    I have broken my boot sequence on my XP/Vista/Ubuntu box. I wish to restore the system back to the way that Ubuntu 9.04 (last installed OS) had it setup. I want to do only the mbr and /boot on the ubuntu partition and leave the rest of the system alone. How can I do this using the ubuntu 9.04 live CD?

Googled around and there is a way to disable devices completely: Cdrom: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom\Start (from 1 to 4) Usb: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR (from 3 to 4) but I need to disable them only for particular users.

  • HP ProBook 4540s CD/DVD Drive cannot Read Disks

    I seem to have a problem with the CD/DVD drive on my HP ProBook 4540s laptop. I cannot get it to read any disks. Normally, I would say that this is a hardware issue, but whenever I put a disk that previously could be read in the drive, it starts to make noise like it is trying to to read the disk but cannot and AnyDVD HD seems to be able to retrieve disk information with some struggle. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

    I am getting the UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME error on my Samsung laptop which does not have a CD Rom drive. I tried to merge the C and D partitions to get more space but since then the laptop does not start up anymore. I dont care about the laptop, just about some pictures on there which I did not back up yet. I really hope someone can help me?!! I am a new user, so cant post pictures, but can send a screenshot if needed.

  • Ubuntu 10.04 live cd keyboard problem.

    Today I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 x64 .iso but when trying it out in live cd the keyboard of both my laptop and a microsoft branded one didn't work. I was planning into installing Ubuntu in a partition but I couldn't even put my info in the installation process to do it. Is this a problem with the .iso or the driver? because I'm afraid that if I can actually go ahead with the installation then the keyboard won't work after that too.

It also won't boot Ubuntu the vast majority of the time, so I'm kind of screwed. After a ton of tries, I finally got my machine to boot a Linux command line. Is there anything I can do at this point to make my machine more runnable, just for the sake of installing OS X?

    I've got an Asus Eee PC with Windows 7 starter pre-installed on it. Now, I don't have anything attached to it, no CD/USB Stick/Cables. However, I still get this error: BOOTMGR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart Since I do not have the USB stick with the windows 7 starter OS and don't want to switch this computer to ubuntu as it is not for me, I can't follow the instructions in this tutorial.   • "Missing operating system" even when booting from Linux Live CD: hardware problem?

    My parents' computer stopped booting from the HDD into Windows: it's showing a "Missing operating system" error. I tried burning a Live CD of the latest Ubuntu and booting from that, but it's giving me the same error. I know the Live CD works (I can boot my laptop from it). It does seem to be actually trying to boot from the CD (when I boot with the CD in it takes longer to get to the error message than if I boot with the CD out, or if I change the BIOS boot order to skip the CD drive; and the CD drive light is active during that time). Might this be a hardware problem? Are there common problems I can look for that might cause this?

  • How can I confirm that burn process is completed successfully??

    Just now I tried to make a duplicate copy of my Windows XP Pro SP3 CD. I had set 32X speed while the max speed allowed is 48X. And checked "Verify the Data after burning". I didn't observe how much % did it complete. But after 15 mins (which is sufficient period to burn disc), I heard "Fatal Error" sound. When I saw the monitor, There was a message box which was showing "Error while burning Disc", I saved the error log which you can find here click_me. How do I acknowledge that burning process is done?? Well. I my PC is able to read the cd and it is bootable too.. I am not sure .. whether the burning process got failed or the verify Process! Please let me know if you have come across or aware of such situation .. As it is XP installation CD .. I don't want to do trial and error method. regards,

What is a good (secure) example of CD Key generation? What cryptographic primitive (if any) are they using? Is it a message digest? If so what data would they be hashing? What methods do developers employ to make it difficult for crackers to build their own key generators?

  • BASH Script to cd to directory with spaces in pathname

    Argggg. I've been struggling with this stupid problem for days and I can't find an answer. I'm using BASH on Mac OS X and I'd like to create a simple executable script file that would change to another directory when it's run. However, the path to that directory has spaces in it. How the heck do you do this? This is what I have... Name of file: cdcode File contents: cd ~/My Code Now granted, this isn't a long pathname, but my actual pathname is five directories deep and four of those directories have spaces in the path. BTW, I've tried cd "~/My Code" and cd "~/My\ Code" and neither of these worked. If you can help, THANKS! This is driving me crazy!!

    I'd like to be able to determine what music album CD is in a CD drive. For example, if someone claims that the CD in their drive is Eminem - The Eminem Show, I would like to be able to verify that the CD is indeed The Eminem Show. Any ideas? I've applied for a Gracenote developer license, but they won't get back to me for five days. Also, how does this work? Is there some GUID or other unique identifier that music discs are encoded with? Lastly, might this be possible with data CDs, like, say, the Diablo II install Disc 1? If so, any directions you can point me in, for accomplishing this?

    I'm trying to implement my own version of the 'cd' command that presents the user with a list of hard-coded directories to choose from, and the user has to enter a number corresponding to an entry in the list. The program, named my_cd.py for now, should then effectively 'cd' the user to the chosen directory. Example of how this should work: /some/directory $ my_cd.py 1) ~ 2) /bin/ 3) /usr Enter menu selection, or q to quit: 2 /bin $ Currently, I'm trying to 'cd' using os.chdir('dir'). However, this doesn't work, probably because my_cd.py is kicked off in its own child process. This is part of my isolinux.cfg file: label vesa menu label Install ^RAIDIX system kernel vmlinuz append initrd=initrd.img xdriver=vesa nomodeset text linux ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg If I specify parameter ks=cdrom:/isolinux/ks.cfg my iso will boot only from cd or dvd-rom. If I specify parameter ks=hd:<device>:/ks.cfg my iso will boot only from usb-drive. Can I specify ks parameter to boot from both type of installation media?
