• Peer code review for full application

  My sincerest apologies if this is the wrong place to post something like this, but this seemed like the best fit. I was wondering if there are any websites or resources for a full site peer code review. I'm new to Ruby specifically and want to make sure that my logic is following the overall best standards. I've pieced together multiple different tutorials and I feel like while my understanding is getting better, it'd be great if the overall structure of such an application could be critiqued, and for someone that doesn't really know another Ruby developer - I find that I've run into a roadblock and don't want to develop bad habits now.

• Horizontal title bar shadow while in full screen

  While in full screen the horizontal shadow of the title bar (I am not too sure about its name) appears on top of everything. How can I get rid of it? It's quite distracting while coding in Guake mode and annoying while watching movies. In the picture I've setup Guake with some transparency (that's why you can see things underneath), but the shadow is on the top of everything while I am in fullscreen. This, as I have already said, happens to me both while I am watching movies or programming in fullscreen mode. This usually happens after awaking the laptop from hibernation. Now it looks like it has gone, but I am still wandering if someone knows something about it. And here back it is :[ I'm running Ubuntu 13.04

• Broadcom bcm4311 rev2 Full disabled on battery

  Ok this is my problem... My problem begins while ago when I installed ubuntu 10.10. (is the same with 11.04,11.10...) My wireless card is disabled if the power cord is unplugged, and the only way to fix this is rebooting my pc WITH the power cord plugged and if I use lspci command, it doesn't show me the wireless card. is like if I've removed the wireless board from my laptop port. I've searched a lot of solutions for bcmw4311 issues, but none of them fix my problem because when apply one of the fixes, if I unplug the cord, my wireless card it just gone away... I have dual boot on my pc(w7,ubuntu), I've tried with full installation just to see if this is the problem, but not, is the same. On windows all work correctly with and without power cord.. so this is not a hardware problem, is more like a kernel problem. anyway I can use wireless with power cord plugged, but c'mon this is a laptop not a desktop pc XD haha any help is welcome

• Youtube showing horizontal lines when full screen in google chrome

  First, im new in ubuntu so please bear with me. My google chrome shows strange behavior when playing youtube videos in full screen mode. There will be some horizontal white lines, which is exactly like when you playing the game without the vsync. I've checked firefox and the videos working perfectly in there. I also tried to play videos from my HDD using VLC player and its working fine. It seems the problem is in the google chrome alone. My version of ubuntu is 13.04, my laptop is asus n46vz and i use the latest release of google chrome. I've tried to ask google, but it seems he has no answer. Thanks for your time :D

• After install of kubuntu-full, no longer have access to Unity login

  I installed Ubuntu 13.10 about a week ago. Just today I went ahead and installed kubuntu-full to get KDE and it's associated programs. I want to keep the Unity login screen though (default when you install Ubuntu). I can't seem to get this working. Doing a 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm' or 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm' and choosing either one of those does not get me there. If I choose gdm, I just end up with a gnome login screen. If I pick lightdm, I end up with a KDE login screen. Doesn't seem to be an option for choosing the unity login screen (whatever it's called). Any assistance?

• Full brightness and keyboard backligh at boot

  I own an Asus N56VZ, and each time I start Ubuntu (13.10 and prior versions) my screen brightness and keyboard backlights reset their values to the max. Ubuntu doesn't save my settings on reboot. I was wondering if someone could help me with this? It is horrible when, at night, I turn on my computer - it is like looking directly to the sun, and it hurts my eyes. I tried googling and none of the pages I found actually helped. I think my issue might be grub-related. I have a dual-boot with Windows 8.1, so before I start my computer I see grub to choose my operating system. My screen starts at full brightness as soon as I reach grub. Maybe he is making the OS forget about my last values, overriding it with its? Does someone knows how to solve this? Thanks in advance :) PS: I'm using bumblebee with Nvidia driver 304, but this issue existed before I installed it.

• Installed 11.10 on shared drive, when other partition mounted, HDD shown full

  I just partitioned a 500GB HDD 50%-50%. I installed ubuntu 11.10 on one half and copied a load of files onto the other. When I don't mount the other partition, it shows I have used 12.1GB and have about 240GB free. The second I mount the other partition, I can't copy any files over and get a disk full message. There is about 10-20GB Free on the other partition. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

• Videos stutter in full screen

  Using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.2. When I load video files (avi, mkv, mp4), they play smoothly in windowed mode, but when in full screen, they mildly (but noticeably) stutter. I've tried various players (from VLC to SMplayer2), with many different output drivers and it's always the same. Also, my video card is AMD Radeon HD 6450, and I've had no luck with the proprietary FGLRX drivers. Every time I install them, my system becomes very sluggish (window dragging animations become choppy etc.). Thanks in advance, guys.

How do I check the box to allow Remote desktop access from the RemoteApp settings programmatically? • Full-text search locks up database - error 0x8001010e

  Hi We have a full-text catalog that is populated via a job every 15 minutes like so: ALTER FULLTEXT INDEX ON [dbo].[WorkItemLongTexts] START INCREMENTAL POPULATION We have encountered a problem where the database containing this catalog locks up. There are a couple of scenarios, we either see the job execute and the process hang with with a wait type of UNKNOWN TOKEN, or we see another process hang with a wait type of MSSEARCH. Once this happens the job continues to run but informs us that the request to start a full-text index population is ignored because a population is currently active. Looking in the full text log files we see the following error each time these problems occur: 2010-04-21 08:15:00.76 spid21s The full-text catalog health monitor reported a failure for full-text catalog "XXXFullTextCatalog" (5) in database "YYY" (14). Reason code: 0. Error: 0x8001010e(The application called an interface that was marshalled for a different thread.). The system will restart any in-progress population from the previous checkpoint. If this message occurs frequently, consult SQL Server Books Online for troubleshooting assistance. This is an informational message only. No user action is required."'' The only solution is to restart the SQL Server service and then the full text service. This is now occuring on a daily basis now so any help would be appreciated.

  Is it possible to pass command-line arguments to a program that is invoked via a file:// url? I'm trying to include Remote Desktop links in a wiki page that lists some servers: <a href="file:///c|/windows/system32/mstsc.exe /v:serverName">serverName</a> When I omit the argument the link works fine, but when I include it the link doesn't work. I Googled around a bit and couldn't find any references to this. I suspect that the answer is that file:// urls simple don't accept arguments (I can think of all kinds of ways to abuse them if they do), but I thought I'd throw it out there in case I've simply got the syntax wrong. • Order of operations to render VBO to FBO texture and then rendering FBO texture full quad

  I've just started using OpenGL with C# via the OpenTK library. I've managed to successfully render my game world using VBOs. I now want to create a pixellated affect by rendering the frame to an offscreen FBO with a size half of my GameWindow size and then render that FBO to a full screen quad. I've been looking at the OpenTK example here: http://www.opentk.com/doc/graphics/frame-buffer-objects ...but the result is a black form. I'm not sure which parts of the example code belongs in the OnLoad event and OnRenderFrame. Can someone please tell me if the below code shows the correct order of operations?   In a very busy PHP script we have a call at the beginning to "Set names utf8" which is setting the character set in which mysql should interpret and send the data back from the server to the client. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/charset-applications.html I want to get rid of it so I set default-character-set=utf8 In our server ini file. (see link above) The setting seems to be working since the relevant server parameters are : 'character_set_client', 'utf8' 'character_set_connection', 'utf8' 'character_set_database', 'latin1' 'character_set_filesystem', 'binary' 'character_set_results', 'utf8' 'character_set_server', 'latin1' 'character_set_system', 'utf8' But after this change and commenting out set names utf8 call still the data starts to come out garbled. Please advise....

I understand STL sets are based on the abstract data structure of a binary search tree. So what is the underlying data structure? An array? Also, how does insert() work for a set? How does the set check whether an element already exists in it? I read on wikipedia that another way to implement a set is with a hash table. How would this work?

  Ahhh character encodings. Don’t you just love them? Having character issues in MODx? Then probably the MODx manager character encoding, the character encoding of the site itself, your database’s character encoding, or the encoding MODx/php uses to talk to MySQL isn’t correct. The Website Encoding Your MODx site’s character encoding can be configured in the manager under Tools/Configuration/Site/Character encoding. This is the encoding your website’s visitors will get. The Manager’s Encoding The manager’s encoding can be changed by setting $modx_manager_charset at manager/includes/lang/<language>.inc.php like this (for example): $modx_manager_charset = 'iso-8859-1'; To find out what language you’re using (and thus was file you need to change), check Tools/Configuration/Site/Language (1 line above the character encoding setting). This needs to be the same encoding as your site. You can’t have your manager in utf8 and your site in iso-8859-1. Your Database’s Encoding The charset MODx/php uses to talk to your database can be set by changing $database_connection_charset in manager/includes/config.inc.php. This needs to be the same as your database’s charset. Make sure you use the correct corresponding charset, for iso-8859-1 you need to use ‘latin1′. Utf8 is just utf8. Example: $database_connection_charset = 'latin1'; Now, if you check Reports/System info, the ‘Database Charset’ might say something else. This is because the mysql variable ‘character_set_database’ is displayed here, which contains the character set used by the default database and not the one for the current database/connection. However, if you’d change this to display ‘character_set_connection’, it could still say something else because the ’set character set’ statement used by MODx doesn’t change this value either. The ’set names’ statement does, but since it turns out my MODx install works now as expected I’ll just leave it at this before I get a headache. If I saved you a potential headache or you think I’m totally wrong or overlooked something, let me know in the comments. btw: I want to be able to use a real editor with MODx. Somehow.

Electronics hobbyist Stephen Hobley wanted to see if he could create an etching solution that wasn’t as dangerous and noxious smelling at traditional muriatic acid solutions. By combining regular white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and table salt, he created a homemade etching solution from ingredients safe enough to store in your pantry. The only downside to his recipe is that, compared to traditional etching solutions, the process takes a little bit longer so you’ll have to leave your board in the solution longer. Not a bad trade off for the ability to skip using any oops-I-burned-my-skin-off acids.   For those of you who may have missed it, Peter Flies, Principal Technical Support Engineer for WebCenter Content, gave an excellent webcast on database searching and indexing in WebCenter Content.  It's available for replay along with a download of the slidedeck.  Look for the one titled 'WebCenter Content: Database Searching and Indexing'. One of the items he led with...and concluded with...was a recommendation on optimizing your search collection if you are using full-text searching with the Oracle database.  This can greatly improve your search performance.  And this would apply to both Oracle Text Search and DATABASE.FULLTEXT search methods.  Peter describes how a collection can become fragmented over time as content is added, updated, and deleted.  Just like you should defragment your hard drive from time to time to get your files placed on the disk in the most optimal way, you should do the same for the search collection.
