• "SC.EXE config" and dollar sign in service name

  Say I want to make Windows Service startup dependent on SQL Server. In my case service name for SQL Server is MSSQL$SQL11 (SQL11 is SQL Server instance name) However, when I issue this command: SC.EXE config MyService depend= MSSQL$SQL11 everything after the dollar sign is ignored. When I go to "Dependencies" tab in "Services" SQL Server is not listed. When I check matching registry key it becomes clear why: it only has MSSQL. At this point I have to edit registry by hand to change MSSQL to MSSQL$SQL11 and then everything works as expected. Putting quotes around MSSQL$SQL11 doesn't help. Is there a way to specify $ in the middle of the SC.EXE argument string?

• How can I rewrite / redirect URL's in Glassfish V3?

  Hi, I'd like to simplify the URL's to access a Glassfish V3 application by removing file extensions and otherwise shortening URL's. I've already set my application as the default application, so that there is no need to include the context root in the URL. I'd like to: * Remove file extensions * Shorten the URL to files deep in the folder structure I'd like to do this using pattern matching rather than on a per file basis (Site is small at the moment but will change frequently and grow). Some examples of what I'd like to do: * foo.com/bar.html - foo.com/bar * foo.com/folder1/folder2/bar2.html - foo.com/bar2 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cheers, Jin

• Any command line tool checking windows domain password?

  Does Windows provide a command line utility that lets me check a domain user's password? It is sufficient that the utility returns success(0) if I provide a matching domain user name and password. Alternatively, is there a simple VB/JS script that can do this? I'm the Intranet admin of my company and have the default password set for corporate staff, so I'd like to quickly scan which users have not changed their default password. Better yet, are there any books or websites which cover such topics so that I can get more information?

• I need to duplicate software packages installed on one HPUX system to a test system

  I am very inexperienced with HPUX and need to duplicate a production server for a test environment. I have 11.11 on the prod server and have completed the base install on the test server. What I need is a way to add the installed packages from the prod server to the test server. Unfortunately I haven't the foggiest idea how to do this. I've thought of using ignite backup and restore but don't have matching tape types between the two. The other thought was using swlist to gather the installed packages and then going to the website to download and install on the test environment. Has anyone successfully done something like this? Pointers?

• pfSense command to delete stale SAD

  I'm experiencing an issue with pfSense where duplicate SAD's are getting created after rekeying, forcing me to manually go ahead and delete the old SAD's. It's not a huge issue but it does get to be a problem once I let it go for a few days. I just installed the cron package for pfSense so I could run a script to identify stale SAD's and delete them but I am not that familiar with BSD or pfSense. Is there a command that enumerates SAD's and their properties, and another that can delete by ID? I can form the conditional parts of the script but I do not know the commands to run. I would imagine it would be something like: Enumerate SAD's Identify Duplicate ones by matching Source and destination IP's Find the one with the larger bytes transferred Delete

• Cron Tips for not running cron jobs on holidays (the monday of a three day weekend)

  We have about a one hundred machine set-up with each machine running cron jobs like starting and stopping services and archiving these services' log files at the end of the day to a centralized repository. One headache we have is the three-day weekend (we're closed on holidays). We don't want the services starting up on those days and connecting to our business partner's machines. We currently do this by manually commenting out the most critical jobs and letting a bunch of errors happen all day. Not ideal. Basically if a job has '1-5' set in the day field we want this to mean 'work days' and not Monday to Friday'. We have a database that keeps track of which days are indeed 'work days' So, is it possible to override Cron's day-matching algorithm, or is there some other way to easily set a cron setting to avoid things starting up on a Monday holiday?   I have successfully configured and compiled php on my dev server, and works great, but after talking to a sysadmin buddy, he informed that custom compiles of the latest builds are not recommended for production (or even development) systems. He noted a situation where they custom configured and compiled PHP 5.3.6, only to find that there was some issue with a low-level Postgres driver, so they had to revert back to 5.3.3. So I am considering going back to yum to install PHP, however I have several custom configuration settings and was wondering if it's possible to pass or configure how PHP will be compiled through YUM? • connect 2.1 stereo speakers to LG LCD-TV (5500 series)

  I bought a pair of speakers for my dad's TV, LG 32LE5500. When I installed them, it just sounded worse than the integrated ones and that's where I realized the subwoofer didn't work at all and both speakers make lower volume than the internal ones. The audio output jack says "H/P" (standing for headphones, and a matching symbol) before buying I checked this output with my phone's headphones and it worked so I figured it would work with a set of speakers since it's a standard audio output. I guess it's literally for headphones and not any other kind of sound players. There is only one other audio output and it is the optical-digital, so I can't use that. Not at least with these speakers.. am I screwed? or is there any workaround?

• OSX: Selecting default application for all unknown and different file types (extensions)

  I work in cluster computing and am using Mac OS X 10.6. I send off hundreds of computing jobs a day, and each one comes back with with a different extension. For example, svmGeneSelect.o12345 which is the std output of my svmGeneSelect job which is job number 12345. I don't control the extensions. All files are plain text. I want OSX to open any file extension that it hasn't seen before with my favorite text editor when I click on it. Or even better set up file association defaults for extension patterns ie textEdit for extensions matching *.o*. I do NOT want to create file associations for individual files since this extension will only ever exist once, and I do not want to go through the process of selecting the application to use for each file. • grep pattern interpretted differently in 2 different systems with same grep version

  We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using "df | grep /dev/*da". This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 3507816 2137228 63% / /dev/sda5 67670876 9128796 55049152 15% /data /dev/sda1 101086 11976 83891 13% /boot However, for one machine, we get the following result from that command: Binary file /dev/sda matches It seems that its grepping files matching /dev/*da for an unknown pattern for some reason, only on this box that is seemingly identical in grep version, packages, kernel, and hardware. I switched the grep pattern to be "/dev/.da" and everything works as expected on this troublesome box, but I hate not knowing why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas? Or perhaps some other tests to try?

• LDAP search filter for Active Directory

  Hello, I'm trying to look for users inside Active Directory through a LDAP query. Basically I'm searching for the user in this way: Search DN: dc=mydomain, dc=com Filter: (sAMAccountName=USER) where USER is replaced with the provided username. Now if USER is only the username without domain (for ex. "Joe") this works fine. However I receive them in the form (domain\username, for ex. "myDomain\Joe") and obviously the search fails. I see two ways: using a regex inside the Search Filter to discard the domain using a completely different search filter I'm no LDAP expert and I don't even know if it's possible to use regular expressions inside the search filters. Does anyone know if it's possible and how? P.S. I cannot pre-process the username to strip the domain. This cannot be changed, as it's all part of a large system.

• Multiple domains, one config, hosted on apache2

  First a quick disclaimer, I'm not a 'server guy' or a 'unix pro' or anything like that, I'm a web programmer who got stuck doing server works since I ran linux (ubuntu) on my netbook. I'm trying to set up an apache server running on Debian to automagically serve multiple domains, each domain needs to have its own directory in /var/www. Since this is the last thing I do for this company I really need it to be easy for my successor (who is even more a beginner at servers than I am), to create more domains without having to muck around with ssh or /etc/apache2/sites-available, so what I'm looking for is basically any magic mumbo-jumbo in default (or apt-get, or conf.d) that makes the server start serving any domain that has a matching folder in /var/www they will ofcourse have to initiate domain transfers the usual way. I have no problem setting up domains individually. Ick... hope the above makes sense to someone.

• International Dvorak keyboard doesn't trigger hot-keys

  Hi, I just configured a Hebrew-Dvorak keyboard with Keyboard Layout Manager. What this means is that when I hold Shift+any key, the input is the capital English letter. It works just fine, however, hot-keys that involves the Ctrl key aren't being triggered when the input language is set to Hebrew (i.e Ctrl+L in FF which should set the focus on the URL bar) If however I hit the matching Qwerty key (input lang=Hebrew) I get the desirable result (i.e the URL bar get focused). The only thing I can think of is completely removing the US-Qwerty layout, but I don't know how this can be achieved, and besides, it may not solve the problem. Thanks, Almog.

  I'm trying to send some data from my web browser to a txt file on another computer. This works fine: echo 'Done' | nc -l -k -p 8080 | grep "GET" >> request_data.txt Now I want to do some further processing before writing the http request data to my txt file (involving regex maniuplation). But if I try to do something like this nothing is written to the file: echo 'Done' | nc -l -k -p 8080 | grep "GET" | grep "HTTP" >> request_data.txt (for simplicity of explanation I've used another grep instead of say awk) Why does the 2nd grep not get any data from the output of the first grep? I'm guessing piping with netcat works differently to what I've assumed to get this far. How do I perform a 2nd grep before writing to my txt file? My debugging so far suggests: It is nothing to do with stderr vs stdout Parentheses don't help

  I would like to allow to delete certain files in /tmp directory to sudo users. I have added the Allow_Cmnd /usr/sbin/userdel for sudo users but this does not delete all /tmp files associated with the user. So how shall I tweak the sudoers to allow them to delete certain files in /tmp directory only. I googled a bit but learned that regex may be be application at this. I tried couple of tweaks but its not working for me. I would like the users to have ability to execute command such as find /tmp -uid 10002 | grep joeuser | xargs rm -rf

• Extract cert and private key from JKS keystore to use it in Apache2 httpd

  I tried to find this but no luck. I created a JKS keystore and generated a CSR, then imported the signed cert and intermediate and root CA certs. Used this keystore on Tomcat without problems. Now I want to use the same cert for Apache2 http server on the same machine. I actually want to set up mod_jk to redirect /*.jsp and servlets paths to Tomcat and serve the static content and PHP from Apache2. I tried to convert JKS to PKCS12 with keytool to afterwards handle it with openssl with a command like this: keytool -importkeystore -srckeystore foo.jks \ -destkeystore foo.p12 \ -srcstoretype jks \ -deststoretype pkcs12 The problem is only the cert is exported but not the rest of the chain. I actually used this keystore on Apache and it complained about key and cert don't matching (not sure if it's related to the chain or not). Can anyone point me on the right direction? I am not a server guy and I am kinda lost with all this things :-(

• Hosting custom domains with IP address flexibility

  I am building a small service where users will be assigned a subdomain such as: myusername.myservice.com anotheruser.myservice.com I know that I can set up a wildcard vhost and using some configuration regex, serve the files like so: myusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/myusername anotherusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/anotherusername The problem is that I would like to allow users to alias their own domain names to their service. I understand that for the webserver, once the user adds the domain via my web interface, I can easily create a vhost for the domain in nginx and then refresh the webserver. The problem is that I would prefer to NOT let the users add an A record of my webserver's IP address as I would prefer to keep things flexible (when we upgrade our infrastructure to something more complex to scale). What is the best way to achieve this?

• How to calculate CIDR notation from entries in a routing table

  I have some entries in a routing table that were created using longest prefix matching, and I have to use those entries to determine the a.b.c.d/x notation (CIDR). This is an example entry: 11001000 00010111 00010. That was calculated from the range 11001000 00010111 00010000 00000000 through 11001000 00010111 00010111 11111111. I know the range is from IP addresses 200.23.16.0 to 200.23.23.255, but getting the /x for the subnet # doesn't make sense to me. Anyone know how to properly go about calculating it?

  I'm looking for a nice short easy way to create a series of thumbnails for any given video file. I'm almost there using ffmpeg, here's what I have: ffmpeg -i /tmp/video.avi -r 1 -ss 60 -r 1 foo-%03d.jpeg` The only problem is that this takes a shot every second and I'd like to make it every minute or so. I tried setting the -r value to 1/60 or .02 to no avail. • Ubuntu 10.04 not detecting multiple monitors

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card?   I installed Windows 7 in a 3 year old machine, it installed successfully, took all drivers and running great, but what happens is every 5-6 minutes it freezes for few seconds... 30 seconds to 1 minute and then comes back alive. I checked Event Viewer, nothing matching the frozen timeline. I would appriciate any help on how to detect causing service/hardware. After it comes alive, everything runs normal, I did run task manager and checked cpu usage, at time it freezes just before and after that no task took more cpu or memory, it was like idle machine. No external usb drives or no devices, on board intel desktop board with SATA HDD, SATA hdd running in absolute good mode.

  I want to write nginx rewrite rules for clean URLs. Everytime the user hits http://domain.com/abc/12/16/abc-def-ghi I need to execute domain.com/abc.php?a=12&b=16&c=abc-def-ghi. Now my regex is right as per rubular: ^\/abc\/(\d+)\/(\d+)\/(\w+\S+)$ http://rubular.com/regexes/11063 and rule is if (!-e $request_filename) { rewrite ^\/abc\/(\d+)\/(\d+)\/(\w+\S+)$ abc.php?a=$1&b=$2&c=$3 last; } But it is giving "No input File specified". I cant find what the problem is?
