• Thunderbird: change selected email highlight color (when no focus)

  Is it possible to change, in the message list of Thunderbird 3.0, the highlight color of the selected message when the list does not have the focus? The highlight color for the selected row is blue when the list has the focus, this is very clear. But when the list does not have the focus (e.g. after when you click in the message preview area), the highlight color is dark grey. However, this dark grey doesn't really stand out against the alternating row highlighting in the list (at least not on my laptop's LCD screen), making it difficult for me to quickly locate the message I've selected. So, any way to change this dark grey highlighting?

• Display Resolution Getting Changed Automatically (sometimes) - Win7x64 - ASUS M3A78-EM

  Hi Guys, AMD PC Motherboard - ASUS M3A78-EM (installed VGA drivers from ASUS website - AMD_VGA_V863200_XPVistaWin7.zip) It has VGA and HDMI inbuilt ports (ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics 256MB) VGA is connected to my ViewSonic Monitor. HDMI is connected to LG LCD TV OS - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate Sometimes, when I reboot/start my PC, my ViewSonic display resolution changes and does not show the recommended value(1440x900) in Resolution Settings. The HDMI display works well always. But after multiple reboots/starts, the problem gets fixed automatically and I get back my recommended resolution on ViewSonic display. I am not making any changes to the existing drivers. It sometimes work well, and sometimes doesn't work. Can someone assist me resolving this permanently.

  I have a Samsung 6 series LCD TV which can connect to internet by LAN. When I connect my TV to my Windows 7 laptop which get its internet from AS share it, it can connect to the Internet. My TV can connect to YouTube, but in my country this site is filtered. I want to use an antifilter(proxy) program to bypass the filtering. The problem is the TV does not recognize the proxy port or program. How can I configure the TV or the network to use the proxy?

• VLC Ati Radeon 6870 Ubuntu 12.04 image skewed flicker

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with ATI Radeon 6870 connected to my 40' Sharp TV. The video image is slightly jigged, like breaking a bit and slightly delayed. It just isn't smooth. The computer is very fast, like i7 with 12gb ram. • FTP script download from linux to windows

  I'm using following FTP script on windows xp to download zip files from ubuntu cloud servers. A zip file is created every day on ubutnu servers and I will download it to windows via this ftp script. I run this script everyday manually as I have to edit the last line(mget /usr/backup_02-11-2010.Zip) of the script to match today's date. I want to edit this script so that it will download only today's zip file at the scheduled time without needing to edit it everyday, when scheduled. It's clear that date is appended to the zip files and is in the format dd-mm-yyyy. • Resolution changes when using switch

  So, the "real" resolution of my monitor is 1024x768. That's what I'd use on my docked Windows laptop, and what I'd use on my Xubuntu desktop connected directly. When I connect a switch, to switch between the two, however, the ubuntu machine's resolution changes. Everything's still proportional, and it still thinks it's doing 1024x768, but the icons and fonts appear larger. Not 800x600 larger, but still big. When I used Xubuntu Precise, I created an xorg.conf file to set a resolution of 1280x1024 which made it look the way it does without the switch ... as a workaround. When I upgraded to Trusty, I lost this. I tried to re-create it, but doesn't seem to load my file. Ideally, I'd like to correct the original problem, but I'd settle for being able to up the resolution. I searched for a while, and tried to do it, but I'm giving up ... please help me out. • ATI Catalyst setting to stretch Windows XP start bar across both displays

  I have a Lenovo T400 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series video card, using the ATI Catalyst Control Center to span my Windows XP display over the laptop display and a Dell flatpanel LCD. This works fine, but I'm used to NVIDIA multi-desktop that let me control the "Start bar" to either exist on only 1 screen... be duplicated on both, or (what I want), stretched across both. Is this possible with the ATI card/Catalyst Software? If not, are there any utilities out there that will handle this for me? • How can I set my resolution to 1280x1024 on an Acer Aspire Revo 3700?

  I've just set up a new nettop computer (Acer Aspire Revo 3700: CPU:Atom D525, GPU:Nvidia ION2). I've just made a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 using the standard USB pendrive method. Almost everything works OK, but the graphics are not OK: the recommended Nvidia driver is activated but the monitor is not detected, so the resolution is wrong. How can I make Ubuntu detect my monitor? How can I get the proper resolution (1280x1024) in Ubuntu? I know that my monitor is not a CRT but an LCD: it's a BenQ, model T905, with 1280x1024 resolution at 60Hz, connected via a normal VGA cable. DVI or HDMI is not an option. When I go to SystemPrefsMonitors, I get: It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? YES NO If I say NO then I get a window: or for YES I get this: In both cases I don't see that I can fix this problem. The main reason for getting this new computer was that I was sick of having graphics problems on the old one with a very ugly solution that didn't give me hardware support - but at least I got the resultion. Why is this so difficult... sigh!

• Why is my fresh install of 12.04 running slow?

  Hey guys I'm a new linux user, I figured it would be the best for the laptop I just purchased because it's said to be faster than Windows 7. I'm currently dual-booting with Windows 7 Professial and Ubuntu 12.04. The laptop I am using is the LG X Note P210 Specs: Intel Core i5 470UM Dual Core clocked at 1.33GHz 12.5" HD LED LCD Screen at 1366 by 768 4GB DDR3 @ 1333 MHz RAM Integrated Intel HD Graphics Card 4 Cell Battery with 3150mAh It comes loaded Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, it runs fine on that but my Ubuntu 12.04 runs slower than it and I don't understand why, it definitely has decent specs to run even a 64-bit operating system and do some gaming. Granted I know it's not the best but for a laptop it does the job so Ubuntu should work especially since it's said to make older units with worse specs run even better. I'm not all that familiar with coding and all so what are things I can do to optimize speed without overclocking? Boot up is fine, its program response time I believe, once Im in the actual OS, it lags, slows down, apps stop working, take forever to load up apps.

  Our company wants to be able to have LCD TVs displaying TV with the ability to add an overlay, like a stock ticker at the bottom of the screen, where human resources can add content to be displayed. I have been trying to nail down the correct terminology for this and come across terms like Keying, Compositing, Live Broadcast Graphics Presentation, and Hardware Overlay but I don't know which of these terms is truly the correct way to refer to what I am trying to do. Black Magic offers a product that seems like it can do what I am looking for but their product seems like it is geared for a totally different purpose than what I would be using it for. Compix also seems to have a product that would do what I need but again it seems like killing a fly with a sledge hammer. How can I to take an HDMI TV broadcast and overlay arbitrary content in real time?

• How do I get my programs to communicate with each other

  I'm basically just getting started with programming. The problem I have with progressing is that I have a hard time learning stuff just for the sake of knowing them - I do better when there's a problem to be solved or a task to be completed so I can learn 'on the job'. So I'm interested in starting some interesting project. I know the basics of Python, Java, Matlab and some C++ aswell and I know enough about microcontrollers to make LED blink etc. The type of stuff I'm looking for is for example scraping some weather forecast site (with Python) and outputting the chance of rain to a LCD display, or a program that makes chrome open and log in to facebook if I say "HAL, time for facebook", or more generally, a program that reads serial/USB input, looks for certain sequences and sends instructions to some other program if it finds one. Do you open some kind of shared stream in which one program reads and one writes? What do I need to read up on to do accomplish this myself? I have no experience with linux or the linux terminal, but looking over peoples shoulders makes me suspect that's what people use. Is that correct?

• Can a UPS give off an EM field capable of interfering with desktop components?

  I own an APC Back-UPS ES 750; it's about 4 years old, and is the only major component remaining in a question that has been boggling me for the last 18 months. (Yep, I originally posted this question about the possessed desktop, and while I marked a solution and closed the question, a week later the same problem returned) I've tried plugging the desktop straight into the wall (but left the other components plugged into the UPS) and the desktop still froze. Is it possible that the EM field generated by the UPS is interfering with my desktop components and causing these otherwise-unpredictable system freezes? To me this sounds like a long shot, but aside from my twin LCD monitors, that just about takes care of all the major components.

  I'm using a 52" 1080p LCD screen to monitor Nagios, positioned where most of the users can see it. Using the default Nagios web view sort of sucks, since you need to increase the text size a decent amount so it's legible from a distance, and then the "Current Network Status", "Host Status Totals", and other boxes along the top take up the majority of the screen realestate; you can't really see the list of host details. Is there a custom view for Nagios, or a plugin, or something available which is meant to display Nagios details on a large screen with large text?

• Shortcut Keys for external monitor with XP

  Last night my laptop (samsung nc20 running XP) fell off the table and the screen cracked leaving me unable to see anything. I have arranged for a it to be repaired but want to make a back up of several folders before it gets sent away. I was planning to use my parents LG LCD tv as an external monitor so I can see what I am doing when copying things to but after plugging it in nothing seems to happen (works instantly on another laptop running vista) and hotkeys seem to be of no use at all. Does anyone know the series of shortcut keys I will need to do to get XP to use an external monitor? Thanks in advance

• Grub: Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported

  I'm trying to change the resolution on my base shell (the Ctrl+Alt+1) shell in Debian so that it supports my ViewSonic monitor. The shell appears really fuzzy when it is displayed on my lcd monitor, but GRUB looks fine when it's displayed. In I tried changing part of the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT to 'vga=ask', and now I get the error on booting up 'Legacy 'ask' parameter no longer supported' Has this 'vga=ask' value been changed to something else? Note, I tried setting it to 'vga=782' after finding a list of screen modes here and the shell font got real huge for a few seconds during boot up, and then switched back to it's awful fuzzy self again, when I went to use the Debian Bash shell. UPDATE Tried suggestion in this question, it works without fuzziness until the last resolution change which displays the user login to the shell.

• Why do I have no TTY on a basic Ubuntu 9.10 server install?

  I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 Server several times on a bog standard 1RU server and each time I finish the install and reboot I see GRUB run and am then presented with a black screen. The machine is running just fine, as I am able to SSH in, but I can't see anything on the attached monitor. I have a simple LCD screen connected via VGA and a signal is apparently being output to it, as it doesn't go asleep. Looking at /var/log/syslog I see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 rsyslogd-2039: Could no open output file '/dev/xconsole' [try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2039 ] However, I later see: Mar 24 14:57:44 bridge5 kernel: [ 0.001368] console [tty0] enabled Any thoughts? • 1080p Screen resolution problem after 10.04 to 12.04 update

  I have a Samsung LCD 40" with a NVidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Card. I recently upgraded from 10.04 to 12.04 and the best resolution I can get is 1360x768. I've tried the propietary drivers available on the repository kmod:nvidia_current kmod:nvidia_173_updates kmod:nvidia_current_updates kmod:nvidia_96 kmod:nvidia_96_updates kmod:nvidia_173 I've also downloaded latest from NVidia's Web, version: 295.40. But still no luck. With Nouveau driver, I can only get 1024x768. I know there is no problem with my hardware (video card, cable and monitor), I was using it perfectly on 10.04. Can anybody suggest something else I could try, to get my 1920x1080 resolution back? Thanks in advance. • Monitor resolution messed up somehow

  I purchased the Westinghouse 22" LCD LCM-22w3 a few years ago, and now it's been acting up on me. I just booted into Windows 7(without changing any settings), and the default resolution is 1600x1024, and it allows me to select a refresh rate of up to 85 Hz(it didn't let me do that). I usually have my resolution set to 1680x1050 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Now, that resolution does not even appear in the list. Does anyone have any idea of what could be the problem and how to fix it? Edit: I am not sure if this will help, but when I go to change the screen resolution, the monitor is known as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor". It used to be referred to as "Generic PnP Monitor). I tried to disable Generic Non-PnP Monitor, but when I restart, it uses that monitor again. Edit 2: I created a custom .inf file using Powerstrip, but that does not work either. The monitor settings are being stubborn.

  Video card is: AMD HD 6950 My video card comes with 1xHDMI, 2xDVI, and 2xMini DV ports. I have always used VGA and DVI only. I have the HDMI already connected. I want to hook up 2 more display. One of the display can take a VGA only, the other is an LCD TV so it has VGA, HDMI, Component. I am wondering: 1) What is the best output port to use for the second two monitors? The miniDV or the DVI? 2) I need to run a long cable maybe 15-25 feet, this might change the answer to question 1, is an HDMI long cable 20+ ft going to be better than a 20ft DVI or miniDV ?
