  I'm writing a GAE app in Java and only using Python for the data upload. I'm trying to import a CSV file that looks like this: POSTAL_CODE_ID,PostalCode,City,Province,ProvinceCode,CityType,Latitude,Longitude 1,A0E2Z0,Monkstown,Newfoundland,NL,D,47.150300000000001,-55.299500000000002 I was able to import this file in my datastore if I import Latitude and Longitude as floats, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to import lat and lng as a GeoPt. Here is my loader.py file: import datetime from google.appengine.ext import db from google.appengine.tools import bulkloader class PostalCode(db.Model): id = db.IntegerProperty() postal_code = db.PostalAddressProperty() city = db.StringProperty() province = db.StringProperty() province_code = db.StringProperty() city_type = db.StringProperty() lat = db.FloatProperty() lng = db.FloatProperty() class PostalCodeLoader(bulkloader.Loader): def __init__(self): bulkloader.Loader.__init__(self, 'PostalCode', [('id', int), ('postal_code', str), ('city', str), ('province', str), ('province_code', str), ('city_type', str), ('lat', float), ('lng', float) ]) loaders = [PostalCodeLoader] I think that the two db.FloatProperty() lines should be replaced with a db.GeoPtProperty(), but that's where my trail ends. I'm very new to Python so any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to clone a model's attributes easily?

  I have these models: class Address < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :event attr_accessible :street, :city validates :street, :city, :presence => true end class Event < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :address accepts_nested_attributes_for :address end If I do the below assignment in the Events create action and save the event I get an error: #Use the current user's address for the event @event.address_attributes = current_user.address.attributes #Error occurs at the above mentioned line ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound (Couldn't find Address with ID=1 for Event with ID=) I think what's happening is that all the address's attributes (including the primary key) is getting assigned in the @event.address_attributes = line. But all I really want is the "real data" (street, city), not the primary keys or created_at etc to get copied over. I suppose I could write a small method to do this sort of selective copy but I can't help but feel there must be some built-in method for this? What's the best/right way to do this?

• Rails validation issue with before_validation

  I'm still fairly new to rails so I'm not sure what I'm missing here. I'm using GeoKit to geocode an address upon saving. I have a method that geocodes an address and if it fails to find it, it adds an error to the errors list. • LINQ to Entites: Doing a count over one-to-many relationships

  I have a couple of tables where there are one to many relationships. Let's say I have a Country table, a State table with a FK to Country, and a City table with a FK to State. I'd like to be able to create a count of all Cities for a given country, and also a count of cities based on a filter - something like: foreach( var country in Model.Country ) { total = country.State.All().City.All().Count() ; filtered = country.State.All().City.Any(c=>c.field == value).Count(); } Obviously, this doesn't work - is there any way to do this?

  I have the following query that works well. SELECT DISTINCT city,region1,region2 from static_geo_world where country='AU' AND (city LIKE '%geel%' OR region1 LIKE '%geel%' OR region2 LIKE '%geel%' OR region3 LIKE '%geel%' OR zip LIKE 'geel%') ORDER BY city; I need to also extract a column named 'id' but this messes up the DISTINCT as each ID is different. How can I get the same UNIQUE set of records as above but also get the 'id' for each record? Note: sometimes I can return a few thousand records so a query for each record isn't possible. Any ideas would be very welcome...

  I need to take an address that consists of "city, state" from column "location" and populate 2 new columns "city" and "state" but leave location the way it is, now I have done this with a SUBSTRING_INDEX command but I have to run the command everytime to do this, how can I make it stick? thanks in advance. also here is my substring code.... I've had about 8-10 university courses on programming from data structure, to one on all languages, to specific ones such as java & c++. I'm a bit rusty because i usually take 2-3 month breaks from coding. This is a personal project that I started thinking of two years back. Okay down to the details, and a specific question, I'm having problems with my mutator functions. It seems to be that I am trying to access a private variable incorrectly. The question is, am I nesting my classes too much and trying to mutate a base class variable the incorrect way. If so point me in the way of the correct literature, or confirm this is my problem so I can restudy this information. • National Give Camp Weekend - January 14-16, 2011

  What is a Give Camp?  I get asked this question constantly in the SharePoint Community.  About 3 years ago there was an event called "We Are Microsoft" in Dallas, TX.  A lady named, Toi Wright, gathered up a bunch of charities and gathered up a bunch of IT Professionals in the community.  They met for an entire weekend devising better ways to help these charities with 3 days projects.  None of these charities had in house IT staff or they were lacking.  The time these projects would save would help out other people in the long run.  The first give camp was really popular that a couple guys from Kansas City decided to come up with a give camp in the Kansas City regiona.  The event was called Coders 4 Charity.  I read Jeff Julian's post on the "We Are Microsoft" event that it inspired me to get involved.  i showed up to this event and we were split into teams.  On that team I met a couple really awsome guys: Blake Theiss, Lee Brandt, Tim Wright, and Joe Loux.  We created a SharePoint site for a boyscout troup.  It was my first exposure to Silverlight 1.1.  I had so much fun that I attended the event the next year and the St. Louis Coders 4 Charity.  Last year in 2010 when I moved i searched high and low.  Sure enough they had an event in Philadelphia.  I helped out with two SharePoint Projects for a team of firefighters and another charity.  This year there are a series of give camps around the U.S.  They have consolidated most of the give camps.  The first ever New York City Give Camp is on National Give Camp Day.  If you guys are interested I see there is a give camp in Philadelphia, St. Louis, Northwest Arkansas, Seattle, Atlanta, Houston, and more...Here is a link to the site I would definitely encourage you to get involved: http://givecamp.org/national-givecamp/.  Also, if you feel like it's only developer focused that's entirely wrong.  They need DBAs, Project Leads, Architects, and many other roles fulfilled aside from development.  It is a great experience to meet good people and help out a charity doing what we all love to do.  I strongle encourage getting involved in a give camp.  if you are coming to the NYC Give Camp I would love to meet you.  i will be there on Saturday somewhere in the morning until around dinner time.

• Ios Game with many animated Nodes,performance issues

  I'm working in a large map upside-down game(not tiled map),the map i use is a city. I have to insert many node to create the "life of the city",something like people that cross the streets,cars,etc... Some of this characters are involved in physics and game logic but others are only graphic characters. For what i know the only way i can achive this result is to create each character node with or without physic body and animate each character with a texture atlas. In this way i think that i'll have many performance problems, (the characters will be something like 100/150) even if i'll apply all the performance tips that i know... My question is: with large numbers of characters there another programming pattern that i must follow ? What is the approch of game like simcity,simpsons tapped out for ios,etc... that have so many animation at the same time?

• Is data integrity possible without normalization?

  I am working on an application that requires the storage of location information such as city, state, zip code, latitude, and longitude. I would like to ensure: Location data is accurate Detroit, CA Detroit IS NOT in California Detroit, MI Detroit IS in Michigan Cities and states are spelled correctly California not Calefornia Detroit not Detriot Cities and states are named consistently Valid: CA Detroit Invalid: Cali california DET d-town The D Also, since city/zip data is not guaranteed to be static, updating this data in a normalized fashion could be difficult, whereas it could be implemented as a de facto location if it is denormalized. A couple thoughts that come to mind: A collection of reference tables that store a list of all states and the most common cities and zip codes that can grow over time. It would search the database for an exact or similar match and recommend corrections. Use some sort of service to validate the location data before it is stored in the database. Is it possible to fulfill these requirements without normalization, and if so, should I denormalize this data?

• Planning an Event&ndash;SPS NYC

  I bet some of you were wondering why I am not going to any events for the most part in June and July (aside from volunteering at SPS Chicago).  Well I basically have no life for the next 2 months.  We are approaching the 11th hour of SharePoint Saturday New York City.  The event is slated to have 350 to 400 attendees.  This is second year in a row I’ve helped run it with Jason Gallicchio.  It’s amazingly crazy how much effort this event requires versus Kansas City.  It’s literally 2x the volume of attendees, speakers, and sponsors plus don’t even get me started about volunteers.  So here is a bit of the break down… We have 30 volunteers+ that Tasha Scott from the Hampton Roads Area will be managing the day of the event to do things like timing the speakers, handing out food, making sure people don’t walk into the event that did not sign up until we get a count for fire code, registering people, watching the sharpees, watching the prizes, making sure attendees get to the right place,  opening and closing the partition in the big room, moving chairs, moving furniture, etc…Then there is Jason, Greg, and I who will be making sure that the speakers, sponsors, and everything is going smoothly in the background.  We need to make sure that everything is setup properly and in the right spot.  We also need to make sure signs are printed, schedules are created, bags are stuffed with sponsor material.  Plus we need to send out emails to sponsors reminding them to send us the right information to post on the site for charity sessions, send us boxes with material to stuff bags, and we need to make sure that Michael Lotter gets there information for invoicing.  We also need to check that Michael has invoiced everyone and who has paid, because we can’t order anything for the event without money.  Once people have paid we need to setup food orders, speaker and volunteer dinners, buy prizes, buy bags, buy speakers/volunteer/organizer shirts, etc…During this process we need all the abstracts from speakers, all the bios, pictures, shirt sizes, and other items so we can create schedules and order items.  We also need to keep track of who is attending the dinner the night before for volunteers and speakers and make sure we don’t hit capacity.  Then there is attendee tracking and making sure that we don’t hit too many attendees.  We need to make sure that attendees know where to go and what to do.  We have to make all kinds of random supply lists during this process and keep on track with a variety of lists and emails plus conference calls.  All in all it’s a lot of work and I am trying to keep track of it all the top so that we don’t duplicate anything or miss anything.  So basically all in all if you don’t see me around for another month don’t worry I do exist. Right now if you look at what I’m doing I am traveling every Monday morning and Thursday night back and forth to Washington DC from New Jersey.  Every night I am working on organizational stuff for SharePoint Saturday New York City.  Every Tuesday night we are running an event conference call.  Every weekend I am either with family or my boyfriend and cat trying hard not to touch the event.  So all my time is pretty much work, event, and family/boyfriend.  I have 0 bandwidth for anything in the community.  If you compound that with my severe allergy problems in DC and a doctor’s appointment every month plus a new med once a week I’m lucky I am still standing and walking.  So basically once July 30th hits hopefully Jason Gallicchio, Greg Hurlman, and myself will be able to breathe a little easier.  If I forget to do this thank you Greg and Jason.  Thank you Tom Daly.  Thank you Michael Lotter.  Thank you Tasha Scott.  Thank you Kevin Griffin.  Thank you all the volunteers, speakers, sponsors, and attendees who will and have made this event a success.  Hopefully, we have enough time until next year to regroup, recharge, and make the event grow bigger in a different venue.  Awesome job everyone we sole out within 3 days of registration and we still have several weeks to go.  Right now the waitlist is at 49 people with room to grow.  If you attend the event thank all these guys I mentioned above for making it possible.  It’s going to be awesome I know it but I probably won’t remember half of it due to the blur of things that we will all be taking care of the day of the event.  Catch you all in the end of July/Early August where I will attempt to post something useful and clever and possibly while wearing a fez. • Job Search Engine Url Structure Issue [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the best stucture of SEO friendly URL? I am working on a job board, and i'm trying to figure out a good design for URL structure. Some things that I have found through research: 100 - 150 Chars long is ideal 3-5 words in your url, according to Matt Cutts Use .htaccess to force clean urls Do not duplicate data (important) Clean and precise, describing the content Use hyphens On the homepage, I try to detect the users location based on IP, but this isn't always accurate, and not always reliable. So until they put in their city/location, I can't always use this structure but this is potentially work-able. For Searching, a form post to a results page: domain.com/jobs/[city]/[search] ie: domain.com/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ OR domain.com/search/jobs/toronto/sales manager/ or do I remove the word JOBS and just use Search. I trying to keep good search terms in the URL, but also keep it clean and concise. Can someone give me some feedback and thoughts to 'why'...

• Importing FBX with multiple meshes in UDK

  I need to import into UDK a several amount of FBX models (representing buildings) which are composed by various submeshes (walls, windows, roof...). I need to keep the individual meshes (can't use the merge option) but I also need to work with the building as a whole. Do you know if this is possible? How? Also, is there a way to keep the textures assignment for the FBX models after importing them to Unreal? Doing the process manually (importing model, importing texture, assign to the material, assign the material to each mesh and submesh) for 100 or 200 models (to import an entire city from City Engine), isn't viable.

• Basic use of Business Rules

  I have a query on whether the following requirements would need to be designed via Business Rules - this is for a JEE based application where currently this is coded as part of the Business logic. System will create a tax account for every city, county and district combination that imposes tax for only certain cities, counties or districts depending on the taxpayer's business. When the user establishes an account which exists in all subdivisions (i.e. at city or county level), the application must use his tax code and automatically populate all the locations without requiring the user to data enter every location. I assume this would mean a data lookup table from a master table (of tax accounts) and fetch and display all locations. Is there some way in which a Rules Engine can be used to manage these combinations?

• C# XNA render an entire frame to a texture2d

  I asked a question here: C# XNA Make rendered screen a texture2d But, I ended up not getting the exact result I was looking for since I didn't ask the question right. In a game I am writing, I render an extremely large city out of objects, this can cause lag when moving the camera to view things that are off screen. I need a way to render then ENTIRE city, even the stuff that is off screen, and make it into a Texture2D. The answer I chose for the last one didn't work entirely right because it only gets what is on screen, not what is off.
