  I know what whoopsie is from the answers to What is the 'whoopsie' process and how can I remove it? I do not want to stop error reporting, as I think that error reporting is the minimum a user should do to try to help Ubuntu. But since the upgrade to 13.10, whoopsie has grown up quite chatty. • What is the evidence that an API has exceeded its orthogonality in the context of types?

  Wikipedia defines software orthogonality as: orthogonality in a programming language means that a relatively small set of primitive constructs can be combined in a relatively small number of ways to build the control and data structures of the language. The term is most-frequently used regarding assembly instruction sets, as orthogonal instruction set. Jason Coffin has defined software orthogonality as Highly cohesive components that are loosely coupled to each other produce an orthogonal system. C.Ross has defined software orthogonality as: the property that means "Changing A does not change B". An example of an orthogonal system would be a radio, where changing the station does not change the volume and vice-versa. Now there is a hypothesis published in the the ACM Queue by Tim Bray - that some have called the Bánffy Bray Type System Criteria - which he summarises as: Static typings attractiveness is a direct function (and dynamic typings an inverse function) of API surface size. Dynamic typings attractiveness is a direct function (and static typings an inverse function) of unit testing workability. Now Stuart Halloway has reformulated Banfy Bray as: the more your APIs exceed orthogonality, the better you will like static typing My question is: What is the evidence that an API has exceeded its orthogonality in the context of types? Clarification Tim Bray introduces the idea of orthogonality and APIs. Where you have one API and it is mainly dealing with Strings (ie a web server serving requests and responses), then a uni-typed language (python, ruby) is 'aligned' to that API - because the the type system of these languages isn't sophisticated, but it doesn't matter since you're dealing with Strings anyway. He then moves on to Android programming, which has a whole bunch of sensor APIs, which are all 'different' to the web server API that he was working on previously. Because you're not just dealing with Strings, but with different types, the API is non-orthogonal. Tim's point is that there is a empirical relationship between your 'liking' of types and the API you're programming against. (ie a subjective point is actually objective depending on your context).

• shader3 not enabled error in Eve Online Crucible

  I'm a complete noob at this, and have been trying everything to run Eve Online within Ubuntu 11.10. I have installed through Winetricks no problem, and have enabled the virtual windows desktop within Winetricks. My problem is that after the splash screen for Eve, I get an error message telling me that shader 3 is not enabled. I have an old GEForce 7300LE, but it does support shader 3. I have also tried a few different drivers with no luck. I have tried looking within the NVidia X setting, but can't find anything. Running Eve on Windows 7 is the only reason I'm still using windows, so any help to run it on Ubuntu would be very appreciated, as I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out something which should be simple.

Basically, we're designing an Online Store and I am designing the class structure for ordering a product and want some clarification on what I have so far: So a customer comes, selects their product, chooses the quantity and selects 'Purchase' (I am using the Facade Pattern - So subsystems execute when this action is performed). My class structure: < Order > < Product > <Customer > There is no inheritance, more Association < Order has < Product , < Customer has < Order . Does this structure look ok? I've noticed that I don't handle the "Quantity" separately, I was just going to add this into the "Product" class, but, do you think it should be a class of it's own? Hope someone can help.

• Is online freelance work viable by American standards?

  I've always been curious about trying out online freelance sites... it would be nice to work from home, feel independent, get to choose what I want to work on, get to work on different technologies, lose the PHB, etc. However I never really gave them a chance because I'm used to American rates and assumed that I would be competing with people from India, Russia, China, etc. that would severely undercut me, and it wouldn't be viable for me.   the new online accounts doesn't have the advanced settings as the empathy accounts had. How do i change the google server to connect to? i read here: https://wiki.gnome.org/Empathy/FAQ I can't connect to my Google Talk account Your router is probably blocking DNS SRV requests. If possible you should try to fix it. If you can't, the easiest work around is to set "talk.google.com" in the "Server" field of the advanced section of the account. So i think this might fix my problem, or maybe just an option to shift the port it connects to. and is there anyone that knows how to use join any IRC channels with Empathy? i have installed the plugin, but i don't know how to join a channel.
