  • Was it necessary to build this site in ASP.NET ?

    From what I'm told, the whole StackOverflow/StackExchange 'stack' is based on Microsoft's ASP.NET. SO and the SE sites are probably the most complex that I visit on a regular basis. There's a lot going on in every page - lots of different boxes, pulling data from different places and changing dynamically and responding to user interaction. And the sites work very smoothly, despite the high traffic. My question is, could this have been achieved using a different platform/framework? Does ASP.NET lend itself to more complex projects where other web frameworks would strain and falter? Or is the choice pretty incidental?

  • VB.NET Application which can compile and run C programs

    These days I'm working on a VB.NET application which can be used to edit, compile and run C programs. Can someone tell me how I can call a cl.exe process from within my VB program and also that how do I run the program in the console widow itself. Presently I have only the editor ready. With that one can type in a program and save it with a ".c" extension. Now there are 2 buttons on my form - "Compile" and "Run". When the user clicks on the "Compile" button, the program should be passed to the cl.exe process and the errors should be displayed in another textbox or the DOS(black screen itself). And when the user clicks on the "Run" button, the ".exe" file which just got created should get executed.

  • SharePoint Saturday DC 2010 Slides, Demo Scripts, and Pictures

    Wow! This past weekend I attended SharePoint Saturday Washington DC (SPSDC) which was quite an event to say the least.  For those unfamiliar, SharePoint Saturday is a community driven event where various speakers gather to present at a FREE conference on all topics related to SharePoint.  This made my fifth SharePoint Saturday attended and fourth I’ve spoken at.  SPSDC was a bit different than most SharePoint Saturdays mostly due to the scale of it.  We had almost 950 attendees, over 80 speakers presenting close to 90 sessions, and dozens of sponsors.  A big thanks goes out to the organizers of this event.  They put in a lot of hard work and time to pull this event off and should be very proud of the end result.      For SPSDC I presented “The Power of PowerShell + SharePoint 2007”.  I want to thank all of the attendees of my session for coming and asking some great questions.  Below you can find the slides and demo scripts for this session.  I also took some photos throughout the day (not as many as usual since so much going on) so check them out.  If you have any follow up questions feel free to drop me a line in the comments or the contact link at the top of the site.   Slides and Scripts Click here for the demo scripts and slides posted on my SkyDrive.   • How to add Transactions with a DataSet created using the Add Connection Wizard?

    I have a DataSet that I have added to my project where I can Insert and Add records using the Add Query function in Visual Studio 2010, however I want to add transactions to this, I have found a few examples but cannot seem to find one that works with these. I know I need to use the SQLClient.SQLTransaction Class somehow. I used the Add New Data Source Wizard and added the Tables/View/Functions I need, I just need an example using this process such as How to get the DataConnection my DataSet has used. Assuming all options have been set in the wizard and I am only using the pre-defined adapters and options asked for in this wizard, how to I add the Transaction logic to my Database. For example I have a DataSet called ProductDataSet with the XSD created for this, I have then added my Stock table as a Datasource and Added an AddStock method with a wizard, this also if a new item calls an AddItem method, if either of these fails I want to rollback the AddItem and AddStock in this case.

  • Design mode in Visual studio 2010 sp1 beta

    in MVC3 razor we found that their is no way to watch the design in Visual studio as well we can see aspx file by going to design mode. their is a little trick to solve this issue first is that if you have Expression web or Vs 2008 then open the file on them how see here in expression web 4 you need to add the extension .cshtml and open them as html as we open other. in Visual studio 2008 you need to add the extension .cshtml and set them open as html. well their is no big trouble if design not worked. but in some case when you need to get this issue solved this need to be work for configuration do this: Expression Web 4 > tools > application options > configure editor > click on new extension icon show in exact left put the cshtml in the window they show you and choose expression web [open as html] after that you can see the design in expression web. by default Expression web not have cshtml as known extension so you need to do that to add them because without it they never handle cshtml file and refer them to Visual studio. after setting this you  EW4 open the cshtml file as html and show you design in design mode. in Visual studio 2008 you can use same trick to solve this issue just follow this step > options > text editors > file extension put cshtml in textbox and set the option html editor from dropdown and click on add and ok this will open your cshtml file as html.

  • Subsonic and the VB.net 2005 interop toolkit

    I have an application I am converting over from vb6 to vb.net 2.0/3.5. Using Subsonic 2.2 and the vb.net Interop Toolkit 2005. Cannot seem to get the .net form using subsonic to work inside the interop environment. It keeps saying it cannot find the subsonic service provider in the app.config. But I know it is there. Has anyone used these two toolkits together successfully? Will subsonic even work inside the interop environment in that way? Thanks in advance!

    I've had this problem numerous times when trying to install software in WINE, now I've come to the point where I have to install something in WINE. Installing the program works fine, as soon as I go to run it however I get the message Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime. Runtime Error I have installed the above package using wine tricks, but still nothing. Have goggled to try and find if I am missing Dependencies or anything obvious, but after that I am stuck.     We have several .NET applications developed in .NET 3.5 (Windows services, web applications, and WCF services) in different servers. I'd like to migrate to .NET 4.0 and use VS.NET 2010. Does VS.NET 2010 compiles to .NET 3.5 to avoid full simultaneous migration, being able to stop using VS.NET 2008 but maintaining some applications in the previous version? Can I uninstall the .NET < 4.0 runtime and have only .NET 4.0 in my servers? Does it run applications compiled to previous framework versions?
