• Exchange 2010: Replication Service Still Trying to Replicate Deleted Mailbox Store

  In advance, thank you for your opinions! I just migrated from Server/Exchange 2003 to Server 2008 SR2 running Exchange 2010. I had an extra mailbox that appeared with some system mailboxes in it. I used the EMS to move those mailboxes over and then deleted the store out of the EMC. Since then every so often I get an Error in Event Viewer. Source: MSExchangeRepl ID: 4098 Error: The Microsoft Exchange Replication service couldn't find a valid configuration for database '5f012f40-3bad-4003-a373-dbc0ffb6736f' on server 'EXCHSERVER'. Error: (nothing after this) I can confirm that the above GUID is the mailbox store of that I deleted. No other Exchange errors occur. How can I tell Exchange Replication to ignore this store? Setup, one Exchange server 2003 transitioned over to 2010. No other Exchange servers. Is there a way to fix this? Do I need to change a setting to stop replication? I plan to add a second Exchange server in the next few days so stopping replication would be a bad thing. Thanks again in advance. Jason

  i am trying to configure Exchange Server 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 to receive emails from the internet following the danscourses tutorials: and i followed this video for the DNS & MX records: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdf_3DRssks i don't have any windows administration skills, and i am stuck with the DNS configuration. and the following are my domain configuration i got from the hosting. following are the steps i made: 1- Add new name server: add ns1.centors.com ip Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 2- Change the A record change it to point to the public ip address Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 3- New cname record for www and make it resolve to centors.com 4- New mx record for mail.centors.com 5- New A record for mail.centors.com: name: mail ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 6- new A record for ns1: ip: Exchange Server Public IP: 41.233.26.131 7- i made port forward in the router for SMTP and POP3 to the exchange server local ip address. ISSUE: i have a user account in the active directory, and the user is member of the domain, the user is [email protected] and when trying to login with this account in outlook 2010 on other machine using following data: account type: POP3 incoming mail server: mail.centors.com outgoing mail server: mail.centors.com i always get the error: Authorization failed, check your server settings. please advise what's wrong with the configuration, thanks in advance.

• Referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 SMO from Visual Studio 2010

  Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

• Can't import contacts into Outlook from Excel

  I run MS Office 2010. I have all contacts from a previous Outlook 2010 saved in an Excel sheet. I have tried dozens of time to import, but when Outlooks is supposed to do the mapping of the columns I only have one column in my CSV-file: firstname;middlename;surname, etc. It means I cannot map the data correctly. I have tried saving in MS-DOS and Tab and it does not get better. I have tried saving on another computer and it does help either. ALso tried importing to Gmail with same result. Can anyone help?

• How can I add subdomains of default accepted domain of Exchange 2010

  I have an Exchange 2010 that has several accepted domains. Now I want this server to accept - besides the default SMTP domain - all subdomains of the default domain. The documentation in Technet states When you create an accepted domain, you can use a wildcard character (*) in the address space to indicate that all subdomains of the SMTP address space are also accepted by the Exchange organization. For example, to configure Contoso.com and all its subdomains as accepted domains, enter *.Contoso.com as the SMTP address space. It is, however not possible to add e. g. *.contoso.com if contoso.com is already configured. Exchange complains in this case that the domain is already configured. It is also not possible to edit the "value", i. e. the domain name of an accepted domain. I know that I cannot modify the default accepted domain, but changing it to another does not help either, because the domain name itself can never be edited. The last idea was deleting the accepted domain and re-creating it with "*." prepended. This is, however, also impossible because it is of course not possible to delete or modify the default address policy and if a domain name is used in an address template it cannot be removed from the accepted domains. The question is: How can I make my Exchange 2010 server accept any subdomain of its default accepted domain with a wildcard?

• Cluster Core Resource state of Exchange 2010 DAG

  I have two Exchange 2010 servers in a DAG and a witness server to implement mailbox resiliency. The two Exchange servers are in two subnets and the Windows failover cluster therefore has two IP address resources. I now that Exchange uses "core functionality" of Windows Server failover clustering, but it does not use all features. My setup also seems to work, but if I run the validation in the Windows Failover Cluster Manager, it complains about one of the IP address resources being offline. However, I cannot bring this resource online, because the server complains that "the specified cluster node is not the owner of the resource, or the node is not a possible owner of the resource". If I "Simulate failure of this resource", it becomes offline and the other IP becomes online. I have the vague idea that Exchange might use the state of the IP resource to identify the Primary Active Manager, but I am not sure. As it is obviously important that failover really works, I would like to be sure. Therefore, my question is: Is it normal that only one IP address resource in a Exchange 2010 DAG failover cluster is active at a time? If not, how do I bring both resources online at the same time given the error described above?

• Visual Studio 2010 won't compile/create new projects

  My Visual Studio 2010 Professional with SP1 installed won't compile anymore. The shown error is: TRACKER : error TRK0005: Failed to locate: "CL.exe". The system cannot find the file specified. Strangely it is also not possible anymore to create new projects - the wizard appears but just restarts when I press create. As I found out the paths for Visual Studio are now built from settings in the registry. Namely HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio. Comparing a colleagues installation with mine revealed no different settings. So this is how the Property Pages/Configuration Properties/VC++ Directories look like: Executable Directories: $(ExecutablePath) Include Directories: $(IncludePath) Reference Directories: $(ReferencePath) Library Directories: $(LibraryPath) Source Directories: $(SourcePath) Exclude Directories: $(ExcludePath) From the Visual Studio 2010 Command Prompt, cl.exe is found. I can only guess that this behavior was caused by a reinstallation of Studio a couple of months ago (to a different folder). As we use an external build-script for our main project there is a good chance that it is broken since then. Any hints?

• Prevent Outlook 2010 Insert Picture resizing image

  When I "Insert Picture" a JPEG in Outlook 2010 it automatically resizes the image and, I think, recompresses it too. I realise this would be useful for photographs or for people who try to email 1MB BMPs but I would like to email around an image at the original pixel size without recompression. Is there a way to turn this off, or better still choose settings for each image insert? I found this page in the Office help. It's for Word, PowerPoint and Excel not Outlook but points you at File, Options, Advanced, Image Settings. There's no equivalent section in Outlook. I know Outlook uses Word as its editor so I've looked at Word's settings but there isn't an 'original size' here: there's only 'turn off image recompression' and pick target DPI from 96, 150, 220. I guess Office is finding a DPI value in the JPEG file and scaling it up or down to match this setting. I can't find an equivalent option in Outlook's options menu but there's so many settings and pop-up dialogs I may have missed something. Picture Format, Reset image size resets the image to the rescaled version, not the original. I can't see a way to edit a pixel value into size values in the image properties after insert. Thanks! I realise I can probably achieve this by editing the image metadata in PhotoShop elements or similar but there ought to be a way without editing the file? This is new behaviour in Outlook 2010; 2007 didn't do this.

• Where do Outlook folders go when moved?

  I have an account with external user mailboxes opened and accidentally I have moved a folder and now I can't find it anywhere. Action: I clicked on a folder and dragged it into another one. Result: Can't find the moved folder anywhere The above picture is the folders I currently have from my Outlook 2010 (via Exchange 2010), under an AD Network. Where can I (me, having admin rights over the network) retrieve that missing folder again? Attempts: The original and the one folder I need was accidentally moved, but I have created a poi folder and tried the same way, and I got the same result... the folder went missing. I also tried to reboot the client machine and access the same mailbox from OWA ... no luck on both attempts :( Any ideas on how I can retrieve the missing folder and its emails again?

• Exchange 2010 OWA- Open Other User Mailbox

  I just started working for this small firm (30 people) a little bit ago, replacing their System Admin. First thing I noticed was Exchange Server 2010 was WAY out of date. Believe it or not they did not have SP1 installed. So after I installed and configured Exchange 2010 SP3 and redirected OWA I noticed something in OWA. I could add ANYONE's User Mailbox WITHOUT giving mailbox premission. I created a couple test users, same thing. I even had another employee provide me access to their OWA and they could open anyone's Inbox without granting permission. I don't want to play the blame game, but I was SHOCKED that this was going on. Luckly being such a small company I'll be able to cover this mistake that I did not create, BUT HOW? My guess is that I need to find out where the past System Admin went wrong in providing Full Access Permission? Or could this be a Auto-Mapping issue? • Weird problem with Visual C++ 2010 Express

  This has happened before on my Vista Premium installation, and now it's happening on my Windows 7 Home Premium installation. Basically everytime I install Visual Studio Express 2010, it works fine for a random amount of time but then suddenly starts to hide from my sight -- that's the best way I can explain it. VS does not crash, and from what I can tell it does not freeze either; It continues to work, I can even "minimize" and "maximize" it; I simply cannot see it nor can I interact with it any meaningful way. Also: After the "crash" there are no logs in: Root\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express - ENU. Nor any other files created at the time of the crash. There are no traces in the event viewer. The program seems to be functioning perfectly in the process manager. If I reinstall Visual C++, it works normally for a seemingly random period of time before going cookoo again. I am stumped. This has never happened to me before, with any other program. And yet I doubt it really is a problem with Visual C++; More like something general that seems to have picked on it for some reason. Still, after a clean install with a new OS, I'm kinda thinking there's something wrong here. Any help would be appreciated, altough I suspect that the answer to this question will make me feel embarassed. P.S. Not sure if it helps, but I think around the same time I started having problems (On both installations) with windows turning off the display when I leave the computer, and then seemingly crashing when it turns it on again -- in fact when I interact with it it seems to be responding to my commands without actually display anything.

• One user sometimes gets an unknown certificate error opening Outlook

  Let me clarify a little. This isn't an unknown certificate error it's an unknown certificate error in so much as I can't figure out where the certificate comes from. This happens on a Win 7 Enterprise machine connecting to Exchange 2010 with Outlook 2010. The error he gets is that the root is not trusted because it's a self-signed cert. Take a look at this screenshot because even if I had generated this myself I wouldn't have put "SomeOrganizationalUnit" or "SomeCity" or "SomeState", etc. (Red block covers our domain name.) I'm a little concerned this is a symptom of a security breach. Exchange 2010 has three certificates installed but none of them are this certificate. They all have different expiration dates (one is expired) and different meta-data. edit: There are two scenarios that I see the certificate warning and one of them I can reliably repeat. When the user leaves his computer on over night Outlook pops the Security Warning window. I don't know what time this happens. Using Outlook Anywhere if I connect to Exchange externally via a cellular USB modem the Security Warning window will appear every time I close and reopen Outlook. Whether I say Yes or No does not make a difference on whether or not I can connect to Exchange and send/receive email. In other words, I can always connect to Exchange. I've checked my two Exchange servers and my Cisco router for a certificate that matches this one and I can't find it. edit 2: Here is a screenshot of the Security Alert window. (I've been calling it Security Warning... My mistake.) edit 3: I stopped seeing this error several weeks ago but I can't tie it to any single event (because I just sort of realized that warning had stopped showing up) but I think I found the source of the certificate. Last week I found out that the certificate on our website DomainA.com was invalid. I knew that our web admin had installed a valid certificate so when I look into the problem I found out I was being presented with the invalid certificate that this posting is in regards to. The Exchange server's domain is mail.DomainA.com so I can only guess that Outlook was passing this invalid certificate through as it did some kind of check on DomainA.com. This issue is still a mystery because the certificate warning stopped appearing several weeks ago whereas the invalid certificate issue on the website was only fixed last week. It ended up being a problem with the website control panel. The valid certificate was installed but not being served for some reason and instead the self-signed cert was being served.

I've created a new LGNTOPL.GIF file to replace the existing one in the folder: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.158.1\themes\resources” When I bring up OWA, I still get the original “Outlook Web App” logo. I’ve searched and found a couple of other instances of LGNTOPL.GIF in the directories: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.123.3\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\14.3.146.0\themes\resources” “C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\Current\themes\resources” I’ve replaced the LGNTOPL.GIF file in each of the above directories but got the same results. I’ve tried clearing my browser cache and even using multiple browsers from multiple PC’s but the same results. I’ve even tried making my GIF file the same pixel size as the original LGNTOPL.GIF logo but still the same results. I’ve tried restarting IIS on the CAS server and restarting the server but same results. Has something changed with Exchange 2010 UR3 when trying to customize OWA? I don't see anything documented about any change to OWA customization. Thanks

• Identifying Exchange 2010 regular process that is walking the mailbox database

  I have an Exchange 2010 server running on a SAN-backed platform. The platform does block-level backups based on a snapshot/incremental basis, that only capture changed data. I was surprised to see a regular period of time where the data changes were happening at a high, sustained rate. Due to the way this system works, that can lead to 1.2TB of stored data per month. The regularity implied a scheduled task, but it is not a fixed interval. It is approximately every 26-32hrs. The disks were performing read operations of ~5MB/s and write operations of ~4.5MB/s, for a period of 3-4hrs. The total written data was ~55-60GB. Reading on TechNet, I am wondering if the following is causing this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/12/14/database-maintenance-in-exchange-2010.aspx#checksumming The somewhat restrictive thing is that the process only happens at most once every 24 hours. I was able to investigate while it was running, finding the following: the process is store.exe it is working on the mailbox database files while running, it is generating .log files (in the mailbox database folder) consistent with database changes the mailbox database is ~60GB in size, which fits with the total data changes on each iteration I have currently switched to a fixed maintenance window, as a test. It's not clear whether this is the cause, as the symptoms fit, but are not conclusive. Does anyone have any suggestions for additional troubleshooting?

• Outlook 2010 search not working after upgrade to windows 8

  After upgrading my computer to Windows 8 Outlook 2010 has stopped displaying search results. Normally you can enter a (part) of a word in the search box on top of the inbox list and it will show you result immediatly. Even mails allready visible on the screen are not found. Somebody familiar with this issue? Update: maybe relevant: I use an Google Apps Pro account. All mail is synced and locally available in Outlook 2010. I did not change this in any way while upgrading, it was working perfectly before. I can scroll through all the e-mails, new mails are coming in as expected. This morning I received two mails from a person by the name of Rosanne. When searching on her name in Outlook it gives me One (1) result, the last mail from today. Update 2: Rebuilding the index seemed to be working. But after another day it stopped working again. No results whatsoever in Outlook search. Rebuilding indexes every day is not an option as it takes several hours. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I use Google Apps Pro. It acts like a Exchange server to outlook. In indexing options (configuration) I added the directories containg the PST from this service (mail is also synced locally)

Hosted servers, where you don’t run the servers, but you let a hosting company run dedicated servers. Multi-tenant, like SharePoint online – this is what I am talking about in this blog post. Also known as SaaS (Software as a Service). The advantages of a cloud solution are undeniable. Availability, (SharePoint line offers a 99.9% uptime SLA) Reliability. Cost. Due to economies of scale, and no need to hire specialized dedicated staff. Scalability. Security. Flexibility – grow or shrink as you need to. If you are seriously considering SharePoint 2010 in the cloud, there are some things you need to know about SharePoint online. What will work - OOTB Customization, collaboration features etc. will work SharePoint Designer 2010 is supported, so no code workflows will work Visual Studio sandbox solutions, client object model will work. What won’t work - SharePoint 2010 online cloud environment supports only sandbox solutions. BCS, business connectivity services is not supported in SharePoint online. What you can do however is to host your services in Azure, and call them using Silverlight. Custom timer jobs will not work. Long story short, get used to Sandbox solutions – and the new way of programming. Sandbox solutions are pretty damn good. Most of the complaints I have heard around sandbox solutions being too restrictive, are uninformed mechanisms of doing things mired in the ways of 2002. .. or you could just live in 2002 too. • Office 2010 Client &ndash; Should I go with 32 bit or 64 bit?

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). As you know, Office 2010 client now comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The question is, should you go with 32 bit or 64 bit? 64 is bigger than 32 .. so 64 is better no? NO! Given a choice, or unless you have a very strong reason not to – GO WITH 32 bit. Why is that? Here is why - 32 bit apps actually work better on 64 bit OS’s in most scenarios due to WoW, and the additional 64 bit VLSW calculations. If you have 2007 installations to support, SharePoint designer 2010 cannot be used to work with SharePoint 2007 sites. So you will have to install SharePoint designer 2007 32bit side by side with SharePoint designer 2010 32 bit side by side. So you cannot mix and match 32 bit and 64 bit here. Of course you can virtualize and not have this problem to begin with :-D. 64 bit office will break many things on your SharePoint experience for that client – example, that fancy datasheet view won’t work on lists. 32 bit office apps don’t have this issue. There are some extreme situations where you DO want 64 bit client apps though. Specifically if you have HUGE excel sheets to work with, then 64 bit office client excel is much better than the equivalent 32 bit excel. Comment on the article ....

• JavaScript Intellisense Improvements with VS 2010

  This is the twentieth in a series of blog posts I’m doing on the upcoming VS 2010 and .NET 4 release.  Today’s blog post covers some of the nice improvements coming with JavaScript intellisense with VS 2010 and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express.  You’ll find with VS 2010 that JavaScript Intellisense loads much faster for large script files and with large libraries, and that it now provides statement completion support for more advanced scenarios compared to previous versions of Visual Studio. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu] Improved JavaScript Intellisense Providing Intellisense for a dynamic language like JavaScript is more involved than doing so with a statically typed language like VB or C#.  Correctly inferring the shape and structure of variables, methods, etc is pretty much impossible without pseudo-executing the actual code itself – since JavaScript as a language is flexible enough to dynamically modify and morph these things at runtime.  VS 2010’s JavaScript code editor now has the smarts to perform this type of pseudo-code execution as you type – which is how its intellisense completion is kept accurate and complete.  Below is a simple walkthrough that shows off how rich and flexible it is with the final release. Scenario 1: Basic Type Inference When you declare a variable in JavaScript you do not have to declare its type.  Instead, the type of the variable is based on the value assigned to it.  Because VS 2010 pseudo-executes the code within the editor, it can dynamically infer the type of a variable, and provide the appropriate code intellisense based on the value assigned to a variable. For example, notice below how VS 2010 provides statement completion for a string (because we assigned a string to the “foo” variable): If we later assign a numeric value to “foo” the statement completion (after this assignment) automatically changes to provide intellisense for a number: Scenario 2: Intellisense When Manipulating Browser Objects It is pretty common with JavaScript to manipulate the DOM of a page, as well as work against browser objects available on the client.  Previous versions of Visual Studio would provide JavaScript statement completion against the standard browser objects – but didn’t provide much help with more advanced scenarios (like creating dynamic variables and methods).  VS 2010’s pseudo-execution of code within the editor now allows us to provide rich intellisense for a much broader set of scenarios. For example, below we are using the browser’s window object to create a global variable named “bar”.  Notice how we can now get intellisense (with correct type inference for a string) with VS 2010 when we later try and use it: When we assign the “bar” variable as a number (instead of as a string) the VS 2010 intellisense engine correctly infers its type and modifies statement completion appropriately to be that of a number instead: Scenario 3: Showing Off Because VS 2010 is psudo-executing code within the editor, it is able to handle a bunch of scenarios (both practical and wacky) that you throw at it – and is still able to provide accurate type inference and intellisense. For example, below we are using a for-loop and the browser’s window object to dynamically create and name multiple dynamic variables (bar1, bar2, bar3…bar9).  Notice how the editor’s intellisense engine identifies and provides statement completion for them: Because variables added via the browser’s window object are also global variables – they also now show up in the global variable intellisense drop-down as well: Better yet – type inference is still fully supported.  So if we assign a string to a dynamically named variable we will get type inference for a string.  If we assign a number we’ll get type inference for a number.  Just for fun (and to show off!) we could adjust our for-loop to assign a string for even numbered variables (bar2, bar4, bar6, etc) and assign a number for odd numbered variables (bar1, bar3, bar5, etc): Notice above how we get statement completion for a string for the “bar2” variable.  Notice below how for “bar1” we get statement completion for a number:   This isn’t just a cool pet trick While the above example is a bit contrived, the approach of dynamically creating variables, methods and event handlers on the fly is pretty common with many Javascript libraries.  Many of the more popular libraries use these techniques to keep the size of script library downloads as small as possible.  VS 2010’s support for parsing and pseudo-executing libraries that use these techniques ensures that you get better code Intellisense out of the box when programming against them. Summary Visual Studio 2010 (and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express) now provide much richer JavaScript intellisense support.  This support works with pretty much all popular JavaScript libraries.  It should help provide a much better development experience when coding client-side JavaScript and enabling AJAX scenarios within your ASP.NET applications.   Hi all I am having a problem with the deployment of Windows 7 from a server with Microsoft Toolkit 2010. When deployment has finished I get a Windows error report which shows following message. FAILURE (Er): 70: CreateObject(Microsoft.BDD.Utility) - Permission denied Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = - 2147023589 0x8007051B I don't get it what Microsoft.BDD.Utility is exactly and when this utility is used (Tasksequence?) ? Can anyone help me on this problem?

• How to rearm Microsoft Office in 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1)

  I'm doing some tests in a 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (SP1). However, after a few days (maybe ~180), Office is now saying that it needs to be activated. I've tried rearming with OSPPREARM.EXE, but I get the following error: "The security processor reported that the maximum allowed number of re-arms has been exceeded. You must re-install the OS before trying to re-arm again." How can I circumvent this, without losing all the data I have in the VM?

• Office 2010 Pro Plus Install Failure - Setup cannot find ProPlusr.WW\ProPrWW2.cab

  I'm attempting to install Office 2010 Pro Plus on a netbook running WWindows 7 Starter but the installer prompts for a file location: Setup cannot find ProPlusr.WW\ProPrWW2.cab. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK. I checked the installation files and can see that the file is present. I selected the folder and clicked OK, but the installer keeps prompting for the file. Has anyone else encountered this?

• Outlook 2010 don't warn on empty subject

  Hello all... I'm using the beta of Outlook 2010, and am wondering how I can set it to STOP warning me on empty subject lines. My family and friends (as opposed to work) I generally send with no subject, and it is REALLY annoying that it constantly asks me "Really send with no subject?" How can I turn this off?? Thanks!
