• How to reinstall Mac OS X on OS X/Linux dual-boot system?

  My setup: I have a MacBook Pro 5,5 with a Mac OS X Snow Leopard partition and a Linux partition. I use rEFIt to boot into Linux. I didn't use Boot Camp when I originally installed Linux; instead, I manually created the partition (with either Disk Utility in OS X or Gparted on a Linux live CD--I don't recall which one) and then installed Linux on it from a live CD. The problem: My OS X partition is corrupt, and I need to reinstall Snow Leopard. Since I installed rEFIt from within OS X, I'm concerned that wiping the OS X partition will prevent me from booting into my Linux partition. How can I do this without losing access to my Linux partition? Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the partition I reserved for it, or will it automatically overwrite the entire drive? And if I do the fresh OS X install and then install rEFIt again, will it automatically recognize my Linux partition? Thanks for any tips! Disk Utility wouldn't let me resize the partition or create a new one, and it doesn't see my Linux partition. It only displays the two partitions "Macintosh HD" and Linux Swap. In any case, it doesn't seem safe to do any reformatting with Disk Utility now, as I'm afraid it will wipe sda2 ("Macintosh HD") as well as sda4 (my Linux partition). So... I'm hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve wiping my entire hard disk. Would it be safe/possible to use Gparted to erase sda2 ("Macintosh HD") and then use the Snow Leopard DVD to install OS X onto [I]just[/I] sda2 without touching the other partitions? • How do I change OSX package install directory?

  It drives me nuts that every time I download a binary to run on OSX that it wants to install in system directories. ~/Applications is a perfectly fine place to install and doesn't require blindly authenticating somebody else's binary. Is there a way to change the install directory for packages? On a few I've been able to open the package and edit the plist to install it elsewhere, but that doesn't work universally. I install from source when I can, but it isn't always an option. Is there a good way to force the installer to use ~/Applications?

• What is the best keyboard for typing speed (not layouts)

  So I am a programmer, and I like playing typing speed games. My typing speed is, for common English words, 85 to 90 wpm, max 95. I type on various devices, my laptop, desktop, office pc.... they all have slightly different keyboards. Being a curious programmer, I wonder what types of keyboard is used for the highest possible typing speed. Or let me phrase it in another way, what is the type of keyboards that people use in typing speed contest? Here is something I know that I feel like I can share: It must be a wired keyboard, I can feel the lag as I am typing this on my wireless keyboard, even if it is a slightly more expensive model which claims to have zero lag. I know people prefer a mechanical keyboard, for the hepatic feedback, however I have not tried one. It lasts longer and is noisy, it also does not have the problem of normal keyboards where you press many keys at a time the signals will get all jammed and the computer will only receive one or two keys. I personally prefer those "thin profile" keyboards. I type a lot, and 95 wpm put me in the top 5%, this is of course just on a gaming site. However when I type on the fat keyboards, my fingers have to travel a much longer distance before the keys actually click. This is where I find myself typing much faster with those thin profile keyboards found on my laptop. Because my fingers only hover on the keys and I only need to press a short distance, each stroke takes less force and light rapid strokes is what makes me type fast. When I type on a fat keyboard, I was forced to use heavy strokes, and this slows me down. There must be some people out there who are keyboard scientists, who actually do experiments and user tests with different setups. It would be interesting to understand more about the things we use everyday for not just work but a majority of our communications. P.S. this is about hardware and not about switching keyboard layouts to dvorak

• Returning row values based on conditional formatting variables

  I'm not entirely sure how to properly explain this, but here we go... I'm trying to create a single budgeting document that allows me to manage purchasing and reconciliation for multiple projects. I would like to create separate sheets per project and have purchased items populate on a master sheet. Using conditional formatting, I've set one of the columns to display an item's status (waiting for approval, approved, ordered, received). I would like the contents of an entire row to populate in a new sheet table once the status is set to "Received." The sheet should update descendingly. I can't attach an image because I don't have a 10 reputation.. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Which linux distro for a laptop in windows environmet?

  I just got new laptop at work. What would you recommend as a linux distribution for it? All other developers are working under windows, and use windows tools. I'm currently using ArchLinux, but want to change it. I don't want to waste time configuring wireless, windows network shares, network pritners, projector, etc ... I want this stuff to just work, while still having sane and stable development evironment and tools. Is Ubuntu a good choice for this? I use gentoo at home, but don't think it is a good match for work environmet. EDIT: Note that we are working on cross platform apps, and deployment platform is almost always linux. There are very few windows apps that I have to use (like MS Project). It is just that everything else is windows centric. I use linux because I feel more productive with it, even if I have to dual boot to edit MS Project files.

  Hello, I run VirtualBox 3.1 on Ubuntu with a Win XP guest. I have noticed to my surprise that when I pause the VM (its screen grays out) VirtualBox continues using 15-20% of the host's CPU. Is this normal behavior? Is there a way to avoid it? (Without saving the state of the VM and exiting VirtualBox.) Thanks for any insights! ~lara

• Is there a blog tool with support for tagging posts, only displaying posts with certain combinations

  What I want: A blog. I can tag posts, e.g. "A" or "B" or "all," and then you can either 1) click to only view posts tagged "A" or "all" or 2) even more ideally, I can set it so you automatically see posts tagged "A" or "all" when you log in. LaTeX support--I can type in LaTeX in the editor and it will show the math properly. No anonymous anything--must sign up and be logged in to view and comment Not as important, but convenient: Admin controls, e.g. detailed statistics, see who posts or views what when, control who posts / views, etc. Hosting: Ideally, if there's some software I can install on "my" own server, that would be ideal. But if we can't host it, it'd still be good to find some free (or maybe even paid) service elsewhere that would host the blog if it provided those tools. Any thoughts? I have no experience with this. • TicTac Photo and Windows 7

  Hello, My wife has been creating a tictac photo album. I had to upgrade to windows 7 as i had enough of Vista so i backed up the tic tac photo file and the photos to an external hard disk and performed a fresh install of win7. Now here is the problem. TicTacPhoto says it can find the photos in the album. The locations were as follows: Vista: C:\Users\Kelly\Pictures Win 7 C:\Users\Kelly\My Pictures When i try to create a Pictures folder under Kelly it popups a message about merging the two folders and simply moves the pictures to the My Pictures folder. Does anyone know a way to make a foler called pictures so i can eliminate the file path problem and then try again with tic tac photo support to get them to fix my file. My wife is going to kill me as its our wedding album and she has spent upwards of 30hrs designing it and me upgrading to win 7 means its all my fault. She does not understand file paths etc. Im going to try and open the album file in a text editor and see if i can see anything but thought i would ask here as well. Any help appreciated.

I am at an actual lost, with no way into the router I cannot test settings. I have unplugged it, left it off for a 32 hours, and reset it with no luck. Any ideas? Could the router just be done-zo?

  I've got two network interfaces on an Ubuntu machine which go out to two different networks but both have internet gateways. I need to limit it so that any outgoing http requests it makes (ie through wget) only go through eth0 and all other traffic goes through eth1. I dare say the solution might have something to do with iptables but I've no experience with it so would appreciate all help.

  I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

• Inverted function keys (F1-F12) on HP Pavilion dv4t

  (I know there have already been a lot of questions about this, but none of them mentioned the dv4t specifically.) I'm thinking about getting an HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 or -5100, but something that's really irritating me is that by default the function keys (F1-F12) are "inverted"—without holding the Fn key, the function keys do things like change the brightness, change or mute the volume, and switch to an external display. Only if you hold Fn will they actually produce F1, F2, etc. This is not how keyboards are supposed to work. Is there any way to disable this "feature" that has been verified to work on the HP Pavilion dv4t-4200 or HP Pavilion dv4t-5100? I don't want to buy this computer unless this is possible.

• Windows 7 - Wireless Signal Good - Internet Often Says Limited or No Activity

  Hi - I have a New Dell Studio XPS latop that I hooked up in early January of 2010. The Dell Studio XPS laptop is connected to my wireless router (Belkin Wireless N). The router was purchased in Februaru of 2010 because I thought my router was bad (A D-Link router). Comcast is my ISP. Everyday, at random times, the internet will have a good signal (according to the little Win 7 icon on the taskbar) but I will receive a message saying limited or no internet access and I cannot access the internet. I have the internet setup to automatically get an IP and I did the IPCONFIG release / renew but with no success. I even had a WiFi enabled Blackberry right next to my computer and whenever the computer loses an WiFi connection, so does the Blackberry. The router isnt't bad, because the old router did the same thing - giving me limited or no internet access while working sometimes. I also tried using two other laptops in same physical position as my Dell Studio XPS laptop and they have the same problem. I am going crazy trying to figure this out as I have called the Router Company (Belkin), my ISP (Comcast), and my computer maker (Dell). Can anyone offer some suggestions and I can try them as we work through this and maybe one of the suggestion will be right one. Thanks in advance for even reading my problem. I searched for a problem similar to mine on the internet, but I have not been able to keep a steady internet connection. (Side note - I used to have an IBM thinkpad laptop and D - Link router and for years that wireless connection worked FLAWLESSLY, with the same physical set up - the laptop in my bedroom, and the router in the basement.)

• UNIX - mount: only root can do that

  I need to allow a non-root user to mount/unmount a device. I am a total noob when it comes to UNIX, so please dumb it down for me. I've been looking all over teh interwebz to find an answer and it seems everyone is giving the same one, which is to modify /etc/fstab to include that device with the 'user' option (or 'users', tried both). Cool, well I did that and it still says "mount: only root can do that". I'm pretty sure my fstab is set up OK, but everyone on the other posts seems to fail to mention how they actually call the 'mount' command once this entry is in the fstab file. I think this is where my problem may be. The command I use to mount the drive is: $ mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdcard. /bin/mount is owned by root and is in the root group and has 4755 permissions. /bin/umount is owned by root and is in the root group and has 4755 permissions. /mnt/sdcard is owned by me and is in one of my groups and has 0755 permissions. My mount command works fine if I use sudo, but I need to be able to do this without sudo (need to be able to do it from a PHP script using shell_exec). Any suggestions? Sorry for making you read so much...just trying to get as much info in the initial post as possible to preemptively answer questions about configuration stuff. If I missed anything tho, ask away. • I am trying to zip files individually, but the file type is unknown

  I am trying to zip some files with an unknown file type individually. I am using the following code in a batch script to do that: @ECHO OFF FOR %%A IN (bestbuy*nat*component.cpi*) DO "C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe" a -mx9 -m0=lzma2:d256m "%%~nA.7z" "%%A" The code will compress files individually ONLY if the file has an extension. Unfortunately the files that I have don't have any extension. In the code I am trying to zip files by doing a pattern match, the files are getting compressed into ONE file (which I do not want, I want each file compressed individually). Why does this code create separate zip files when the files have an extension (for example if I add .txt to the end of the files) and when there is no extension the code creates one zipped file. Can anyone please help me with the code to compress files with unknown file type so that each file gets compressed individually Your help would be greatly appreciated. Jason

• Image thumbnails flashes and then disappears in Windows Vista

  I have Windows Vista installed on my machine and I am facing this really annoying problem. Whenever I open a folder having images, image thumbnails appear for an instant and they are replaced by standard file icon. Argh...   We are using Cables Unlimited USB-2925 USB-to-Dual-DB9 serial cables, which use the Moschip MCS7720 controller. We have downloaded the newest driver from http://www.moschip.com/mcs7720.php, but that driver was last updated in 2005. It does not seem to be working with Macs running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Does anyone know of any updates for this driver, or are there any ways to get the driver to work with Snow Leopard?

• Root certificate authority works windows/linux but not mac osx - (malformed)

  I have created a self-signed root certificate authority which if I install onto windows, linux, or even using the certificate store in firefox (windows/linux/macosx) will work perfectly with my terminating proxy. I have installed it into the system keychain and I have set the certificate to always trust. Within the chrome browser details it says "The certificate that Chrome received during this connection attempt is not formatted correctly, so Chrome cannot use it to protect your information. Error type: Malformed certificate" I used this code to create the certificate: openssl genrsa -des3 -passout pass:***** -out private/server.key 4096 openssl req -batch -passin pass:***** -new -x509 -nodes -sha1 -days 3600 -key private/server.key -out server.crt -config ../openssl.cnf If the issue is NOT that it is malformed (because it works everywhere else) then what else could it be? Am I installing it incorrectly? To be clear: Within the windows/linux OS, all browsers work perfectly. Within mac only firefox works if it uses its internal certificate store and not the keychain. It's the keychain method of importing a certificate that causes the issue. Thus, all browsers using the keychain will not work. • Windows 7 Installation Folder: x86, x64 and another info

  I've downloaded a lot of Windows 7 versions (release candidates, trial, x64 and x86, etc). The bad part is that the downloaded iso files don't have clear names, so I cannot to know wich version is each file. I can check the files inside the iso using 7-Zip, by example. Then, reading the files and folders in the installation disk, how can I tell what Windows version and platform the installation refers to?
