  • Storing float numbers as strings in android database

    - by sandis
    So I have an app where I put arbitrary strings in a database and later extract them like this: Cursor DBresult = myDatabase.query(false, Constant.DATABASE_NOTES_TABLE_NAME, new String[] {"myStuff"}, where, null, null, null, null, null); DBresult.getString(0); This works fine in all cases except for when the string looks like a float number, for example "221.123123123". After saving it to the database I can extract the database to my computer and look inside it with a DB-viewer, and the saved number is correct. However, when using cursor.getString() the string "221.123" is returned. I cant for the life of me understand how I can prevent this. I guess I could do a cursor.getDouble() on every single string to see if this gives a better result, but that feels sooo ugly and inefficient. Any suggestions? Cheers, edit: I just made a small test program. This program prints "result: 123.123", when I would like it to print "result: 123.123123123" SQLiteDatabase database = openOrCreateDatabase("databas", Context.MODE_PRIVATE, null); database.execSQL("create table if not exists tabell (nyckel string primary key);"); ContentValues value = new ContentValues(); value.put("nyckel", "123.123123123"); database.insert("tabell", null, value); Cursor result = database.query("tabell", new String[]{"nyckel"}, null, null, null, null, null); result.moveToFirst(); Log.d("TAG","result: " + result.getString(0));

  • Writing a VM - well formed bytecode?

    - by David Titarenco
Hi, I'm writing a virtual machine in C just for fun. Lame, I know, but luckily I'm on SO so hopefully no one will make fun :) I wrote a really quick'n'dirty VM that reads lines of (my own) ASM and does stuff. Right now, I only have 3 instructions: add, jmp, end. All is well and it's actually pretty cool being able to feed lines (doing it something like write_line(&prog[1], "jmp", regA, regB, 0); and then running the program: while (machine.code_pointer <= BOUNDS && DONE != true) { run_line(&prog[machine.cp]); } I'm using an opcode lookup table (which may not be efficient but it's elegant) in C and everything seems to be working OK. My question is more of a "best practices" question but I do think there's a correct answer to it. I'm making the VM able to read binary files (storing bytes in unsigned char[]) and execute bytecode. My question is: is it the VM's job to make sure the bytecode is well formed or is it just the compiler's job to make sure the binary file it spits out is well formed? I only ask this because what would happen if someone would edit a binary file and screw stuff up (delete arbitrary parts of it, etc). Clearly, the program would be buggy and probably not functional. Is this even the VM's problem? I'm sure that people much smarter than me have figured out solutions to these problems, I'm just curious what they are!

  • Return call from ggplot object

    - by aL3xa
I've been using ggplot2 for a while now, and I can't find a way to get formula from ggplot object. Though I can get basic info with summary(<ggplot_object>), in order to get complete formula, usually I was combing up and down through .Rhistory file. And this becomes frustrating when you experiment with new graphs, especially when code gets a bit lengthy... so searching through history file isn't quite convenient way of doing this... Is there a more efficient way of doing this? Just an illustration: p <- qplot(data = mtcars, x = factor(cyl), geom = "bar", fill = factor(cyl)) + scale_fill_manual(name = "Cylinders", value = c("firebrick3", "gold2", "chartreuse3")) + stat_bin(aes(label = ..count..), vjust = -0.2, geom = "text", position = "identity") + xlab("# of cylinders") + ylab("Frequency") + opts(title = "Barplot: # of cylinders") I can get some basic info with summary: > summary(p) data: mpg, cyl, disp, hp, drat, wt, qsec, vs, am, gear, carb [32x11] mapping: fill = factor(cyl), x = factor(cyl) scales: fill faceting: facet_grid(. ~ ., FALSE) ----------------------------------- geom_bar: stat_bin: position_stack: (width = NULL, height = NULL) mapping: label = ..count.. geom_text: vjust = -0.2 stat_bin: width = 0.9, drop = TRUE, right = TRUE position_identity: (width = NULL, height = NULL) But I want to get code I typed in to get the graph. I reckon that I'm missing something essential here... it's seems impossible that there's no way to get call from ggplot object!

  • What changes in Core Data after a save?

    - by Splash6
I have a Core Data based mac application that is working perfectly well until I save a file. When I save a file it seems like something changes in core data because my original fetch request no longer fetches anything. This is the fetch request that works before saving but returns an empty array after saving. NSEntityDescription *outputCellEntityDescription = [NSEntityDescription entityForName:@"OutputCell" inManagedObjectContext:[[self document] managedObjectContext]]; NSFetchRequest *outputCellRequest = [[[NSFetchRequest alloc] init] autorelease]; [outputCellRequest setEntity:outputCellEntityDescription]; NSPredicate *outputCellPredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"(cellTitle = %@)", outputCellTitle]; [outputCellRequest setPredicate:outputCellPredicate]; NSError *outputCellError = nil; NSArray *outputCellArray = [[[self document] managedObjectContext] executeFetchRequest:outputCellRequest error:&outputCellError]; I have checked with [[[self document] managedObjectContext] registeredObjects] to see that the object still exists after the save and nothing seems to have changed and the object still exists. It is probably something fairly basic but does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? If not can anyone give me any pointers to what might be different in the Core Data model after a save so I might have some clues why the fetch request stops working after saving?

  • Interpreting java.lang.NoSuchMethodError message

    - by Doog
    I get the following runtime error message (along with the first line of the stack trace, which points to line 94). I'm trying to figure out why it says no such method exists. java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.sun.tools.doclets.formats.html.SubWriterHolderWriter.printDocLinkForMenu( ILcom/sun/javadoc/ClassDoc;Lcom/sun/javadoc/MemberDoc; Ljava/lang/String;Z)Ljava/lang/String; at com.sun.tools.doclets.formats.html.AbstractExecutableMemberWriter.writeSummaryLink( AbstractExecutableMemberWriter.java:94) Line 94 of writeSummaryLink is shown below. QUESTIONS What does "ILcom" or "Z" mean? Why there are four types in parentheses (ILcom/sun/javadoc/ClassDoc;Lcom/sun/javadoc/MemberDoc;Ljava/lang/String;Z) and one after the parentheses Ljava/lang/String; when the method printDocLinkForMenu clearly has five parameters? CODE DETAIL The writeSummaryLink method is: protected void writeSummaryLink(int context, ClassDoc cd, ProgramElementDoc member) { ExecutableMemberDoc emd = (ExecutableMemberDoc)member; String name = emd.name(); writer.strong(); writer.printDocLinkForMenu(context, cd, (MemberDoc) emd, name, false); // 94 writer.strongEnd(); writer.displayLength = name.length(); writeParameters(emd, false); } Here's the method line 94 is calling: public void printDocLinkForMenu(int context, ClassDoc classDoc, MemberDoc doc, String label, boolean strong) { String docLink = getDocLink(context, classDoc, doc, label, strong); print(deleteParameterAnchors(docLink)); }

  • Beginner problem / error with ansi-c and gcc under ubuntu.

    - by Framester
Hi, I am just starting programming ansi c with gcc under ubuntu (9.04). I get following error messages: error messages: main.c:6: error: expected identifier or ‘(’ before ‘/’ token In file included from /usr/include/stdio.h:75, from main.c:9: /usr/include/libio.h:332: error: expected specifier-qualifier-list before ‘size_t’ /usr/include/libio.h:364: error: expected declaration specifiers or ‘...’ before ‘size_t’ /usr/include/libio.h:373: error: expected declaration specifiers or ‘...’ before ‘size_t’ /usr/include/libio.h:493: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘_IO_sgetn’ In file included from main.c:9: /usr/include/stdio.h:314: error: expected declaration specifiers or ‘...’ before ‘size_t’ /usr/include/stdio.h:682: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘fread’ /usr/include/stdio.h:688: error: expected ‘=’, ‘,’, ‘;’, ‘asm’ or ‘__attribute__’ before ‘fwrite’ main.c:12: error: expected identifier or ‘(’ before ‘/’ token I assume it is a very simple problem, maybe in the configuration of ubuntu or gcc. I am new to programming under linux as well. I googled for help and went through a tutorial but could not find an answer. • Free solution for automatic updates with .NET/C#?

    - by a2h
Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past few hours I have looked into: http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use http://wyday.com/wyupdate/ - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. Maybe if I was under a company paying me I could spend the time, but then I may as well pay for wyBuild. http://www.kineticjump.com/update/default.aspx - Ditto. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. Publishing is a pain; manual FTP and replace of all files is required for servers without FrontPage Extensions. I'm pretty much ready to throw in the towel right now and strangle myself. And then I think about Sparkle...

  • Rackspace Cloud rewrite jpg causes Session reset

    - by willoller
This may be the .Net version of this question. I have an image script with the following: ... Response.WriteFile(filename); Response.End(); I am rewriting .jpg files using the following rewrite rule in web.config: <rule name="Image Redirect" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="^product-images/(.*).jpg" /> <conditions> <add input="{REQUEST_URI}" pattern="\.(jp?g|JP?G)$" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" redirectType="SeeOther" url="/product-images/ProductImage.aspx?path=product-images/{tolower:{R:1}}.jpg" /> </rule> It basically just rewrites the image path into a query parameter. The problem is that (intermittently of course) Mosso returns a new Asp Session cookie which breaks the whole world. Directly accessing a static .jpg file does not cause this problem. Directly accessing the image script does not cause it either. Only rewriting a .jpg file to the .aspx script causes the Session loss. Things I have tried (From the Rackspace doc How can I bypass the cache?) I added Private cacheability to the image script itself: Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Private); I tried adding these cache-disabling nodes to web.config: <staticContent> <clientCache cacheControlMode="DisableCache" /> </staticContent> and <httpProtocol> <customHeaders> <add name="Cache-Control private" value="Cache-Control private" </customHeaders> </httpProtocol> The Solution I need The browser cache cannot be disabled. This means potential solutions involving Cache.SetNoStore() or HttpCacheability.NoCache will not work.

  • How to pass dynamic values using MVC AJax.BeginForm

    - by Arthur
I'm using MVC and AJax.BeginForm to do some ajax updating of my page. The BeginForm code looks something like: using (Ajax.BeginForm("HandleCrop", "Card", new { accept = true, id = Model.ImageUpload.ID, file = Model.ImageUpload.File, imageCropX = Model.CropInfo.X, imageCropY = Model.CropInfo.Y, imageCropWidth = Model.CropInfo.Width, imageCropHeight = Model.CropInfo.Height }, new AjaxOptions { HttpMethod = "POST", OnComplete = "ConfirmCompleted", OnSuccess = "ReloadUpload", OnFailure = "Failure" }, null)) The Model.CropInfo is being put in as hidden fields like so: <%=Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CropInfo.X) %> <%=Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CropInfo.Y) %> <%=Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CropInfo.Width) %> <%=Html.HiddenFor(m => m.CropInfo.Height) %> However, these values are being dynamically modified by some client side javascript, and these values need to be posted through the Ajax call back to the server. The above code will obviously not work as the imageCrop.. parameters in the Ajax form are being filled when the page is rendered (therefore being all 0). My question is: what is the correct way to approach this situation?

  • Can this code cause a "500" internal server error ?

    - by Scott B
A few of my customers are reporting that they are getting "500" Internal Server errors lately. I believe it might be caused by various plugins they are using but each time, the hosting company (multiple hosts) are saying that the htaccess file had to be replaced to fix the issue. I'm submitting the code below from my custom theme because its the only place where I trigger an htaccess write. And I want to be sure that there are no problems here that could cause an issue that might contribute to the 500 errors... if (file_exists(ABSPATH.'/wp-admin/includes/taxonomy.php')) { require_once(ABSPATH.'/wp-admin/includes/taxonomy.php'); if(get_option('permalink_structure') !== "/%postname%/" || get_option('mycustomtheme_permalinks') !=="/%postname%/") { $mycustomtheme_permalinks = get_option('mycustomtheme_permalinks'); require_once(ABSPATH . • Android map performance with > 800 overlays of KML data

    - by span
I have some a shape file which I have converted to a KML file that I wish to read coordinates from and then draw paths between the coordinates on a MapView. With the help of this great post: How to draw a path on a map using kml file? I have been able to read the the KML into an ArrayList of "Placemarks". This great blog post then showed how to take a list of GeoPoints and draw a path: http://djsolid.net/blog/android---draw-a-path-array-of-points-in-mapview The example in the above post only draws one path between some points however and since I have many more paths than that I am running into some performance problems. I'm currently adding a new RouteOverlay for each of the separate paths. This results in me having over 800 overlays when they have all been added. This has a performance hit and I would love some input on what I can do to improve it. Here are some options I have considered: Try to add all the points to a List which then can be passed into a class that will extend Overlay. In that new class perhaps it would be possible to add and draw the paths in a single Overlay layer? I'm not sure on how to implement this though since the paths are not always intersecting and they have different start and end points. At the moment I'm adding each path which has several points to it's own list and then I add that to an Overlay. That results in over 700 overlays... Simplify the KML or SHP. Instead of having over 700 different paths, perhaps there is someway to merge them into perhaps 100 paths or less? Since alot of paths are intersected at some point it should be possible to modify the original SHP file so that it merges all intersections. Since I have never worked with these kinds of files before I have not been able to find a way to do this in GQIS. If someone knows how to do this I would love for some input on that. Here is a link to the group of shape files if you are interested: http://danielkvist.net/cprg_bef_cbana_polyline.shp http://danielkvist.net/cprg_bef_cbana_polyline.shx http://danielkvist.net/cprg_bef_cbana_polyline.dbf http://danielkvist.net/cprg_bef_cbana_polyline.prj Anyway, here is the code I'm using to add the Overlays. • How to debug problems in Linux kernel module `init()`?

    - by Kimvais
I am using remote (k)gdb to debug a problem in a module that causes a panic when loaded e.g. when init() is called. The stack trace just shows that do_one_initcall(mod->init) causes the crash. In order to get the symbol file loaded in the gdb, I need to get the address of the module text section, and to get that I need to get the module loaded. Because the insmod in busybox (1.16.1) doesn't support -m so I'm stuck to grep modulename /proc/modules + adding the offset from nm to figure out the address. So I'm facing a sort a of a chicken and an egg problem here - to be able to debug the module loading, I need to get the module loaded - but in order to get the module loaded, I need to debug the problem... So I am currently thinking about two options - is there a way to get the address information either: by printk() in the module init code by printk() somewhere in the kernel code all this prior to calling the mod->init() - so I could place a breakpoint there, load the symbol file, hit c and see it crash and burn...

  • search form in php via ajax

  • Problem with for-loop in python

  • How to use Nhibernate Validator + NHib component + ddl

    - by mynkow
I just configured my NHibValidator. My NHibernate creates the DB schema. When I set MaxLenght="20" to some property of a class then in the database the length appears in the database column. I am doing this in the NHibValidator xml file. But the problem is that I have components and cannot figure out how to achieve this behaviour. The component is configured correctly in the Customer.hbm.xml file. EDIT: Well, I found that Hibernate Validator users had the same problem two years ago. http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HV-25 Is this an issue for NHibernate Validator or it is fixed. If it is working tell me how please. ----------------------------------------------------- public class Customer { public virtual string Name{get;set;} public virtual Contact Contacts{ get; } } ----------------------------------------------------- public class Contact { public virtual string Address{get;set;} } ----------------------------------------------------- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <nhv-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-validator-1.0" namespace="MyNamespace" assembly="MyAssembly"> <class name="Customer"> <property name="Name"> <length max="20"/> </property> <property name="Contacts"> <notNull/> <valid/> </property> </class> </nhv-mapping> ----------------------------------------------------- <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <nhv-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-validator-1.0" namespace="MyNamespace" assembly="MyAssembly"> <class name="Contact"> <property name="Address"> <length max="50"/> <valid/> </property> </class> </nhv-mapping> -----------------------------------------------------

  • how to set the output image use com.android.camera.action.CROP

    - by adi.zean
    I have code to crop an image, like this : public void doCrop(){ Intent intent = new Intent("com.android.camera.action.CROP"); intent.setType("image/"); List<ResolveInfo> list = getPackageManager().queryIntentActivities(intent,0); int size = list.size(); if (size == 0 ){ Toast.makeText(this, "Cant find crop app").show(); return; } else{ intent.setData(selectImageUri); intent.putExtra("outputX", 300); intent.putExtra("outputY", 300); intent.putExtra("aspectX", 1); intent.putExtra("aspectY", 1); intent.putExtra("scale", true); intent.putExtra("return-data", true); if (size == 1) { Intent i = new Intent(intent); ResolveInfo res = list.get(0); i.setComponent(new ComponentName(res.activityInfo.packageName, res.activityInfo.name)); startActivityForResult(i, CROP_RESULT); } } } public void onActivityResult (int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent dara){ if (resultCode == RESULT_OK){ if (requestCode == CROP_RESULT){ Bundle extras = data.getExtras(); if (extras != null){ bmp = extras.getParcelable("data"); } File f = new File(selectImageUri.getPath()); if (f.exists()) f.delete(); Intent inten3 = new Intent(this, tabActivity.class); startActivity(inten3); } } } from what i have read, the code intent.putExtra("outputX", 300); intent.putExtra("outputY", 300); is use to set the resolution of crop result, but why i can't get the result image resolution higer than 300x300? when i set the intent.putExtra("outputX", 800); intent.putExtra("outputY", 800); the crop function has no result or crash, any idea for this situation? the log cat say "! ! ! It saves the file correctly, then goes back to the top of the loop, and crashes at the previously mentioned line. I want it to ask for more input. What gives?

  • asp.net mvc stand alone ascx control how do i link (css and js) most efficiently

    - by Julian
Hi, I need some advice. I have developed some asp.net mvc web pages. Each page has a master and some ascx controls (between 2 - 6) embedded into it a js and css file. Up to now every thing was fine. In order to improve modularity, flexibility and testability the ascx's are now expected to be able to work as stand alone controls. (Each ascx has also got its own css and js files in some cases it has another control inside it) In order to meet this requirement we call the controller with the relevant parameters and it returns the ascx (partial) directly to the browser without all of the other parts of the original page . In order to get it to display correctly (css) and act correctly (js/jquery) all of the relevant files need to be added (as links or scripts eg. href="<%= ResolveUrl(styleSheet)%>") to the user control. This is "contradicting" the concept of positioning the files at the most logical place (could be the master page for example). How can I overcome this problem? Keep in mind that this is relevant for each "control" ascx file. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

  • In Ruby, why is a method invocation not be able to be treated as a unit when "do" and "end" is used?

    - by Jian Lin
The following question is related to the question "Ruby Print Inject Do Syntax". My question is, can we insist on using do and end and make it work with puts or p? This works: a = [1,2,3,4] b = a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end puts b # prints out 10 so, is it correct to say, inject is a class method of the Array class, which takes a block of code, and then returns a number. If so, then it should be no different from calling a function and getting back a return value: b = foo(3) puts b or b = circle.getRadius() puts b In the above two cases, we can directly say puts foo(3) puts circle.getRadius() so, there is no way to make it work directly by using the following 2 ways: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end but it gives ch01q2.rb:7:in `inject': no block given (LocalJumpError) from ch01q2.rb:4:in `each' from ch01q2.rb:4:in `inject' from ch01q2.rb:4 grouping the method call using ( ) doesn't work either: a = [1,2,3,4] puts (a.inject do |sum, x| sum + x end) and this gives: ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected kDO_BLOCK, expecting ')' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:4: syntax error, unexpected '|', expecting '=' puts (a.inject do |sum, x| ^ ch01q3.rb:6: syntax error, unexpected kEND, expecting $end end) ^ finally, the following version works: a = [1,2,3,4] puts a.inject { |sum, x| sum + x } but why doesn't the grouping of the method invocation using ( ) work in the earlier example? What if a programmer insist that he uses do and end, can it be made to work?

  • Streaming Youtube Videos

    - by Vinay
Hi All, I am writing an application to play the youtube videos using streaming. First method: I am getting the RTSP URL to the video using GData APIs. Here is the code to play the RTSP url. VideoView mVideoView = new VideoView(this); setContentView(mVideoView); mVideoView.setVideoURI(Uri.parse("rtsp://rtsp2.youtube.com/CiILENy73wIaGQkDwpjrUxOWQBMYESARFEgGUgZ2aWRlb3MM/0/0/0/video.3gp")); mVideoView.start(); But it throws error on both G1 device and emulator (Emulator has some firewall problem as per mailing list) Here is the error message ERROR/PlayerDriver(35): Command PLAYER_INIT completed with an error or info PVMFFailure Second method: A hack way to get the path of 3gp file from http://www.youtube.com/get_video?v=&t=<&<.. After getting the file path and I can call setVideoURI and it plays fine. But it is a hack way to achieve the requirement. I have checked the Youtube App also, it also does the hack way to play the youtube url.(Checked with logcat) I have tried changing from VideoView to MediaPlayer but no change in the error. Is there a "Clean" way to do this? Please let me know your thoughts.

  • relative url in wcf service binding

    - by Jeremy
I have a silverlight control which has a reference to a silverlight enabled wcf service. When I add a reference to the service in my silverlight control, it adds the following to my clientconfig file: <configuration> <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="BasicHttpBinding_DataAccess" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"> <security mode="None" /> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="http://localhost:3097/MyApp/DataAccess.svc" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="BasicHttpBinding_DataAccess" contract="svcMyService.DataAccess" name="BasicHttpBinding_DataAccess" /> </client> </system.serviceModel> </configuration> How do I specify a relative url in the endpoint address instead of the absolute url? I want it to work no matter where I deploy the web app to without having to edit the clientconfig file, because the silverlight component and the web app will always be deployed together. I thought I'd be able to specify just "DataAccess.svc" but it doesn't seem to like that.

  • Working with datetime type in Quickbooks My Time files

    - by jakemcgraw
I'm attempting to process Quickbooks My Time imt files using PHP. The imt file is a plaintext XML file. I've been able to use the PHP SimpleXML library with no issues but one: The numeric representations of datetime in the My Time XML files is something I've never seen before: <object type="TIMEPERIOD" id="z128"> <attribute name="notes" type="string"></attribute> <attribute name="start" type="date">308073428.00000000000000000000</attribute> <attribute name="running" type="bool">0</attribute> <attribute name="duration" type="double">3600</attribute> <attribute name="datesubmitted" type="date">310526237.59616601467132568359</attribute> <relationship name="activity" type="1/1" destination="ACTIVITY" idrefs="z130"></relationship> </object> You can see that attritube[@name='start'] has a value of: 308073428.00000000000000000000 This is not Excel based method of storage 308,073,428 is too many days since 1900-01-00 and it isn't Unix Epoch either. So, my question is, has anyone ever seen this type of datetime representation?

  • C standard addressing simplification inconsistency

    - by Chris Lutz
Section §6.5.3.2 "Address and indirection operators" ¶3 says (relevant section only): The unary & operator returns the address of its operand. ... If the operand is the result of a unary * operator, neither that operator nor the & operator is evaluated and the result is as if both were omitted, except that the constraints on the operators still apply and the result is not an lvalue. Similarly, if the operand is the result of a [] operator, neither the & operator nor the unary * that is implied by the [] is evaluated and the result is as if the & operator were removed and the [] operator were changed to a + operator. ... This means that this: int *i = NULL; printf("%p", (void *) (&*i) ); printf("%p", (void *) (&i[10]) ); Should be perfectly legal, printing the null pointer (probably 0) and the null pointer plus 10 (probably 10). The standard seems very clear that both of those cases are required to be optimized. However, it doesn't seem to require the following to be optimized: struct { int a; short b; } *s = 0; printf("%p", (void *) (&s->b) ); This seems awfully inconsistent. I can see no reason that the above code shouldn't print the null pointer plus sizeof(int) (possibly 4). Simplifying a &-> expression is going to be the same conceptually (IMHO) as &[], a simple address-plus-offset. It's even an offset that's going to be determinable at compile time, rather than potentially runtime with the [] operator. Is there anything in the rationale about why this is so seemingly inconsistent?

  • .NET Regex - Replace multiple characters at once without overwriting?

    - by Everaldo Aguiar
I'm implementing a c# program that should automatize a Mono-alphabetic substitution cipher. The functionality i'm working on at the moment is the simplest one: The user will provide a plain text and a cipher alphabet, for example: Plain text(input): THIS IS A TEST Cipher alphabet: A - Y, H - Z, I - K, S - L, E - J, T - Q Cipher Text(output): QZKL KL QJLQ I thought of using regular expressions since I've been programming in perl for a while, but I'm encountering some problems on c#. First I would like to know if someone would have a suggestion for a regular expression that would replace all occurrence of each letter by its corresponding cipher letter (provided by user) at once and without overwriting anything. Example: In this case, user provides plaintext "TEST", and on his cipher alphabet, he wishes to have all his T's replaced with E's, E's replaced with Y and S replaced with J. My first thought was to substitute each occurrence of a letter with an individual character and then replace that character by the cipherletter corresponding to the plaintext letter provided. Using the same example word "TEST", the steps taken by the program to provide an answer would be: 1 - replace T's with (lets say) @ 2 - replace E's with # 3 - replace S's with & 4 - Replace @ with E, # with Y, & with j 5 - Output = EYJE This solution doesn't seem to work for large texts. I would like to know if anyone can think of a single regular expression that would allow me to replace each letter in a given text by its corresponding letter in a 26-letter cipher alphabet without the need of splitting the task in an intermediate step as I mentioned. If it helps visualize the process, this is a print screen of my GUI for the program:
