  • Saving order of a List in JPA

    Hello, I have the following question about JPA: Can I save the order of the elements in a java.util.List? In my application the order in which I put elements in the Lists is important but after I get those collections from the database the order is not the same (as expected). Can you show me a way to deal with this problem? P.S. There is not a field in the entities that I put in the collections by which I can order them. Rosen

  • What are the Rails best practices for javascript templates in restful/resourceful controllers?

    First, 2 common (basic) approaches: # returning from some FoosController method respond_to do |format| # 1. render the javascript directly format.js { render :json => @foo.to_json } # 2. render the default template, say update.js.erb format.js { render } end # in update.js.erb $('#foo').html("<%= escape_javascript(render(@foo)) %>") These are obviously simple cases but I wanted to illustrate what I'm talking about. I believe that these are also the cases expected by the default responder in rails 3 (either the action-named default template or calling to_#{format} on the resource.) The Issues With 1, you have total flexibility on the view side with no worries about the template, but you have to manipulate the DOM directly via javascript. You lose access to helpers, partials, etc. With 2, you have partials and helpers at your disposal, but you're tied to the one template (by default at least). All your views that make JS calls to FoosController use the same template, which isn't exactly flexible. Three Other Approaches (none really satisfactory) 1.) Escape partials/helpers I need into javascript beforehand, then inserting them into the page after, using string replacement to tailor them to the results returned (subbing in name, id, etc). 2.) Put view logic in the templates. For example, looking for a particular DOM element and doing one thing if it exists, another if it does not. 3.) Put logic in the controller to render different templates. For example, in a polymorphic belongs to where update might be called for either comments/foo or posts/foo, rendering commnts/foos/update.js.erb versus posts/foos/update.js.erb. I've used all of these (and probably others I'm not thinking of). Often in the same app, which leads to confusing code. Are there best practices for this sort of thing? It seems like a common enough use-case that you'd want to call controllers via Ajax actions from different views and expect different things to happen (without having to do tedious things like escaping and string-replacing partials and helpers client side). Any thoughts?

  • Trying to Install Rails 3

    I'm trying to install Rails 3 on a brand new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.3, Ruby 1.8.7, and Rails 2.3.5 and I'm wondering if I've hosed myself. So far, I've run these commands: $ gem update --system $ gem install arel tzinfo builder memcache-client rack rack-test rack-mount erubis mail text-format thor bundler i18n $ gem install rails --pre However, when I run the last command, I get this error: ERROR: While executing gem ... (Gem::FilePermissionError) You don't have write permissions into the /usr/bin directory. I think it wants me to run the command with sudo so that it can write over /usr/bin/rails. But if I do that, won't I be overwriting my Rails 2.3.5 executable? I don't want to do that. Instead, I'd like to keep both versions of Rails. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi All, I'm having a bit of an issue wrapping my head around something. I'm currently using a hacked version of Gruff in order to accommodate "Scatter Plots". That said, the data is entered in the form of: g.data("Person1",[12,32,34,55,23],[323,43,23,43,22]) ...where the first item is the ENTITY, the second item is X-COORDs, and the third item is Y-COORDs. I currently have a recordset of items from a table with the columns: POINT, VALUE, TIMESTAMP. Due to the "complex" calculations involved I must grab everything using a single query or risk way too much DB activity. That said, I have a list of items for which I need to dynamically collect all data from the recordset into a hash (or array of arrays) for the creation of the data items. I was thinking something like the following: @h={} e = Events.find_by_sql(my_query) e.each do |event| @h["#{event.Point}"][x] = event.timestamp @h["#{event.Point}"][y] = event.value end Obviously that's not the correct syntax, but that's where my brain is going. Could someone clean this up for me or suggest a more appropriate mechanism by which to accomplish this? Basically the main goal is to keep data for each pointname grouped (but remember the recordset has them all). Much appreciated.   • Does anybody have any tips for managing polymorphic nested resources in Rails 3?

    in config/routes.rb: resources posts do resources comments end resources pictures do resources comments end I would like to allow for more things to be commented on as well. I'm currently using mongoid (mongomapper isn't as compatible with rails3 yet as I would like), and comments are an embedded resource (mongoid can't yet handle polymorphic relational resources), which means that I do need the parent resource in order to find the comment. Are there any elegant ways to handle some of the following problems: in my controller, I need to find the parent before finding the comment. if params[:post_id] parent = Post.find(params[:post_id] else if params[:picture_id] parent = Picture.find(params[:picture_id] end which is going to get messy if I start adding more things to be commentable also url_for([comment.parent,comment]) doesn't work, so I'm going to have to define something in my Comment model, but I think I'm also going to need to define an index route in the Comment model as well as potentially an edit and new route definition. There might be more issues that I have to deal with as I get further. I can't imagine I'm the first person to try and solve this problem, are there any solutions out there to make this more manageable?

    I am trying to create a self join table that represents a list of customers who can refer each other (perhaps to a product or a program). I am trying to limit my model to just one class, "Customer". However, I keep getting an empty array when accessing referrals: @customer.referrals ... returns []. I ran binding.pry to see what SQL was being run, given a customer who has a "referer" and should have several referrals. This is the SQL being executed.   • How to set Grub to automatically load Xen kernel

    How do you configure Grub to automatically use the Xen kernel under Ubuntu 11.10? No matter what I do, it loads the first menuentry. The only way I can get it to load Xen is to manually select the kernel, which I can't do if I have to reboot the server remotely, or there's a power failure and the machine automatically boots up when power's restored, etc. It's driving me nuts. In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the Xen kernel is at index 4 (i.e. it's the 5th menuentry). So I've tried: Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=4, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT=saved and GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true, and running sudo update-grub Setting GRUB_DEFAULT="Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Xen 4.1-amd64 and Linux 3.0.0-16-server", and running sudo update-grub None of these work. It continues to load the first menuentry, which is "Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-16-server". Below is my current /boot/grub/grub.cfg.     Here's my problem: I have a combo box that when its index changes I want a div tag with the id="services" to repopulate with checkboxes based on that comboboxes value.     I am trying to use the load method of FileReference object to load the data and use it to display a thumbnail of the selected image. However, after calling fr.load(), fr.data remains null. I'm using Flex Builder 3.0.2 on Windows 7 with Flex SDK 3.4 and Flash Player 10 Debug. If I evaluate fr.load() in Eclipse's watch variables list, I get an error reading "No such variable: load."     I need help refactoring this multi-loop thing. Here is what I have: Campaign has_many Contacts Campaign also has many templates for EVent (Email, Call, and Letter). I need a list of all the Emails, Calls and Letters that are "overdue" for every Contact that belongs to a Campaign. Overdue is determined by a from_today method which looks at the date the Contact was entered in the system and the number of days that needs to pass for any given Event. from_today() outputs the number of days from today that the Event should be done for a given Contact. Here is what I've done, it works for all Emails in a Campaign across all contacts. I was going to try to create another each do loop to change the class names.     Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I'm using 12.04 beta. Today I was prompted to install some updates, which I did, followed by a reboot. On reboot, X starts, but all I see is a single dialog window in the middle of the screen with the text: Failed to load session 'ubuntu' I don't even see the mouse, or the login screen, just this 1 line of text. When I hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to run dist-upgrade from a command prompt, I get this: The following packages have been kept back: libgnome-desktop-3-2 So to see why it was kept back, I tried the following: $ sudo apt-get install libgnome-desktop-3-2 ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libgnome-desktop-3-2 : Depends: gnome-desktop3-data (= 3.3.92-0ubuntu1) but 3.3.91-0ubuntu2 is to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.     I have Ubuntu 14.04 on a Medion Erazer with the Nvidia GTX570M card. At first, while I had not installed the last nvidia driver, each time I would try to suspend my pc it would freeze frame on the login. Once I managed to install the nvidia drivers, everything seemed to work up until I noticed that suddenly the system settings would not open anymore. I then rebooted my pc, but when I logged in I just end up with my cursor but no top panel or side pannel. Thankfully, I had installed the gnome desktops which works, except for the fact the system settings do not open also in the gnome desktop. I have tried following: Problems after upgrading to 14.04 (only background and pointer after login) except for reinstalling nvidia, since then I would be back at square one with suspend not working.     Two days ago,a colleague of mine tried to publish an asp.net website (which is built in VS2008 using framework 3.5) to our server,he configured everything in IIS (he made sure that the selected asp.net version is 2.0) and launched the website..at first it was working great but when he tried to click on a specific treeview...BOOM..: "Failed to load viewstate. The control tree into which viewstate is being loaded must match the control tree that was used to save viewstate during the previous request. For example, when adding controls dynamically, the controls added during a post-back must match the type and position of the controls added during the initial request." In that page there were these control: a TreeView and a Placeholder,when the user selects any node then it's controls will be created dynamically into that placeholder..for the first time it's working fine but when (s)he select another node then that issue appears. He called me to help him with this issue,for me this is the first time I see such an issue,scratch my head then I decided to eliminate the possibilities of this issue one by one,at the development machine it's working perfectly,he published the website at the local IIS and again..it's working perfectly,I took a copy of the website and published it into my laptop but no issues at all,so this is means that it's not an issue in the code. So there is something missing/wrong in our server [it has Windows Server 2003],we went to the server and checked on the web-config and the configurations on IIS...nothing wrong so far,so I decided to check if the framework 3.5 is installed or not and the answer: it wasn't installed Of course he assumed that it was installed and there was nothing to tell if it wasn't from the "ASP.Net version" in IIS because frameworks 3.0 and 3.5 will not be listed there [2.0 will be listed there instead],the only way to check if it was installed or not is to search for the framework in this path:[WINDOWS Folder]\Microsoft.NET\Framework or check if it was installed in Add or remove programs. The obvious solution for his case: We installed Framework 3.5 SP1 into our server,did a restart to the machine and it worked ! If anyone faced the same issue and solved it using the same solution or with a different one please post it here to share experience.

Thoughts? -- EDIT -- After playing with it a bit, I would think it has something to do with referencing the projects. I'm already referencing the TiledLib within my main windows project (TiledTest). However, this doesn't seem to make a difference. I can place the dll generated from the TiledLib project into the debug folder of TiledTest, and this causes it to generate a different error: Error loading "desert".   • Assembly load and execute issue

    I'm trying to develop Assembly code allowing me to load and execute(by input of the user) 2 other Assembly .EXE programs. I'm having two problems: -I don't seem to be able to assign the pathname to a valid register(Or maybe incorrect syntax) -I need to be able to execute the other program after the first one (could be either) started its execution.
