  • Dotted subdomain name or new domain?

    I have a company website hosted at www.BRAND.com (where BRAND is a generic name). The company want to develop a "micro website" for one of their campaigns, named "Inspired By BRAND". I have two directions: inspired.by.BRAND.com - which I personally don't like too much. I don't know why but I don't recall any web address similar to this one subdomain.subdomain.domain.com. inspired.BRAND.com - which I this is best suited for it. Fewer dots and similar to "more friendly" addresses subdomain.domain.com. Any hints, guidelines, any thoughts is well appreciated. Thanks in advance

  • Ubuntu One Preferences does not show usage, name, e-mail, current plan

    Ubuntuone is correctly synchronizing selected files between two computers running Ubuntu 10.10. When I open Ubuntuone Preferences, Account tab, on one computer it does not display the usage, name e-mail or current plan. On the other computer all information is shown correctly. On the Devices tab the 2 computers are not shown. They do show correctly on the other computer. Any ideas on how to fix this problem. I have reinstalled Ubuntuone per this link.

    In several of my programming courses in the University, my teachers always told me the following: A function and a procedure are basically the same thing: the only difference is that a function returns a value, and the procedure doesn't. That means that this: function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } ... is a function, and this: function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } ... is a procedure. In the same train of thought, I've seen that a method is the equivalent of a function in the OOP world. That means that this: class Example { function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } } Is a method — but how do you call this? class Example { function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } } What's the equivalent name, or how do you call a method that doesn't returns anything?

  • Is there a name for this issue?

    I was just talking to my partner about how hard it is to personally judge how good your product is after a while because you use it so often. You literally spend hours on your computer doing nothing but work on this Consumer Facing application, and you start to feel a little fatigue of using it over and over and over, at least a hundred times a day. You get scared this fatigue may mean the product you are building may have the same effect on the users and might mean you are doing something wrong. All i'm asking is, is there a name for this in product development? For the fact that as a designer+ programmer+everything else, your product might not suck as much as you think simply because you spend way to much time with it, or a variation of this?

  • Huge company wants my domain name

    Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I'll give it a go. I simply require a little advice; A very large hosted e-commerce platform emailed me a while back and basically asked me to transfer my domain name to them. They made no offer but simply said 'why not change your domain to xx - xx instaead of xxxx' Not they own all the equivalent names in .com, .org all of them apart from my .co.uk I am a registered partner of theirs and my website is a portfolio of all my themes but I also get a lot of enquires through it. I had heard rumors this company is opening an office in the UK! I'm right in thinking I shouldn't just roll over right? I've put some much effort in to SEO and building my reputation... I can't just give it up surly?

  • Name for this antipattern? Fields as local variables

    In some code I'm reviewing, I'm seeing stuff that's the moral equivalent of the following: public class Foo { private Bar bar; public MethodA() { bar = new Bar(); bar.A(); bar = null; } public MethodB() { bar = new Bar(); bar.B(); bar = null; } } The field bar here is logically a local variable, as its value is never intended to persist across method calls. However, since many of the methods in Foo need an object of type Bar, the original code author has just made a field of type Bar. This is obviously bad, right? Is there a name for this antipattern?

    Hi guys, I've just completed my first app and having tested I'm ready for submission. However, despite numerous web searches and reading, I'm struggling to finalise the method required to enable me to have a different name on the app store to the name that appears under the app on the device home screen. In the plist.info file there is reference to bundle display name, executable name, bundle name, bundle identifier, product name etc. So, for example, say I would like the app store name to display as: HELLO WORLD and I would like the name below the icon on the device home screen to display as: HELLO How should I enter the data in the plist.info file to achieve the above?   • Efficient algorithm to find first available name

    I have an array containing names of items. I want to give the user the option to create items without specifying their name, so my program will have to supply a unique default name, like "Item 1". The challenge is that the name has to be unique so i have to check all the array for that default name, and if there is an item with the same name i have to change the name to be "Item 2" and so on until i find an available name. The obvious solution will be something like that: String name; for (int i = 0 , name = "Item " + i ; !isAvailable(name) ; i++); My problem with that algorithm is that it runs at O(N^2). I wonder if there is a known (or new) more efficient algorithm to solve this case. In other words my question is this: Is there any algorithm that finds the first greater-than-zero number that dose NOT exist in a given array, and runs at less that N^2? Thanks!

  • Why not all users can log in to a network computer by using <network computer name>/<user name> form

    There is a file server in my office that is not connected to my office LAN. In this server there are folders that are shared. This server is connected to a switch and a wireless router. Everyone who wants to access this server uses wireless network connection. They log in to this server by providing user name and password registered to the server. Some people can log in to my office file server by providing user name in (the server name)/(user name) format, while other must use (the server IP address)/(user name) format. Why is it like this? I need everyone can access the file server by providing user name in (the server name)/(user name) format. I have tried to change the %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, as some suggested, but it won't work. Any other suggestion?

    Hi, Can somebody tell me how to rename the DB server instance name and a DB name in SQL Server 2005? Right Now I Have SERVER/OLDNAME -- oldnameDB I want to change the server instance and also change the db name. I have tried: EXEC sp_renamedb 'oldName', 'newName' and that has changed the dbname as it appers in the tree directory. But, when I do "select @@servername" it is the old name. Also, the MDF and LDF files are still the old name. How do change instance and db names as a clean sweep across the server? Thanks.

    assume i have a domain name which will be forwarded to my public ip (web server) automatically. in IIS 6, ip is public ip port is 6666, advanced - host value is www.hello.com firewall is open for 6666(web server port) and 53(DNS port), DMZ of router is my physical address in DNS, i have already had a zone called oldhello.com. And i expect a new domain name. So i have addded a new zone called hello.com and checked SOA server (P) is one.hello.local. then added a new host called one, full name is one.hello.com, ip address 192.168.7.3(my address in router) and then add a alias(CNAME) www, full name is www.hello.com, FQDN i choose the host i added before (one.hello.com) i expected that when i type the public ip in browser, can it be changed to domain name automatically. if not set host value www.hello.com, use public ip i can see the web however, after set up host value www.hello.com, browser show bad request invalid hostname

  • Change Exchange Server Name Before Upgrade

    I need to upgrade the Exchange Server from 2003 to 2010. I'm physically changing servers as well as software. I'm worried about redirecting the Outlook clients after the upgrade is going to be troublesome. So, I thought that before doing anything else, that I would change the name of the Exchange server on the client from 'server-name.domain.com' to 'mail.domain.com' and add an entry in dns that points 'mail.domain.com' to the same ip as 'server-name.domain.com'. However, even though I added 'mail.domain.com' to the dns, I cannot get the Exchange server to change to that on the client computers. I found out that the Outlook clients check the Global Catalog for the name of the Exchange server computer. My question is: can I change the Global Catalog address of the Exchange computer from 'server-name.domain.com' to 'mail.domain.com'? If so/not, is there a better way to do this? thanks.

  • Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

    I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously.     I see this a lot in frameworks. You have a master class which other classes register with. The master class then decides which of the registered classes to delegate the request to. In one variation the sub classes provide a list of things they can process which the ProcessorDelegator understands. The other variation which is listed above in fake code is where each is queried in turn. This is similar to chain of command but I don't think its the same as chain of command means that the processor needs to pass to other processors. The other variation is where the ProcessorDelegator itself implements the interface which means you can get trees of ProcessorDelegators which specialise further. In the above example you could have a numeric processor delegator which delegates to an even/odd processor and a string processordelegator which delegates to different strings. My question is does this pattern have a name.

  • Hosting several HTTP servers on single domain name

    Several people have got a single domain name server.company.com server, where they are now supposed to host their infrastructure or temporal projects, written in different ways even in different programming languages. How do they divide the domain? Split into subdomains: john.server.company.com, kate.server.company.com, etc. This would need a lot of admins' assistance, time, etc. -- there would be no way for John and Kate to do it themselves. Split into url namespaces: server.company.com/john/, server.company.com/kate/, etc. Pro: They now can make a single welcome page at root with any additional info (if they need?) Con: Each server would need to know their namespace string constant, and hrefs like / whould need patching. Split into ports: server.company.com:8080, server.company.com:8081, etc. and make a single :80 welcome page. Pro: They still can make a single welcome page at :80 Con: ??? I would like to know more pros and cons for 2 and 3 solution.
