• New Packt Books: APEX & JRockit

    I have received these 2 ebooks from Packt Publkishing and I am currently reviewing them. Both of them look great so far.   Oracle Application Express 3.2 - The Essentials and More First of all, I have to mention that I am new to APEX. I was interested on this product which is a development tool for Web applications on the Oracle Database. As I support JDeveloper and ADF, which are products that work very closely with the Oracle Database and are a rapid development tool as well, it is always interesting and useful to know complementary tools. APEX looks very useful and the book includes many working examples. A more complete review of this book is coming soon. Further information about this book can be seen at Packt.   Oracle JRockit: The Definitive Guide Many of our Oracle Coherence customers run their caches and clusters using JRockit. This JVM has helped us to solve lots of Service Requests. It is a really reliable, fast and stable JVM. It works great on both development and production environments with big amounts of data, concurrency, multi-threading and many other factors that can make a JVM crash. I must also mention JRockit Mission Control (JRMC), which is a great tool for management and monitoring. I really recommend it. As a matter of fact, some months ago, I created a document entitled "How to Monitor Coherence-Based Applications using JRockit Mission Control" (Doc Id 961617.1) on My Oracle Support. Also, the JRockit Runtime Analyzer (JRA) and it successor of newer versions, the JRockit Flight Recorder (JFR) are deeply reviewed. This book contains very clear and complete information about all this and more. • Should I convert my AAC M4A files to MP3?

  Due to Apple, I have a large majority of my music files in the AAC M4A format. They do NOT have DRM so I don't have to worry about that. I'm getting tired of Apple products and really want to switch to a different brand player (and something more compatible with Linux). It appears most MP3 players support...well...MP3 and not AAC. Should I convert my library to be free of Apple and open to other players? Is this a lossless conversion? Can it be lossless? If I will lose quality, I'm not interested. Am I even doing the right thing? AAC is the better format, but I'm not seeing a lot of support for it yet. I'll be honest and say that I need some education in this department. Any helpful advice is most welcome.

• Can Foswiki be used as a distributed Redmine replacement? [closed]

  I am quite familiar with and love using git, among other reasons due to its distributed nature. Now I'd like to set up some similarly distributed (FOSS) Project Management software with features similar to what Redmine offers, such as Issue & time tracking, milestones Gantt charts, calendar git integration, maybe some automatic linking of commits and issues Wiki (preferably with Mathjax support) Forum, news, notifications Multiple Projects However, I am looking for a solution that does not require a permanently accesible server, i.e. like in git, each user should have their own copy which can be easily synchronized with others. However it should be possible to not have a copy of every Project on every machine. Since trac uses multiple instances for multiple projects anyway, I was considering using that, but I neither know how well it adapts to simply giting the database itself (which would be be easiest way to handle the distribution due to git being used anyway), nor does it include all of Redmine's feature. After checking http://www.wikimatrix.org for Wikis with integrated tracking system and RCS support, and filtering out seemingly stale project, the choices basically boil down to Foswiki, TWiki and Ikiwiki. The latter doesn't seem to offer as many usability features, and in the TWiki vs Foswiki issue I tend to the latter. Finally, there is Fossil, which starts from the other end by attempting to replace git entirely and tracking itself. I am however not too comfortable with the thought of replacing git, and Fossil's non-SCM features don't seem to be as developed. Now before I invest too much time when someone else might already have tried this, I basically have two questions: Are there crucial features of Project Management software like Redmine that Foswiki does not provide even with all the extensions available? How to set Foswiki up to use git instead of the perl RcsLite?

• How to enable raid on Gigabyte G33M-S2L?

  I'd like to set up RAID-1 on my Gigabyte G33M-S2L motherboard and for this reason I purchased two 1T hard drives. According to SiSoft Sandra the motherboard does support RAID but it is disabled. I looked everywhere in BIOS even upgraded it to the most recent version but found nothing that would have said "RAID" and the operating system I wish to install sees the two HDDs, not just a RAIDed one. What could be the problem? Does my motherboard support RAID (as the diagnostic tool claims) or do I need to buy a RAID card?

• Ubuntu 14.04 VPS won't boot the latest kernel on XEN

  I have a XEN VPS and it's been running Ubuntu for some years now. AUtomatic security upgrades are on and I've manually upgraded it continously and also done releas-upgrades whenever there's been a new release. All has been working great! But now, after upgradeing to 14.04 LTS, the VPS won't boot the latest kernel (3.13.0-24) even though it's set to default. It always failback to 3.2.0-60 and for some reason the VPS seams very unresponsive, compared the before. The support wrote in a ticket something about compiling my own kernel, with pvops enabled, but I'm not sure how to do that, or why I should compile my own kernel. Doesn't Ubuntu support to be run on a XEN host?

• Since a few days, Dropbox stopped syncing

  Theres a new problem with nautilus-dropbox and is the worst for a service like Dropbox: stopped syncing and their tech support don't believe their users. The problem is: start dropbox it downloads index creates folders start to download files stop downloading files or the speed is like 0.3k/seg even deleting everything doesn't work, even syncing a single folder with a few files, not even configuring a different limit speed or let all your bandwith, nothing works for me and i have found many users with the same problem. it's strange, i have two computers with ubuntu 14.04 and one with windows 7, and in one of the linux machines it works fine, but not in the other one. Both of them are x64. The answers from the tech support starts with "delete everything and reinstall" to "you may be blocking port 443", yeah, sure (and if i do that half of internet dissapears, idiot), but nothing works. Someone has some idea? i cant find any log file (at least a text log file like in /var/log) to understand what is dropbox doing and what is not working. • Building a DVR system for use with custom windows application (video analytics)

  Is there a good PCIe DVR capture card that has at least 4 channels as well as the hardware encoding? It would have to have decent driver support in Windows xp or windows 7. I have looked at various video capture cards as well as an integrated video capture card/motherboard from Huperlabs. But so far I have not found one with a decent review and that has good driver support that I can verify. A really small card would be nice because I am trying to get a fairly small form factor. Huperlabs stuff is pretty awesome but they are slow to get back to me and they bundle their analytics software with the hardware (extra cost for nothing) The dvr is being used for security.

• #mvvmlight V4 update for Win8 RTM

  With Windows 8 RTM out of the doors (at least for some of us), it was also time to create an update to MVVM Light. I selected the V4 RTM to do this (V4.0.23).This RTM version was released a few weeks ago with no much bells and whistles because I was just too busy to write much about it. Now after some vacation, I will resume blogging on all my favorite topics including of course MVVM Light. Upgrade Upgrading the installations should not require an ununistall, so try to simply run the MSI downloaded from the Download section at http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/. Should you encounter any issue, try to uninstall the old version first following the steps at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/cleaning/. Upgrading current apps from Win8 RP to Win8 RTM I didn’t recompile the assemblies of MVVM Light, so if you had a version running with V4.0.23 on Windows 8 RP, you should be able to use the same DLLs on Windows 8 RTM. If you were using earlier versions however, I would recommend doing an upgrade. I noticed a warning regarding the signing certificate. It is due to the PFX key which appears to be outdated after the upgrade to Windows 8 RTM. I solved this warning by replacing the old PFX key with a new one I copied from a new project. The warning did not cause the build to fail though. About MVVM Light V4 RTM The RTM is finalizing quite a lot of issues. The change log is available at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/installing/changes/. There are some issues that are either still open or that popped up since then, and I am working on V4.1 to be released in the next few weeks. • Backup Exec 12.5 or 2010? [closed]

  Backup Exec 2010 has just dropped, and I'm about to implement a new BEWS infrastructure, complete with CALs and new central servers. When I specced this up last year, I ignored 2010 and focused on Backup Exec 12.5, since it's a mature product. In previous experience, major released of BE had numerous technical issues and seemed to improve significantly at the first service pack. However, our refresh cycle on the backup infrastructure is slow, the main driver usually being lack of support for some new server type (in this case, ESX has driven our current upgrade need). With this in mind, I'm wondering if Backup Exec 2010 should be my first choice, as it'll last longer under current support than 12.5, which will approach EOL soon. Has anyone got any perspective they could add to this? Right now, I'm leaning towards biting the bullet and going with 2010.

• Getting my brother MFC-J825DW working as a network scanner

  I've been attempting to set up my new brother multi-function device to work as a printer and scanner using the following steps. It is connected to the network as a LAN device, not directly connected to my ubuntu machine. Downloaded the lpr driver and cupswrapper driver from Brother support. (Select the deb packages, not the rpms). Followed the instructions to install the lpr driver. Followed the instructions to install the cupswrapper driver. After this point I was able to successfully perform a test print, so the printer part is working. So far I haven't had much luck getting the scanner working. This is what I've tried: Downloaded the brscan4 and scan-key-tool deb packages from brother support. Followed the instructions for installing the scanner driver for network. Followed the instructions for installing scan-key-tool. However when I tried to scan it detects no scanner. I then tried the solution offered in this answer to a question based on a similar brother printer, but no luck. I must have made a mistake somewhere along the line. Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to find out what? Or should I uninstall everything and start again from the beginning?

• How do I fix a corrupt .cab file?

  In Windows XP, I have a folder of install files- an .exe pointing to 3 Setup.cab files. As the install progresses, it hangs on Setup2.cab as it installs tutorial_page.chm (a Help file). I have 3 options when it hangs: Abort, Retry and Ignore. Both Abort and Ignore rollback the install and exit. But if I keep pressing Retry the install will progress & this action has successfully installed the program (eventually) for me. I AM WONDERING IF I CAN EXTRACTRE-PACKAGE THE .CAB? From the installed program can I grab the help.chm file and replace it into Setup2.cab for a successful install? I am aware of the Microsoft Cabinet Software Development Kit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618 and How To Manually Modify and Rebuild CAB Files http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176810 but 1.)want to ask if this is even possible & 2.)don't know how to make a .DDF file for Makecab.exe

• Will HTML5/JS Eventually Replace All Client Side Languages? [closed]

  I'm just wondering about the future of it all. IMHO, there are 4 forces that define where technology goes: Microsoft, Apple, Google, Adobe. It looks like in Apple's iPhone/iPad iADs can now be programmed in HTML5. So does that mean HTML5 will eventually replace objective-c? Also, Microsoft has now shifted it's focus from WPF/Silverlight to HTML5 and I assume Visual Studio 2011 will be all about tooling support for HTML5. Because that's what Microsoft do. (Tools). In a few months IE9 the last major browser will support HTML5. Similarly Adobe is getting on the HTML5 bandwagon and allows to export flash content to HTML5 in their latest tools. And we all know how much in bed Google is with html5. Heck, their latest Operating System (Chrome OS) is nothing but a big fat web browser. Apps for Mobile (i.e., iPhone, Android, WM7) are very hard for a company to program especially for many different devices (each with their own language) so I'm assuming this won't last too long. I.e., HTML5 will be the unifying language. Which is somewhat sad for app developers because now users will be able to play the "cool" html5 apps for free on the web and it'll be hard to charge for them.   Hi, I need advice installing XAMPP with different php versions. How can I install XAMPP supporting different version of php? Before I formated my computer I used both WAMP and XAMPP for specific purposes. I used XAMPP because some of the scripts are buggy when run in WAMP, I used WAMP because it support different versions of PHP. Now I want that feature that support different version of PHP to be added to XAMPP. So I could just install 1 software for my Web Development and It would be easy for me to manage.   Esteban Kolsky's presentation at the Social Business Forum 2012 was meaningfully titled “Everything you wanted to know about Customer Service using Social but had no one to ask”.  A recent survey by ThinkJar, Kolsky’s independent analyst firm, reported how more than 90% of the interviewed companies consider embracing social channels in customer service the right thing to do for the business and its customers. These numbers shouldn't be too surprising given the popularity of services such as Twitter and Facebook (59% and 60% respectively in the survey) among organizations, the power consumers are gaining online and the 40% preference they have to escalate issues on social services. Moreover, both large enterprises and small businesses are realizing how customer retention is cheaper and easier than customer acquisition. Many companies are looking at communities and social networks as an opportunity to drive loyalty, satisfaction and word of mouth.
