• SharePoint Item Edit Form (editform.aspx) keeps closing webparts - MOSS 2007

  We have a custom list within MOSS 2007 which sporadically closes the edit forms web part, despite the fact that the web parts property 'allow close' is unticked. The only way to make the form work again is to edit the page in SharePoint Designer and untick the option of 'web part closed', this then allows the form to function but at a seemingly random interval it will close itself again. There is quite a large user base accessing the site/list at anyone time, also note this has happened once on another list on another site collection. Has anyone else experienced this issue before or can offer any advice?

• Google Analytics www 301 causing issues with In-Page Analytics

  The closest question I could find to my problem is This one. The similarity is: I have a profile in Google Analytics (GA) that has been collecting data for a year. The domain setting in GA is "http://example.com". The site, however, will redirect any non-www request, to www.example.com, via a typical .htaccess refinement. We do this to keep the traffic on the load balancers. I don't know the method the original user had in place, but we're doing a 301 on any non-www to the www equivalent. I believe this has to be somewhat standard. Where I differ from this question is in the error message I receive when trying to load the In-Page Analytics. I'm instead receiving: Error: The Website in your settings (http://example.com), redirects into a different domain. (http://www.example.com). In-Page Analytics currently works on only one domain. Note that www.example.com and example.com are NOT considered to be on the same domain. Also, make sure you're not redirecting from http:// to https:// or vice versa. I understand what's being explained, it just seems as though this can't be the end-all. I tried updating the Analytics settings, which from day one has been set as "One domain with multiple subdomains", but I don't see any options to change the URL ( which is currently set to http://example.com and not http://www.example.com ). I'd prefer not to have to change the URL if that was at all possible, but I can't seem to find any documentation or anything that provide any possible solutions.

  I have an excel sheet with three columns: date, person and percentage. I would like to put in a data validation that flags cells if the total for a given data/person combination do not equal 100%. Is that possible? In other words, in the custom formula of a data validation, I would like to make the following type of formula. =if(sum( cells with a (date = the date on this row, person = person on this row))=1) Is there a function which will return the cells in a range conditioned on certain values, or will sum the cells. Note that if it is not possible to do two cells, I have no issue adding a cell which combines both values for the purpose of effecting the lookup.

• Wildcards not being substituted

Does anyone have an idea of why? Please note: If global expansion fails, the pattern is not substituted. • Copying files locally on a network folder

  I noticed that copying a large file from one location on a network drive to another location on the same network drive takes much longer than copying it locally. Instead of copying the file locally, the network computer sends the file to my remote computer, which sends it back to the same network computer. This means the files are being transferred over the network completely unnecessarily. Is there a way to fix this issue? It's becoming a real hassle to manage the video files on my network drive. Note: This is the case with both Windows and Linux (using Samba) network folders.

Question2: How can I link an excel pivot-table to a potentially changing source table without having to re-draw the excel pivot-table layout every time the source table changes data. (Note, the columns are not changing, just the data in the rows). Background: I have an excel 2007 pivot table that is grabbing data from another sheet (an excel "table" ... tables are a new feature of excel 2007). When I change the data in the source table, and then go to the pivot table and press "refresh" ... the pivot table reverts to its "blank" format and requires me to re-drag the columns rows and values. What I want is for the pivot-table to simply re-draw itself without me having to re-create the pivot table layout.

  We have a server that sends our weekly newsletter to subscribers, To prevent people like Hotmail or Yahoo from blocking us due to sending too many simultaneous emails to them, Is there a way we can stagger email, or rate-limit outbound emails from postfix? Keep in mind, I dont want the mailserver to stop queueing mail or accepting new messages, Simply defer delivery if there are more then 3-4 messages per destination domain/ipaddress, or something similar. Note: I dont want a Sender Throttle, as described in a similar question, here. I'm looking more for a recipient throttle but haven't had any luck finding out how to do so with PolicyD or Anvil services, and was wondering if anyone else has accomplished such a task.

• Proxy via Telnet

  I know telnet is insecure and all, but I'm stuck using it because ssh is blocked. I know how to setup ssh to bind the connection to a local port, is there a way to do this with telnet? For example, if I am using an ssh connection, I would bind it to port 999 like this: ssh -D 999 [email protected] -N -C I've tried using the -b command in linux, but to no avail. Is this even possible? This is what I've tried: telnet host.com -b 999 I'm sorry if the answer is obvious, but I've done a lot of research and testing and I can't seem to figure this out. NOTE: I plan on telling the admin if I can find a way to get this to work, this is based off of simple curiosity and not malicious intent. If I can't bind a telnet port, is there a way to tunnel an ssh connection through telnet?

• Load balancing Apache on a budget?

  Hi everyone, I am trying to get my head around the concept of load balancing to ensure availability and redundancy to keep users happy when things go wrong, rather than load balancing for the sake of offering blistering speed to millions of users. We're on a budget and trying to stick to the stuff where there's plenty of knowledge available, so running Apache on Ubuntu VPS's seems like the strategy until some famous search engine acquire us (Saturday irony included, please note). At least to me, it's a complete jungle of different solutions available. Apaches own mod_proxy & HAproxy are two that we found by a quick google search, but having zero experience of load balancing, I have no idea of what would be appropriate for our situation, or what we would look after while choosing a solution to solve our availability concerns. What is the best option for us? What should we do to get availability high whilst staying inside our budgets?

The enhancements included in this Group Fix include: UI Hints - In previous group fixes of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework the infrastructure to support UI Hints was introduced. Prior to this enhancement, products and implementers typically would build at least one UI Map per Business Object to display and/or maintain the object. Whilst, this can be generated using the UI Map maintenance function and stored, this enhancement allows additional tags and elements to be added to the Business Object directly to allow dynamic generation of the UI Map for maintenance and viewing the object. This reduces the need to generate and build a UI Map at all for that object. This will reduce maintenance effort of maintaining the product and implementation by eliminating the need to maintain the HTML for the UI Map. • Launch an arbitrary application with a specific icon

  I'm thinking about customizing my Windows 7's application icons, so that they all follow a specific theme (Token-like icons). This would involve using Resource Hacker (or similar) to patch each .exe. Not only this would be tiresome, but also it would require doing it again at each update of each application (nevermind that some could break just because it was tampered with). Instead, is there any way to launch an application with a specific icon? Ideally it would be something from the command-line (so I can make a shortcut), like this: launchwithicon.exe --app C:\myapp.exe --icon C:\myicon.ico Note that while it is possible to do something similar by setting the taskbar to "always combine, hide labels", I do not like this approach and instead am looking for something that works without combining the taskbar icons.

Currently considering zookeeper as a distributed locking mechanism. Since the recommendation of a znode is not to exceed the 1M size , the understanding is that zookeeper should not be used a distributed queue. And also from Netflix curator tech note 4. So should a distributed cache, say like memcached, or redis be used to emulate a distributed queue ? i.e. The distributed queue will be stored in the caches and will be locked cluster-wide via zookeeper. Are there potential pitfalls with this high-level approach. The objects don't need to be taken off the queue. The object will pass through a lifecycle which will determine its removal from the queue. There would be about 10k+ objects in a queue at a given time changing states and any node could service one stage of the object's lifecycle. (Although not strictly necessary .. i.e. one node could serve the entire lifecycle if that is more efficient.) Any suggestions/alternatives ? sidenote: new to zookeeper ; redis etc.

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Two Connections Related Global Variables Explained – @@CONNECTIONS and @@MAX_CONNECTIONS @@CONNECTIONS Returns the number of attempted connections, either successful or unsuccessful since SQL Server was last started. @@MAX_CONNECTIONS Returns the maximum number of simultaneous user connections allowed on an instance of SQL Server. The number returned is not necessarily the number currently configured. Query Editor – Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This post may be very simple for most of the users of SQL Server 2005. Earlier this year, I have received one question many times – Where is Query Analyzer in SQL Server 2005? I wrote small post about it and pointed many users to that post – SQL SERVER – 2005 Query Analyzer – Microsoft SQL SERVER Management Studio. Recently I have been receiving similar question. OUTPUT Clause Example and Explanation with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE SQL Server 2005 has a new OUTPUT clause, which is quite useful. OUTPUT clause has access to insert and deleted tables (virtual tables) just like triggers. OUTPUT clause can be used to return values to client clause. OUTPUT clause can be used with INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE to identify the actual rows affected by these statements. OUTPUT clause can generate a table variable, a permanent table, or temporary table. Even though, @@Identity will still work with SQL Server 2005, however I find the OUTPUT clause very easy and powerful to use. Let us understand the OUTPUT clause using an example. Find Name of The SQL Server Instance Based on database server stored procedures has to run different logic. We came up with two different solutions. 1) When database schema is very much changed, we wrote completely new stored procedure and deprecated older version once it was not needed. 2) When logic depended on Server Name we used global variable @@SERVERNAME. It was very convenient while writing migrating script which depended on the server name for the same database. Explanation of TRY…CATCH and ERROR Handling With RAISEERROR Function One of the developers at my company thought that we can not use the RAISEERROR function in new feature of SQL Server 2005 TRY… CATCH. When asked for an explanation he suggested SQL SERVER – 2005 Explanation of TRY… CATCH and ERROR Handling article as excuse suggesting that I did not give example of RAISEERROR with TRY…CATCH. We all thought it was funny. Just to keep records straight, TRY… CATCH can sure use RAISEERROR function. Different Types of Cache Objects Serveral kinds of objects can be stored in the procedure cache: Compiled Plans: When the query optimizer finishes compiling a query plan, the principal output is compiled plan. Execution contexts: While executing a compiled plan, SQL Server has to keep track of information about the state of execution. Cursors: Cursors track the execution state of server-side cursors, including the cursor’s current location within a resultset. Algebrizer trees: The Algebrizer’s job is to produce an algebrizer tree, which represents the logic structure of a query. Open SSMS From Command Prompt – sqlwb.exe Example This article is written by request and suggestion of Sr. Web Developer at my organization. Due to the nature of this article most of the content is referred from Book On-Line. sqlwbcommand prompt utility which opens SQL Server Management Studio. Squib command does not run queries from the command prompt. sqlcmd utility runs queries from command prompt, read for more information. 2008 Puzzle – Solution – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation Just a day before I wrote article SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation which was inspired by SQL Server MVP Jacob Sebastian. I suggest that before continuing this article read the original puzzle question SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation.The question was if the computed column was of datatype TINYINT how to create a Computed Column of datatype INT? 2008 – Find If Index is Being Used in Database It is very often I get a query that how to find if any index is being used in the database or not. If any database has many indexes and not all indexes are used it can adversely affect performance. If the number of indices are higher it reduces the INSERT / UPDATE / DELETE operation but increase the SELECT operation. It is recommended to drop any unused indexes from table to improve the performance. 2009 Interesting Observation – Execution Plan and Results of Aggregate Concatenation Queries If you want to see what’s going on here, I think you need to shift your point of view from an implementation-centric view to an ANSI point of view. ANSI does not guarantee processing the order. Figure 2 is interesting, but it will be potentially misleading if you don’t understand the ANSI rule-set SQL Server operates under in most cases. Implementation thinking can certainly be useful at times when you really need that multi-million row query to finish before the backup fire off, but in this case, it’s counterproductive to understanding what is going on. SQL Server Management Studio and Client Statistics Client Statistics are very important. Many a times, people relate queries execution plan to query cost. This is not a good comparison. Both parameters are different, and they are not always related. It is possible that the query cost of any statement is less, but the amount of the data returned is considerably larger, which is causing any query to run slow. How do we know if any query is retrieving a large amount data or very little data? 2010 I encourage all of you to go through complete series and write your own on the subject. I always remembered the syntax and ha d actually written it down before, but somehow it was not coming to mind quickly this time. I searched online and I ended up on my own article written last year SQL SERVER – Get Last Running Query Based on SPID. I felt that I am getting old because I forgot this really simple syntax. Find Total Number of Transaction on Interval In one of my recent Performance Tuning assignments I was asked how do someone know how many transactions are happening on a server during certain interval. I had a handy script for the same. Following script displays transactions happened on the server at the interval of one minute. You can change the WAITFOR DELAY to any other interval and it should work. 2011 Here are two DMV’s which are newly introduced in SQL Server 2012 and provides vital information about SQL Server. DMV – sys.dm_os_volume_stats – Information about operating system volume DMV – sys.dm_os_windows_info – Information about Operating System SQL Backup and FTP – A Quick and Handy Tool I have used this tool extensively since 2009 at numerous occasion and found it to be very impressive. What separates it from the crowd the most – it is it’s apparent simplicity and speed. When I install SQLBackupAndFTP and configure backups – all in 1 or 2 minutes, my clients are always impressed. Quick Note about JOIN – Common Questions and Simple Answers In this blog post we are going to talk about join and lots of things related to the JOIN. I recently started office hours to answer questions and issues of the community. I receive so many questions that are related to JOIN. I will share a few of the same over here.   I'm a big user of wikis, mainly Dokuwiki, I really like the clarity and ease of use of simple text files. However all good wikis seem to require a web-server of some kind; has anyone come across a good desktop wiki editor/viewer that work with plain-text files, and allow me to work with wiki text files just like any other document file type (note: not a desktop wiki running inside a local webserver) Before you rush to suggest (I hope!) I have done months of research on this and have tried Wixi, Wikidpad, zulupad.... Any ideas anyone?

(Note: The link from the revision list does not work outside that list, if you enter it in the address bar you just get the list, not the document; the URL in the address bar when you load the older revision does not work either)

• How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

  I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

• Disable ability to add startup items in Windows 7?

  Note: This is not the question "How to disable startup items" because the simple answer is: "Use msconfig". Now as for my question: I recently am very annoyed that some programs add startup items to my PC without my knowledge after installation, I always have 2 programs which startup - Temperature monitor and the Catalyst Control Center Tray. Now, sometimes I install something and it adds startup entries, how can I make sure that no startup entries can be added to windows anymore? So what I would like to do: -Disable adding scheduled tasks (even for administrator accounts, so programs installing from them can't add startup entries too) -Disable adding startup entries to the registry (even for administrators, would changing the permissions in HKLM on the Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to read only be enough?) -Disable all other methods of startup in Windows 7 I don't know -Set default startup of NEW installed services to "Start Manually" instead of/and block "Start Automaticly" and "Start Automaticly (Delayed)" How can I accomplish this? This is also a nice way to prevent most viruses fom running after machine reboot (if this can be accomplished).

• New WebLogic Server 12.1.2 Installation and Patching Technology By Monica Riccelli

  WebLogic Server 12.1.2 has many new features, but the first new feature you are likely to notice is the change in installer technology. WebLogic Server and Coherence 12.1.2 are installed using Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) installer technology. We have also changed WebLogic Server patching technology from SmartUpdate to OPatch, the patching tool used to patch OUI installations. Note that installation and patching technology used for prior versions of WebLogic Server has not changed. The primary motivation for this change is to provide consistency across the Oracle stack. Prior to WebLogic Server 12.1.2, Fusion Middleware customers were required to use different technologies to install and patch, for example, Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF) with WebLogic Server. Now users can perform installation and patching across products more efficiently by using the same technologies, and by using new installation packages that simplify installation of Fusion Middleware products with WebLogic Server. Check the YouTube video that describes how to install  WebLogic Server 12.1.2 using the  OUI installer.
