• Correctly configure nameservers with cPanel

  I just bought a VPS with cPanel/WHM. My hosting provider gave me 3 dedicated IP addresses with my plan. I read on the internet that I should use 2 IPs for my nameservers and the other one as the main IP for all my shared accounts. Could you tell me why I should do that ? What are the advantages of using IP addresses only for nameservers and another one only for my shared accounts instead of using the same IP for all my nameservers and shared account ? I'm asking because I don't want to use an IP for nothing. Thank you.

• Known Hosts ECDSA Host Key Multiple Domains on One IP

  Hello, world!, I have a VPS set up with multiple domain names pointing to it. Arbitrarily, I like to access it via SSH through the domain name I'm dealing with. So for example, if I'm doing something with example1.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected], and if I'm working with example2.com, I'll log in with ssh [email protected]. They both point to the same user on the same machine. However, because SSH keeps track of the server's fingerprint, it tells me that there is an offending host key, and makes me confirm access. $ ssh [email protected] Warning: the ECDSA host key for 'example2.com' differs from the key for the IP address '123.123.123.123' Offending key for IP in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:33 Matching host key in /home/me/.ssh/known_hosts:38 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? • Debian 5 is randomly shutting down.

I reinstalled it several times, the hosts moved me to a different physical box, check the install image and said everyone else also uses it and is fine. • I want to version control my entire slice

  I'm renting a slice (i.e., a VPS) from Slicehost. I've a spent a day or two filling up /usr with my favorite packages, /etc with configs and init scripts, and so on. Now I want to: save this whole setup somewhere (e.g., to load onto another machine). see what changes I've made to which files revert changes, tag revisions, and all that other good version control stuff Saving a disk image gives me (1), but not (2) and (3). Using Subversion (svn import / svn://someotherhost) might give me all three, but I expect problems if I actually try to check a project out into / and maintain .svn directories in root-owned areas. And to load my setup onto a fresh slice, I'd need to install an svn client on it first. Is there a good way to do what I want to do?

• OpenVPN Setup - Service Won't Start

  I'm in the process of setting up OpenVPN on a VPS running Debian 6. I've walked step-by-step through this guide twice now, and I can't get the service to start. When I start the service, the error reported in the log file is: Cannot ioctl TUNSETIFF tun: Inappropriate ioctl for device (errno=25) I've searched the web a few times and I'm not finding anything helpful. I've tried: Changing file permissions: no change Deleting the file: get an error stating no file found (errno=2) Making a folder named "tun": get an error stating no file found (errno=2) I've wiped my installation and completed the steps verbatim twice now. I get no errors along the way, just the error above within my log file. The contents of my server.conf file are listed below, minus all the comments for brevity. • Server memory issues, and expected level of service from hosting company

  I'm involved in maintaining an Ubuntu VPS which runs our django websites (nginx/apache/mod_wsgi) and we've been having some memory spikes which have either caused the database to die, or induced kernel panic when the memory management system can't find any killable processes. I'm working on fixing the memory spikes, but I'm wondering whether there's anything I can do to better deal with the problem if it occurs again. Are there any tools I could use to detect the memory spikes and then, say, kill the offending process and email the server admin to fix it up? Killing off one website so that the server can remain operational is certainly preferable to the whole thing falling over. Also, we were charged $600 for after-hours service because we had to get the hosting company to restart the server - is this standard practice among hosting companies? Another provider I work with provides a panel with which I can stop and start the server myself, and given that a restart was all that was needed, $600 seems mightily excessive. (That's NZD, it's around $445 USD)

  I own a VPS server. At the moment I havent installed any FTP server on it, I am using SSH and SFTP only. I am using Debian 6 Squeeze and Apache2 service. The web directory is in /var/www/ Well, I wanted to create different FTP accounts and give access to some people to them (one account per user). In my web directory I have an structure like this: /var/www/mtaplugins/music/mplayer/music/ /var/www/mapuploader/ and more folders inside. I want to create an FTP account which should be able to just access one of those folders and the folders inside them. I would appreciate some recomendations or stept to follow before installing anything or doing anythong, because I dont have any idea about this. I was thinking in using ProFTPd but as I saw in the documentation it would just create an account for each user in my server, and I want to not create more users (I always use root) Thanks in advance

• Would NetBSD be a good choice for a web server?

  I've the choice of crafting a NetBSD image for a Xen VPS host, and was just wanting to play around as I like BSD and wished to use it for my general web hosting. I will be hosting a low-mid traffic website and maybe a few other simple services. Do you think NetBSD would be a sufficient choice, in terms of general performance of multiple system users and fair amount of traffic to Apache compared to what Linux could normally handle?   Hello, I recently bought a VPS with Windows Server 2003 x64 Standard PreInstalled. the reseller gave me the Username and Password for the Parallels Power Panel and also it's address (something like this: https://??.???.???.??:4643/) I've just reinstalled the container using Virtuozzo (first I stopped the container, then reinstalled the container and the last log message was Reinstalling...) now after 2 hours I can't access the ControlPanel. what's wrong? is it normal? how long does it take to reinstall the container? why the ControlPanel is not accessible now? I'm kinda noob. Please help

• What is the lightest, basic Email Server for Linux?

  I would like to install an extremely small mail server on my VPS and I am only interested in it sending out mail (activation links) from my web site. I don't need it to support mailboxes or incoming mail (although having that option for the future might be nice). The main requirement is that I don't have to worry about monitoring it as often and protecting against people bouncing messages off my server or wasting resources with incoming mail. I just want to send mail out. So something small that only listens on localhost would be ideal. The other requirement is that it is documented so I can learn how to set it up and manage it.

• Apache has no rights to unzip file uploaded by DirectAdmin created FTP user

  I know similar things have been asked a thousandfold, but I can't seem to figure it out.. I have recently started renting a VPS. It runs DirectAdmin. I created a reseller account in the admin account, and created a new user (with FTP account) with the reseller account. I logged in with FTP as the created user and uploaded a zip file and a php file which will extract the zip. But when running the script in the browser I get "Permission denied" errors however. Probably because Apache is not in the same group as the users FTP account. Now my question is: How can I solve this once and for all, so that I don't have to do it again for every new user account I create through DirectAdmin?

  So these days with talks about having hacked machines being used for malware spreading and botnet C&C, the one issue that is not clear to me is what do the law enforcement agencies do once they have identified a server as being a source or controller of attack/APT and that server is a VPS on my cluster/datacenter? Do they take away the entire machine? This option seems to have a lot of collateral damage associated with it, so I am not sure what happens and what are the best practices for system admins for helping law enforcement with its job while keeping our jobs!

  I have a drupal-based website on a VPS with 1GB RAM and 1Ghz processor share. The webserver is nginx along with php-fastcgi. Currently I am using 10 nginx and 13 php-fastcgi processes. The server load is high most of the times while half of the RAM is unused. The CPU usage rarely reaches 80%. I have tried some other combinations of nginx/php-fastcgi but am not sure what is the optimal combination because I am quite ignorant about what's going on below the surface. So I appreciate if you could share your experience or give me some clues.

Standard that I've ever worked with before on shared hosting was cPanel, but as the majority of my work I plan on doing from now on will be using NodeJS and Python/Flask, I'd like to avoid needing to install Apache/MySQL/PHP. What would be my best bet to help manage a mail server other than cPanel? Or even other specific server settings that may come in handy later? Plan on using Ubuntu if that counts for anything.

• Site faster on 1 core/1GB ram than on 8 core/32GB ram wth?

  Both sites are US based. I'm located in Europe. http://198.105.209.13/ <==== site that loads tons faster on 1 core and 1gb ram ONLY (Cent OS VPS) http://108.61.35.219/ <== site is located on my dedicated server with i7-3770 cpu and 32 gb ram (Windows) and is slow as hell Even if faster site is on linux it shouldn't make such a big difference in page load seriously. Does anyone know what could be a hiccup on the dedicated server? It's just unbelievable to me that site loads faster on 1 core cpu than on dedicated server. Note that site is pretty much only thing running on dedicated server. It has 1gbps connection.

• Why do some servers have so many processes running?

  I have two VPS servers but they have drastically different amounts of memory usage and processes running. I'm still new to running linux servers so I'm having trouble figuring out what is going on and what I can do to fix it. Both are Debian 5 32bit installs. On one server with 128MB of ram and a single CPU core I have a full server running in only 84MB of RAM. The other server has 512MB (quad core CPU) and it has nothing running but core processes yet its still using 94MB of RAM. Does one have a different kind of virtualization technology that requires more linux core processes or what?

  Hi Everybody, I have just installed Magento on Windows using WAMP. Installation was successfull without any errors or warnings. When i browse administration page, i can see login screen. After entering the correct credentials it is not displaying me the Dashboard/Control Panel. Its displaying the same login page. If i enter wrong credentials, its authenticating and displaying a message as "invalid username or password" I am unable to determine the issue. If anybody has been through this issue and solved it please help me. How can i login Magento administration. Note: While installation i have selected session=Database. Will that be a issue? • What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

  This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.
