome. In Chrome the Flash Player is 11.2.31.118

• How important is positive feedback in code reviews?

  Is it important to point out the good parts of the code during a code review and the reasons why it is good? Positive feedback might be just as useful for the developer being reviewed and for the others that participate in the review. We are doing reviews using an online tool, so developers can open reviews for their committed code and others can review their code within a given time period (e.g. 1 week). Others can comment on the code or other reviewer's comments. Should there be a balance between positive and negative feedback?

• New JDeveloper/ADF book hits the bookshelves

  I've just received a nice new copy of Sten Vesterli's book Oracle ADF Enterprise Application Development - Made Simple.  I was one of the technical reviewers of the book but I'm looking forward to be able to read it end-to-end in good old fashioned book format this coming week. The book bridges the gap between those existing books that describe Oracle ADF features, and real world ADF development.  So, source control, bug tracking, estimating, testing, security, packaging etc are all covered.  Of course, every project and situation is different so the book could never supply a one-size-fits-all guide, but I think its a good addition to your ADF bookshelf.  I'll hopefully post a full review in the coming weeks. Oh, and congratulations Sten,  having gone through the pain of writing my own ADF book, I take my hat off to anyone who goes through the same journey!

• Open XML SDK 2 Released

Permalink This post is a little late since the SDK was released about a week ago.  At PSC we have been using the Open XML SDK 2 since its earliest beta.  It is a very powerful tool for generating documents without using the Office DLLs.  It is also the main technology that I have been working with for the last six months.  I would suggest giving it a try.  Stay tuned here.  In the near future I will be presenting at different locations on this and other document generation technologies. • Website Access...DNS, ISP, issue?

  This isn't so much a code issue as it might be an issue with my ISP. For some reason when I visit a site very often, like one I manage or write stories on, it will just stop pulling data down after a while. It's very random when it happens, but probably happens once a week. If effects everyone who is accessing the site from this connection, and I can access other sites no problem. Also, if I go outside the office back home, which is right down the street, and access the site it is fine. I'm using Comcast in both locations. It's almost as if I have a limit on requests to each site and have hit my limit so it blocks the site for a while. Anybody have any clue what this might be?

• SCSF for Visual Studio 2010

  The Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF) version for Visual Studio 2010 is supposed to be released sometime this week.  The updated (final?) source code is available on the patterns & practices site already, but I'm guessing it could be updated again due to changes found during the final testing. You'll need the Visual Studio 2010 SDK as well as the new versions of the Guidance Automation Extensions (GAX) and the Guidance Automation Toolkit (GAT) for the SCSF. • C# Adds Optional and Named Arguments

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10. In designing the latest versions of C# and VB, Microsoft has worked to bring the two languages into closer parity. Certain features available in C# were missing in VB, and vice-a-versa. • How can I install Ubuntu Saucy Server with BTRFS?

  So, a week ago I installed the latest beta version of Ubuntu Saucy Server in a MacMini using BTRFS as only partition to mount "/" on it (I know it's not recommended to do this, but it's not the point here) with no problems et al. Everything went just "naturally"... Now with the released image of 13.10 server, I just can't get any BTRFS partition done from installer. I'm getting a "Can't create filesystem" error whenever I try to create any BTRFS partition, like the 13.10 server final installer can't handle format BTRFS partitions... Am I doing something wrong? Or it's a bug in the installer? Is there anything that I can do to workaround this and get my BTRFS partition set on installation, or I'll need to work this after the installation. I can just leave some space left and create a btrfs partition later on, with Saucy already installed and proceed to use to LXC (which is my solo purpose to have btrfs), but anyway, why installer can't do btrfs anymore?

• In the Groove: PASS Board Year 1, Q3

  It's nine months into my first year on the PASS Board and I feel like I've found my rhythm. I've accomplished one of the goals I set out for the year and have made progress on others. Here's a recap of the last few months. Anti-Harassment Policy & Process Completed In April I began work on a Code of Conduct for the PASS Summit. The Board had several good discussions and various PASS members provided feedback. You can read more about that in this blog post. Since the document was focused on issues of harassment we renamed it the "Anti-Harassment Policy " and it was approved by the Board in August. The next step was to refine the guideliness and process for enforcement of the AHP. A subcommittee worked on this and presented an update to the Board at the September meeting. You can read more about that in this post, and you can find the process document here. Global Growth Expanding PASS' reach and making the organization relevant to SQL Server communities around the world has been a focus of the Board's work in 2012. We took the Global Growth initiative out to the community for feedback, and everyone on the Board participated, via Twitter chats, Town Hall meetings, feedback forums and in-person discussions. This community participation helped shape and refine our plans. Implementing the vision for Global Growth goes across all portfolios. The Virtual Chapters are well-positioned to help the organization move forward in this area. One outcome of the Global Growth discussions with the community is the expansion of two of the VCs from country-specific to language-specific. Thanks to the leadership in Brazil & Mexico for taking the lead here. I look forward to continued success for the Portuguese- and Spanish-language Virtual Chapters. Together with the Global Chinese VC PASS is off to a good start in making the VC's truly global. Virtual Chapters The VCs continue to grow and expand. Volunteers recently rebooted the Azure and Virutalization VCs, and a new  Education VC will be launching soon. Every week VCs offer excellent free training on a variety of topics. It's the dedication of the VC leaders and volunteers that make all this possible and I thank them for it. Board meeting The Board had an in-person meeting in September in San Diego, CA.. As usual we covered a number of topics including governance changes to support Global Growth, the upcoming Summit, 2013 events and the (then) upcoming PASS election. Next Up Much of the last couple of months has been focused on preparing for the PASS Summit in Seattle Nov. 6-9. I'll be there all week;  feel free to stop me if you have a question or concern, or just to introduce yourself.  Here are some of the places you can find me: VC Leaders Meeting Tuesday 8:00 am the VC leaders will have a meeting. Yesterday I had also posted quick question here: SQL SERVER – T-SQL Scripts to Find Maximum between Two Numbers Run following code: SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT NULL AS DATA) t It will throw following error. Msg 8117, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Operand data type void type is invalid for sum operator. I can easily fix if I use ISNULL Function as displayed following. SELECT SUM(data) FROM (SELECT ISNULL(NULL,0) AS DATA) t Above script will not throw an error. However, there is one more method how this can be fixed. Can you come up with another method which will not generate error? • Morgan Stanley chooses Solaris 11 to run cloud file services

  At the EAKC2012 Conference last week in Edinburg, Robert Milkowski, Unix engineer at Morgan Stanley, presented on deploying OpenAFS on Solaris 11. It makes a great proofpoint on how ZFS and DTrace gives a definite advantage to Solaris over Linux to run AFS distributed file system services, the "cloud file system" as it calls it in his blog. Mike used ZFS to achieve a 2-3x compression ratio on data and greatly lower the TCA and TCO of the storage subsystem, and DTrace to root-cause scalability bottlenecks and improve performance. As future ideas, Mike is looking at leveraging more Solaris features like Zones, ZFS Dedup, SSD for ZFS, etc.

• HDWF [was OHDF]

  Acronyms, acronyms ... same name (Oracle Healthcare Data Warehouse Foundation). Now it goes by HDWF. Don't ask me why. HDWF Version 2.0 was released quietly on 12 May. I'm told it is available on eDelivery. I've been spending more time working on HDWF this month. There's no question Oracle is moving at full-steam on this one. I've even spent a few nights this week working on India time with the team over there. We're busy moving Oracle's Operating Room Analytics application onto the new HDWF enterprise healthcare model. It's really been a great illustration of the comprehensiveness of the model. It was easily able accomodate all of the information required by ORA downstream.

• What's so difficult about SVN merges? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I’m a Subversion geek, why should I consider or not consider Mercurial or Git or any other DVCS? Every once in a while, you hear someone saying that distributed version control (Git, HG) is inherently better than centralized version control (like SVN) because merging is difficult and painful in SVN. The thing is, I've never had any trouble with merging in SVN, and since you only ever hear that claim being made by DVCS advocates, and not by actual SVN users, it tends to remind me of those obnoxious commercials on TV where they try to sell you something you don't need by having bumbling actors pretend that the thing you already have and works just fine is incredibly difficult to use. And the use case that's invariably brought up is re-merging a branch, which again reminds me of those strawman product advertisements; if you know what you're doing, you shouldn't (and shouldn't ever have to) re-merge a branch in the first place. (Of course it's difficult to do when you're doing something fundamentally wrong and silly!) So, discounting the ridiculous strawman use case, what is there in SVN merging that is inherently more difficult than merging in a DVCS system?

• Ubuntu on AMD based Sony Vaio VPCY B15AG

  Last week I bought a AMD E350 (AMD Fusion platform) based Sony VAIO (VPCYB15AG) having AMD Radeon HD 6310 graphics, I removed Windows that came along with and installed Ubuntu 10.10 (AMD64) using USB drive. During installation my touchpad was not working, I managed through keyboard, but after completing installation & restarting the machine still there was no touchpad support. Also there's no proper graphic card drivers. Even I tried connecting the USB mouse to it but the left key is not working and had to configure the mouse as left-hand to get the left click enabled. I tried searching for any possible solutions for these but found nothing helpful, is there any hope? What should I do to enable i) enable touch pad support ii) get higher resolution 1366x768, etc?
