• How to download an MP3 or ZIP file onto mobile devices

  I want to be able to download digital goods to smartphone users (music in format .mp3 or .zip). But iPhone and iPad do not allow direct forced downloads. How can I provide mobile users with digital downloads? I use PHP. The only way I can think of to do this is to use the Dropbox Web API to transfer files to the user's Dropbox account, which then synchronizes with their mobile device. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

• SMB2 traffic crashes network?

  We've been having significant network slowdown issues over the past few weeks, primarily on a Friday morning. We run Windows 7 client machines, with Windows Server 2008 R2 servers. What generally happens is the network starts to slow down massively at 08:55 and resumes normal speeds at around 09:20 This affects everything on the network from logging on, resetting passwords, opening programs and files etc. On my client machine, Physical Memory usage remains at around 40% (normal) and CPU usage hovers around 0-10% idle. The servers show memory usage spikes massively and remains quite intense during the times mentioned above. I have taken several wireshark captures, both during the slowdown and when the network operates fine. One of the main things I noticed is the increase in SMB2 entries in the wireshark log during the slowdown. One of the interesting things to note is the last entry in the examples above is for a PDF file. That file was not open anywhere on my computer, or on anyone elses. No folders with the files in were open either. When I took another capture when the network was running fine, there were hardly any SMB2 entries, and the ones that were displayed were mainly from Wireshark. We currently have around 800 computers, 90 Macs and 200 Laptops and Netbooks. Our concern is if this traffic is happening on my computer, is it happening on other computers, and if so, would those computers be adding to the slow network issues? Again, this only happens during certain times. We're pretty sure its not the our antivirus. Is there anything to narrow down whats initializing this SMB traffic during the particular times? Or if anyone has any extra advice, or links to resources it would be appreciate.

• download management

  I download many files, usually 2 or 3 a day, often 10ish. Some of them are duplicates because I just can't be bothered to find the original in my downloads folder. I have previously tried DAP and used that to create a new subfolder for each day's download. yet I have found this insufficient as sometimes I wish to find files by name/file type or I have multiple parts of downloads over more than one day. Another problem I have found is zips/rars/etc after downloading them and extracting them I then have the zip and the folder. I like it like on a Mac where it automatically extracts the zip after it has been downloaded and removes the zip. What I'd like to be able to do is sort the downloads by date, but dynamically so they are just in the big downloads folder, but I can just press a button and it will show me all the files from a particular site, or from a particular day or by a certain file type. Is there any software that will do this? I use Chrome as a browser but also have Firefox and like that. Jonathan

• How do I compile DarWINE in PowerPC Mac OS X 10.4.11...?

  So far I've tried using MacPorts which gives me this error: /Error: Cannot install wine for the arch(s) 'powerpc' because Error: its dependency pkgconfig is only installed for the archs 'i386 ppc'. Error: Unable to execute port: architecture mismatch To report a bug, etc... (I'm not allowed to post two links due to being a new poster...)./ I've also tried using the build script I found in the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK download that I found on the DarWINE SourceForge.net Project Page... I've also tried the build script that I found at http://code.google.com/p/osxwinebuilder/#Building_Wine_via_the_script... None of these attempts to build DarWINE have actually worked. Whenever I build using the DarWINE build script I run it as follows: /1. I decompress the WINE tarball into ~/Downloads/WINE 2. I cd into ~/Downloads/DarWINE. 3. I run ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2.2 or ./winemaker ~/Downloads/WINE/wine-1.2-rc2 (the reason for trying WINE 1.2-rc2 is that some people managed to get it to build on PowerPC Macs running 10.5.8...)./ I made sure to install Xcode Tools 2.5 & all the SDKs too... The net result is either a syntax type error resulting from trying to run the checked out Google Code DarWINE build script or a bunch of make errors when trying to run the official DarWINE build script that I forcefully extracted from the DarWINE 0.9.12 SDK .dmg file by using Pacifist. I trying to build DarWINE on mid-April 2006 1.42 GHz eMac with DL SuperDrive with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR with 2 GBs of RAM running 10.4.11 as I mentioned earlier... • Troubles with apache and virtual hosts

  I have a BIG problem. I have VPS with Debian OS, and LAMP installed. Fresh install. For control panel i using Webmin. Now i trying to setup multiple sub-domains on my server using webmin for example: downloads.my-domain.com cpanel.my-domains.com forum.my-domains.com But problem what is happening is next, while i using no virtual hosts, everything works perfectly when i accessing it using my-domain.com, but when i add Virtual host, i cann access it but my-domain.com becomes unavilable because it redirects to virtual hosts i added. When i add more than 2 virtual hosts, problem is still here. Also, when i try to access to virtual server for example downloads.my-domain.com, it redirects again to cpanel.my-domains.com When i delete virtual hosts, access to my-domain.com is succesfull... What i known: - That is not problem with my domain provider. I correctly added subdomains and added host record to my VPS IP. - I added unique name to every single virtual host. - There are no two same virtual hosts - Every virtaul hosts have own directory: for example: downloads.my-domain.com have own WWW dir: /var/downloads Can somebody help me? • How to automate downloading files?

  I got a book which had a pass to access digital versions of hi-res scans of much of the artwork in the book. Amazing! Unfortunately the presentation of all the these are 177 pages of 8 images each with links to zip files of jpgs. It is extremely tedious to browse, and I would love to be able to get all the files at once rather than sitting and clicking through each one separately. archive_bookname/index.1.htm - archive_bookname/index.177.htm each of those pages have 8 links each to the files linking to files such as <snip>/downloads/_Q6Q9265.jpg.zip, <snip>/downloads/_Q6Q7069.jpg.zip, <snip>/downloads/_Q6Q5354.jpg.zip. that don't quite go in order. I cannot get a directory listing of the parent /downloads/ folder. Also, the file is behind a login-wall, so doing a non-browser tool, might be difficult without knowing how to recreate the session info. I've looked into wget a little but I'm pretty confused and have no idea if it will help me with this. Any advice on how to tackle this? Can wget do this for me automatically?

• Folder name in sidebar is changed, how to get it back?

  My OSX is Simplified Chinese, so the user folders in finder's sidebar is like this: AirDrop ???? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? These stand for AirDrop, Applications, Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Musics and Pictures. However, now with an accident, my "Downloads" folders in sidebar is changed to its original english name, and I don't why, so my sidebar is now look like: AirDrop ???? ?? ?? Downloads ?? ?? ?? I know do symbol link to these folders would cause such case but I cannot find any symbol links to my ~/Downloads folder. So is there any way to get the Chinese name back? it looks so weired and dirty. I have a time machine backup 3 days ago, but I have quite a lot modifications to my user folder these 3 days, so time machine may not be a good choice.

• Redirecting to a diferent exe for download based on user agent

  I own a Linux-Apache site where I host exe files for download. Now, when a user clicks this link to my site (published on another site): http://mysite.com/downloads/file.exe I need to dynamically check their user agent and redirect them to either http://mysite.com/downloads/file-1.exe or http://mysite.com/downloads/file-2.exe It seems to me that I have to options: Put a .htaccess file stating that .exe files should be considered to be scripts. Then write a script that checks the user agent and redirects to a real exe placed in another folder. Call this script file.exe. Use Apache mod-rewrite to point file.exe to redirect.php. Which of these is better? Any other considerations? Thanks.

• `wget` is not recognized or either can't find the file

  if i use cd C:\Program Files (x86)\GnuWin32\bin then i'm able to use wget commands for example: wget http://www.ultralightnews.com/trikes/images/trikes/dfs-singletrike.jpg but i can't find the file back, i looked in c:\ and in the bin folder mentioned above and in GnuWin32\etc If i try wget -O C:\Users\clankill3r\Downloads\wgetfolder wget http://www.ultralightnews.com/trikes/images/trikes/dfs-singletrike.jpg then it says Permision denied, i did allow all permisions possible for every group / user. Some people say it downloads to the current folder your working in (that's why i looked in the bin). But i thought let's try to run the command from another folder so i used: 'cd C:\Users\clankill3r\Downloads\wgetfolderand then the wget comman but then it says thewget` command is not recognized. can someone help?

• Download resume support blocked by isp?

  Can ISP block resume support for downloads ? I'm using IDM (internet download manager) to download of the internet from resume supported websites, yet I am unable to resume downloads. I tried different computers with the same result. Turned off firewall, didn't have any effect i was able to download with no issues until a couple of days ago. Another thing i noticed is that before IDM used to try to connect to several connections to speed up my download, but now it can only connect to one connection. Also i tried to download using my vpn, and i was able to download and resume downloads with no problem.

• Virtually the fastest way to try Solaris 11 (and Solaris 10 zones)

  If you're looking to try out Solaris 11, there are the standard ISO and USB image downloads on the main page.  Those are great if you're looking to install Solaris 11 on hardware, and we hope you will.  But if you take the time to look down the page, you'll find a link off to the Oracle Solaris 11 Virtual Machine downloads.  There are two downloads there:A pre-built Solaris 10 zoneA pre-built Solaris 11 VM for use with VirtualBoxIf you're looking to try Solaris 11 on x86, the second one is what you want.  Of course, this assumes you have VirtualBox already (and if you don't, now's the time to try it, it's a terrific free desktop virtualization product).  Once you complete the 1.8 GB download, it's a simple matter of unzipping the archive and a few quick clicks in VirtualBox to get a Solaris 11 desktop booted.  While it's booting, you'll get to run through the new system configuration tool (that'll be the subject of a future posting here) to configure networking, a user account, and so on.So what about that pre-built Solaris 10 zone download?  It's a really simple way to get yourself acquainted with the Solaris 10 zones feature, which you may well find indispensible in transitioning an existing Solaris 10 infrastructure to Solaris 11.  Once you've downloaded the file, it's a self-extracting executable that'll configure the zone for you, all you have to supply is an IP address for the zone.  It's really quite slick!I expect we'll do a lot more pre-built VM's and zones going forward, as that's a big part of being a cloud OS; if there's one that would be really useful for you, let us know.

• MPlayer does not work

  Using the xubuntu desktop, on Ubuntu Raring updated from Quantal. MPlayer never really worked. No video, no audio, nothing. • Impossible to boot Ubuntu on a USB stick (OS X Montain Lion)

  I know this has been discussed over and over but I still cannot run Ubuntu on a USB stick. Here's the step I followed: 1. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 (ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso) from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop which I renamed 'ubuntu.iso'. I bought my Mac mid-2010, it has an Intel processor. 2. I formated my 16GB USB stick with HFS+ File System following this tutorial: http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/how-to-format-a-drive-or-partition-with-the-hfs-file-system 3. I opened a terminal and typed: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/Downloads/ubuntu.img ~/Downloads/ubuntu.iso It created ubuntu.iso.dmg 4. I ran 'diskutil list' and identified the device node assigned to the USB. 5. I unmounted it: diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2 6. Then, I entered the command: sudo dd if=~/Downloads/ubuntu.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk2 bs=1m. It seemed to work. A Mac message poped up saying that the system doesn't recognized the disk, I pressed 'ignore'. 7. I ejected the USB using diskutil eject /dev/disk2, then removed the USB. 8. I rebooted the computer, plugged the USB key, pressed ALT.I could see my Macintosh partition and my Windows partition, but couldn't see my USB stick. Any help will be very appreciated :) Victor

• Transmission shutdown script for multiple torrents?

  I have written a shutdown script for transmission. Transmission calls the script after a torrent download finishes. The script runs perfectly on my machine (Ubuntu 11.04 & 12.04). #!/bin/bash sleep 300s # default display on current host DISPLAY=:0.0 # find out if monitor is on. Default timeout can be configured from screensaver/Power configuration. STATUS=`xset -display $DISPLAY -q | grep 'Monitor'` echo $STATUS if [ "$STATUS" == " Monitor is On" ] ### Then check if its still downloading a torrent. Couldn't figure out how.(May be) by monitoring network downstream activity? then notify-send "Downloads Complete" "Exiting transmisssion now" pkill transmission else notify-send "Downloads Complete" "Shutting Down Computer" dbus-send --session --type=method_call --print-reply --dest=org.gnome.SessionManager /org/gnome/SessionManager org.gnome.SessionManager.RequestShutdown fi exit 0 The problem is that when I'm downloading more than one file, when the first one finishes, transmission executes the script. I would like to do that but after all downloads are completed. I want to put a 2nd check ( right after monitor check) if it is still downloading another torrent. Is there any way to do this?

  Visual studio 2010 is an amzing release from Microsoft. I have tried the beta 1,2 of Visual Studio 2010 and finally the full version is released. I am also interested in the latest edition of Windows which nothing but our Windows 7. Next to Vista I like this version very much. Out of curiosity I have installed the prebuild version of Windows 7. I tried installing the express edition here and it failed making me disappointed. I tried two or three times and finally I decided to download the trial version of Windows 7. After that I can install the Visual Studio 2010 express edition easily. I have given the link below from where I have downloaded the file. http://www.microsoft.com/express/downloads/ Here the link give is through Web PI Installer. Other option is you can download the ISO image file and burn them to a disc or use a virtual disc This Visual Web developer will provide the Sql Server engine alone. To get a Sql Server Management Studio get from the following link http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/InstallOptions.aspx That's it all the things necessary for the web application programming is ready. Ah I forget to tell about the Silverlight. • Build vs Rebuild

  Build means compile and link only the source files that have changed since the last build, while Rebuild means compile and link all source files regardless of whether they changed or not. Build is the normal thing to do and is faster. Sometimes the versions of project target components can get out of sync and rebuild is necessary to make the build successful. In practice, you never need to Clean. Build or Rebuild Solution builds or rebuilds all projects in the your solution, while Build or Rebuild <project name> builds or rebuilds the StartUp project. To set the StartUp project, right click on the desired project name in the Solution Explorer tab and select Set as StartUp project. The project name now appears in bold. Compile just compiles the source file currently being edited. Useful to quickly check for errors when the rest of your source files are in an incomplete state that would prevent a successful build of the entire project. Ctrl-F7 is the shortcut key for Compile. All source files that have changed are saved when you request a build/rebuild, so you don't have to save them first. When you run your executable (F5 or Ctrl-F5), Visual Studio saves all your changed source files and builds anything that changed, so you don't need to explicitly do those steps every time. This allows for quick "trial and error" debugging. • Access denied error when building project in Xcode after fresh SVN checkout

  I am seeing 2 strange access denied errors which I cant solve.
