  • Designing a different kind of tag cloud.

    - by animuson
    Rather than having a bunch of links that are all different sizes, I want all of my tags to be the same size. However, my goal is to minimize the amount of space required to make the cloud, aka minimizing the number of lines used. Take this example: Looks like any normal tag cloud. However, look at all that extra space around the 'roughdiamond' tag, which could be filled in by other tags like 'stone' down near the bottom, which could effectively eliminate an entire extra line from the cloud. How would I go about getting the words to fill in whatever space possible above them before starting a new line? I'm not talking about reorganizing them to find the absolute minimum number of lines required. If I was going through the list in the image, 'pendant', 'howlite', and 'igrice' would go to line 1 filling it up, 'roughdiamond' would go to line 2 because line 1 is full, 'tourmaline' would go to line 3 because it can't fit on lines 1 or 2, same with 'emberald', but 'pearl' would go to line 2 because it can fit there since there is extra space. I figure there would probably be some way of doing this in CSS that would simply cause the links to collapse into any fillable space it can fit in to.

  • Why is this one div container blocking the other from floating right?

    - by user2824289
    I know the answer is very simple, it's probably one little CSS property, but I've tried to find the solution without asking it here, no luck.. There are two div containers within a div container, and they aren't playing nice. The one is positioned to float right in the upper righthand corner of the parent div, and it won't let any other container float to the right of it. I tried display:inline and display:inline-block but no luck... Here's the code, though something tells me the answer is so easy you won't need it!: The parent div, the upper righthand corner div, and the poor div trying to float right: #um-home-section4 { width:100%; height:300px; background-color: green; } #um-title-right { float:right; width:500px; height:50px; margin-right:20px; margin-top:20px; background-color: fuchsia; } #take-me-there { float:right; margin-top:240px; margin-right:0px; height:50px; width:100px; background-color: gray; } <div id="um-home-section4"> <div id="um-title-right"></div> <div id="take-me-there"></div> </div>

  • Background image is not displaying in IE6 and IE7

  • CSS3: Stripe table with multiple <tbody> elements

    - by xyz
    Hello, I've got a table with multiple <tbody> elements. At a given time, only one <tbody> is displayed, or all of them are displayed. I currently use this CSS3 code to stripe the table. table tr:nth-child(even) { background: #efefef; } When a single <tbody> element is shown, everything is (obviously) fine, but when multiple <tbody> elements are shown the CSS rules apply to each one separately, and each <tbody> has its own "stripes system". Together the stripes may or may not look consistent, depending on the number of rows. <tbody> <tr> [ODD] <tr> [EVEN] <tr> [ODD] </tbody> <tbody> <tr> [ODD] <tr> [EVEN] </tbody> ... Would I absolutely have to use JavaScript (...jQuery) to fix this?

  • Disabled input text color

    - by Incidently
    Hi The simple HTML below displays differently in Firefox and WebKit-based browsers (I checked in Safari, Chrome and iPhone). In Firefox both border and text have the same color (#880000), but in Safari the text gets a bit lighter (as if it had some transparency applied to it). Can I somehow fix this (remove this transparency in Safari)? UPDATE: Thank you for your answers. I don't need this for my work anymore (instead of disabling, I'm replacing input elements with styled div elements), but I'm still curious why this happens and if there is any way to control this behaviour ... <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title></title> <style type="text/css"> input:disabled{ border:solid 1px #880000; background-color:#ffffff; color:#880000; } </style> </head> <body> <form action=""> <input type="text" value="disabled input box" disabled="disabled"/> </form> </body> </html>

  • Floats not clearing properly in IE - how to fix?

    - by Stomped
    I've been banging my head for about an hour now, and I've distilled the problem down to the simplest example I can think of that shows the problem. The CSS/HTML <style> #T div { float: left; } ._b { clear: left; } </style> <div id='T'> <div class='_a'>*</div> <div class='_b'>*</div> <div class='_c'>*</div> <div class='_d'>*</div> </div> IE7 *** * FF, Chrome, Opera * *** The result in FF/Chrome/Opera is what I'd expect. There's no adding more mark-up to fix this and I'm absolutely befuddled on to how to make it work properly in IE. It gets really ugly when you have say, 3 all on a row to themselves and then 3 meant to be on the same line -- the extra 2 end up on the first row. I really hope someone knows the work-around for this.

  • IE 7 issues: Super simple page - TD height not taking effect

    - by Anthony
    This is my markup: <!DOCTYPE HTML> <html> <head> <title>Test title</title> <style type="text/css"> * { margin:0px auto; padding:0px; } html,body { height:100%; width:100%; } </style> </head> <body> <table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"> <tr> <td style="height:55px;background:#CCC;" valign="top"> <h1>Header</h1> </td> </tr> <tr> <td valign="top"> Content @RenderBody() </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height:85px;background:#CCC;" valign="bottom"> Footer </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> Can anybody tell me why td height is not taking effect? This same markup works in IE9. Is it due to the HTML5 doctype?

  • Add Hover display for table cell

    - by Jake
    I have a table, but it is not in a list format, meaning not a column/row format. I look for specific cells to add a hover event that displays a description of the cell. $("#TableID td").hover(function(){ //ifCellThatIWant $(this).append("<span>Message that was brought in</span>"); }, function(){ $(this).children().remove(); }); The problem is right now is that the hover displays a span(with info. inside) that I used jquery to append the span to the cell when mouseover, which expands the cell, which is an effect that I don't like or want. I'm Trying to have an out of the table look,but still be by the cell that triggered the event; because if the span has a lot of info. in it, expanding the cell dynamically will start to look pretty nasty. Also will help if I had some type of css direction on how will I make the display for the mouseover "description" span look nice. My mind thought is that a way to accomplish what I want is giver the appended span the position of my mouse cursor when hover, but not sure if its the right approach or what the syntax would look like.

  • Matching up text in 2 different columns in a table?

    - by user297663
    Hey guys, I have recently been working on a pastebin script (for fun) and I've come across a problem that I can't seem to solve in CSS. I have a table with 2 columns. 1 column is used to display the line numbers and the 2nd column is used to display the code. I can't seem to get the numbers match up with the lines in the code so it looks all weird (example: www.zamnproductions.com/paste.php?id=32). Take a look at my code (the snippet): <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> td.num { vertical-align: top; } td.numbers { display:table-cell; padding:1px; vertical-align: top; line-height:25px; } td.code { display:table-cell; vertical-align: top; line-height:20px; } #hide { display:none; } #leftcontent { position: absolute; left:10px; top:119px; width:200px; background:#fff; border:0px solid #000; } #centercontent { background:#fff; margin-left: 199px; margin-right:199px; border:0px solid #000; voice-family: "\"}\""; voice-family: inherit; margin-left: 201px; margin-right:201px; } htmlbody #centercontent { margin-left: 202px; margin-right:201px; } Here is the part where the table is made: listNumbers($_GET['id']); ? viewCode($_GET['id']); ?

  • style ul with width to accommodate items

    - by Tallmaris
    Sorry I could not find a similar answer on SO. I have the following markup (generated by jquery ui autocomplete but this is not the issue here) <ul style="z-index: 1; display: block; border: thin solid red; width: 200px;"> <li> <a> <div style="font-size: 0.85em;"> <span style="float: right; padding-left: 10px; color: gray;"> United Kingdom </span> <span style="">text text text text text</span> </div> </a> </li> </ul> As you can see in this fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/fVr8P/2/ the text wraps because the width is limited and the country span is "floating". What I would like would be for the width to enlarge to accommodate the full length, but if I put width: auto; it will expand to 100%. Background The ul is of course coming from jquery ui autocomplete. I am styling the results a bit using the autocomplete.html extension. Problem is that everything is working ok in firefox an chrome because the autocomplete is set to the correct width on creation. in IE this does not happen (width is too small) so the text wraps. I am hping to come to a simple css only solution, without fiddling around in jQuery.

  • How to use vertical-align: middle; properly?

    - by Andrew
    I want to have my list (nav) align to the center of an image (logo). I tried using vertical-align: middle;, but I couldn't get it to work when I floated the images left and right. Here's my code: HTML: <div id="head"> <img id="logo" src="logo.png" /> <ul id="nav"> <li><a href="#">Item 1</a></li> <li><a href="#">Item 2</a></li> <li><a href="#">Item 3</a></li> </ul> </div> CSS: #head { margin-top: 2px; width: 100%; } #logo { float: left; } ul#nav { float: right; } ul#nav li { display: inline; list-style-type: none; } I took all the vertical-align: middle;'s from where I put them (I tested it in each element, even though it was only supposed to be applied to #logo, from what I've read.) Anyways, any help would be appreciated.

  • How to create two columns on a web page?

    - by Roman
    I want to have two columns on my web page. For me the simples way to do that is to use a table: <table> <tr> <td> Content of the first column. </td> <td> Content of the second column. </td> </tr> </table> I like this solution because, first of all, it works (it gives exactly what I want), it is also really simple and stable (I will always have two columns, no matter how big is my window). It is easy to control the size and position of the table. However, I know that people do not like the table-layout and, as far as I know, they use div and css instead. So, I would like also to try this approach. Can anybody help me with that? I would like to have a simple solution (without tricks) that is easy to remember. It also needs to be stable (so that it will not accidentally happen that one column is under another one or they overlap or something like that).

  • Figure and figcaption figures shrink images

    - by Why Not
    I'm attempting to use the figure and figcaption tags to varying success. Someone suggested a great CSS method to get rid of the figure margin and also link up the caption with the image. The problem: all images shrink to an extremely small size. Not sure how to rectify this. These are user-submitted images using Django so they vary in size. But currently, using these fixes, all of these shrink with a caption that does fit the image but defeats the purpose as it results in a tiny image with a caption with an even width. {% if story.pic %} <h2>Image</h2> <figure> <img class="image"src="{{ story.pic.url }}" alt="some_image_alt_text"/> {% if story.caption %} <figcaption>{{story.caption}}</figcaption> {% endif %} </figure> {% endif %} figure {margin:0; display:table; width:1px;} figcaption {display:table-row;}

  • Issues with an image link

    - by user1462362
    Two days ago I spontaneously bought myself a domain. The day before that, I hardly even knew what a domain really was. Since then, I've been trying to teach myself HTML for the very first time. Basically what I'm trying to say is, I'm very new - and will probably be poor in my explanations. I just succeeded in making an 'image-button', sorta. It's where I make a button-like image and then use it as navigation on my website (just like a regular link). My issue is that the link 'border' itself is bigger than the image, so you can press an inch outside the image itself and it will work. How do I make the invisible link 'border' the same size as the button? This is my site: http://www.djeveln.com On the test page (djeveln.com/test) is where I test things. There's the button I'm talking about, in case you can't understand my explanation very well. Here's my HTML: Here is the CSS I use for the image position and size: img.TestButton { /* Dette linker til selve størrelsen av knappen (bildet)*/ position: absolute; width: 100px; height: 75px; top: 400px; right: 250px; } Hope you can help me! :P

  • How to control div on hover:?

    - by AAA
    I found a way to change the background color of a menu option upon hover. However, when you hover an option, it takes up some wide space that moves all the other options to the right, its sort of annoying, i want to maintain a consistent space, so if i hover, only the color should change, not the option moving to the right. Sort of the way facebook has its menu options. Below is the code: <div id="menu"> <a href="/hello" id="option">home</a> <a href="/hello" id="option">profile</a> <a href="/hello" id="option">account</a> <a href="/hello" id="option">settings</a> <a href="/hello" id="option">extra</a> <a href="/hello" id="option">logout</a> </div> CSS: div#menu { margin-left: 630px; margin-top:-20px; } option { margin-left: 20px; } #option:hover{ background: #3F2327; padding: 10px; }
