  I hate f**g problems. I installed ubuntu just some minutes ago. It said Installation finished, you need to restart your computer. Okay when installation finished then what's there any need of a cd in the drive. So I removed it and the screen gone blank and hanged. Mouse pointer now not moving. I put cd again and forcefully restarted the computer then it came up with installation option again. I hated this. Then again I removed the cd from drive and forcefully restarted computer and now I'm on my ubuntu desktop. I want your comments. Is everything well? All seems to be normal now but I still want to talk with you. :/

• Dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 on UEFI laptop

  I have a notebook pre-installed with Windows7 and I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it following the standard installation steps in the installation image. The only problem is that on reboot the machine continues to boot Windows ignoring the presence of Ubuntu (Grub never comes up). My partition scheme is this sda1: NTFS 612MB sda2: NTFS 50GB (after resizing during Ubuntu installation. This is the main windows partition) sda4: extended sda5: ext4 /boot sda6: btrfs / I have tried Boot-repair and it didn't help. Tried rEFInd boot manager but it doesn't support NTFS partitions. I don't know what else to try. My next attempt is to try to install GRUB by hand to the MBR. Any other Ideas?

  I'm in chapter 8 of Graham Hutton's Programming in Haskell and I'm copying the code and testing it in GHC. See the slides here: http://www.cis.syr.edu/~sueo/cis352/chapter8.pdf in particular slide 15 The relevant code I've copied so far is: type Parser a = String -> [(a, String)] pih_return :: a -> Parser a pih_return v = \inp -> [(v, inp)] failure :: Parser a failure = \inp -> [] item :: Parser Char item = \inp -> case inp of [] -> [] (x:xs) -> [(x,xs)] parse :: Parser a -> String -> [(a, String)] parse p inp = p inp sat :: (Char -> Bool) -> Parser Char sat p = do x <- item if p x then pih_return x else failure I have changed the name of the return function from the book to pih_return so that it doesn't clash with the Prelude return function. The errors are in the last function sat. I have copied this directly from the book. As you can probably see p is a function from Char to Bool (e.g. isDigit) and x is of type [(Char, String)], so that's the first error. Then pih_return takes a value v and returns [(v, inp)] where inp is a String. This causes an error in sat because the v being passed is x which is not a Char. I have come up with this solution, by explicitly including inp into sat sat :: (Char -> Bool) -> Parser Char sat p inp = do x <- item inp if p (fst x) then pih_return (fst x) inp else failure inp Is this the best way to solve the issue?

• How to show errors using JSON when an update fails in Rails 2.3.5 with jQuery

  I've got in-place editing on a page in my app (using Rails 2.3.5 and jQuery). I want to know how to display an error on the page when the update fails. I'm using ajax (an XMLHttpRequest) to save an update to a Comment object. The controller has an update method like this: def update @comment = Comment.find(params[:id]) respond_to do |format| # if @comment.update_attributes!(params[:comment]) if false #deliberately forcing a fail here to see what happens format.json { render :nothing => true } else format.json { render :json => @comment.errors, :status => :unprocessable_entity } end end end In Firebug, I can see the server returns a "422" (an appropriate validation error status code). But it's a response to an XMLHttpRequest so there is no redirect to an error page. I think I actually want to do this: format.json { render :json => @comment.errors} and trigger some Javascript function that iterates through (and displays) any errors. I'm using a rails plugin http://github.com/janv/rest_in_place/ to implement the in-place editing. It doesn't appear to have any callback function to handle a failure. What are my options? Can I write some Javascript to respond to a failure condition without hacking the plugin? Do I have to hack the rest_in_place plugin to handle a failure condition? Is there a better plugin (for Rails or jQuery) that handles in-place editing, including failure conditions?

  Hi, I've a small issue here. I am using an if statement with UIAlertView and I have two situations, both result in UIAlertViews. However, in one situation, I want to dismiss just the UIAlertView, the other, I want the UIAlertView to be dismissed and view to return to root view. What I need to do is configure the backup task so that, upon completion, it sends an email notifying the client of backup success or failure. I have been able to find that task in task scheduler, and even see where I can send an email...but I cannot find a way to make the content of the email different based on success or failure of the backup. How might I do this?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Bootloader failed to install

  Sorry about the excessively long question, but I figured giving more information would be better. I recently bought a new desktop for myself, running Windows 7. It has two hard drives, and I wanted to install Ubuntu on a small partition on the second hard drive. I created 25GB "free space" in Windows and ran a LiveCD install. I wanted to select the install options myself but accidentally selected "Install alongside Windows 7," but it seemed to pick up the free space and installed itself there as I wanted it to. However, I was told that the bootloader installation had failed. I chose to "Cancel installation," leaving my computer unable to boot. I wiped my computer and reinstalled Windows. After that, I tried installing Ubuntu through Windows using WUBI, once using files from my LiveCD and once downloading everything again. Both times the install succeeded, but both times when I restarted and tried to load Ubuntu, it gave me an error - wubildr.mbr was corrupt or missing. I checked in Windows - it was indeed present on the C:\ drive. I went back to the LiveCD installation, this time going the custom options route. I assigned 16GB to an Ext4 journaling file system and 10GB to a swap file. I got the same bootloader error as before. Being prompted to select a different partition to install the bootloader to, I first tried the partition Ubuntu was installed on. A window came up saying that the install had succeeded, but a second window gave me the same error and choices as before. I went through every single option it gave me, including the Windows partition and the hard drives themselves (dev/sda, dev/sdb). Same result. I then chose to not install a bootloader. Windows still works fine, and I assume Ubuntu has installed but is unbootable. Knowing that my computer could potentially brick itself again - and, this time around, with a lot of data to lose and hassle to go through if I mess it up - I really don't want to do anything without some advice. So I'll ask this: a) Why did the bootloader fail to install? Can I fix the error and install Ubuntu fresh? b) Is there any way to get around the error, install the bootloader, and point it towards an existing installation of Ubuntu? c) Is there a quicker and easier solution I might have missed? EDIT: Thanks for the tip, AthloX. After testing the liveCD in Virtualbox with no installation problems, I looked around for some alternate bootloaders but had no success. I attempted another install, which installed the bootloader and Ubuntu just fine but bricked Windows 7. I wiped both hard disks clean, including some "System Reserved" partitions I hadn't noticed before, before re-installing Windows 7 on one hard drive and immediately afterwards installing Ubuntu on the other. Now the computer boots into Windows, but I can pop into the BIOS at startup to boot into Ubunbtu via it's bootloader, and I'm guessing it'll only take a bit of poking at the BIOS to swap the load order. • Problem with script substitution when running script

  Hi! I'm new to Linux so this probably should be an easy fix, but I cannot see it. I have a script downloaded from official sources that is used to install additional tools for fsharp but it gives me a syntax error when running it. I tried to replace ( and ) by { and } but eventually it lead me to another error so I think this is not the problem since the script works for everybody. NTFS supports metadata journaling, which, although not completely failsafe, does mitigate certain types of potential filesystem errors. Assuming an NTFS volume is protected with BitLocker, does this reduce the failure tolerance? Would a power failure during a write to an NTFS volume, that's protected with BitLocker, be more prone to corruption than on an unencrypted NTFS volume?

  Hi Gods, We have windows server 2003 with isa 2004. Our clients uses internet with proxy. We have two isa rule: order name action protocolls from/listener to condition 1. trafic ALLOW all outbound all networks all networks all users 2. FTP ALLOW FTP Server EXTERNAL/INTERNAL/Local host 10.1.1.1 So we have to "bann" a few webpage (like facebook, youtube...etc...), so we make a new rule 0. banned DENY HTTP internal denied pages all users In the denied pages we have the *.facebook.com domain set. After we enable this rule, the entire internet slows down. The banning rule works well, redirect to an internal site, but the other sites.... If i open a page..it normally takes 3-10 sec to load, but after this rule this time is: 2-4 minutes. • Looking for Hard Drive Health Monitoring software

  I am aware that the current standard method of drive redundancy and backups would be a better solution, but I would be interested if there was a software that could be installed on workstation computers that could monitor hard drive health and give a warning if the drive looks like a failure is imminent. I have tried hdd health but it does not give me very useful information. I am not interested in drive space, just want a heads up before a drive failure. Anyone know anything like this?

  I'm currently working with the ASP.NET login control. I can set a custom failure text and I can add a literal on the page where the failure text is displayed if the login fails. I also have a validation summary on the page in which I collect all errors that can occur (for the moment it just validates that the user has entered a login name and a password. It would be really nice if I could add the failure text of the login control as an item in the validation summary, but I'm not sure if this is even possible? • problem with customized destination path

  during installation i'm giving an option to user to change the default installation dir. Once this is done, installation goes fine and installs in the user specific location. But when i use INSTALLDIR to modify few registry entries, INSTALLDIR is having old, default values but not the user specified. This is happening to only one package and i couldn't find the reason. Any help will save my time. i use installshield 12 on win2k3 x86. ~calvin
