  • In what specific areas has F# proven more applicable than C#?

    - by Peter McGrattan
Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#. EDIT: Altered title with the intent of reducing perceived ambiguity.

  • How to create symbolic links in Windows?

    - by guillermooo
Related: In .NET, how do I Create a Junction in NTFS, as opposed to a Symlink? I've tried Winbolic (Windows XP), but i can't get it to work the way I want. Am I wrong here?: If I create a symbolic link within a folder in my %PATH%, the referenced directory should work as if it had actually been added to %PATH%, right?

  • For distributed applications, which to use, ASIO vs. MPI?

    - by Rhubarb
I am a bit confused about this. If you're building a distributed application, which in some cases may perform parallel operations (although not necessarily mathematical), should you use ASIO or something like MPI? I take it MPI is a higher level than ASIO, but it's not clear where in the stack one would begin.

  • What do you call this functional language feature?

    - by Jimmy
ok, embarrassing enough, I posted code that I need explained. Specifically, it first chains absolute value and subtraction together, then tacks on a sort, all the while not having to mention parameters and arguments at all, because of the presense of "adverbs" that can join these functions "verbs" What (non-APL-type) languages support this kind of no-arguments function composition (I have the vague idea it ties in strongly to the concepts of monad/dyad and rank, but its hard to get a particularly easy-to-understand picture just from reading Wikipedia) and what do I call this concept?

  • Using function arguments to dynamically generate a query

    - by Varun
I am working on an issue management system, developed in PHP/MySQL. It requires search functionality, where the user will mention the search parameters and based on these parameters the system will return the result set. To solve this I am trying to write a function and all the user selected parameters are passed as arguments. Based on the arguments I will dynamically generate the query. Sample Query: select * from tickets inner join ticket_assigned_to on tickets.id=ticket_assigned_to.ticket_id where tickets.project_id= in ('') and tickets.status in ('') and ticket_assigned_to.user_id in ('') and tickets.reporter_user_id='' and tickets.operator_user_id in ('') and tickets.due_date between '' and '' and tickets.ts_created between '' and ''; I also need to handle cases where the arguments can be ORed or ANDed in the query. For example: select * from tickets inner join ticket_assigned_to on tickets.id=ticket_assigned_to.ticket_id where tickets.project_id= in ('') and tickets.status in ('') or tickets.due_date = '' or tickets.ts_created between '' and ''; I am also planning to use the same function at other places in the project also. Like to display all the tickets of a user or all tickets created between given dates and so on... How to handle this situation? Should I go with a single function which handles all this or numerous small functions? Need guidance here.

  • C++ String manipulation isn't making sense to me...

    - by Andrew Bolster
I am trying some of the Stanford SEE courses online to learn some new languages; this particular assignment has to do with removing substrings from strings. What I've got so far is below, but if text = "hello hello" and remove ="el", it gets stuck in a loop, but if i change text to text = "hello hllo", it works, making me think I'm doing something obviously stupid. There is a stipulation in the assignment not to modify the incoming strings, and instead to return a new string. string CensorString1(string text, string remove){ string returned; size_t found=0, lastfound=0; found = (text.substr(lastfound,text.size())).find(remove); while (string::npos != found ){ returned += text.substr(lastfound, found); lastfound = found + remove.size(); found = (text.substr(lastfound,text.size())).find(remove); } returned += text.substr(lastfound, found); return returned; } Guidance would be appreciated :-) Thanks

  • Is there server-side code which is not cross browser compatible?

    - by Ygam
Was there a case in any server-side language where a code did not work in a browser while it did work in the rest? I am asking this because I can't imagine such a scenario because server-side code runs in the server, not in the browser but I have seen discussions where, as said, there were "server-side browser compatibility issues". I can't seem to recall where I have read it. Thanks in advance :)

  • Function Composition in C++

    - by Channel72
There are a lot of impressive Boost libraries such as Boost.Lambda or Boost.Phoenix which go a long way towards making C++ into a truly functional language. But is there a straightforward way to create a composite function from any 2 or more arbitrary functions or functors? If I have: int f(int x) and int g(int x), I want to do something like f . g which would statically generate a new function object equivalent to f(g(x)). This seems to be possible through various techniques, such as those discussed here. Certainly, you can chain calls to boost::lambda::bind to create a composite functor. But is there anything in Boost which easily allows you to take any 2 or more functions or function objects and combine them to create a single composite functor, similar to how you would do it in a language like Haskell?

  • Android HTTP Connection

    - by Ubersoldat
Can anybody tell my why this doesn't work in the Android emulator? From the browser I have access and the server is internal. All I can think of is that I'm missing some configuration on my app so it can access the network layer. try { InetAddress server = Inet4Address.getByName("thehost"); //Doesn't work either //or InetAddress server2 = Inet4Address.getByAddress(new String("192.168.1.30").getBytes()); if(server.isReachable(5000)){ Log.d(TAG, "Ping!"); } Socket clientsocket = new Socket(server, 8080); } catch (UnknownHostException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Server Not Found"); } catch (IOException e) { Log.e(TAG, "Couldn't open socket"); } Throws an UnknownHostException Thanks

  • design pattern tools to use?

    - by ajsie
i have noticed that every area has some tools you can use to make things easier. eg. css = dreamweaver doctrine/propel = orm designer // you dont have to hardcore code schemas manually and remembering all the syntax/variables mysql = mysql workbench // the same etc. in this way you get aided and dont have to type things the hard way, and can learn the structure, but then use GUI tools to help you develop faster. now i'm learning design patterns (singleton, factory, command, memento etc) and im wondering if there are some kind of tools you can use that will help you develop faster. i dont know exactly what tools i'm trying to find, just helping me when coding with design patterns (schema drawings? references?) are there any?

  • scheme2lisp::define function and pass it as parameter

    - by Stas
Hi! Im need translate some code from scheme to common lisp. Now I have something like this (defun sum (term a next b) (if (> a b) 0 (+ (term a) (sum term (next a) b)))) (defun sum-int (a b) (defun (ident x) x ) (sum ident a 1+ b)) But it doesn't interprete with out errors. * - DEFUN: the name of a function must be a symbol, not (IDENT X) Help me plese. • Is it possible to have more than P2P on iPhone with Bluetooth

    - by Ricardo Ferreira
Hi all, This seems like a straightforward google search answer, but after a while, I still can't be 100% sure of this. I've found Z2Live (http://www.z2live.com/), which is basically a layer above GameKit and they too use only P2P with Bluetooth. So I just want to be sure if I can only have P2P with Bluetooth or if I can have like 4 iPhones all connected to a server (who will also be a client) using Bluetooth. Thanks in advance.

  • Generate combinations by order and fixed length.

    - by roconmachine
    Suppose there is array main[] = [a,b,c,....z]; a[] = [a1,a2,a3,....] , b[] = [b1,b2,b3,....] and so on. So if we generate combination in main.length of ordered then it looks like ..... a1 b1 c1, a1 b1 c2, a1 b1 c3 ...... a1 b2 c1, a1 b3 c1, ..... a2 b1 c1, a3 b1 c1, ..... and total count will be a.length * b.length * c.length ........ = ? So write a code in any language to generate those combination. all the best. alex

  • Do you like languages that let you put the "then" before the "if"?

    - by Matt Hamilton
I was reading through some C# code of mine today and found this line: if (ProgenyList.ItemContainerGenerator.Status != System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.GeneratorStatus.ContainersGenerated) return; Notice that you can tell without scrolling that it's an "if" statement that works with ItemContainerGenerator.Status, but you can't easily tell that if the "if" clause evaluates to "false" the method will return at that point. Realistically I should have moved the "return" statement to a line by itself, but it got me thinking about languages that allow the "then" part of the statement first. If C# permitted it, the line could look like this: return if (ProgenyList.ItemContainerGenerator.Status != System.Windows.Controls.Primitives.GeneratorStatus.ContainersGenerated); This might be a bit "argumentative", but I'm wondering what people think about this kind of construct. It might serve to make lines like the one above more readable, but it also might be disastrous. Imagine this code: return 3 if (x > y); Logically we can only return if x y, because there's no "else", but part of me looks at that and thinks, "are we still returning if x <= y? If so, what are we returning?" What do you think of the "then before the if" construct? Does it exist in your language of choice? Do you use it often? Would C# benefit from it?

  • How to get spacing between characters printed using TextOut ?

    - by life-warrior
    I'm trying to calcuate size of each cell (containing text like "ff" or "a0"), so that 32 cells will fit into window by width. However, charWidth*2 doesn' represent the width of a cell, since it doesn't take spacing between characters in the account. How can I obtain size of a font so that 32 cells each is two chars like "ff" fit exactly into window's client area ? Curier is fixed-width font. RECT rect; ::GetClientRect( hWnd, &rect ); LONG charWidth = (rect.right-rect.left)/BLOCK_SIZE/2-2; int oldMapMode = ::SetMapMode( hdc, MM_TEXT ); HFONT font = CreateFont( charWidth*2, charWidth, 0, 0, FW_DONTCARE, FALSE, FALSE, FALSE, DEFAULT_CHARSET, OUT_OUTLINE_PRECIS, CLIP_DEFAULT_PRECIS, CLEARTYPE_QUALITY, FF_ROMAN, _T("Courier") ); HGDIOBJ oldFont = ::SelectObject( hdc, font ); for( int i = 0; i < BLOCK_SIZE; ++i ) { CString str; str.Format( _T("%.2x"), (unsigned char)*(g_memAddr+i) ); SIZE size; ::TextOut( hdc, (size.cx+2)*i+1, 1, str, _tcslen((LPCTSTR)str) ); }
