  • Previous power of 2

    - by Horacio
There is a lot of information on how to find the next power of 2 of a given value (see refs) but I cannot find any to get the previous power of two. The only way I find so far is to keep a table with all power of two up to 2^64 and make a simple lookup. Acius' Snippets gamedev Bit Twiddling Hacks Stack Overflow

  • Simple 3x3 matrix inverse code (C++)

    - by batty
What's the easiest way to compute a 3x3 matrix inverse? I'm just looking for a short code snippet that'll do the trick for non-singular matrices, possibly using Cramer's rule. It doesn't need to be highly optimized. I'd prefer simplicity over speed. I'd rather not link in additional libraries. Primarily I was hoping to have this on Stack Overflow so that I wouldn't have to hunt around for it or rewrite from scratch again next time.

  • Is information a subset of data?

    - by Jason Baker
I apologize as I don't know whether this is more of a math question that belongs on mathoverflow or if it's a computer science question that belongs here. That said, I believe I understand the fundamental difference between data, information, and knowledge. My understanding is that information carries both data and meaning. One thing that I'm not clear on is whether information is data. Is information considered a special kind of data, or is it something completely different?

  • Is it possible to capture mouse events on a scroll bar in JavaScript

    - by Nathan
I have an HTML element with overflow: scroll. The click event listener registered with the element is triggered when I click on the element, but not when I click on the scroll bar for the element. Is it possible to capture mouse events which occur on an HTML element's scroll bar? The reason I want to do this is to make a visual popup element disappear when ever a click event occurs anywhere outside the popup element.

  • Drawable advantage over bitmap for memory in android

    - by Tabish
This question is linked with the answers in the following question: Error removing Bitmaps[Android] Is there any advantage of using Drawable over Bitmap in Android in terms of memory de-allocation ? I was looking at Romain Guy project Shelves and he uses SoftReference for images caches but I'm unable to search where is the code which is de-allocating these Drawables when SoftReference automatically reclaims the memory for Bitmap. As far as I know .recycle() has to be explicitly called on the Bitmap for it to be de-allocated.

  • Dynamic FIFO queue

    - by sam
Create a 4K buffer for storing 4 independent FIFO (first-in/first-out) queues of single byte character data. The organization of the FIFO should be as efficient as possible for storing the 4 queues to support dynamic (not fixed) queue size, insuring that no queue will overflow any other queue and given that it is unknown which queues may have the least # of elements and which queues may have the most # of elements.

  • Use PHP to create a DOC file on a Unix Box based on an HTML webform selection

    - by Gerald Oakham
Hello, I have an HTML file which contains a webform with multiple questions which have a YES / NO responses. If the question has a YES answer, I would like a predefined ( per question ) section of text to be written to a DOC file on the server, but only AFTER the submit button has been pressed ( this way, if the user changes their mind and changes an answer form YES to NO, I won't have to re-write the doc ). When the user has clicked Submit, The file should be presented as a download. Any Ideas

  • How do Tomcat examples work?

    - by Bialecki
Alright, this is a very simple question. I just installed Tomcat 6 on my Mac to play around with it, and every tutorial I look at says the first thing to do to create a new web application is to add a line to the server.xml file with defines a new Context. Fair enough. However, my question is, I don't see a line in there for the example web applications, so how do those work?

  • Working with processes in C

    - by Gary
Hi, just a quick question regarding C and processes. In my program, I create another child process and use a two-directional pipe to communicate between the child and parent. The child calls execl() to run yet another program. My question is: I want the parent to wait n amount of seconds and then check if the program that the child has run has exited (and with what status). Something like waitpid() but if the child doesn't exit in n seconds, I'd like to do something different.

  • How effective are technical test(s) and is it necessary?

    - by The Elite Gentleman
Hi everyone, I recently took a Java technical test (for a company who wanted are looking for senior java developers) and, funny enough, I only realised the technical terms of what I've been doing all along after I've written the test. I'm not too IT jargon when it comes to development but I can pretty much code and create solutions unaware that I'm using design pattern (or the specifics of that design pattern) or technology. I learned things such as JMS, Frameworks, etc. while programming at home and having to google stuff online to problems I have. Others e.g. IoC, Surrogates in Databases, etc., I have used extensively without knowing that it had a name for it. Do you think that these technical test are effective and why? What interesting questions did you find that boggled your brains out while the clock kept ticking? Seeing that IT is vastly evolving at a rapid rate, do we have to constantly be updated with new terms that comes out? Some questions I was asked : What object oriented principle is violated by this architectural mechanism for dot notation? Is indexing tables effective for range query or point query search? What is ThreadLocal and what is it used for? Method overloading vs Method overriding. What is the difference between the 2? What is dynamic binding? Now, imagine my poor head trying to understand these jargons (considering I use it almost everyday) PS The question was not a programming question, where you have a problem and write code to solve it. Rather, a thinking type question and you write answers (against the clock). Update I clearly didn't come out clearly as I should have. There are those that are technically "book smart" but with very little hands-on experience and vice versa. So, the question (in connection to what I've asked) is that are these technical test seeking "book smart" people or people with lots of hands-on experience (some who are not that well clued up with too much book-smart jargons). How effective is it then, for companies to look for developers if most of the questions are too terminology-centric? (if that's the correct term, :))

  • Is Programming Right for me?

    - by L1th1um
I'm interested in programming, but it seems to me that I can't get into it. Every time I've tried to learn a language and stuff by looking through tutorials or books I'd never get past the part where I use the syntax to make something. And by interest, I mean that I read stack overflow a lot, coding horror, and stuff but the actual coding part is hard for me to get into. Did anybody start this way? How did you get past this block?

  • How do "professionals" make a GUI in java ?

    - by Jules Olléon
Thanks for your answers to my previous question about GUI in java. I now wonder what are the solutions chosen by professionals to get a nice GUI, for "real" applications. Do you use swing and JComponents and just change the "look and feel" ? Do you prefer awt or another library ? Sorry if that question sounds weird, I'm a student and I don't really know how java is used in the real world...

  • How do you transfer data from SQL Server to db4o?

    - by dde
I came across this question after searching for a ODBC or JDBC. To my surprise, since I am new to db4o I found there are tools to browse db4o, including a Netbeans and Eclipse plug in. However, when it comes to the question at hand, I only found one company, and the product is not being sold nor demoed (makes me think is not ready yet). So, how do you transfer data? Is there a tool or script I have not found yet?

  • Two Questions about the WebBrowser Control

    - by Rudi
How can I get an HtmlElement if the source code doesn't have the "id=''", but only has the "name=''". Document.GetElementById() doesn't work, and Document. All[""] doesn't work (obviously, because there is no ID. How can I simulate a form post? Question 1 is more important because I found it harder to search. Question 2 I think i can get with more searching.

  • regular expression of 0's and 1's

    - by Lopa
Hello all I got this question which asks me to figure out why is it foolish to write a regular expression for the language that consists of strings of 0's and 1's that are palindromes( they read the same backwards and forwards). part 2 of the question says using any formal mechanism of your choice, show how it is possible to express the language that consists of strings of 0's and 1's that are palindromes?

  • Is there a more clear way to write out multiple functions that are part of an object?

    - by Gemma
I have the following: $scope.modalReset = function () { gridService.modalReset($scope); } $scope.rowAction = function (action, row) { gridService.rowAction(action, $scope, row, 'Question'); } $scope.submitItem = function (formData) { gridService.submitItem($scope, 'Question', formData); } Is there a way that these function calls could be written more simply. I am not looking to combine them. There are all functions that are part of the scope object.

  • Role of Combinators in Concatenative/Tacit Programming Languages.

    - by Bubba88
Hi! I have a question about what exact role do higher-order compinators (or function producers) hold in concatenative/tacit programming. Additionally I would like to ask if there is another way to implement concatenative programming language rather than directly manipulating the stack. This might look like a newbie question, so if you feel like it, you can freely direct me to external source.
