• Why can XSLT not parse this XML?

  Taking the XSLT and XML from this page as an example: http://www.w3schools.com/xsl/xsl_transformation.asp I have an xml file which contains (above example modified): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?> <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="cdcatalog.xsl"?> <catalog xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://tempuri.org/"> <cd> In my case, the output contains nothing when the XSLT/XML is processed by the browser. The moment I remove the attributes from the element, it works. Problem is, I don't really have the option of pre-processing those attributes out of the file. Can anyone explain how to force the XSLT to work with the XML as is, please? After all, those attributes seem fairly standard. Many thanks, Matt.

• SqlParameter contructor compiler overload choice

  When creating a SqlParameter (.NET3.5) or OdbcParameter I often use the SqlParameter(string parameterName, Object value) constructor overload to set the value in one statement. When I tried passing a literal 0 as the value paramter I was initially caught by the C# compiler choosing the (string, OdbcType) overload instead of (string, Object). MSDN actually warns about this gotcha in the remarks section, but the explanation confuses me. Why does the C# compiler decide that a literal 0 parameter should be converted to OdbcType rather than Object? The warning also says to use Convert.ToInt32(0) to force the Object overload to be used. It confusingly says that this converts the 0 to an "Object type". But isn't 0 already an "Object type"? The Types of Literal Values section of this page seems to say literals are always typed and so inherit from System.Object. This behavior doesn't seem very intuitive given my current understanding? Is this something to do with Contra-variance or Co-variance maybe?

• URL Rewrite in htaccess problem

  Am rather new to this world of htaccess redirects.Am trying to force all redirects in my Zend MVC to my https but I get a requested URL not found error on requests that dont go though the index controller Example https://www.example.com/auth/register gives a requested URL /auth/register not found error. However if I remove the https redirect rule it works fine over http. If I adjust the URL to https://www.example.com/index.php/auth/register it works fine. The URL https://www.example.com/index/faq works just fine since it goes through the index controller. • Any clever way to fix 'string or binary data would be truncated' warning with LINQ

  Is there a clever way to determine which field is causing 'string or binary data would be truncated' with LINQ. I've always ended up doing it manually by stepping through a debugger, but with a batch using 'SubmitChanges' I have to change my code to inserting a single row to find the culprit in a batch of rows. Am I missing something or in this day and age do I really have to still use a brute force method to find the problem. Please dont give me advice on avoiding this error in future (unless its something much cleverer than 'validate your data'). The source data is coming from a different system where I dont have full control anyway - plus I want to be lazy. PS. Does SQL Server 2008 actually tell me the field name. Please tell me it does! I'll upgrade!

• Java Heap Overflow, Forcing Garbage Collection

  I've create a trie tree with an array of children. When deleting a word, I set the children null, which I would assume deletes the node(delete is a relative term). I know that null doesn't delete the child, just sets it to null, which when using a large amount of words it causes to overflow the heap. Running a top on linux, I can see my memory usage spike to 1gb pretty quickly, but if I force garbage collection after the delete (Runtime.gc()) the memory usage goes to 50mb and never above that. From what I'm told, java by default runs garbage collection before a heap overflow happens, but I can't see to make that happen.

• Xcode: code loses syntax coloring

  I find that in various situations Objective-C code in Xcode 3.1 (Leopard) can fail to get appropriate syntax coloring after typing or lose coloring that it had. This isn't just a "refresh" issue with new custom symbols -- but affects Cocoa framework symbols as well. Sometimes CMD-a to select all text on the code page will make the coloring (re)appear, sometimes double-clicking on a line to select it will work, sometimes I have to add/delete a space in a symbol to get that symbol to (re)color. Rebuilding, or closing/reopening the project may or may not work. Is this a known issue with Xcode? For something so annoying to me, I'm not finding the plentiful discussions of it on SO and elsewhere I'd expect. And is there any command to force global syntax recoloring?

• WCF reuse types in referenced assemblies does not reuse the ServiceContract Interface

  I have three seperate projects: -MyUserControl (Needs a reference to a service implementing IMyService) -MyService (Implements IMyService) -MySharedInterfaces (IMyUserControl and IMyService) -MyWebApp The user control needs to be dynamically loaded at runtime. This implements IMyUserControl and has a property of type IMyService which will be set at runtime. The trouble is even with the option to reuse types the WebApp isn't reusing the IMyServiceType, it always generates it again from the Service Reference. This wouldn't be an issue if I could cast it to MySharedInterfaces.IMyService (which I can't understand, since it should be exactly the same). The user control is expecting something of type IMyService, is there anyway to either cast the WebServiceReference.IMyService back to MySharedInterface.IMyServiceReference or force the WebServiceReference to reuse the MySharedInterface.IMyServiceReference?   Hi, I have been googling to figure out how I can customize the Date format when I use jax-rs on apache CXF. I looked at the codes, and it seems that it only support primitives, enum and a special hack that assume the type associated with @ForumParam has a constructor with a single string parameter. This force me to use String instead of Date if I want to use ForumParam. it is kind of ugly. • Is it inmoral to put a captcha on a login form?

  In a recent project I put a captcha test on a login form, in order to stop possible brute force attacks. The inmediate reaction of other coworkers was a request to remove it, saying that it was innapropiate for that purpose, and that it was quite exotic to see a captcha in that place. I've seen captcha images on signup, contact, password recovery forms, etc. So I personally don't see innapropiate to put a captcha also on a place like that. Well, it obviously burns down usability a little bit, but it's a matter of time and getting used to it. With the lack of a captcha test, one would have to put some sort of blacklist / account locking mechanism, which also has some drawbacks. Is it a good choice for you? Am I getting somewhat captcha-aholic and need some sort of group therapy? Thanks in advance.

• Perl unit test - start a tcp server & continue

  I am trying to write a unit test for a client server application. To test the client, in my unit test, I want to first start my tcp server (which itself is another perl file). I tried to start the tcp server by forking: if (! fork()) { system ("$^X server.pl") == 0 or die "couldn't start server" } So when I call "make test" after "perl Makefile.PL", this test starts & I can see the server starting but after that the unit test just hangs there. So I guess I need to start this server in background and I tried the "&" at the end to force it to start in background & then test to continue. But, I still couldn't succeed. What am I doing wrong? • Is it possible to load a new Applescript scripting addition whilst my script is running?

  According to various documents and discussions this used to be possible: you needed a block something like this in your script: try tell me to «event ascrgdut» end try tell me to doTheFunkyNewThing The event corresponds to hidden event with the undocumented C constant kUpdateAEUT (see here for the declaration of the constant) which should force the scripting additions to be reloaded. I've written a scripting addition and played around with this method of getting it to load but I have had no luck at all. I can only make it load by starting my script after the extension has been installed. Does anyone know if there is a way to make this work? Has this functionality been disabled in more recent OS X releases? I'm using OS X 10.6.2 FWIW.

• Way to get VS 2008 to stop forcing indentation on namespaces?

  I've never really been a big fan of the way most editors handle namespaces. They always force you to add an extra pointless level of indentation. For instance, I have a lot of code in a page that I would much rather prefer formatted as namespace mycode{ class myclass{ void function(){ foo(); } void foo(){ bar(); } void bar(){ //code.. } } } and not something like namespace mycode{ class myclass{ void function(){ foo(); } void foo(){ bar(); } void bar(){ //code.. } } } Honestly, I don't really even like the class thing being indented most of the time because I usually only have 1 class per file. And it doesn't look as bad here, but when you get a ton of code and lot of scopes, you can easily have indentation that forces you off the screen, and plus here I just used 2-space tabs and not 4-space as is used by us. Anyway, is there some way to get Visual Studio to stop trying to indent namespaces for me like that?

• Any Way to Further Customize Embedded Google Calendar?

  I'd like to embed a few Google Calendars for my client's web site. The "Google Embeddable Calendar Helper" provides very few customization options. Updating the hex code for the background color in the generated source only works if you pick one of the ~70 standard Google Calendar bg colors. (I can tweak the "border" selector because at least it's in an actual statement.) A "view-source" on the rendered page shows a CSS file loaded from the iframe, but I obviously can't change anything in there. And I assume I can't force an override of selectors with my own CSS file because I have no way of "injecting" it into the iframe. Does anyone know of a (non-API) way of tweaking the colors, fonts, and other CSS thingies in an embedded Google Calendar? Thanks in advance...

  I'm looking for either algorithms or visualization tool for (nice) circuit/block-diagram drawing. I am also interested in a general formulation of the problem. By "circuit drawing", I mean the capability of exploring place & route for block-diagrams (rectangles) with I/O ports and their connections (wires). These block-diagrams can be hierarchical i.e some blocks may have some nested internal sub-structure etc. This topic is strongly related to classical graph-drawing, with the supplemental constraint of the need to take ports location into account, and possibly the shape of the blocks (rectangle of various sizes). Graphviz tools do not respond to the problem (at least my previous experiments have not been satisfactory). Force-directed algorithms retain my attention, but I have just found papers on classical directed graphs. Any hints ?

  Hi guys, I just lost 5 hours looking for a answer which i haven't been able to find :p First, I'd like to force a trusted application (i need to access the file system) to display into the browser. Based on what i found on google a trusted application must be installed and launched as a desktop application (also called out-of-browser application). So, i want to have an installed application on the client side but meanwhile, the user must also be able to start this same application into a browser window when he goes on my web site. Is this possible ? Second, I'd like to give to the user the possibility to start the application from the browser. To be clear be the application is installed on the client computer but i want a button on my web site which starts the desktop application. How can i do that ? Thanks

• How to not check in Eclipse specific project files?

  I don't want to force people into using a specific IDE for development, so our projects look basically like this: SomeProject src lib build.xml No IDE specific files whatsoever. However, many people prefer Eclipse and it is their valid complain that it is annoyingly difficult to set up an Eclipse project from an Ant build file if that project is checked into a VCS. That's a very old bug, so I don't really expect it to be fixed soon. I don't want all those weird Eclipse project files in the project root, but if it was the only way, I would accept having the eclipse project files in a subdirectory "eclipse". I thought Eclipse's linked resources were capable of just that, but I was wrong, it doesn't really work. How do you solve this problem? Are you checking in the .settings directory. etc. into your project's root?

• Cannot pull newly-added top-level directory into sparsely-checked out SVN repository

  Our SVN repository is quite large, and pulling the whole thing takes some time. When checking out at home, I was pleased to discover the sparse checkout feature; I checked out the whole repository to a depth of 1, then pulled each top-level directory (directly under the trunk) that I needed to a depth of infinity. Until now this has been brilliant. Recently I added a new directory under trunk. When I do a svn up, I get nothing. The TLD I added will not sync. I normally use Tortoise SVN, so I tried doing this from command line. I tried explicitly specifying the name of the directory, adding --depth infinity, adding --force. None of these tricks has worked. What am I missing?

• How do I prevent a font from extending off the top of a textbox?

  I'm using a barcode font (IDAutomationMC39H) in an SSRS 2005 report I'm developing, and while it renders fine in the preview in BIDS, if I export the results to PDF, print the results, or do any of the above (including preview) in Report Manager, the barcode font is extending off the top of the textbox. The barcode itself is nearly 20px tall, even at only a 12pt size. I've tried changing the CanGrow value for the textbox, but it seems that even with that set off the barcode isn't pushing the bottom edge of the textbox downwards, it's simply extending over the top of the box. I've also tried resizing the textbox to allow it to contain the entire height of the font, but even with the VerticalAlign set to Bottom the barcode still sticks to the top of the textbox and overflows out the top. When I link the DLLs I get unresolved externals that look like global static objects that would get pulled in by a normal app's main(): Shell.lib(SHELL.obj) : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static struct CRuntimeClass const CException::classCException" (?classCException@CException@@2UCRuntimeClass@@B) Shell.lib(SHELL.obj) : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static struct CRuntimeClass const CFrameWnd::classCFrameWnd" (?classCFrameWnd@CFrameWnd@@2UCRuntimeClass@@B) Shell.lib(SHELL.obj) : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static class CRect const CFrameWnd::rectDefault" (?rectDefault@CFrameWnd@@2VCRect@@B) My current combination of ignore default libraries and additional libraries (the method you can easily google to find the answer to linker hell) is: msvcprtd.lib,mfc100d.lib,mfcs100d.lib,libcmtd.lib When I add nafxcwd.lib (the mfc library), these three external symbols resolve but I end up with a bunch of other duplicate symbols (requiring the use of /FORCE:MULTIPLE) and in end __argc and __argv become unresolved. So the basic question is: Can you link a DLL containing a CWinApp in VS10? How do you setup the linker to do it?
