• Thoughts on streamlining multiple .Net apps

  We have a series of ASP.Net applications that have been written over the course of 8 years. Mostly in the first 3-4 years. They have been running quite well with little maintenance, but new functionality is being requested and we are running into IDE and platform issues. The apps were written in .Net 1.x and 2.x and run in separate spaces but are presented as a single suite of applications which use a common navigation toolbar (implemented as a user control). Every time we want to add something to a menu in the nav we have to modify it in all the apps which is a pain. Also, the various versions of Crystal reports and that we used tables to organize the visual elements and we end up with a mess, especially with all the multi-platform .Net versions running. We need to streamline the suite of apps and make it easier to add on new apps without a hassle. We also need to bring all these apps under one .Net platform and IDE. In addition, there is a WordPress blog styled to match the style of the application suite "integrated" into the UI and a link to a MediaWiki Wiki application as well. My current thinking is to use an open source content management system (CMS) like Joomla (PHP based unfortunately, but it works well) as the user interface framework for style templating and menu management. Joomla's article management would allow us to migrate the Wiki content into articles which could be published without interfering with the .Net apps. Then essentially use an IFrame within an "article" to "host" the .Net application, then... Upgrade the .Net apps to VS2010, strip out all the common header/footer controls and migrate the styles to use the style sheets used in the CMS. As I write this, I certainly realize this is a lot of work and there are optimization issues which this may cause as well as using IFrames seems a bit like cheating and I've read about issues with IFrames. I know that we could use .Net application styling, but it seems like a lot more work (not sure really). Also, the use of a CMS to handle the blog and wiki also seems appealing, unless there is a .Net CMS out there that can handle all of these requirements. Given this information, I am looking to know if I am totally going in the wrong direction? We tried to use open source and integrate it over time, but not this has become hard to maintain. Am I not aware of some technology out there that will meet our requirements? Did we do this right and should we just focus on getting the .Net streamlined? I understand that no matter what we do, it's going to be a lot of work. The communities considerable experience would be helpful. Thanks!! PS - A complete rewrite is not an option.

• About Backward Compatibility of .NET Framework 4

  We have an WPF Application build on .net framework 3.5. Some testers find if they uninstall .net framework 3.5, but install .net framework 4.0, our APP fails to launch itself. Dose this mean that .net framework 4.0 does not include all 3.5 libs, and users have to install .net 3.5 even though they have 4.0? I see here are some migration issues listed by Microsoft http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee941656.aspx#windows_presentation_foundation_wpf Are they all breaking changes so that the backward compatibility is ruined?   I know that ASP.NET MVC 1.0 is bin-deployable as explained in Phil Haack's article. Is ASP.NET MVC 2.0 also bin-deployable? Has anyone done this already that can point out potential pitfalls specific to version 2.0 if there are any? I would like to deploy a relatively simple ASP.NET MVC 2.0 onto a Windows 2008 Web server that does not have ASP.NET MVC 2.0 installed. It is running .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Thanks!

• IIS 6 Windows Authentication in ASP.Net app fails

  I am trying to install an ASP.Net app on an IIS6 webserver. The site requires the user to authenticate with windows, and this works on several other apps on the same server. In IIS I have enabled anonymous access and windows authentication. In web.config, authentication is set to: <authentication mode="Windows"/> and authorization...: <authorization> <allow roles="Users"/> <deny users="*"/> </authorization> Ie. allow all users in role "Users" and deny everybody else. This is the approach that is working with several other apps on the same server. If I run the site, I am prompted for username and password. If I remove the line: <deny users="*"/> I can access the site and everything works - but the user credentials are not passed to the site (Page.User.Identity.Name returns a blank string in ASP.Net). The site has identical (inherited) file permissions as other working sites on the server. The only difference in authentication/authorization between this site and the other working sites is, that this runs Asp.Net 4 (but there are other working asp.net 4 sites on the server as well). What am I missing here? Where should I look?

I want to use L2E since it s very convenient to my company's apps, I created a demo project, the demo does run on every machine but when I, lets say, press a button that has some code that uses the entity I get this error: specified store provider cannot be found in the configuration, or is not valid. note that I get this error only on machines that does not have VS2008 installed, on these machines (the ones with VS2008) the demo works well. any advice is appreciated.   While converting a project that used SlimDX, and therefore has unmanaged code, to .NET 4.0 I ran into the following error: Mixed mode assembly is built against version 'v2.0.50727' of the runtime and cannot be loaded in the 4.0 runtime without additional configuration information. Googling around gave me the solution, which is to add this to the applications config: <configuration> <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> <supportedRuntime version="v4.0"/> </startup> </configuration> My question is, what is the useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy doing? • How to update model in the database, from asp.net MVC2, using Entity Framework?

  Hello. I'm building ASP.NET MVC2 application, and using Entity Framework as ORM. I am having troubles updating object in the database. Every time I try entity.SaveChanges(), EF inserts new line in the table, regardless of do I want update, or insert to be done. I tried attaching (like in this next example) object to entity, but then I got {"An object with a null EntityKey value cannot be attached to an object context."} Here's my simple function for inserts and updates (it's not really about vehicles, but it's simpler to explain like this, although I don't think that this effects answers at all)... public static void InsertOrUpdateCar(this Vehicles entity, Cars car) { if (car.Id == 0 || car.Id == null) { entity.Cars.AddObject(car); } else { entity.Attach(car); } entitet.SaveChanges(); } I even tried using AttachTo("Cars", car), but I got the same exception. • Which datagrid to use for ASP.NET MVC2 project?

  Hi, I am developing a commercial MVC2 app that requires a grid that has callback update in some form to support 10,000+ rows. It should also support relatively rich content (icons, multiline descriptions etc). Although it requires the usual paging/scrolling/sorting features it does not need support for grouping. So nothing that special. The commercial grids I looked at were Component Art (http://www.componentart.com/products/aspnetmvc/datagrid/) and Telerik (http://www.telerik.com/products/aspnet-mvc/grid.aspx) which both look pretty good but may be a little OTT for what I need. They are also $800 and $999 respectively (1 developer). I've also looked at jqGrid (http://www.trirand.net/download.aspx) and the grid from MvcContrib. These appear ok but for a commercial app I am concerned that these may be risky options - though could be wrong there. I'd really appreciate any views/exprience on either the above grids or perhaps you can suggest a better option/approach. FYI I am using EF4 and C#. Cheers

  Hi, In my ASP.NET MVC app I am rendering out a checkbox using the following code: <%= Html.CheckBoxFor(i=>i.ReceiveRSVPNotifications) %> Now I see that this renders both the checkbox input tag and a hidden input tag. The problem that I am having is when I try retrieve the value from the checkbox using the FormCollection: FormValues["ReceiveRSVPNotifications"] I get the value "true,false". When looking at the rendered out HTML I can see the following: <input id="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" name="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" value="true" type="checkbox"> <input name="ReceiveRSVPNotifications" value="false" type="hidden"> So the FormValues collection seems to join these two values since they have the same name. Any Ideas?

When i create a new object for CustomerMaster and trying to update the fields using TryUpdateModel, it is not updating. But the TryUpdateModel is working fine on the Edit Profile Page and that particular record is referenced.   How can I pass in the current datetime parameter to a SOAP request? I know you can pass in parameters by adding a datasource to the web test project and reference it like this {{DataSource.TableName.FieldName}}. But I want to pass in current datetime parameter as a dynamic value (something like DateTime.Now). How do I go about doing this? • Why is my asp:Substitution control suddenly not working in ASP.NET 4.0?

  I just upgraded my site from ASP.NET 3.5 to 4.0. I've been working through some breaking changes and there were more than I expected. One I can't figure out, however, is why my <asp:Substitution /> control suddenly stopped working like it should. It's supposed to ignore the output cache settings of the parent page and update upon every request. For some reason that isn't happening. It's caching for the full 10 minutes (the OutputCache setting for my home page). Any ideas?

  Hi guys, I've been reading up on stackoverflow about creating voting systems in PHP that minimize abuse/multiple voting from the same user, but I haven't come across the answer to my question. I've got an application where users don't need to register to vote or "like" an entry. Obviously, I want to minimize abuse and I don't want to limit votes per IP address because some organisations (mine included) use shared IP addresses. I've never used sessions in a non-authenticated system before, but since this application is centered around entry votes I was wondering if this approach would work and whether there were any disadvantages such as performance implications, and whether it's even possible to use sessions in this way: start a session when the website is loaded allow one vote per item per session If this is a bad idea, my alternative options would be to allow a reasonable number of votes per IP address (say 25), or put a time limit between votes from the same IP address. What do you guys recommend?

• It is okay to migrate to Asp.NET 4.0 now?

  Okay today, as most of you noticed Framework 4.0 has been released. I've been working on a project which is being built on framework 3.5. Since I want to use dynamic keyword and most of the asp.net features like Tableless Menu Control, ClientIDMode and clean web.config etc. I am kinda urging to migrate the unfinished project to 4.0 but I am little hesitating about that.Some times I think it is way better to wait for SP1. So what do you think about it? You guys will migrate to unfinished projects or will still hang out with 3.5 for a while. Thanks.
