• .html extension or no for SEO purposes

  I know this question has been asked before on Stack Overflow, but what I have not been able to find in the posts I've read are concrete references as to WHY one is better than the other (something I can take to my boss). So I'm working on an MVC 3 application that is basically a rewrite of the existing production application (web forms) using MVC. The current site uses a URL rewriter to rewrite "friendly" urls with HTML extensions to their ASPX counterpart. i.e. http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget.html gets rewritten to http://www.site.com/products.aspx?id=18554 We're moving away from this with the MVC site, but the powers that be still want the HTML extension on the URLs. As a developer, that just feels wrong on an MVC site. I've written a quick and dirty HttpModule that will perform a 301 redirect from the .html URL to the same URL without the .html extension and it works fine, but I need to convince management that removing the .html extension is not going to hurt SEO. I'd prefer to have this sort of friendly URL: http://www.site.com/products/18554-widget Can anyone provide information to back up my position or am I actually trying to do something that WOULD hurt SEO, in which case can you provide references on that?

I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. and now i buy a domain "newdomain.com" i want tell google webmaster to redirect old subdomain to this new domain and load trafic to my new domane. but i can't access .htccss to redirect 301. all thing that i can do is put html code in the html . now how can i do this. when i use "Change of Address" in goole webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only" . sorry for bad English.

• Does a system exist to facilitate virtual meetings and file sharing?

  I'm looking for a system that is similar to an online classroom setup but allows for virtual meeting rooms with video/audio conferencing, and of course file sharing. I'm preferring an open source solution that I can edit/tweak myself as needed, and is of course free. Ultimately, I guess what I'm looking for is something that we could possibly tweak to give our own "branded" look and feel, if possible, along with full integration within our own servers. Thus the reason I brought up open source solutions. Do you masters of the web know of such a system available? If so, do you have a preferred one that you would suggest? OR, can such a system be developed by slapping together a couple of open source projects to derive at what is desired? Thanks for sharing your expertise. (FYI - I am a developer that is comfortable with PHP and C#. I'm not experienced with Ruby or Python, but a system using them or something else is acceptable. We can figure it out I'm sure.)

• webmaster tools 500 crawl error for asp faceted navigation that does not exist

  i am getting 2,500 type 500 url errors in google webmaster tools. These pages are faceted navigation results that can not be reached by a site visitor. These pages do not exist. We are using faceted navigation with the Volusion platform (asp.net, I think). I have specified url parameters in webmaster tools so that google will not try to index anything faceted. This does not stop the errors from generating. I am concerned about how this might effect seo (bleeding page rank). I can provide additional information if needed. I am not sure how to solve this. I have started down the path of creating 301's, but having some difficulty there as well.

• Google Authorship: can I display:none for link to profile?

  I'd like to have my 'mugshot' in Google's SERPs but I couldn't care less about Google+. I don't really want to link my website to Google+ either. Can I use CSS display:none; on the link leading to my profile and still have authorship, which looks like <a href='https://plus.google.com/111823012258578917399?rel=author' rel='nofollow'>Google</a>? Will the nofollow attribute here spoil things? I don't want to lose 'link juice' on Google+ if I don't have to. Now Google should crawl only the HTML but I'm sure they'll figure out the link is not visible (perhaps it's technically even cloaking. Does anybody have experience with this situation? And do I really have to become (reasonably) active on Google+ in order for authorship to show? This answer suggests I do but I didn't read anything on that in Google's guidelines.

Is there an HTML5 standard that I can look into as an alternative to what Web Intents intended? I'm interested in how web services can be stitched together. What is the difference between each of the two approaches? It seems to work fine (sends and receives mail as expected).

• Webserver insists on opening "blog1.php" instead of "index.php"

  I'm at my wits' end. I have just ripped out a website and in the process of rebuilding everything. Previously, the 'home page' of the website is a blog, with the address "www.mydomain.com/blog1.php". After exporting everything, I deleted the whole directory, and -- based on request -- immediately create a blog/ directory. The idea is to get the blog back up as soon as possible, and temporarily redirect people accessing www.mydomain.com to the blog. Accessing the blog via http://www.mydomain.com/blog/ works. So I put in an index.php file containing a (temporary) redirect to the blog's address. The problem: The server insists on opening blog1.php instead of index.php. Even after we deleted all the files (including .htaccess). And even putting in a new .htaccess file with the single line of DirectoryIndex index.php doesn't work. The server stubbornly wants blog1.php. Now, the server is actually a webhosting, so I have no actual access to it. I have to do my work via cPanel. Currently, I work around this issue by creating blog1.php; but I really want to know why the server does not revert to opening index.php. Did I perhaps miss some important settings in the byzantine cPanel menu page?

I want to find the evidence for automatic browsing, like web robots, spiders, bots, etc. I used python robot-detection 0.2.8 for detecting robots in my log files, but I know there may be other robots (automatic programs) which have traversed through the web site but robot-detection can not identify. So I want to ask: Are there any specific clues that can be found in log files that human users do not leave but automated software would? Do they follow a specific navigation pattern? I saw some requests for favicon.ico - does this implicate that it is a automatic browsing?. I found this article and this question with some valuable points.

  Our website is new and the name is similar (only one letter different than another website) completely different type and company though. searching for xxxxxA works OK in Google and we find relatively good results. On cPanel normally you can get to the actual cPanel by visiting cpanel.hosteddomainA.com, hosteddomainA.com/cpanel or hosteddomainA.com:2082 What I would like to accomplish is to have the hosteddomains cPanel auto redirect to something like my.masterdomain.com:2082 . Doing this would allow me to adequately throw an SSL cert in my. and really offer a secure experience to my users. I know it's possible because bluehost does the same. They redirect to my.bluehost.com. Can anyone think of how to do it?

  I need an online shop with a custom interface (customizing items with Ajax, with a preview included). Writing it myself does not make too much sense (implementing all the payment options etc.), so I would like to use an existing online shop (OpenSource). I would like to build my own UI which, for example, tells the shop to add an item to its cart -- i.e. without using the online shop's native UI. More precisely, it should be an online gallery where the user can directly order an image if he likes it. The final checkout/payment page can be native again.   I've been using GoDaddy to manage about 50 domain names for a few years, but recently decided to move (probably to namecheap) because of the elephant killing incident. One GoDaddy's feature I like a lot is Consolidate, which allows you to change the expiration date of domain names for a small fee. I've searched for a while but didn't find any other registrar that provides this feature. Does anyone know if there's a registrar that allows you to change the expiration date of domains? Thanks!

  We're running freebsd + jail, and lighttpd + fastcgi + php_cgi. We changed our domain and all of a sudden we are getting SPORADIC connection closes. We recently changed our subdomain from www to shop but really there have been no other major changes. When I modified lighttpd's server.max-read-idle from default 60 to 5 the connection close message comes much more rapidly however it has not corrected the issue.

• SEO: Make hashtag links look static

  So I have a website which displays all my content vertically. (like modern websites often do these days). Thus I can't create static links to each section. I'm currently handling the scrolling with javascript. My navigation looks like this. <ul> <li><a href="#services">Services</a></li> <li><a href="#references">References</a></li> <li><a href="#blog">Blog</a></li> <li><a href="#contact">Contact</a></li> </ul> I also created 301 redirect links with htaccess. E.g. /services which leads to /#services. If I were to use them in my navigation, I'd have to trigger the scrolling with the onpopstate event. Thats not really a problem, but would searchengines accept that kind of setup ? I also created a sitemap and submitted it to google, but the indexing is still pending.
