• How to Import a CSV file containing multiple sections into R?

  I want to import the contents of a csv file into R, the csv file contains multiple sections of data vertically, seperated by blank lines and asterisks. For example ******************************************************** * SAMPLE DATA ****************************************** ******************************************************** Name, DOB, Sex Rod, 1/1/1970, M Jane, 5/7/1980, F Freddy, 9.12,1965, M ******************************************************* * Income Data **************************************** ******************************************************* Name, Income Rod, 10000 Jane, 15000 Freddy, 7500 I would like to import this into R as two seperate dataframes. Currently I'm manually cutting the csv file up into smaller files, but I think I could do it using read.csv and the skip and nrows settings of read.csv, If I could work out where the secion breaks are. This gives me a logical TRUE for every blank line ifelse(readLines("DATA.csv")=="",TRUE,FALSE) I'm hoping someone has already solved this problem.

  Hi all, I got a Table which has two fields: Point, and Level, with some sample data as follows: ----------------------- Point | Level ----------------------- 10 | Level 1 20 | Level 2 30 | Level 3 40 | Level 4 Suppose that there is a user who has 25 points, to find the Level in which this user is in, the Select statement I used was: Select Level from Table where Point < 30 AND Point > 20; But the Select SQL ststament is a hard-copy one where you can see the ponts 30 and 20 are fixed. I want to alter the Select statement so that the new SQL Select statement can be applied to all users with different points, but I don't know how to do it.

• How to use Visual Studio debugger visualizers built against a different framework version?

  I compiled the ExpressionTreeVisualizer project found in the Visual Studio 2010 samples but when I try to use it in a .NET 3.5 project I get the exception below: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Visual Studio 2010\Common7\Packages\Debugger\Visualizers\ExpressionTreeVisualizer.dll' or one of its dependencies. This assembly is built by a runtime newer than the currently loaded runtime and cannot be loaded. The sample project had the TargetFrameworkVersion set to v4.0 and after changing it to v3.5 and building it now works in my project. I changed the source code and project file and rebuilt it so that I now have two expression tree visualizers, one for v3.5 projects and one for v4.0 projects. Is there a better way? Thanks!

• .NET Database Apps: Your Preferred Setup

  I'm struggling to settle into a pattern for developing typical database driven apps in C# and Visual Studio. There are so many ways to set them up, using drag/drop datasets and adapters or writing the queries manually in ADO.NET or Linq to SQL, Linq to Entities, to bind or not to data bind etc etc. Where to store the connection string, in app.config or in a method or both etc etc. So many tutorials and all of them are different. Everytime I write something I start hating the way it looks and works, so I scrap it and start over. It's getting a bit tedious. Maybe it's alittle of the OCD in me. Would any of you professional developers out there share your method of setting up and structuring your database logic and maybe some sample code? It's really how to go about organizing the code and the method(s) of interacting with SQL that I'm trying to get into a routine with, one that works and won't get me laughed at by someone reviewing it.

• simple div containing span won't size correctly

  I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about CSS but this simple problem baffles me. <div><span>sample text</span></div> results in the div's height being smaller than the height of the span if the span has padding. I realize that there are ways to use "float" to make the div size correctly, but floats always seem to introduce undesired side effects. Isn't there a clean simple way to tell the div to size to fit its contents? Seems pretty basic to me. Maybe I'm missing something.

• Java: using endpoint to publish webservice to tomcat server

  hi all, i am creating a simple SOAP web service. i am to ensure that it runs on a tomcat web service. im trying to implement this with JAX-WS (see code) my question is: does the Endpoint.publish use the tomcat server to host this or is it a mini glassfish kind of server? should i be extending UnicastRemoveObject or something similiar instead? ideally it would be able to be packaged into a .WAR and dropped in the directory and just work. It doesn't seem to work with my installed tomcat server as is because it says the port is already in use.   Hi, I am using a simple script on my PHP webpage to decode and output JSON as text. However, what ever I try I can't get it to wordwrap the output. $file = file_get_contents('sample.txt'); $out = (json_decode($file)); echo $out->mainText; How can I get this script to wordwrap at 600 characters without chopping words in half?   I am currently learning C by reading a good beginner's book called "Teach Yourself C in 21 Days" (I have already learned Java and C# so I am moving at a much faster pace). I was reading the chapter on pointers and the - (arrow) operator came up without explanation. I think that it is used to call members and functions (like the equivalent of the . (dot) operator, but for pointers instead of members). But I am not entirely sure. Could I please get an explanation and a code sample?

• Google groups not finding discussion thread but regular google search does?

  I'm having a problem with google groups and finding my own discussion threads. I go to the google group (in my case Android developer group) web view and try to search for my thread by entering the extact title of my thread. But it doesn't appear in the search results. On the other hand, when I search for the same title in the regular google web search, I get the thread right on top of the result list. I thought it might take a while until the groups index all new threads, but still after a few days, it still wouldn't show up. • Tools for code snippet execution

  By "code snippet execution", I mean the ability to write a few lines of code, run and test it without having to fire up an IDE and create a dummy project. It's incredibly useful for helping people with a small code sample without creating a project, compiling everything cleanly, sending them the code snippet and deleting the project. I'm not asking about the best code snippets or a snippet editor or where to store snippets! For C#, I use Snippet Compiler. For Java, I use Eclipse Scrapbook. For LINQ, I use LINQPad. Any suggestions for other (better?) tools? e.g. is there one for Java that doesn't involve firing up Eclipse? What about C?

[n] = ............ n arrays will each have a 2 element array, where each element has an array of n values. I used $list[$m][0][$n] and $list[$m][1][$n] inside 2 for loops where $m,$n vary from 0...2000 this crosses the allowed memory size.. i can change the size in php.ini, but i want to optimize my memory usage and not change the limit. will using objects help ? Please provide some sample code to understand. Thank you.

  Goal I'l like to get a list of unique FID's ordered by the the one which has most recently been changed. In this sample table it should return FIDs in the order of 150, 194, 122 Example Data ID FID changeDate ---------------------------------------------- 1 194 2010-04-01 2 122 2010-04-02 3 194 2010-04-03 4 150 2010-04-04 My Attempt I thought distinct and order by would do the trick. I initially tried: SELECT distinct `FID` FROM `tblHistory` WHERE 1 ORDER BY changeDate desc # Returns 150, 122, 194 using GROUP BY has the same result. I'm just barely a SQL amateur, and I'm a bit hung up. What seems to be happening is the aggregating functions find the first occurrence of each and then perform the sort. Is there a way I can get the result I want straight from mySQL or do I have to grab all the data and then sort it in the PHP?

• Open Source sound engine

  When I started using SoundEngine (from CrashLanding and TouchFighter), I had read about a few people recommending not to use it, for it was, according to them, not stable enough. Still it was the only solution I knew of to play sounds with pitch and position control without learning C++ and OpenAL, so I ignored the warnings and went on with it. But now I'm starting to worry. The 2.2 SDK introduced AVFoundation. Using both SoundEngine from CrashLanding (for sounds) and AVAudioPlayer (for music), I found out SoundEngine behaves strangely when the only existing AVAudioPlayer is released (all sounds stop until a new AVAudioPlayer is initiated). Around the same time as the 2.2 SDK came out, the CrashLanding sample code was mysteriously removed from the ADC site. I'm worried there are more bad surprises to come. My question is, is anyone aware of an Open Source alternative to SoundEngine? Maybe even a C++ library that uses OpenAL?

• How can I launch a missile?

  I am working on an open-source missile launcher application. I have added a big red button to a Form that says "Launch Missile". When I click the button, the event handler gets called. From the event handler I call a method named LaunchMissile(). So far so good, but how do you launch a missile from C# code? Will I have to write this code myself or is there an API or third party library for launching missiles? Please add sample code for various launch scenarios: orbit, moon, mars, etc.

  Hi. I have an issue with System.Threading.Timer. I am scheduling some actions using a time in a windows service. The timer starts executing the callback after a specified dueTime period. The windows service starts up after reboot automatically. However, I have observed a strange thing after a system reboot- the callback method starts executing itself 3 or 4 minutes before the specified period. What might be the reason for such behavior? • In native C++, how does one use a SqlCe .sdf database?

  Is there a simple way, without .NET? I've found some libraries but none for SqlCe 3.5. There is http://sqlcehelper.codeplex.com/ but it's far from done, since a major feature like using a password is not yet implemented. I've looked at the source and it uses OLEdb to handle the database. The offical Microsoft Northwind example (that is shipped with SQL Compact 3.1, but not with 3.5) also doesn't work, I've tried setting it up with no success. Actually I don't have a sample working code. Was anyone able to set it up paired with a passworded .sdf? What are the alternatives? Thanks.

  Hello All, I have the following piece of snippet Class Sample { Obj_Class1 o1; Obj_Class2 o2;}; But the size of Obj_Class1 and Obj_Class2 is huge so that the compiler shows a warning "Consider moving some space to heap". I was asked to replace Obj_Class1 o1 with Obj_Class1* o1 = new Obj_Class1(); But I feel that there is no use of making this change as heap allocation will also fail if stack allocation fails. Am I correct? Or does it make sense to make this change ( other than suppressing the compiler warning ).

  Hello, In an app we are calculating a SHA1Hmac in java using the following: SecretKey key = new SecretKeySpec(secret, "HmacSHA1"); Mac m = Mac.getInstance("HmacSHA1"); m.init(secret); byte[] hmac = m.doFinal(data); And later, the hmac is verified in C# - on a SmartCard - using: HMACSHA1 hmacSha = new HMACSHA1(secret); hmacSha.Initialize(); byte[] hmac = hmacSha.ComputeHash(data); However, the result is not the same. Did I overlook something important? The inputs seem to be the same. Here some sample inputs: Data: 546573746461746131323341fa3c35 Key: 6d795472616e73616374696f6e536563726574 Result Java: 37dbde318b5e88acbd846775e38b08fe4d15dac6 Result C#: dd626b0be6ae78b09352a0e39f4d0e30bb3f8eb9 I wouldn't mind to implement my own hmacsha1 on both platforms, but using what already exists....
