  • 3rd party data - Store in Data Warehouse or Primary database?

    - by brydgesk
This is mostly a data warehouse philosophy question. My project involves an Oracle forms application, and a Teradata Data Warehouse for reporting and ad-hoc purposes. In addition to the primary data created by the users of our application, we also require data from various other sources. Currently, this 3rd party data comes via FTPd flat files directly to our Data Warehouse. To access the data, our users must use a series of custom BusinessObjects reports. My question is, would it make more sense for this data to be sent to our source Oracle system instead? Is it ever appropriate for a Data Warehouse to be the point of origin for users to access raw data? In short, is it more important that the operational database contain only the data created by your project, or that the data warehouse remain dedicated solely to reporting and analysis?

  • How to read in text from the visual studio debug output window

    - by Jeremy Bell
I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window. The documentation seems to imply that it is possible, but it doesn't provide an example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb166236(VS.80).aspx Quote: In addition, the OutputWindow and OutputWindowPane objects add some higher-level functionality to make it easier to enumerate the Output window panes and to retrieve text from the panes. Preferably I'd like to be able to subscribe to an event that fires when a new line of text arrives, similar to a StreamReader's asynchronous reads.

Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '((ProductID = ?) AND ((? = 1 AND Product Name IS NULL) OR (Product Name = ?)) AND ((? = 1 AND Price IS NULL) OR (Price = ?)) • Wrap text around an image in rails and prawn

    - by stevenheidel
I have a document with dynamic image and dynamic text and would like the text around the image. The image is right aligned on the landscape page. Here is what I have so far: pdf.bounding_box([0,pdf.bounds.top - 50], :width => pdf.bounds.width, :height => pdf.bounds.height-50) do pdf.text @article.title, :size => 30, :style => :bold pdf.text @article.content, :align => :left # image pdf.bounding_box([pdf.bounds.right - 250, pdf.bounds.top], :width => 250, :height => 250) do pdf.image image_path, :width => 250 end end The text goes right underneath the image. I tried doing this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2085151/ruby-prawn-how-to-wrap-text-around-an-aligned-right-image but it didn't work. Help is appreciated, thanks.

  • Keeping an enum and a table in sync

    - by MPelletier
I'm making a program that will post data to a database, and I've run into a pattern that I'm sure is familiar: A short table of most-likely (very strongly likely) fixed values that serve as an enum. So suppose the following table called Status: Status Id Description -------------- 0 Unprocessed 1 Pending 2 Processed 3 Error In my program I need to determine a status Id for another table, or possibly update a record with a new status Id. I could hardcode the status Id's in an enum and hope no one ever changes the database. Or I could pre-fetch the values based on the description (thus hardcoding that instead). What would be the correct approach to keep these two, enum and table, synced?

  • Concatenating text in an ASP.NET localized label

    - by James B
Trying to localize text in ASP.NET labels... want to add a ':' after the localized text. I could just add the ':' to the localized text in the resource file, but that seems silly... there should be an easy way to do this. <asp:Label id="RoleTypeLabel" runat="server" Text='<%$ Resources: GS3, RoleTypeLabel %>:' AssociatedControlID="RoleTypeDropDown"></asp:Label> (note the ':' at the end of Text='...') Of course, this doesn't work... and neither does anything I can think of to concatenate a ':' onto the end of the localized text. Anyone know how to do it? TIA, James

  • How do I close a database connection in a WCF service?

    - by Dan
I have been unable to find any documentation on properly closing database connections in WCF service operations. I have a service that returns a streamed response through the following method. public virtual Message GetData() { string sqlString = BuildSqlString(); SqlConnection conn = Utils.GetConnection(); SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sqlString, conn); XmlReader xr = cmd.ExecuteXmlReader(); Message msg = Message.CreateMessage( OperationContext.Current.IncomingMessageVersion, GetResponseAction(), xr); return msg; } I cannot close the connection within the method or the streaming of the response message will be terminated. Since control returns to the WCF system after the completion of that method, I don't know how I can close that connection afterwards. Any suggestions or pointers to additional documentation would be appreciated. Dan

  • Securing data inside Azure SQL? Any good libraries or DIY?

    - by Sid
Azure SQL doesn't support many of the encryption features found in SQL Server (Table and Column encryption). We need to store some sensitive information that needs to be encrypted and we've rolled our own using AesCryptoServiceProvider to encrypt/decrypt data to/from the database. This solves the immediate issue (no cleartext in db) but poses other problems like Key rotation (we have to roll our own code for this, walking through the db converting old cipher text into new cipher text) metadata mapping of which tables and which columns are encrypted. This is simple with it's a few but quickly gets out of hand ... So are there any libraries out there that do this well? Any other resources or design patterns I can be pointed to?

  • A WPF Image/Text Button

    - by psheriff
Some of our customers are asking us to give them a Windows 8 look and feel for their applications. This includes things like buttons, tiles, application bars, and other features. In this blog post I will describe how to create a button that looks similar to those you will find in a Windows 8 application bar. In Figure 1 you can see two different kinds of buttons. In the top row is a WPF button where the content of the button includes a Border, an Image and a TextBlock. In the bottom row are four...(read more)

  • Problem connecting to postgres with Kohana 3 database module on OS X Snow Leopard

    - by Bart Gottschalk
Environment: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard PHP 5.3 Kohana 3.0.4 When I try to configure and use a connection to a postgresql database on localhost I get the following error: ErrorException [ Warning ]: mysql_connect(): [2002] No such file or directory (trying to connect via unix:///var/mysql/mysql.sock) Here is the configuration of the database in /modules/database/config/database.php (note the third instance named 'pgsqltest') return array ( 'default' => array ( 'type' => 'mysql', 'connection' => array( /** * The following options are available for MySQL: * * string hostname * string username * string password * boolean persistent * string database * * Ports and sockets may be appended to the hostname. */ 'hostname' => 'localhost', 'username' => FALSE, 'password' => FALSE, 'persistent' => FALSE, 'database' => 'kohana', ), 'table_prefix' => '', 'charset' => 'utf8', 'caching' => FALSE, 'profiling' => TRUE, ), 'alternate' => array( 'type' => 'pdo', 'connection' => array( /** * The following options are available for PDO: * * string dsn * string username * string password * boolean persistent * string identifier */ 'dsn' => 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=kohana', 'username' => 'root', 'password' => 'r00tdb', 'persistent' => FALSE, ), 'table_prefix' => '', 'charset' => 'utf8', 'caching' => FALSE, 'profiling' => TRUE, ), 'pgsqltest' => array( 'type' => 'pdo', 'connection' => array( /** * The following options are available for PDO: * * string dsn * string username * string password * boolean persistent * string identifier */ 'dsn' => 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=pgsqltest', 'username' => 'postgres', 'password' => 'dev1234', 'persistent' => FALSE, ), 'table_prefix' => '', 'charset' => 'utf8', 'caching' => FALSE, 'profiling' => TRUE, ), ); And here is the code to create the database instance, create a query and execute the query: $pgsqltest_db = Database::instance('pgsqltest'); $query = DB::query(Database::SELECT, 'SELECT * FROM test')->execute(); I'm continuing to research a solution for this error but thought I'd ask to see if someone else has already found a solution. Any ideas are welcome. One other note is that I know my build of PHP can access this postgresql db since I'm able to manage the db using phpPgAdmin. But I have yet to determine what phpPgAdmin is doing differently to connect to the db than what Kohana 3 is attempting. Bart

  • WinForm Text Control that displays current character/character limit

    - by Refracted Paladin
I need a way to display, like you see in some web apps, the current characters/character limit for a Text Control(i.e. 3/500). I usually see this as a label residing directly above or below the Text Control. How is this 'normally' accomplished? Should I override my Text Control somehow? Do I just manually add labels by every Text Control and 'bind' them to properties of the Text Control? Do I need to create a composite control that has the Text Control & Label Controls together to accomplish what I need? Any direction or help will be greatly appreciated.

  • No SQLCompact Edition Support IN VS 2013

    - by James Izzard
Firstly apologies if this is a poor question - I am an engineer not a programmer. I have spent time moving from Visual Basic to C#. I have started C#/SQL tutorials. I have noticed VS 2013 has stopped supporting the compact edition database normally used for standalone desktop apps. Somebody has kindly written a plugin to re-implement support. I have also noticed a belief circulating that SQLite is to replace the compact edition. Would anybody be able to advise if this was accurate - I am slightly confused as to which database is best suited for desktop app development inside VS 2013. Any comment greatly appreciated. Cheers James

  • What is an Ontology (Database?) ?

    - by Robert Gould
I was just reading this article and it mentions that some organization had an Ontology as(?) their database(?) layer, and that the decision to do this was bad. Problem is I hadn't heard about this before, so I can't understand why it's bad. So I tried googling about databases and ontology, and came about quite a few pdfs from 2006 that we're full of incomprehensible content (for my mind). I read a few of these and at this point still have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. My current impression is that it was some crazy fad of 2006 that some academics were trying to sell us, but failed miserably due to the wording of their ideas. But I'm still curious if anyone actually knows what this is actually all about.

You'd have thought that nothing would be easier than using SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for searching through the DDL for both the names and definitions of the structural metadata of your databases, for the occurrence of a particular string of letters. Not so easy, it turns out, though Phil Factor is able to come up with various methods for various purposes.

  • CSS strikethrough different color from text?

    - by gojomo
The HTML elements del or strike, and the CSS text-decoration property with a value line-through, may all be used for a text strike-through effect. Examples: <del>del</del> ...gives: del <strike>strike</strike> ....gives: strike <span style='text-decoration:line-through'> text-decoration:line-through </span> ...will also look the same as: text-decoration:line-through However, the strikethrough line is typically the same color as the text. Can CSS be used to make the line a different color?
