  • How can I install another version of Ubuntu on my computer and then uninstall it without messing up my bootup process?

    - by snowguy
I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed and I am having some problems with it. I'd like to see if the problems are related to some customizations I did. Since one of my problems relate to the slow logout process, I don't want to use the live version. I want to actually install a new version in a separate partition along side my current version and then, after testing that new version and figuring out what I want, just removing the partition and going back to a single version of Ubuntu on this computer. Does anyone know how to do that without messing up my boot process?

  • IE7 and 8 Hangs Randomly on CSS Images

    - by BJ Safdie
We have an ASP.NET 3.5 application that has been in production for over a year. Our last release was a couple of months ago. We use CSS for styling and application of background images to divs and such. The server is Windows 2003 with IIS. Suddenly, this week, we have had reports from some users that the page seems to hang up while loading. The status bar was showing the name of a background image used in the page main area (assigned in CSS). At our office, some of us could recreate the problem, while others could not. IE6 and Firefox do not seem to be affected, only IE7/8. Running Fiddler on an affected machine and trying to see what was happening with the requests seemed to make the problem go away (while running through Fiddler, it returned when not). Hitting Refresh on a hung load often made the page load just fine. I checked the background image, and even replaced it with an archived copy. No joy. We re-deployed the app from our production source. No Joy. We restarted IIS and eventually rebooted the whole server. There are no unusual entries in the event logs, the app logs or the IIS logs. Finally, I removed the image entirely and re-styled the page not to use a background image. That solved the problem at least for now. However, we have reports of other images "hanging." The images are PNGs, but I have heard some rumors that sometimes a GIF hangs, but I have no screenshot to confirm. This just started happening "out of the blue." There have been no releases or updates applied to the server recently. We even checked updates on clients to see if a recent Windows Update might have caused this on the client, but there was nothing updated within the last couple of weeks. If you have any information about this problem, I would love to hear from you. I would also greatly appreciate any recommendations on additional diagnostics we can try.

  • Inconsistent Session data from IE - cached sessions???

    - by pedalpete
I'm trying to prevent some basic click-fraud on my site, and am building links based on session time data. Everything works in FF, but in IE the information I'm storing in the session is somehow being changed. When I load up the main page, I set my session variables like this session_start(); $_SESSION['time']=$time(); I'm out putting the session value into the page, so I get something like 1275512393. When the user clicks on a link, I send an ajax request, and that page is returning the session which I am putting into an alert. session_start(); echo $_SESSION['time']; die(); The alert is returning 1275512422. Only in IE is the $_SESSION['time'] being returned different from the original $_SESSION['time'] It doesn't appear that this is a caching issue, as the times are always VERY near each other, and the second one is always after the first, but I'm not positive.

  • Cant append "used" DOMObject in IE

    - by Kein
I have some objects, that keep created DOMObjects, like here: function category(){ var domBlock; this.block = function(){ if (!domBlock){ // Here dom-object constructor $('<div></div>'); etc } return domBlock; // jquery object, // but i test and native document.createElement } } Then i clear category's area, and append old and new received(with Ajax) objects: area.html(''); for(id in category_list){ area.append( category_list[id].block() ); } where category_list is list that contain category objects. Area is jQuery object. In other browsers (except IE) i get area with all needed categories, but in IE i get only new received categories(that just create DomObject), other old objects that keeped old DomObject not show. I know it possible make with innerHTML, but i wont keep DomObject, not text. Because DomObject keep many events. And it very hard for browser attach events for each DomObject after refresh area.

  • JavaScript library not working in IE, can't see error information.

    - by Wolfy87
Hi there. I have been writing a JavaScript library for a few weeks now and it works brilliantly in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. I had not tested it in IE until recently. I do not own a Windows box so after testing it on my friends and realising it wasnt working I started going over my code for things that could be causing it to break. So far I have found nothing. I could not find any descriptions of the errors in the browser while I was there either. So I wondered if anyone could run my test script in an IE browser (6, 7 or 8) and let me know any information they can find as to why it crashed. Please ignore any information saying it works in IE6, I put that up there after testing it through http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/ I just assumed it was working because I could set transparency and size via my script and see it run in this tool. Here is the link to my GitHub repository: https://github.com/Wolfy87/Spark If you download it and run spark.html it will attempt to run all of my functions from the library. So if anyone could be kind enough to run it in IE and either let me know what errors they are getting and possibly how to fix them then I will be extreamly grateful. Thank you in advance. EDIT: Here is it's website http://sparkjs.co.uk/

  • Div not filling width of floated container (css expert needed

    - by Rayden
    I know there are many variations of this question posted, but none I've found quite provide an answer that works for this case. I basically have two left floated divs. Inside those two divs are div headers and tabled content. I want the Div headers (Hour/Minute) to stretch to the width of the tabled content, but they only do this in FF and Chrome, not IE7. IE7 is my works official browser so the one I need it to work with the most. Here is the CSS: #ui-timepicker-div { padding:0.2em; } #ui-timepicker-hours { float:left; } #ui-timepicker-minutes { margin:0 0 0 0.2em; float:left; } .ui-timepicker .ui-timepicker-header { padding:0.2em 0; } .ui-timepicker .ui-timepicker-title { line-height:1.8em; text-align:center; } .ui-timepicker table { margin:0.15em 0 0 0; font-size:.9em; border-collapse:collapse; } .ui-timepicker td { padding:1px; width:2.2em; } .ui-timepicker th, .ui-timepicker td { border:0; } .ui-timepicker td a { display:block; padding:0.2em 0.3em 0.2em 0.5em; text-align:right; text-decoration:none; } Here is the HTML (did not include tabled content): <div style="position: absolute; top: 252.667px; left: 648px; z-index: 1; display: none;" class="ui-timepicker ui-widget ui-widget-content ui-helper-clearfix ui-corner-all" id="ui-timepicker-div"> <div id="ui-timepicker-hours"> <div class="ui-timepicker-header ui-widget-header ui-helper-clearfix ui-corner-all"> <div class="ui-timepicker-title">Hour</div> </div> <table class="ui-timepicker"> </table> </div> <div id="ui-timepicker-minutes"> <div class="ui-timepicker-header ui-widget-header ui-helper-clearfix ui-corner-all"> <div class="ui-timepicker-title">Minutes</div> </div> <table class="ui-timepicker"> </table> </div> </div>

  • IE 8 Automatically Closing <header> tag

    - by djthoms
Background I am currently working on the final QA of a responsive website and I'm having an issue with IE 8 and IE 7. My client deals with government contracting so their website needs to be compatible with IE 8 and IE 7. I am using Modernizr with html5shiv built in. I am loading Modernizr in the footer of a WordPress theme that was custom built for this project. I'm not missing a doctype or any other obvious code. I am using the following scripts, all of which are loaded in the footer of WordPress: jQuery 1.10.1 Modernizr 2.6.3 (click for config) respond.js 1.3.0 superfish jQuery Waypoints 2.0.3 jQuery Waypoints Sticky 2.0.3 The Situation I'm having an issue with IE 8 automatically closing a <header> tag. First, I have used two utilities to check this issue: IETester IE 11 emulated to IE 8 w/ IE 8 User agent Here is the correct output <div class="wrapper main-header"> <header class="container"> <div class="sixteen columns alpha omega"> <div class="eight columns alpha omega logo"> <a href="http://example.com"><img src="http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/logo.png" alt="Example"></a> </div> <div class="wrapper main-navigation desktop"> <nav id="nav" class="six columns alpha omega"> ... </nav> <div class="eight columns alpha omega overlay" style="display: none;"> ... </div> <div class="two columns alpha omega menu-ss"> ... </div> </div><!-- .wrapper.main-navigation --> </div><!-- /.sixteen.columns --> </header><!--/header--> </div><!-- /.main-header --> What IE 8 is rendering: <div class="wrapper main-header"> <header class="container"></header> <div class="sixteen columns alpha omega"> <div class="eight columns alpha omega logo"> <a href="http://example.com"><img src="http://example.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/logo.png" alt="Example"></a> </div> <div class="wrapper main-navigation desktop"> <nav id="nav" class="six columns alpha omega"> ... </nav> <div class="eight columns alpha omega overlay" style="display: none;"> ... </div> <div class="two columns alpha omega menu-ss"> ... </div> </div><!-- .wrapper.main-navigation --> </div><!-- /.sixteen.columns --> </header><//header><!--/header--> </div><!-- /.main-header --> What I have Tried Loading html5shiv with IE conditional in the <head> Loading Modernizr in the <head> I have looked at these Stackoverflow questions/answers: html 5 tags foorter or header in ie 8 and ie 7 html5 not rendering header tags in ie IE 8 self closing tags automatically Any assistance with this is greatly appreciated! I would really really really like to finish this website over the weekend. I've been banging my head against a wall for the past few hours over this issue. Update Here are some images from browsershack to cut out the emulation. I tested the site virtually with Windows 7 and WIndows XP (IE 8 & IE 7). http://www.browserstack.com/screenshots/0d7c1d6dd22927c20495e67f07afe8934957b4d1

  • IE 6 dropdown selection area too narrow

    - by Cool Hand Luke UK
Hi, I have a dropdown menu with the width set to 142px however the selection area when you drop down the menu needs to be larger as it has text that exceeds this width. Firefox (and most modern browsers) is clever and extends the selection area to fit in this text. However IE 6 and unchecked newer versions of IE do not show this text and keep the selection area the same width as the dropdown unclicked. The problem lies here, how can I get IE to extend the selection area where you click the selection you want without increasing the width of the dropdown area with out the dropdown selection showing. Hope that makes sense. :D cheers (DEATH TO IE)

  • Inserting a newline into a pre tag (IE, Javascript)

    - by Itay
In IE when I insert text into a <pre> tag the newlines are ignored: <pre id="putItHere"></pre> <script> function putText() { document.getElementById("putItHere").innerHTML = "first line\nsecond line"; } </script> Using \r\n instead of a plain \n does not work. <br/> does work but inserts an extra blank line in FF, which is not acceptable for my purposes.

  • .focus() doesn't work on an input while orher attributes works

    - by Sirber
I have a classic table / thead / tbody structure, which I add a line at the end of the tbody. The line contains only an input element. The code works in Firefox 3.6 but not in Chrome v5 or IE8. I'm using jQuery 1.4.1. Does not work: $("#" + AJAX_ID).parent().find('tr:last > td:nth-child(2) > input').focus(); Does work: $("#" + AJAX_ID).parent().find('tr:last > td:nth-child(2) > input').css('background-color', 'red'); even setting an ID on the input, and using document.getElementBuId('id').focus() doesn't work. Thank you!

  • Get standard application for txt files (.NET)

    - by iDog
Possible Duplicate: Finding the default application for opening a particular file type on Windows Hello, in my application I want to open a text file, which has no .txt extension. Is there any way to get the standard application for .txt files in .NET (C#)? Sure I could use "notepad", but there might be some people (like me), who prefer another (their standard) editor. Thank you very much. Edit: The registry key "[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT]\txtfile\shell\open\command" references notepad, but that's not my standard app for txt files. How do I get the my current standard app for .txt?

  • Rails 3 and encrypted cookies with IE9

    - by user1832686
I am using encrypted cookies to pass data to my rails app. Once these cookies get set, they are being passed just fine to Chrome, Firefox, Safari (iOS and OSX version), etc. However, the cookie isn't being passed back on Win7/IE9. I'm using Ruby 1.9 and Rails 3, and using the cookies.permanent.encrypted method of setting the cookie. E.g: cookies.permanent.encrypted[:some_data] = object.some_data Any ideas about what's going on?

  • Do double forward slashes direct IE to use specific css?

    - by kjh
I have just found something very weird while developing a website. While trying to get a div element to display across the top of the screen, I noticed that I wasn't achieving a desired result in any browser except for old versions of IE. In order to test some different code, instead of deleting the faulty line, I used '//' to comment it out (I'm not really even sure if that works in css) but what happened was, the compatible browsers used the uncommented code, while IE used the code marked by '//'. here is the code: #ban-menu-div{ position:fixed;top:0; //position:relative; //<-- IE keeps the banner with rel pos while the other display:block; // browsers used fixed margin:auto; padding:0px; width:100%; text-align:center; background:black; } so basically, it seems as though // can be used to instruct newer browsers to ignore specific lines of code, and instruct older versions of IE to use it? If this is common practice someone please let me know. it sure makes developing for older browsers a hell of a lot easier

  • jQuery code works in Chrome, not in IE9

    - by Francis Ducharme
Pretty new to jQuery here, I've got a chunk of code that works OK in Chrome, but fails in IE9 (have not tried FF yet). Here's the code: var textColor = $('#navmenu-body').css('color'); textColor = textColor.slice(4); In IE9, I get an error to the effect that slice can't be called because textColor is undefined. I was not sure if it's because jQuery just can't find the #navmenu-body element or that it can't find the CSS attribute color. So I did: var j = $('#navmenu-body'); var textColor = $('#navmenu-body').css('color'); textColor = textColor.slice(4); In IE9's console, j.length returns 0. So the selector is indeed, not working Here's the #navmenu-body HTML DOM <div id="navmenu-body" class="x-panel-body x-panel-body-cssmenu x-layout-fit x-panel-body-cssmenu" style="height: 398px; left: 0px; top: 0px; width: 200px;"> </div> Do I need to do something else for IE9 support ?

  • Is there a pre-made Continuous Integration solution for .NET applications?

    - by Brett Rigby
From my perspective, we're constructing our own 'flavour' of NAnt/Ivy/CruiseControl.Net in-house and can't help but get the feeling that other dev shops are doing exactly the same work, but then everybody is finding out the same problems and pitfalls with it. I'm not complaining about NAnt, Ivy or CruiseControl at all, as they've been brilliant in helping our team of developers become more sure of the quality of their code, but it just seems strange that these tools are very popular, yet we're all re-inventing the CI-wheel. Is there a pre-made solution for building .Net applications, using the tools mentioned above?

  • Find out when all processes in (void) is done?

    - by Emil
    Hey. I need to know how you can find out when all processes (loaded) from a - (void) are done, if it's possible. Why? I'm loading in data for a UITableView, and I need to know when a Loading... view can be replaced with the UITableView, and when I can start creating the cells. This is my code: - (void) reloadData { NSAutoreleasePool *releasePool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSLog(@"Reloading data."); NSURL *urlPosts = [NSURL URLWithString:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", URL]]; NSError *lookupError = nil; NSString *data = [[NSString alloc] initWithContentsOfURL:urlPosts encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&lookupError]; postsData = [data componentsSeparatedByString:@"~"]; [data release], data = nil; urlPosts = nil; self.numberOfPosts = [[postsData objectAtIndex:0] intValue]; self.postsArrayID = [[postsData objectAtIndex:1] componentsSeparatedByString:@"#"]; self.postsArrayDate = [[postsData objectAtIndex:2] componentsSeparatedByString:@"#"]; self.postsArrayTitle = [[postsData objectAtIndex:3] componentsSeparatedByString:@"#"]; self.postsArrayComments = [[postsData objectAtIndex:4] componentsSeparatedByString:@"#"]; self.postsArrayImgSrc = [[postsData objectAtIndex:5] componentsSeparatedByString:@"#"]; NSMutableArray *writeToPlist = [NSMutableArray array]; NSMutableArray *writeToNoImagePlist = [NSMutableArray array]; NSMutableArray *imagesStored = [NSMutableArray arrayWithContentsOfFile:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"imagesStored.plist"]]; int loop = 0; for (NSString *postID in postsArrayID) { if ([imagesStored containsObject:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@.png", postID]]){ NSLog(@"Allready stored, jump to next. If that is also nil, use noImage.png, set in IB. imageData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString:[[postsArrayImgSrc objectAtIndex:loop] stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:@".jpg" withString:@".jpeg"]]]; } if (imageData != nil){ NSLog(@"imageData is NOT empty when creating file"); [fileManager createFileAtPath:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"images/%@.png", postID]] contents:imageData attributes:nil]; [writeToPlist addObject:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@.png", postID]]; } else { [writeToNoImagePlist addObject:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@", postID]]; } imageData = nil; loop++; NSLog(@"imagePlist: %@\nnoImagePlist: %@", writeToPlist, writeToNoImagePlist); } NSMutableArray *writeToAllPlist = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:writeToPlist]; [writeToPlist addObjectsFromArray:[NSArray arrayWithContentsOfFile:nowPlist]]; [writeToAllPlist addObjectsFromArray:[NSArray arrayWithContentsOfFile:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"imagesStored.plist"]]]; [writeToNoImagePlist addObjectsFromArray:[NSArray arrayWithContentsOfFile:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"noImage.plist"]]]; [writeToPlist writeToFile:nowPlist atomically:YES]; [writeToAllPlist writeToFile:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"imagesStored.plist"] atomically:YES]; [writeToNoImagePlist writeToFile:[rootPath stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"noImage.plist"] atomically:YES]; [releasePool release]; }
