  • Maximum number of files in one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance?

    - by knorv
I have an application writing to an ext3 directory which over time has grown to roughly three million files. Needless to say, reading the file listing of this directory is unbearably slow. I don't blame ext3. The proper solution would have been to let the application code write to sub-directories such as ./a/b/c/abc.ext rather than using only ./abc.ext. I'm changing to such a sub-directory structure and my question is simply: roughly how many files should I expect to store in one ext3 directory while still getting acceptable performance? What's your experience? Or in other words; assuming that I need to store three million files in the structure, how many levels deep should the ./a/b/c/abc.ext structure be? Obviously this is a question that cannot be answered exactly, but I'm looking for a ball park estimate.

  • How to raise an error, if the parsed number of a C++ stdlib stream is immediatly followed by a non whitespace character?

    - by Micha Wiedenmann
In the following example, I didn't expect, that 1.2345foo would be parsed. Since I am reading data files, it is probably better to raise an error and notify the user. Is peek() the correct thing to do here? #include <iostream> #include <sstream> int main() { std::stringstream in("1.2345foo"); double x; in >> x; if (in) { std::cout << "good\n"; } else { std::cout << "bad\n"; } } Output good

  • How to store Hierarchical K-Means tree for a large number of images, using Opencv?

    - by AquaAsh
I am trying to make a program that will find similar images from a dataset of images. The steps are 1)extract SURF descriptors for all images 2)store the descriptors 3)Apply knn on the stored descriptors 4)Match the stored descriptors to the query image descriptor using KNN Now each images SURF descriptor will be stored as Hierarchical k means tree, now do I store each tree as a separate file or is it possible to build some sort of single tree with all the images descriptors and updated as images are added to dataset. This is the paper I am basing the program on www.ijest.info/docs/IJEST10-02-03-13.pdf.

  • How to pick random (small) data samples using Map/Reduce?

    - by Andrei Savu
I want to write a map/reduce job to select a number of random samples from a large dataset based on a row level condition. I want to minimize the number of intermediate keys. Pseudocode: for each row if row matches condition put the row.id in the bucket if the bucket is not already large enough Have you done something like this? Is there any well known algorithm? A sample containing sequential rows is also good enough. Thanks.

  • How can I add similar functionality to a number of methods in java?

    - by Roman
I have a lot of methods for logging, like logSomeAction, logAnotherAction etc. Now I want all these methods make a small pause after printing messages (Thread.sleep). If I do it manually, I would do something like this: //before: public static void logSomeAction () { System.out.println (msg(SOME_ACTION)); } //after: public static void logSomeAction () { System.out.println (msg(SOME_ACTION)); try { Thread.sleep (2000); } catch (InterruptedException ignored) { } } I remember that Java has proxy classes and some other magic-making tools. Is there any way avoid copy-n-pasting N sleep-blocks to N logging methods?

  • Using excel, how can I count the number of cells in a column containing the text "true" or "false"?

    - by Jay Elston
I have a spreadsheet that has a column of cells where each cell contains a single work. I would like to count the occurrences of some words. I can use the COUNTIF function for most words, but if the word is "true" or "false", I get 0. A B 1 apples 2 2 true 0 3 false 0 4 oranges 1 5 apples In the above spreadsheet table, I have these formulas in cells B1, B2, B3 and B4: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"apples") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"true") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"false") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"oranges) As you can see, I can count apples, but not true or false. I have also tried this: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,TRUE) But that does not work either. Note -- I am using Excel 2007.

  • Is there a single query that can update a "sequence number" across multiple groups?

    - by Drarok
    Given a table like below, is there a single-query way to update the table from this: | id | type_id | created_at | sequence | |----|---------|------------|----------| | 1 | 1 | 2010-04-26 | NULL | | 2 | 1 | 2010-04-27 | NULL | | 3 | 2 | 2010-04-28 | NULL | | 4 | 3 | 2010-04-28 | NULL | To this (note that created_at is used for ordering, and sequence is "grouped" by type_id): | id | type_id | created_at | sequence | |----|---------|------------|----------| | 1 | 1 | 2010-04-26 | 1 | | 2 | 1 | 2010-04-27 | 2 | | 3 | 2 | 2010-04-28 | 1 | | 4 | 3 | 2010-04-28 | 1 | I've seen some code before that used an @ variable like the following, that I thought might work: SET @seq = 0; UPDATE `log` SET `sequence` = @seq := @seq + 1 ORDER BY `created_at`; But that obviously doesn't reset the sequence to 1 for each type_id. If there's no single-query way to do this, what's the most efficient way? Data in this table may be deleted, so I'm planning to run a stored procedure after the user is done editing to re-sequence the table.

  • How to limit the number of post values on UpdatePanel ?

    - by Aristos
I have notice that the UpdatePanel post every field included on the form on every trigger. But in most of my cases I use 2-3 UpdatePanels at the same page, and each one is independent. When I click for update the one panel, then my page receive all the input data of the page (ok this is logical) but I won to read only this UpdatePanels data and act according, and not the other panels data. So I see that a lot of traffic is happened this way. So is there a way to say to one UpdatePanel - send only my input data, and not everything found on the page. ? Thank you in advanced.

  • How could I pass the float number by value in obj-c?

    - by user313439
    - (void)applicationDidFinishLaunching:(UIApplication *)application{ // Override point for customization after application launch [window makeKeyAndVisible]; [self printFloat:1.3f]; } - (void)printFloat:(float)f { NSLog(@"%f",f); } I passed the "1.3f" to printFloat, but it was the wrong value (in this case, -2.000000) after "f" received. And there is a warning that "AppDelegate may not respond to -printFloat:" Where did I get it wrong? Thanks.

  • If a Matlab function returns a variable number of values, how can I get all of them as a cellarray,

    - by kaleidomedallion
I am writing a function to remove some values from a cellarray, like so: function left = remove(cells, item); left = cells{cellfun(@(i) ~isequal(item, i), cells)}; But when I run this, left has only the first value, as the call to cells{} with a logical array returns all of the matching cells as separate values. How do I group these separate return values into a single cellarray? Also, perhaps there is already a way to remove a given item from a cellarray? I could not find it in the documentation.

  • Ignore first line on csv parse Rails

    - by Jack
Hi, I am using the code from this tutorial to parse a CSV file and add the contents to a database table. How would I ignore the first line of the CSV file? The controller code is below: def csv_import @parsed_file=CSV::Reader.parse(params[:dump][:file]) n = 0 @parsed_file.each do |row| s = Student.new s.name = row[0] s.cid = row[1] s.year_id = find_year_id_from_year_title(row[2]) if s.save n = n+1 GC.start if n%50==0 end flash.now[:message] = "CSV Import Successful, #{n} new students added to the database." end redirect_to(students_url) end

  • finding the total number of distinct shortest paths between 2 nodes in undirected weighted graph in linear time?

    - by logan
I was wondering, that if there is a weighted graph G(V,E), and I need to find a single shortest path between any two vertices S and T in it then I could have used the Dijkstras algorithm. but I am not sure how this can be done when we need to find all the distinct shortest paths from S to T. Is it solvable on O(n) time? I had one more question like if we assume that the weights of the edges in the graph can assume values only in certain range lets say 1 <=w(e)<=2 will this effect the time complexity?

  • Is it faster to loop through a Python set of number or a set of letters?

    - by Scott Bartell
Is it faster to loop through a Python set of numbers or a Python set of letters given that each set is the exact same length and each item within each set is the same length? Why? I would think that there would be a difference because letters have more possible characters [a-zA-Z] than numbers [0-9] and therefor would be more 'random' and likely affect the hashing to some extent. numbers = set([00000,00001,00002,00003,00004,00005, ... 99999]) letters = set(['aaaaa','aaaab','aaaac','aaaad', ... 'aaabZZ']) # this is just an example, it does not actually end here for item in numbers: do_something() for item in letters: do_something() where len(numbers) == len(letters) Update: I am interested in Python's specific hashing algorithm and what happens behind the scenes with this implementation.
