• Reducing the pain writing integration and system tests

  I would like to make integration tests and system tests for my applications but producing good integration and system tests have often needed so much effort that I have not bothered. The few times I tried, I wrote custom, application-specific test harnesses, which felt like re-inventing the wheel each time. I wonder if this is the wrong approach. Is there a "standard" approach to integration and full system testing? EDIT: To clarify, it's automated tests, for desktop and web applications. Ideally a complete test suite that exercises the full functionality of the application.

• Update image in ASP.NET page from memory without refreshing the page.

  I have a command line C# server and an ASP.NET client, they both communicate via .NET Remoting. The server is sending the client still images grabbed from a webcam at say 2 frames a second. I can pass the images down to the client via a remote method call and the image ends up in this client method: public void Update(System.Drawing.Image currentFrame) { // I need to display the currentFrame on my page. } How do i display the image on the a page without saving the image to the hard disc? If it was a winForms app i could pass currentFrame to a picturebox ie. picturebox.Image = currentFrame. The above Update method gets fired at least 2 times a second. If the client was a winForms app i could simply put picturebox.Image = currentFrame and the current frame on the screen would automatically get updated. How do i achieve the same effect with ASP.NET? Will the whole page need to be reloaded etc?

It's all fairly standard stuff (including basic authentication) but there seem to be several ways to achieve this using Microsoft technologies and I don't really know where to start. • How to mark messages that are received by an java application using javax Mail Api?

  I want to create an application that gets all e-mails from an e-mail account using imap. When I first run the application I get all mails, than if I run it again I want to mark the messages that was read before so I can receive only new messages. I found that Message Object contains Flags(System Flags and User defined flags), but I can't manage to set one user defined flag. It is possible to mark the messages received by my application on the e-mail account, or I have to retain all message ids and every time when I get messages from imap I have to compare their id with retained ids and get only the messages that has different ids?

• Uninstalling demo/trial of Visual Studio 2008 Team System

  I wish to uninstall the trail copy of VS 2008 Team System, as the trial is coming to its end. I had VS 2008 Professional Edition installed on the machine to start with and it still shows up in Add/Remove Problems. I am hoping that when I uninstall VS 2008 Team System I will be left with a working VS 2008 Professional Edition. When I try to uninstall VS 2008 Team System, I very quickly get an error dialog that says: A problem has been encountered while loading the setup components. Canceling setup. Help! Progress or lack there of so fare I have done dir %temp%*.log in a command prompt and can see any log files that are recent I am going to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Installer#Diagnostic_logging to see if I can get any logging Aaron Stebner's WebLog has a post on where VS put's is log files, he also has a post on were some other products put there log files gives some info about where VS setup puts it's logs etc Aaron Ruckman provided me with the solution after I sent him the log files.

• Force NCover 1.5.8 to use v4 framework like testdriven.net does?

  I want to run coverage from the command line, but can't seem to get NCover 1.5.8 to instrument the code. It must be possible as when I run coverage tests with TestDriven.net it works. the difference seems to be that TD.NET is able to get NCover to use framework 4.0 (you get this in the log when it runs : MESSAGE: v4.0.30319) but from the command line I can't make it (I get this in the log : MESSAGE: v2.0.50727) So how can I make NCover play nice with nunit from the commandline, like it does with TD.NET?

• system() copy fails, while cmd copy works

  In cmd.exe, I can execute the command "copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt" and it worked fine. But in my C program, I ran this piece of code and got the following error: #include <iostream> using namespace std; int main() { system("copy c:\hello.txt c:\hello2.txt"); system("pause"); return 0; } Output: The system cannot find the file specified. I thought that when such code is run inside ASP.NET app, data will be cached to ...\ASPNET\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files but it is not and cache is never used. What I am doing wrong? How to force HttpWebRequest to use cache in ASP.NET environment?

• Is *not* using the asp.net membership provider a bad idea?

  Is it generally a really bad idea to not use the built-in asp.net membership provider? I've always rolled my own for my asp.net apps (public facing), and really have not had any problems in doing so. It works, and seems to avoid a layer of complexity. My needs are pretty basic: once setup, the user must use email address and password to login, if they forget it, it will be emailed back to them (a new one). After setup there is little that needs to be done to each user account, but I do need to store several extra fields with each user (full name, telephone and a few other fields etc). The number of users that required login credentials are small (usually just the administrator and a few backups), and everyone else uses the site unauthenticated. What are the big advantages that I might be missing out on by skipping the asp.net membership provider functionality?

• How to make one ASP.NET MVC site "derive" from another.

  My question is similar to "ASP.NET 2 projects to share same files", but with an ASP.NET MVC slant. Basically, we have two sites, one being based mostly on the other (roughly 90% views, controllers, images, in the second are identical to the first). However, in some cases, the views may be different, or a controller in the second site may be different to the first. Are there any simple ways of achieving this in ASP.NET MVC? So far, we've looked at using linked files to have two totally seperate projects where the second project shares the files it needs from the first. One problem with this approach is that most pages in the second project don't literally exist in the virtual directory, it makes debugging a pain - you have to publish in order to generate the files so you can debug. Does anyone have any better approaches, or ways this approach can be simplified?

• Mono is frequently used to say "Yes, .NET is cross-platform". How valid is that claim?

  In What would you choose for your project between .NET and Java at this point in time? I say that I would consider the "Will you always deploy to Windows?" the single most important (EDIT: technical) decision to make up front in a new web project, and if the answer is "no", I would recommend Java instead of .NET. A very common counter-argument is that "If we ever want to run on Linux/OS X/Whatever, we'll just run Mono", which is a very compelling argument on the surface, but I don't agree for several reasons. OpenJDK and all the vendor supplied JVM's have passed the official Sun TCK ensuring things work correctly. I am not aware of Mono passing a Microsoft TCK. Mono trails the .NET releases. What .NET-level is currently fully supported? Does all GUI elements (WinForms?) work correctly in Mono? Businesses may not want to depend on Open Source frameworks as the official plan B. I am aware that with the new governance of Java by Oracle, the future is unsafe, but e.g. IBM provides JDK's for many platforms, including Linux. They are just not open sourced. So, under which circumstances is Mono a valid business strategy for .NET-applications? Edit: Mark H summarized it as: "If the claim is that "I have a windows application written in .NET, it should run on mono", then not, it's not a valid claim - but Mono has made efforts to make porting such applications simpler.".

  My problem is a little confusing. I have 2 servers (Windows Server 2008 R2) with MSMQ installed and I want to use Server B to consume a MessageQueue on Server A. When I try to Receive it always throws a message error: "Access to message queuing system is denied.". IP between them. Server A: 172.31.23.130 Server B: 172.31.23.195 FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource (It's working for Sends) I can ping each server from the other; The firewall is disabled; The "queuesource" has Full Control to "Everyone", "Anonymous Logon", "Network", "Network Services"; Journal is disabled; Authentication is ok; The queue is Transactional. My code in .Net C# is basically like this: MessageQueue _sourceQueue = new MessageQueue(); _sourceQueue.Path = "FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource"; _sourceQueue.Receive(); // << here throw an exception. Actually I'm using the Private Queue only to avoid Active Directory's problems. For example, if the server DNS fail all network fail. I don't know what do anymore.

  Trying to get an MVC2 website to run on Apache 2.2 web server (running on Windows) that utilizes the mod_aspdotnet module. Have several ASP.NET Virtual Hosts running, trying to add another. MVC2 has NO default page (like the first version of MVC had e.g default.aspx). I have tried various changes to the config: commented out 'DirectoryIndex', changed it to '/'. Set 'ASPNET' to 'Virtual', will not load first page, always get: '403 Forbidden, You don't have permission to access / on this server.'   I use procmail to handle some serverside mail processing. I am trying to setup one email address on a server that support multiple domains (in the example below, domain.net and domain.com). I want mail sent to user@domain.net to go to bob and mail sent to [email protected] to go to sara. VERBOSE=off LOGFILE=/dev/null :0 * .domain.net bob :0 * .domain.com sara The above recipe seems to work quite well in that it catches incoming mail to domain.net and forwards it to bob. However, instead of forwarding mail to domain.com to sara, it creates a file in /home/user called sara. What am I doing wrong on this?

  When I open an iCal invitation (Mail Attachment.ics file) in Mac Mail.app sent to me from someone using Thunderbird, I receive the following error: The only solution that I've found to date is to save the Mail Attachment.ics file somewhere like the Desktop, open it in a text editor, and delete the blank lines at the beginning and end of the file. This problem appears to only happen when I'm receiving invitations from people using Thunderbird under Windows. Does anyone know of a better way to solve this problem? Is this a bug in Apple iCal, or is Thunderbird not meeting the iCal spec?   I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically.   When I try to send an e-mail using authenticationless relay via telnet, I receive an error message "553 sorry, that domain isn't allowed to be relayed thru this MTA (#5.7.1) rcpt to:[email protected]". How can I allow a specific domain to be whitelisted and allowed through the MTA?   I have issue with yahoo.co.uk if I send a mail from within the yahoo webconsole the mail arrives in my inbox on the exchange server If I send mail from Iphone configure to send via mail box configure with yahoo setting mail is dropped.
