• Why isn't the Cache invalidated after table update using the SqlCacheDependency?

  I have been trying to get SqlCacheDependency working. I think I have everything set up correctly, but when I update the table, the item in the Cache isn't invalidated. Can you look at my code and see if I am missing anything? I enabled the Service Broker for the Sandbox database. I have placed the following code in the Global.asax file. • Rate Limit Calls To Api Using Cache

  Hi I am using coldfusion to call the last.fm api, using a cfc bundle sourced from here I am concerned about going over the request limit, which is 5 requests per originating IP address per second, averaged over a 5 minute period. The cfc bundle has a central component which calls all the other components, which are split up into sections like "artist", "track" etc...This central component "lastFmApi.cfc." is initiated in my application, and persisted for the lifespan of the application // Application.cfc example <cffunction name="onApplicationStart"> <cfset var apiKey = '[your api key here]' /> <cfset var apiSecret = '[your api secret here]' /> <cfset application.lastFm = CreateObject('component', 'org.FrankFusion.lastFm.lastFmApi').init(apiKey, apiSecret) /> </cffunction> Now if I want to call the api through a handler/controller, for example my artist handler...I can do this <cffunction name="artistPage" cache="5 mins"> <cfset qAlbums = application.lastFm.user.getArtist(url.artistName) /> </cffunction> I am a bit confused towards caching, but am caching each call to the api in this handler for 5 mins, but does this make any difference, because each time someone hits a new artist page wont this still count as a fresh hit against the api? • C# / Silverlight / WPF / Fast rendering lots of circles

  I want to render a lot of circles or small graphics within either silverlight or wpf (around 1000-10000) as fast and as frequently as possible. If I have to go to DX or OGL, that's fine, but I'm wondering about doing this within either of those two frameworks first (read: it's OK if an answer is WPF-only or Silverlight-only). Also, if there is a way to access DX through WPF and render on a surface that way, I would be interested in that as well. So, what's the fastest way to draw a load of circles? They can be as plain as necessary, but they do need to have a radius. Currently I'm using DrawingVisual and a DrawingContext.DrawEllipse() command for each circle, then rendering the visual to a RenderTargetBItmap, but it becomes very slow as the number of circles rises. By the way, these circles move every frame, so caching isn't really an option unless you're going to suggest caching the individual circles . . . But their sizes are dynamic, so I'm not sure that's a great approach.

• HTTP Compression problems on IIS7

  I've spent quite a bit of time on this but seem to be going nowhere. I have a large page that I really want to speed up. The obvious place to start seems to be HTTP compression, but I just can't seem to get it to work for me. After considerable searching, I've tried several variations of the code below. It kind of works, but after refreshing the browser, the results seem to fall apart. They were turning to garbage when the page used caching. If I turn off caching, then the page seems right but I lose my CSS formatting (stored in a separate file) and get an error that an included JS file contains invalid characters. Most of the resources I've found on the Web were either very old or focused on accessing IIS directly. • Auditing front end performance on web application

  I am currently trying to performance tune the UI of a company web application. The application is only ever going to be accessed by staff, so the speed of the connection between the server and client will always be considerably more than if it was on the internet. I have been using performance auditing tools such as Y Slow! and Google Chrome's profiling tool to try and highlight areas that are worth targeting for investigation. However, these tools are written with the internet in mind. For example, the current suggestions from a Google Chrome audit of the application suggests is as follows: Network Utilization Combine external CSS (Red warning) Combine external JavaScript (Red warning) Enable gzip compression (Red warning) Leverage browser caching (Red warning) Leverage proxy caching (Amber warning) Minimise cookie size (Amber warning) Parallelize downloads across hostnames (Amber warning) Serve static content from a cookieless domain (Amber warning) Web Page Performance Remove unused CSS rules (Amber warning) Use normal CSS property names instead of vendor-prefixed ones (Amber warning) Are any of these bits of advice totally redundant given the connection speed and usage pattern? The users will be using the application frequently throughout the day, so it doesn't matter if the initial hit is large (when they first visit the page and build their cache) so long as a minimal amount of work is done on future page views. For example, is it worth the effort of combining all of our CSS and JavaScript files? It may speed up the initial page view, but how much of a difference will it really make on subsequent page views throughout the working day? I've tried searching for this but all I keep coming up with is the standard internet facing performance advice. Any advice on what to focus my performance tweaking efforts on in this scenario, or other auditing tool recommendations, would be much appreciated.

• Where to store site settings: DB? XML? CONFIG? CLASS FILES?

  I am re-building a news portal of which already have a large number of visits every day. One of the major concerns when re-building this site was to maximize performance and speed. Having said this, we have done many things from caching, to all sort of other measures to ensure speed. Now towards the end of the project, I am having a dilemma of where to store my site settings that would least affect performance. The site settings will include things such as: Domain, DefaultImgPath, Google Analytics code, default emails of editors as well as more dynamic design/display feature settings such as the background color of specific DIVs and default color for links etc.. As far as I know, I have 4 choices in storing all these info. Database: Storing general settings in the DB and caching them may be a solution however, I want to limit the access to the database for only necessary and essential functions of the project which generally are insert/update/delete news items, author articles etc.. XML: I can store these settings in an XML file but I have not done this sort of thing before so I don't know what kind of problems -if any- I might face in the future. CONFIG: I can also store these settings in web.config CLASS FILE: I can hard code all these settings in a SiteSettings class, but since the site admin himself will be able to edit these settings, It may not be the best solution. Currently, I am more close to choosing web.config but letting people fiddle with it too often is something I do not want. E.g. if somehow, I miss out a validation for something and it breaks the web.config, the whole site will go down. My concern basically is that, I cannot forsee any possible consequences of using any of the methods above (or is there any other?), I was hoping to get this question over to more experienced people out here who hopefully help make my decision.

• What is the difference between .get() and .fetch(1)

  I have written an app and part of it is uses a URL parser to get certain data in a ReST type manner. So if you put /foo/bar as the path it will find all the bar items and if you put /foo it will return all items below foo So my app has a query like data = Paths.all().filter('path =', self.request.path).get() Which works brilliantly. Now I want to send this to the UI using templates {% for datum in data %} <div class="content"> <h2>{{ datum.title }}</h2> {{ datum.content }} </div> {% endfor %} When I do this I get data is not iterable error. So I updated the Django to {% for datum in data.all %} which now appears to pull more data than I was giving it somehow. It shows all data in the datastore which is not ideal. So I removed the .all from the Django and changed the datastore query to data = Paths.all().filter('path =', self.request.path).fetch(1) which now works as I intended. In the documentation it says The db.get() function fetches an entity from the datastore for a Key (or list of Keys). So my question is why can I iterate over a query when it returns with fetch() but can't with get(). Where has my understanding gone wrong?

• Advice: Python Framework Server/Worker Queue management (not Website)

  I am looking for some advice/opinions of which Python Framework to use in an implementation of multiple 'Worker' PCs co-ordinated from a central Queue Manager. For completeness, the 'Worker' PCs will be running Audio Conversion routines (which I do not need advice on, and have standalone code that works). The Audio conversion takes a long time, and I need to co-ordinate an arbitrary number of the 'Workers' from a central location, handing them conversion tasks (such as where to get the source files, or where to ask for the job configuration) with them reporting back some additional info, such as the runtime of the converted audio etc. At present, I have a script that makes a webservice call to get the 'configuration' for a conversion task, based on source files located on the worker already (we manually copy the source files to the worker, and that triggers a conversion routine). I want to change this, so that we can distribute conversion tasks ("Oy you, process this: xxx") based on availability, and in an ideal world, based on pending tasks too. There is a chance that Workers can go offline mid-conversion (but this is not likely). All the workers are Windows based, the co-ordinator can be WIndows or Linux. I have (in my initial searches) come across the following - and I know that some are cross-dependent: Celery (with RabbitMQ) Twisted Django Using a framework, rather than home-brewing, seems to make more sense to me right now. I have a limited timeframe in which to develop this functional extension. An additional consideration would be using a Framework that is compatible with PyQT/PySide so that I can write a simple UI to display Queue status etc. I appreciate that the specifics above are a little vague, and I hope that someone can offer me a pointer or two. Again: I am looking for general advice on which Python framework to investigate further, for developing a Server/Worker 'Queue management' solution, for non-web activities (this is why DJango didn't seem the right fit).

• JavaScript doesn't parse when mod-rewrited through a PHP file?

However I'm wanting to shorten the path to the JavaScript file (aswell as do some caching) which is why I'm rewriting all JavaScript files via .htaccess to cache.php (which handles the caching). The .htaccess contains the following: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^js/(.+?\.js)$ cache.php?file=$1 [NC] </IfModule> cache.php contains the following PHP code: <?php if (extension_loaded('zlib')) { ob_start('ob_gzhandler'); } $file = basename($_GET['file']); if (file_exists("tpl/blue/js/".$file)) { header("Content-Type: application/javascript"); header('Cache-Control: must-revalidate'); header('Expires: ' . gmdate('D, d M Y H:i:s', time() + 3600) . (if I call the functions which are within functions.js later on in the page they don't work) - so theirs a problem either with cache.php or the rewrite rule? (because the file by itself works fine). If I access the rewrited file- http://localhost/js/functions.js directly it prints the JavaScript code, as any JavaScript file would - so I'm confused as to what I'm doing wrong... All help is appreciated! :)

• 3 questions about JSON-P format.

  Hi, I have to write a script which will be hosted on differents domains. This script has to get information from my server. So, stackoverflow's user told me that i have to use JSON-P format, which, after research, is what i'm going to do. (the data provided in JSON-P is for displaying some information hosted on my server on other website) How do I output JSON-P from my server ? Is it the same as the json_encode function from PHP How do i design the tree pattern for the output JSON-P (you know, like : ({"name" : "foo", "id" : "xxxxx", "blog" : "http://xxxxxx.com"}); can I steal this from my XML output ? (http://bit.ly/9kzBDP) Each time a visitor browse a website on which my widget is it'll make a request on my server, requesting the JSON-P data to display on the client side. It'll increase dramatically the CPU load (1 visitor on the website who will have the script = 1 SQL request on my server to output data), so is there any way to 'caching' the JSON-P information output to refresh it only one or twice a day and stores it into a 'file' (in which extension?). BUT on the other hand i would say that requesting the JSON-P data directly (without caching it) is a plus, because, websites which will integrates the script only want to display THEIR information and not the whole data. • Require reasonably random results from an SQL SELECT query within a Joomla article (Cache enabled)

  Setup: Joomla website on LAMP stack I have a MySQL table containing some records, these are queried by a simple SELECT on the Joomla article, as pasted below. This specific Joomla website has Caching turned on in Joomla's Global Configuration. I need to randomize the order in which I display the resultset, each time the page is loaded. Regular php/mysql would offer me two approaches for this: 1. use 'order by RAND()' or any of a number of methods to allow a SELECT query to return reasonably random results. 2. once php gets the result from the SELECT into an array, shuffle the array to get a reasonably random order of array items. However, as this Joomla instance has Caching turned ON in its Global Configuration, either of the above approaches fails. The first time I load the page the order is randomized, however any further reloads do not cause the order to change, as the page is delivered from cache. The instant the Cache is disabled, both approaches (shuffle/order by rand) work perfectly. What am I missing? How do I override the Global Cache for this specific article? A very simple requirement, that is met by both php and mysql reasonably well, is blocked by the Joomla Cache that I cannot turn off. • HTML5 Local Storage of audio element source - is it possible?

  Hi stackoverflow experts I've been experimenting with the audio and local storage features of html5 of late and have run into something that has me stumped. I'd like to be able to cache or store the source of the audio element locally to enable speedier and offline playback. The problem is I can't see how this is possible with the current implementation. I have tried the following using webkit: Creating a manifest file to set up local caching but the audio file appears not to be a cacheable item maybe due to the way it is stream or something I have also attempted to use javascript to put an audio object into local storage but the size of the mp3 makes this impossible due to memory issues (i think). I have tried to use the data uri and base64 to use the html as a audio transport that can be cached but again the filesize makes this prohibitive. Also the audio element does not seem to like this in webkit (works fine in mozilla) I have tried several methods of putting the data into the local database store. Again suffering the same issues as the other cases. I'd love to hear any other ideas anyone may have as to how I could achieve my goal of offline playback using caching/local storage in webkit.

• Making IE "forget" information entered in form when using back button.

  I have a page with a form where many of the fields are populated from variables passed in the URL. Those fields are disabled (NON-EDITABLE) and are only there for the user to view. The remaining fields require user input and are NOT disabled (EDITABLE). When the form is submitted a confirmation page comes up. It may be the case that the user needs to submit several of these forms where the NON-EDITABLE information is identical from form to form, so being able to go back to the form page from the confirmation page would save a lot of time. The way I want this to work is when a user presses the back button all the NON-EDITABLE fields are populated, but the EDITABLE fields are blank. This is what Firefox is doing, but IE8 is does not "forget" what has been entered in the EDITABLE fields. To disable the cache the following appears at the beginning of my page AND at the end of my page. <head> <meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache"/> <meta http-equiv="Cache-Control" content="no-store"/> <head/> What more must I do to make IE forget what was entered in the EDITABLE fields when the back button is pressed? All of my pages are generated with PHP if that matters. EDIT: It appears to me that this is a problem of IE caching my page even though I have told it not to. Are my meta tags correct? Do I need to do something else to prevent IE from caching my page?

• How do I deal with different requests that map to the same response?

  I'm designing a Web service. The request is idempotent, so I chose the GET method. The response is relatively expensive to calculate and not small, so I want to get caching (on the protocol level) right. (Don't worry about memoisation at my part, I have that already covered; my question here is actually also paying attention to the Web as a whole.) There's only one mandatory parameter and a number of optional parameter with default values if missing. For example, the following two map to the same representation of the response. (If this is a dumb way to go about it the interface, propose something better.) GET /service?mandatory_parameter=some_data HTTP/1.1 GET /service?mandatory_parameter=some_data;optional_parameter=default1;another_optional_parameter=default2;yet_another_optional_parameter=default3 HTTP/1.1 However, I imagine clients do not know this and would treat them separate and therefore waste cache storage. What should I do to avoid violating the golden rule of caching? Make up a canonical form, document it (e.g. all parameters are required after all and need to be sorted in a specific order) and return a client error unless the required form is met? Instead of an error, redirect permanently to the canonical form of a request? Or is it enough to not mind how the request looks like, and just respond with the same ETag for same responses?

• .NET WebRequest.PreAuthenticate not quite what it sounds like

  I’ve run into the  problem a few times now: How to pre-authenticate .NET WebRequest calls doing an HTTP call to the server – essentially send authentication credentials on the very first request instead of waiting for a server challenge first? At first glance this sound like it should be easy: The .NET WebRequest object has a PreAuthenticate property which sounds like it should force authentication credentials to be sent on the first request. Looking at the MSDN example certainly looks like it does: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.net.webrequest.preauthenticate.aspx Unfortunately the MSDN sample is wrong. As is the text of the Help topic which incorrectly leads you to believe that PreAuthenticate… wait for it - pre-authenticates. But it doesn’t allow you to set credentials that are sent on the first request. What this property actually does is quite different. It doesn’t send credentials on the first request but rather caches the credentials ONCE you have already authenticated once. Http Authentication is based on a challenge response mechanism typically where the client sends a request and the server responds with a 401 header requesting authentication. Now if you use WebRequest (or WebClient) the default behavior is to re-authenticate on every request that requires authorization. This means if you look in  Fiddler or some other HTTP client Proxy that captures requests you’ll see that each request re-authenticates: Here are two requests fired back to back: and you can see the 401 challenge, the 200 response for both requests. If you watch this same conversation between a browser and a server you’ll notice that the first 401 is also there but the subsequent 401 requests are not present. WebRequest.PreAuthenticate And this is precisely what the WebRequest.PreAuthenticate property does: It’s a caching mechanism that caches the connection credentials for a given domain in the active process and resends it on subsequent requests. This is quite useful as it saves quite a few round trips to the server – bascially it saves one auth request request for every authenticated request you make. In most scenarios I think you’d want to send these credentials this way but one downside to this is that there’s no way to log out the client. Since the client always sends the credentials once authenticated only an explicit operation ON THE SERVER can undo the credentials by forcing another login explicitly (ie. re-challenging with a forced 401 request). Forcing Basic Authentication Credentials on the first Request On a few occasions I’ve needed to send credentials on a first request – mainly to some oddball third party Web Services (why you’d want to use Basic Auth on a Web Service is beyond me – don’t ask but it’s not uncommon in my experience). This is true of certain services that are using Basic Authentication (especially some Apache based Web Services) and REQUIRE that the authentication is sent right from the first request. No challenge first. Ugly but there it is. Now the following works only with Basic Authentication because it’s pretty straight forward to create the Basic Authorization ‘token’ in code since it’s just an unencrypted encoding of the user name and password into base64. As you might guess this is totally unsecure and should only be used when using HTTPS/SSL connections (i’m not in this example so I can capture the Fiddler trace and my local machine doesn’t have a cert installed, but for production apps ALWAYS use SSL with basic auth). However, this only works with Basic Auth because you can actually create the authentication credentials easily on the client because it’s essentially clear text. The same doesn’t work for Windows or Digest authentication since you can’t easily create the authentication token on the client and send it to the server. Another issue with this approach is that PreAuthenticate has no effect when you manually force the authentication. As far as Web Request is concerned it never sent the authentication information so it’s not actually caching the value any longer. In effect you’ll end up with one extra 401 request in this scenario, which is still better than 401 challenges on each request. Getting Access to WebRequest in Classic .NET Web Service Clients If you’re running a classic .NET Web Service client (non-WCF) one issue with the above is how do you get access to the WebRequest to actually add the custom headers to do the custom Authentication described above? One easy way is to implement a partial class that allows you add headers with something like this: public partial class TaxService { protected NameValueCollection Headers = new NameValueCollection(); public void AddHttpHeader(string key, string value) { this.Headers.Add(key,value); } public void ClearHttpHeaders() { this.Headers.Clear(); } protected override WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest) base.GetWebRequest(uri); request.Headers.Add(this.Headers); return request; } } where TaxService is the name of the .NET generated proxy class. In code you can then call AddHttpHeader() anywhere to add additional headers which are sent as part of the GetWebRequest override. Nice and simple once you know where to hook it. For WCF there’s a bit more work involved by creating a message extension as described here: http://weblogs.asp.net/avnerk/archive/2006/04/26/Adding-custom-headers-to-every-WCF-call-_2D00_-a-solution.aspx. FWIW, I think that HTTP header manipulation should be readily available on any HTTP based Web Service client DIRECTLY without having to subclass or implement a special interface hook. But alas a little extra work is required in .NET to make this happen Not a Common Problem, but when it happens… This has been one of those issues that is really rare, but it’s bitten me on several occasions when dealing with oddball Web services – a couple of times in my own work interacting with various Web Services and a few times on customer projects that required interaction with credentials-first services. Since the servers determine the protocol, we don’t have a choice but to follow the protocol. • How can I run supervisord without using root?

  I seem to be having trouble figuring out why supervisord won't run as a non-root user. • Nginx php-fpm high cpu usage

  I have a problem with a high traffic wordpress, super high CPU load under nginx php-fpm, I am caching with apc, and memcached, spent 2-3 days tweaking configs and looking for answers it seems to me that php-fpm takes up all the cpu available no matter how many max_children i set if i set 5 then the load is 20% each, if i set 20 then the load adds up till 90% i tried static and dynamic server is 2x3.0Ghz 6GB Ram SSD in raid 10 on ubuntu 12.04 x64 utpime: 17:27:51 up 2:19, 1 user, load average: 29.79, 28.08, 26.29 what can be the issue?

• VMWare Esxi Looking for Bottlenecks

  I have a VMWare ESxi box, 22GB ram, Dual Quad Core Xeon, 2 Sas drives + Write caching raid controller etc. Anyways, have about 30 small XP VM's running on it and starting to get some very slow boot times and other performance issues. I THINK its I/O but looking at the graphs not too sure what to look for. Any ideas on what to look for would be appreciated. Here is the data I've got so far: (I feel like my IO is high but not sure what to bench it against)
