  • I need to understand why my server turned off

    Our organization was robbed and definitely it was inside job. I was set up. I work as a manager and as system administrator in this organization and everything goes against me. The only clue I have is that someone accidentally or intentionally turned of a server that is in the office indicating that some one was inside at the time that no one should be. This is the only evidence I have that can justify me.  I looked the log files and they show that the Power button was pressed. Can you help me to find out that that was not a bug or systems overheat? I will post the log files and if you will ask more I will gladly provide the information.     Hello, As we all know that EJB's in 3.1 or 3.0 are simple POJOs. You just need to give annotations here and there and it gets converted to EJB from simple class. So, now my question is why should i use EJBs at all? Can i not do without them? In .Net i created class library and got things done. I never felt the need for anything like EJB. Simple classes were enough. Then, why in Java people stress on EJB? What is difference between a simple POJO and EJB in terms of execution and memory? Further which function should i write in EJB and which should i write in simple class? Should i dump every function in EJB only? or there is some kind of strategy? Does EJB provide anything special?

  • Why do software engineers hate writing documentation?

    I ask because I quite enjoy it! I'm talking about design documentation and implementation notes (NOT user manuals), which are non-existent in most of the codebases I've been handed. I can understand why a developer wouldn't want to write requirements (that's the analyst's job) or the user documentation (that's a technical writer's job) but I don't get why developers hate writing design docs. I don't think I would feel as if I'd finished the job if I only wrote the code and walked away -- mainly because when I've been introduced to code-only situations I've seen how hard it is to figure out what's been done and what the software does. I would hate for people to suffer the same situation when inheriting my code. What makes you loath writing supporting documentation for your code?

  • Why are the contents of my UITableViewCell disappearing?

    Hey everyone, I am learning about using the checkmark cell accessory and am wondering why the contents of my cell is disappearing when toggling it.   • Why does having a transitional doctype, cause my javascript to fail in WebKit and Opera Browsers

    Hi all I am trying to get a mouseover script to work, when there is no doctype set the script works fine in all browsers I test, but the site looks like a dogs breakfast However When i set the doctype to transitional (it has to be this doctype) Firefox and IE8 (&compat mode) work fine But Opera and the webkit browsers can only display the popup above the page fold, so if you scroll down the page and go over an image the popup appears above the visible page. And I can't figure out why, there are a couple of instances of document.all in the code, but my attempts to replace these have broken the code, besides the fact it works in Firefox and not Opera makes me think that document.all is not the issue Any help would be appreciated, even just telling me why a doctype would effect Javascript would be a help.   • Why is the W3C box model considered better?

    Why do most developers consider the W3C box-model to be better than the box-model used by Internet Explorer? I know it's very frustrating developing pages that look the way you want them on Internet Explorer, but I find the W3C box-model to be counter-intuitive. For example, if margins, padding, and border were factored into the width, I could assign fixed width values for all my columns without having to worry about how many columns I have and what changes I make to my padding and margins. Under W3C box model I have to worry about how many columns I have, and develop something akin to a mathematical formula to calculate my values. Changing them would nightmarish, especially for complex layouts. My novice opinion is that it's more restrictive. Consider this small frame-work I wrote: #content { margin:0 auto 30px auto; padding:0 30px 30px 30px; width:900px; } #content .column { float:left; margin:0 20px 20px 20px; } #content .first { margin-left:0; } #content .last { margin-right:0; } .width_1-4 { width:195px; } .width_1-3 { width:273px; } .width_1-2 { width:430px; } .width_3-4 { width:645px; } .width_1-1 { width:900px; } These values I have assigned here will falter unless there are three columns, and thus the margins at 0(first)+20+20+20+20+0(last). It would be a disaster if I wanted to add padding to my columns too, as my entire setup would have to be re calibrated. Now imagine if column width incorporated all the other elements, all I would need to do is change one associated value, and I have my layout. I'm less criticizing it and more hoping to understand why it's better, or why I'm finding it more difficult. Am I doing this whole thing wrong? I don't know very much about this topic, but it seems counter intuitive to use W3C's box-model. Some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

    compressed xps documents do not pass isxps.exe test and do not display in xpsviewer. i'm using Windows 7 and vs2010. (i've also installed latest 7zip program, but i do not think that it may corrupt the default windows zip capability......or not?)

    I was trying to create an attribute that implies [Serializable] but I noticed that this SerializableAttribute class is sealed. In Java it was possible to create an interface (say, MyInterface) that is inherited from Serializable interface and so all the subclasses of MyInterface would also be serializable, even its sub-sub classes would be so. Let's say I am creating an ORM and I want customers to annotate their entity classes as [DatabaseEntity] but in order to make sure that entities are serializable, I also need to ask them to attribute their classes with extra [Serializable] which does not look quite compact and neat. I am wondering why SerializableAttribute class is sealed and why has Inherited=false which implies that subclasses of serializable class will not be serializable unless it is explicitly stated. What motives are behind these design choices?

    I started to use CheckThreadViolationRepaintManager to detect EDT violations. It complains about: partner = getParameter("partner",generatePartnerSelectionPanel(),Design.partnerSelectionDuration); Because it does not like generatePartnerSelectionPanel() because it does not like JPanel panel = new JPanel(); in this method. But I cannot find out why there should be a problem around that. In more details, generatePartnerSelectionPanel() generates a JPanel (I do it not in the EDT) but then, in the getParameter I add the JPanel to the main JFrame and I do it in the EDT (using invokeLater). So, why there should be a problem?

Why is only every second listener called? The event firing is implemented exactly this way in javax.swing.tree.DefaultTreeModel among others, so it's obviously me who's just not getting something.
