• 12.04 LTS Apache2 writing files from webpage at runtime has no effect - possible read/write permissions?

  I'm running 12.04LTS with Apache and Mono in VirtualBox, with the goal of hosting a web app (coded in ASP.NET and C#) on my local network. The scripts on the page are able to successfully read from text files in the same directory as my site (/var/www/mysite/) but do not seem to be able to write. I'm sure the code works, because it did with my testing in Visual Web Developer on Windows. I don't get any errors, but when I click the button on the loaded webpage, the text file in question does not change. I'm fairly new to Linux in general, so I'm not too familiar with how to set permissions properly, and it may be a permissions issue. Unfortunately, I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution that worked, but I've tried (perhaps incorrectly) changing the owner of the files in question to www-root, changing the mode to a+rw, but sadly to no avail. I have tried everything here but it doesn't work: Whats the simplest way to edit and add files to "/var/www"? I hope someone can help me out.

• How to upgrade ClamAV on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS?

  I'm running a server on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, and when I installed ClamAV via aptitude, it installed version 0.94. That version has now been EOL'ed, but when I run "aptitude upgrade", it doesn't update ClamAV to the more recent version (0.96). I then followed these instructions on Installing ClamAV from the PPA, but when I did that, I get a message saying "The following packages have been kept back: ... clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam ..." Does anyone know how to get Ubuntu 8.04 to do this update via aptitude or apt-get (I'm hoping to avoid having to compile from source, etc.)?

• What to have in sources.list on an Ubuntu LTS server (production)?

  I have several Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers in production and I'm using apticron to check that my software is up to date, security-wise. However, by default, Ubuntu has the lucid-updates repository enabled. This means lots of low-priority updates (such as this) that I don't need and thus, extra work for me. Is it okay to just remove the lucid-updates line(s) in sources.list? I still get security updates via lucid-security, right? • How to get a remote desktop / X11 with ubuntu 10.04 LTS from mac os x?

  I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 and I have X11 installed. I also have ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on a remote machine. I have root privileges. So far I haven't really installed anything besides the operating system. This was done in an amazon aws type of way. I see people talking about getting gnome or a "remote desktop" type of thing working, but I'm not sure how to go about this. I connected and then typed in gnome-session but nothing happened. Maybe I don't have that thing installed yet? Can someone point me in the right direction? Also, is it possible to just start an X11 session with a single app, like notepad or a file and folder browser?

  I'm wanting to get my firewall on my new webserver to be as secure as it needs to be. After I did research for iptables, I came across UFW (Uncomplicated FireWall). This looks like a better way for me to setup a firewall on Ubuntu Server 10 LTS and seeing that it's part of the install, it seems to make sense. My server will have Nginx, FastCGI and MySQL on it. I also want to be allow SSH access (obviously). So I'm curious to know exactly how I should set up UFW and is there anything else I need to take into consideration? After doing research, I found an article that explains it this way: # turn on ufw ufw enable # log all activity (you'll be glad you have this later) ufw logging on # allow port 80 for tcp (web stuff) ufw allow 80/tcp # allow our ssh port ufw allow 5555 # deny everything else ufw default deny # open the ssh config file and edit the port number from 22 to 5555, ctrl-x to exit nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config # restart ssh (don't forget to ssh with port 5555, not 22 from now on) /etc/init.d/ssh reload This all seems to make sense to me. • Is Subversion(SVN) supported on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit?

  I've setup subversion on Ubuntu 10.04, but can't get authentication to work. I believe all my config files are setup correctly, However I keep getting prompted for credentials on a SVN CHECKOUT. Like there is an issue with apache2 talking to svnserve. If I allow anonymous access checkout works fine. • How to determine the root cause of a system lockup on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS?

  I'm currently working a project that involves setting up a PC/104 stack and running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. We need to use the PC/104 stack because its an embedded application - and we're required to use a DeviceNet peripheral card to communicate to other devices. (DeviceNet is just a protocol on top of CAN.) Anyway, the following hardware is on the stack: Kontron MOPSPM104 with a 1GHz Intel Celeron processor ConnectTech FlashDrive/104 4GB Industrial Temp (-40 to +85 C) Woodhead (Molex) PC104DVNIO DeviceNet card A run of the mill 104 power supply The Kontron Board offers two serial ports, one VGA out, and two USB ports. The DeviceNet card is an ISA card. Because of this (per the User's Guide for the Kontron Board), I have manually set the IRQs in the BIOS to be appropriately configured, and turned off ACPI in both the BIOS and passed the appropriate flag in GRUB. I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 desktop, 32 bit. The problem that I'm having is that, from time to time, the entire 104 stack locks up. This only seems to happen in two cases, both of which we're running GNOME. We have a custom application that uses the DeviceNet card, and the system will lock up, or (more frequently) when we're running Firefox and either surfing for some information or trying to test it - typically by streaming video from a IP-camera. The reason I ask this questions is I cannot determine the root cause of this lockup. The IRQs appear to correctly configured in the BIOS and as the Kernel sees them, and nothing is logged to dmesg. If you all could help me determine the root cause of this lockup, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  I'm trying to create a VM, using VMWare Player, with an ISO image of Ubuntu Server 12.04 (LTS). The machine I'm doing the installation on has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU, and runs 64-bit Windows 7 I managed to create the VM (gave username, password, configured network etc), but I can't install Ubuntu Server. First I get this alert : Binary translation is incompatible with long mode on this platform. Disabling long mode. Without long mode support, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code. For more details see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. When I click OK, I get another alert : This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible. This host supports Intel VT-x, but Intel VT-x is disabled. Intel VT-x might be disabled if it has been disabled in the BIOS/firmware settings or the host has not been power-cycled since changing this setting. (1) Verify that the BIOS/firmware settings enable Intel VT-x and disable 'trusted execution.' (2) Power-cycle the host if either of these BIOS/firmware settings have been changed. (3) Power-cycle the host if you have not done so since installing VMware Player. (4) Update the host's BIOS/firmware to the latest version. For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. Then, when I click OK, my VM exists, and I get back to the VMWare Player home screen.   I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and the Scipy stack. I tried to set in matplotlibrc to use sans-serif family, arial font as default. While this has been working on my Windows computer, it reported the following warning: UserWarning: findfont: Font family ['sans-serif'] not found. Falling back to Bitstream Vera Sans (prop.get_family(), self.defaultFamily[fontext])) And it seems that the font is either not installed, or in a wrong name. I think I have installed the TrueType font (by googling), but I'd really appreciate it if anyone could help me to set the font family in the system with the name 'sans-serif' and find the relevant font files that belongs to this folder. • Ubuntu won't boot after initializing the Build Environment for Android

  My laptop worked perfectly util I initialized the build environment for Android. The GUI won't start. It looks like some kinds of graphics card problems. I tried to fix it but after trying a lot of solutions on the internet nothing worked. (I only know basic linux stuffs.) I've already reinstalled the OS. However, I still want to build the Android from source. Any idea what might cause the problem? any workaround? • How to (hardware) RAID 10 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with 4 drives and motherboard with RAID contoller

  I have 4 500GB hard drives. I set up a RAID 10 in BIOS, much like shown here: http://www.supermicro.com/manuals/other/RAID_SATA_ESB2.pdf Then I followed these instructions: http://www.unrest.ca/Knowledge-Base/configuring-mdadm-raid10-for-ubuntu-910 Basically I cannot get it to work. I go through the instructions when I get to the "partition" section of the install, creating 4 RAID 1's (2 partitions on each drive, one for primary and one for swap space), then combining to make a RAID 10. Unfortunately it still shows 2 partitions, one 500 GB and another being 36GB for some reason. Any ideas? I think best would be if anyone had found good instructions (step by step) for how to do this...I've been googling for hours and haven't found anything...

• How to get HTTP preseed to work correctly on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid)?

  Installation media: ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso I tried a lot of different boot parameters, but either the installer ignored the preseed configuration, or it boot itself directly as LiveCD. An example of the boot parameters I've tried: auto url=http://mydomain.com/path/preseed.cfg boot=casper only-ubiquity initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- If I remove only-ubiquity, it boots as a LiveCD. If I remove boot=casper, it won't boot. If I add vga=normal locale=en_US console-setup/layoutcode=us console-setup/ask_detect=false interface=auto, it still can't do automatic install. If I remove auto, it's the same. What is the correct boot parameters for launching such an installation? From the apache log of the server hosting preseed.cfg, I see that the installer has no problems fetching the preseed file. My preseed file is almost identical to the one at https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt. Moreover, I have run debconf-set-selections -c preseed.cfg to ensure that the preseed file is correct.

  I am using Wicd and can successfully connect to my ADSL router (Thomson TG 787) using WPA PSK. But with regular interval I lose the ability to connect to Internet. I can ping the GW and can actually ping servers on the Internet but not connect to them using HTTP (Tested with both Firefox and wget). I would suspect the router unless for the fact that the problem does not show up when running Windows XP on the same computer and also, when the problem arises, a simple disconnect/connect in Wicd solves the problem, which does not involve the router (Except for the DHCP request). I have searched Ubuntu forums without luck, most problems described relate to specific network drivers or other problems. Does anyone have the same experience with Linux/Ubuntu and WLAN?

  Hi I'm working on my bachelor thesis and for that I need to host a node.js web application on AWS, in order to avoid costs I'm using a t1.micro instance with 30GB disk space (from what I know it's the maximum I get in the free tier) which is barely used. But instead I have problems with memory consumption, it's using all of it. I tried the approach of creating a virtual swap area as mentioned at Why don't EC2 ubuntu images have swap? with these commands: sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swapfile bs=1M count=2048 && sudo chmod 600 /var/swapfile && sudo mkswap /var/swapfile && echo /var/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0 | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab && sudo swapon -a But this swap area isn't used somehow. Is something missing in this approach or is there another process of reducing the memory consumption in these type of AWS instances? Bottom-line: This originates server freezes and crashes and that's what I want to stop either by using the swap, reducing memory usage or both.

• Context switches much slower in new linux kernels

  We are looking to upgrade the OS on our servers from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Unfortunately, it seems that the latency to run a thread that has become runnable has significantly increased from the 2.6 kernel to the 3.2 kernel. In fact the latency numbers we are getting are hard to believe. Let me be more specific about the test. We have a program that has two threads. The first thread gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC) and then signals a condition variable once a second. The second thread waits on the condition variable and wakes up when it is signaled. It then gets the current time (in ticks using RDTSC). The difference between the time in the second thread and the time in the first thread is computed and displayed on the console. After this the second thread waits on the condition variable once more. So, we get a thread to thread signaling latency measurement once a second as a result. In linux 2.6.32, this latency is somewhere on the order of 2.8-3.5 us, which is reasonable. In linux 3.2.0, this latency is somewhere on the order of 40-100 us. I have excluded any differences in hardware between the two host hosts. They run on identical hardware (dual socket X5687 {Westmere-EP} processors running at 3.6 GHz with hyperthreading, speedstep and all C states turned off). We are changing the affinity to run both threads on physical cores of the same socket (i.e., the first thread is run on Core 0 and the second thread is run on Core 1), so there is no bouncing of threads on cores or bouncing/communication between sockets. The only difference between the two hosts is that one is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with kernel 2.6.32-28 (the fast context switch box) and the other is running the latest Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with kernel 3.2.0-23 (the slow context switch box). Have there been any changes in the kernel that could account for this ridiculous slow down in how long it takes for a thread to be scheduled to run?

• Upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 on netbook: now or later?

  I began with installing 9.04 in a netbook (Asus EeePC 1000H), upgraded to 9.10 and have now Lucid Lynx 10.04 (LTS). Most things tested run pretty good, with the most notable exception being wireless network due to the hardware which I first tested after the last major upgrade and a few times before giving up (failed to maintain connection to WPA2 networks). Other nuisances are not as important (e.g. some hotkeys work, a couple of them don't), but given that most everything works I'm concerned with doing an upgrade to find most things have been broken and I have to go back and dig up on how to get it to work... Once in a while, I look up for some posts elsewhere to read up on problems and to find out if they're tame enough to justify an upgrade to 10.10. I'm not in a rush, but I'm not interested in being too left behind some time from now that an upgrade becomes too costly or downright impossible (many things formatted too differently). I'm not even sure if it's possible to "easily" upgrade from LTS to LTS release... Therefore I ask if it's (in principle) possible to skip releases and only do a major upgrade much later on. For example, is it possible (or advisable) to do an upgrade only when the next LTS comes out (a couple of years from now)? Or is it preferable not to skip releases at all?

  which graphics driver will solve my laptop screen display problem? Recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS on my laptop and upgraded it to 12.10, through 12.04.1 LTS. I am not able to get the display right, from the beginning. During boot laptop screen is all green, and images / videos are not getting displayed properly when logged in. Actual problem started last week, when this laptop was with Windows Vista (preloaded), and I tried to update Nvidia graphics drivers. something went wrong and I couldn't find a way to fix, so decided to install Ubuntu. Over last week, installed / re-installed Ubuntu many times with various drivers with no success. Laptop : Dell Inspiron 1420 Installed OS : ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Current, Ubuntu 12.10) Nvidia driver : GeForce 8400M GS (tried in previous installations; not installed now) Print-screen was not able to catch this issue as mentioned in the comment, so I am posting screen photos.

  When I ssh into my Mythbuntu box, I get this message: Welcome to Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-32-generic x86_64) * Documentation: https://help.ubuntu.com/ New release '12.10' available. Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it. Last login: <redacted> $ But I don't intend to upgrade to 12.10, because Mythbuntu recommends using LTS releases only. How do I suppress the "New release '12.10' available" message? I don't want to be notified until the next LTS release is available. I've already gone to Update Manager Settings Updates and selected "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version: For long-term support versions", but that didn't get rid of this message.

  I am currently PXE booting a bunch a machine, via the diskless function in ubuntu. What is the best practice when upgrading the image from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS? I've currently made a copy of the image with cp -arpv to ensure that i can switch back to the old image, if something is wrong in the new image. However do-release-upgrade is not available in the diskeless image. Any good ideas on what to do? Best regards.
