  Whitespace is signification in Python in that code blocks are defined by their indentation. Furthermore, Guido van Rossum recommends using four spaces per indentation level (see PEP 8: Style Guide for Python Code). What was the reasoning behind not requiring exactly four spaces per indentation level as well? Are there any technical reasons? It seems like all the arguments that can be made for making whitespace define code blocks can also be used to argument for setting an exact whitespace length for one indentation level (say four spaces).

  I have a Python script that reads through a text csv file and creates a playlist file. However I can only do one at a time, like: python playlist.py foo.csv foolist.txt However, I have a directory of files that need to be made into a playlist, with different names, and sometimes a different number of files. So far I have looked at creating a txt file with a list of all the names of the file in the directory, then loop through each line of that, however I know there must be an easier way to do it.

  Are there any downsides to UPX-ing my 32-bit Python 2.6.4 development environment EXE/PYD/DLL files? The reason I'm asking is that I frequently use a custom PY2EXE script that UPX's copies of these files on every build. Yes, I could get fancy and try to cache UPXed files, but I think a simpler, safer, and higher performance solution would be for me to just UPX my Python 2.6.4 directory once and be done with it. From testing in an interpreter, I can see that list() and [] both produce an empty list: >>> list() [] >>> [] [] From what I've learned so far, the only way to create an object is to call its constructor (__init__), but I don't see this happening when I just type []. So by executing [], is Python then mapping that to a call to list()?

I am keen to try this out, but will have to get approval at work to do so.   Basically I have an authlog/syslog file with a list of log in attempts and IP addresses - I need to make a Python program that will create a txt file with all the IP addresses that have more than 5 failed login attempts - a sort of "blacklist". So basically something like: if "uniqueipaddress" and "authentication failure" appear more than 5 times, add uniqueipaddress to txt file. Any help would be greatly appreciated - please try and make it simple as I am very, very inexperienced in programming in Python! Thanks.
