  • Posting videos to a website... with a dynamically updating interface

    I'm currently putting together a website for my Luddite friend. He needs a blog, photos and videos... all easily updateable by him. WordPress and Blogger both have brilliant functionality to allow you to host your own blog on your own domain, but what about photos and videos? Does YouTube or Google videos or Vimeo or MSN Video or anyone offer the ability to easily insert a video navigation interface onto your own site? (Something similar to YouTube's "Channel" pages, except on your own domain?) Same goes for photos. I'm pretty sure FlickR doesn't allow you to easily upload and manage photos for viewing on your own domain. Does anyone else? My friend doesn't want to be editing any HTML and I don't want to be creating a complicated system to handle tons of different videos. There must a user-friendly solution in this day and age?   • Any limitations for putting an SSD in a Mini? How fast would an external HDD be via Firewire? Is Ser

    I'm considering getting a Mini for web programming. I do a lot of text searches so I want to put a SSD in it. Does the Mini have any limitations that might effect the performance of a SSD? I'm trying to decide if I should get a Mini Server. I'd like to be able to have two internal drives so one can be SSD for OS and the code I'm working on, and the other can be my storage drive. However, I'm not sure if I'll be using the extra functionality of the server edition OSX or not, so I'm reluctant to pay the $200 premium. In a "regular" Mini I could put the SSD internal and use an external big drive, but would the external drive be fast enough via Firewire? Thanks in advance for any info.

  • How to access XAMPP virtual hosts from iPad on local network?

    Using XAMPP on one machine. Multiple virtual hosts defined. One per project. Format is .local For example: apple.local microsoft.local client-site.local our-own-internal-site.local All works perfectly from that one machine. I now want to have other systems within the network access the various sites. The main reason for wanting to do this is to be able to test site functionality and layout from mobile devices without having to upload partial work to public servers. I can access the main XAMPP default site by simply entering the IP address of the XAMPP machine in, say, Safari on an iPad. However, there is no way to reach .local that I can see. Would this entail setting up a DNS server within the network? We have a mixture of Windows and Mac machines. No Linux. The XAMPP machine is Vista 64. I don't want real external internet access to be affected in any way, just ".local" pointed to the XAMPP machine if that makes sense.

  • How to push changes from Test server to Live server?

    As a beginner, I finally noticed the issue with making changes to the live server I've been working on, now that I have a couple users on it, since I bring it down so often. I created an EC2 image of my live server and set up a separate instance on EC2, so now I have 2 EC2 instances, Stage and Production. I set up GitHub and push changes to stage and test my code there, and when it's all done and working, I push it to the production branch, and everything is good. And there is a slight issue here since I name my files config_stage.js and config_production.js and set up .gitignore on each server, and in my code, I would have it read the ENV flags and set up the appropriate configs, is this the correct approach? And my main question is: how do you keep track of non-code changes to the server? For example, I installed HAProxy, Stunnel, Redis, MongoDB and several other things onto the Stage server for testing and now that it's all working and good, how do I deploy them to production? Right now, I'm just keeping track of everything I installed and copying configuration files over, which is very tedious and I'm afraid I may have missed a step somewhere. Is there a better way to port these changes over from my test server to my live server?

    I've always found that just developing in Windows, and using Safari for Windows has been sufficient. However, Safari 6 has now been released, and I've got at least one user who has contacted me, saying he's experienced problems with one of my sites on his new ipad. The trouble is that Safari for Windows only goes up to 5.1.7. Do I have to go out and buy a new mac/ipad/iphone in order to test my code, or is there another way?

    I'm currently trying to connect 2 USB devices together, but both ends are type A plugs. Before I buy a physical extension cords with 2 type A receptacles, I'd like to know if I can connect these 2 devices together at all by passing data "transparently" through a Linux box with = 2 USB ports. I'm actually trying to connect a keyboard to an Android phone, and I want to first try if it can work by using a Linux box as a "virtual" USB extension cord.     There is an "Always on topmost" menu option for windows. I'm not sure if it's related to compiz or metacity. I want to set the Totem player or Cheese the WebCAM player, always below the bottom-most, so I can view the movie when I'm working. And, let the "Always below the bottom-most" windows be excluded in the windows list is even better. If there is no such function yet, where should I begin if I want to develop one? It's Compiz or Gtk or XFB or something else?

    I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

    I'm new to stackoverflow and have been reading through a bunch of the "highest voted" questions for GWT. Several of these questions talk about the pitfalls or problems with GWT. In the articles: Which Javascript framework (jQuery vs Dojo vs … )? and Biggest GWT Pitfalls?, some posters seem to suggest that GWT is not lightweight enough or that there are better alternatives that may be used. Do most of you feel that there are problems with GWT that have not been fixed with GWT 2.0 -- which would make you inclined to suggest using a simpler framework for a new project? To some extent, shouldn't GWT be somewhat future-proof (since you don't have to worry about it changing drastically from release to release and since it is backed by Google)? I realize that the answer to this question depends greatly upon what you want to do or what you wish to make. I am looking at this from the perspective of starting a new web application that will eventually be used by millions of users.

Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. I have knowledge of Java, C, SQL most of it is university level stuff. I work daily with PHP/SQL building web apps. Which language / technology would you advise me to learn.     Here is my problem - I have a lot of users using different browsers accessing many internal web sites using https. I can create my own Certificate Authority, than create a certificate for each server and after that have all the users import it. Obviously, it cannot work in reality - there are too many users and too many sites, and some sites will be added in the future. I'm looking for a way to automate this. Is there a way to create a certificate so that all major browsers (IE, FF, Opera, Chrome and Safari) would trust it for all servers ? If so, what is the best way to install it automatically in all major browsers ?

    I'm getting ready to start a C# web application project and just wanted some opinions regarding pulling data from a database. As far as I can tell, I can either use C# code to access the database from the code behind (i.e. LINQ) of my web app or I can call a stored procedure that will collect all the data and then read it with a few lines of code in my code behind. I'm curious to know which of these two approaches, or any other approach, would be the most efficient, elegant, future proof and easiest to test.
