• Can't install Ubuntu, black screen after install

  I tried several times, but wasn't able to make it work. I tried all recent types of Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I tried acpi=off at the beginning of the installation. In this way I could finish the installation. But after the restart Ubuntu didn't work. Only a black screen appeared. Before that I tried it on the VirtualBox and it work. • SEO Keyword Research Help

  I'm new at SEO and keyword research. I am using Market Samurai as my research tool, and I was wondering if I could ask for your help to identify the best key word to target for my niche. I do plan on incorporating all of them into my site, but I wanted to start with one. If you could give me your input on these keywords, I would appreciate it. This is all new to me :) I'm too new to post pictures, but here are my keywords (Searches, SEO Traffic, and SEO Value / Day): Searches | SEO Traffic | PBR | SEO Value | Average PR/Backlinks of Current Top 10 1: 730 | 307 | 20% | 2311.33 | 1.9 / 7k-60k 2: 325 | 137 | 24% | 822.94 | 2.3 / 7k-60k 3: 398 | 167 | 82% | 589.79 | 1.6 / 7k-60k I'm wondering if the PBR (Phrase-to-broad) value of #1 is too low. It seems like the best value because the SEOV is crazy high. That is like $70k a month. #3 has the highest PBR, but also the lowest SEOV. #2 doesn't seem worth it because of the PR competetion. Might be a little too hard to get into the top page of Google. I'm wondering which keywords to target, and if I should be looking at any other metric to see if this is a profitable niche to jump into. Thanks.

• Skype sounds sizzle/distorted/bad

  I have the same problem as described in the questions skype notification sounds sizzled and bad sound on login to skype. But it is not only the login, notification, but also when talking to somebody. I tried the solution to remove/re-install skype and most of the solutions in this questions, e.g. checking mixer, sound settings and installing alsa-hda-dkms (incl. system restart). After installing skype (and even after upgrade to skype 4.0) in Ubuntu 12.04 (AMD 64) there was no sound at all. • One of the partion on a usb harddisk cannot automount

  It is a very strange problem. My usb harddisk has four partitions, one is primary, the other three are logical (contained within an extended partition). When I plug in the disk, three of the partitions are mounted automatically except one--the first logical partition in the extended partition. Initially I thought it is the problem of system (at that time I used Mint). But after I change to Ubuntu 12.04, the problem wasn't solved. I don't want to add a rule in fstab, and I want to know what happened. • Let Devoxx 2011 begin!

  Devoxx 2011 is kicking off today and Oracle will be well represented for all its Java efforts. Here's a quick rundown of the Java EE and GlassFish side of things. Cameron Purdy, now responsible for the entire Oracle middleware stack (WebLogic, GlassFish, TopLink, Coherence) will host the Java EE keynote, mostly focused on Java EE 7. There will be sessions on individual JSRs by spec leads : Nigel Deakin for JMS 2.0, Marek Potociar for JAX-RS 2.0, and Greg Luck (EHCache) for JSR107 / javax.cache. Oracle's Shaun Smith will also cover JPA 2.1 with some of the unique EclipseLink features such as multi-tenancy. BOFs on Java EE.next and CDI are also planned during the week. Finally, Arun Gupta will be delivering a complete Java EE 6 hands-on lab. There will also be GlassFish-related sessions. A first one will focus on the current state of the community and product (3.1.x) with customers production stories, while GlassFish architect Jerome Dochez will walk you through the enhancements the team is working on for Java EE 7 and GlassFish 4 - virtualization, PaaS, elasticity and more. • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS won't install - never finishes please help

  Want to try Ubuntu after using Windows for 30 years. Tried to install it 5 times on a Lenovo X120e notebook and twice on a Lenovo M57 desktop. No luck, worse than what Microsoft puts you through. I burned 12.04 LTS to disc. It installs up to the "Who Are You?" screen, then stops. Accepted the recommended computer name and lower case user name. I chose "log me in automatically." After that there is no progress bar, no rotating or pulsing button, nothing to indicate the Ubuntu has not died or fallen asleep. Is that how it is written? Never heard of a program that would take a long time to install while a user looked at a locked, dead screen. I just bought the M57 desktop for my son. It came with Ubuntu 10 something. I wanted to upgrade to 12.04 but it crashed, twice, to a DOS screen saying the pc lacked a certain "init" file. Various help screen commands did not help. On the X120e, I thought a partial-failed Ubuntu install was causing the problem, so I removed the drive and deleted the Ubuntu partition and replaced it. But same result. After I fill in my name, accept computer and user name, the "continue" button does not appear to work. I can go "back" but not forward. I have waited torturous hours. It doesn't take more than two hours to install, does it?any It is my own fault because of the high expectations I had for a sensible, hassle-free installation, but I am immensely disappointed. • Where to go after having a good grasp of a language?

  I have been programming as a hobby for the past few years now (most of high school and 1 year in cs in college) and although I've came to the conclusion that a career in CS isn't for me I switched over to math (which pairs what I love about programming with my interest in physical sciences) but I miss writing code. Recently I've had an interest in low-level programming. Understanding how compilers work, learning some basics of assembly language and trying to get out of my comfort zone. The problem is that since I've been out of the CS programs, I'm not faced with much opportunities to write code. I do intend to take a few CS classes in college (a lot of CS stuff is opened to math majors) but that won't come for until next year. So I ask: What are the steps to take in order to keep improving as a programmer once you're passed the basic steps? How do you find projects to keep you going? Beside my newly discovered interest in assembly language, I've been writing code in C and have been interested in FOSS. Thanks!

• Reinventing the Wheel, why should I?

  So I have this problem, it may be my OCD (i have OCD it's not severe.....but It makes me very..lets say specific about certain things, programming being one of them) or it may be the fact that I graduated college and still feel "meh" at programming. Reading This made me think "OH thats me!" but thats not really my main problem. My big problem is....anytime im using a high level language/API/etc. I always think to myself that im not really "programming". I know I know...it sounds stupid. But Like I feel like....if i can't figure out how to do it at the lowest level then Im not really "understanding" it. I do this for just about every new technology I learn. I look at the lowest level and try to understand it. Sometimes I do.....most of the time I don't, I mean i've only really been programming for 4 years (at college, if you even call it programming.....our university's program was "meh"). For instance I do a little bit of embedded programming (with the Atmel AVR 8bits/Arduino stuff). And I can't bring myself to use the C compiler, even though it's 8 million times easier than using assembly......it's stupid I know... Anyone else feel like this, I think it's just my OCD that makes me feel this way....but has anyone else ever felt like they need to go down to the lowest level of the language to even be satisfied with using it? I apologize for the very very odd question, but I think it really hinders me in getting deep seeded into a programming language and making a real application of my own. (it's silly I know)

• Copying photos from camera stalls - how to track down issue?

  When I copy files from my camera (connected via USB) to the SSD in my laptop a few files get copied and then the copy stalls. I'm not sure why, any ideas or things to investigate appreciated, or bug reports to go and look at. I have read this answer - the camera (Canon 40D in case that matters) mounts fine using gvfs. I can see the photos in Nautilus, or in the terminal (in /run/user/username/gvfs/... ) and I can copy a few photos, but not many. Using the terminal or Nautilus the process hangs until the camera goes to sleep. Digikam fails to copy any at all, as does Rapid Photo Downloader. Shotwell did manage it in the end, but that is very much a work around for me. I have disabled thumbnail generation by nautilus. Load average stays about 1 while this is happening, while CPU usage is half idle, half wait (and a little user/sys for other programs). None of the programs at the top of the cpu list in top are related to copying photos. • Can Clojure's thread-based agents handle c10k performance?

  I'm writing a c10k-style service and am trying to evaluate Clojure's performance. Can Clojure agents handle this scale of concurrency with its thread-based agents? Other high performance systems seem to be moving towards async-IO/events/greenlets, albeit at a seemingly higher complexity cost. Suppose there are 10,000 clients connected, sending messages that should be appended to 1,000 local files--the Clojure service is trying to write to as many files in parallel as it can, while not letting any two separate requests mangle the same single file by writing at the same time. Clojure agents are extremely elegant conceptually--they would allow separate files to be written independently and asynchronously, while serializing (in the database sense) multiple requests to write to the same file. My understanding is that agents work by starting a thread for each operation (assume we are IO-bound and using send-off)--so in this case is it correct that it would start 1,000+ threads? Can current-day systems handle this number of threads efficiently? Most of them should be IO-bound and sleeping most of the time, but I presume there would still be a context-switching penalty that is theoretically higher than async-IO/event-based systems (e.g. Erlang, Go, node.js). If the Clojure solution can handle the performance, it seems like the most elegant thing to code. However if it can't handle the performance then something like Erlang or Go's lightweight processes might be preferable, since they are designed to have tens of thousands of them spawned at once, and are only moderately more complex to implement. Has anyone approached this problem in Clojure or compared to these other platforms? (Thanks for your thoughts!)

• Is ActionScript 3 used by Serious Indie Developers?

  This question is for dedicated independent game developers: My dream is to be a game developer. I am a senior in high school who has taken Computer Science for all four years. I have used Java the whole time, but last year I started using PHP and ActionScript 3 (with Flixel). I also used Game Maker for a brief period. I apologize for this, I wanted to get that out of the way and clarify the fact that I have experience of some kind with game development. I am stuck at the moment because I don't quite know what language to use to develop games at a professional level. I am seriously interested in becoming a dedicated game developer, but this issue is really bothering me. I would like to know what the best option would be for my case, based on your experiences. Any advice is appreciated. Things to consider: I am only interested in making 2D games (I am not worried about 3D support) It would be ideal to use something that can be ported to multiple platforms (so as not to run into this problem later) I can't seem to figure out what the industry likes to use So far, this is what I have: I can't decide if it would be wise to stick with ActionScript 3, or move to C++ I know Flash would be for browser games, but what if I want to make a downloadable game, like Plants Vs. Zombies or Super Crate Box? Would Flash be a smart choice for standalone games, or did they use something else? • There is No Scrum without Agile

  It's been interesting for me to dive a little deeper into Scrum after realizing how fragile its adoption can be.  I've been particularly impressed with James Shore's essay "Kaizen and Kaikaku" and the Net Objectives post "There are Better Alternatives to Scrum" by Alan Shalloway.  The bottom line: You can't execute Scrum well without being Agile. Personally, I'm the rare developer who has an interest in project management.  I think the methodology to deliver software is interesting, and that there are many roles whose job exists to make software development easier.  As a project lead I've seen Scrum deliver for disciplined, highly motivated teams with solid engineering practices.  It definitely made my job an order of magnitude easier.  As a developer I've experienced huge rewards from having a well-defined pipeline of tasks that were consistently delivered with high quality in short iterations.  In both of these cases Scrum was an addition to a fundamentally solid process and a huge benefit to the team. The question I'm now facing is how Scrum fits into organizations withot solid engineering practices.  The trend that concerns me is one of Scrum being mandated as the single development process across teams where it may not apply.  And we have to realize that Scurm itself isn't even a development process.  This is what worries me the most - the assumption that Scrum on its own increases developer efficiency when it is essentially an exercise in project management. Jim's essay quotes Tobias Mayer writing, "Scrum is a framework for surfacing organizational dysfunction."  I'm unsure whether a Vice President of Software Development wants to hear that, reality nonwithstanding.  Our Scrum adoption has surfaced a great deal of dysfunction, but I feel the original assumption was that we would experience increased efficiency.  It's starting to feel like a blended approach - Agile/XP techniques for developers, Scrum for project managers - may be a better fit.  Or at least, a better way of framing the conversation. • Changing website Url - Am I making an SEO mistake

  I have a webiste with a .com domain that is a year old. The business is a shop based in Ireland and I have purchased a .ie domain. I plan to move the website over to the new domain, SEO Good or Bad idea? Old Url - SmythsOfTerenure.com | New Url - SmythsComputerRepair.ie (I am using Fake names and fictional business in the example Url's) The new domain has my main keyword in it. The old domain has my family name and business location (city district) It currently ranks high for lots of relevant keywords in Google with low traffic and low competition. Current website traffic is about 80 session per week. 80% of that traffic is Organic from Google. I am changing domain in an attempt to help SEO long term by having a CC TLD (.ie rather than .com) and having my main Keyword in the domain. I plan to do 301 re-directs from old to new and update GW Tools and G Analytics but am I making a mistake changing it at all as I know rankings may fall in the sort term. Homepage PR=0 and very few inbound links. Should I just leave it on the old domain? Or after a few months should I be back up ranking as well as I am now?

• What is wrong with my game loop/mechanic?

  I'm currently working on a 2d sidescrolling game prototype in HTML5 canvas. My implementations so far include a sprite, vector, loop and ticker class/object. Which can be viewed here: http://elias-schuett.de/apps/_experiments/2d_ssg/js/ So my game essentially works well on todays lowspec PC's and laptops. But it does not on an older win xp machine I own and on my Android 2.3 device. I tend to get ~10 FPS with these devices which results in a too high delta value, which than automaticly gets fixed to 1.0 which results in a slow loop. Now I know for a fact that there is a way to implement a super smooth 60 or 30 FPS loop on both devices. Best example would be: http://playbiolab.com/ I don't need all the chunk and debugging technology impact.js offers. I could even write a super simple game where you just control a damn square and it still wouldn't run on a equally fast 30 or 60 fps. Here is the Loop class/object I'm using. • Is it possible to to have all pre-unity effects in latest ubuntu?

  I've been an Ubuntu dilettante for a long, long time. It is not my primary OS but I've always had it on all my laptops and desktop machines for over 8 years now. What I really, really like(d) about ubuntu (or linux, for that matter) was the effects - desktop cube, wobbly windows and other such "cool" effects. Needless to say, I was heartbroken with Unity. I gave it the benefit of doubt and tried to like it, tried to love it. Stuck with it for over a year. But I recently came to the conclusion that unity is really not for me. I want my old ubuntu back, with all it's eye candy effects. I tried messing around with ccsm but it only seemed to make the matters worse. Now, I could just install the old version of ubuntu - but getting my bamboo pen and Nvidia to work with it is a son of a.. anyway, the point is, old version of ubuntu is outdated to work with my newer machines. I'd rather have a new version of ubuntu but without unity- I don't know what the eye candy stuff is called - and so my question is this - Is it possible to rid ubuntu of unity and get all the eye candy stuff and if it is not possible, can you please advice me what other linux supports all the effects, please? I've searched high and low for unity alternatives but didn't find any satisfactory solutions; so I think my question is mainly about what other linux flavour is better suited for the task - sorry if it is out of topic.

• Generalist Languages: Dying or Alive and Well?

  Around here, it seems like there's somewhat of a consensus that generalist programming languages (that try to be good at everything, support multiple paradigms, support both very high- and very low-level programming), etc. are a bad idea, and that it's better to pick the right tool for the job and use lots of different languages. I see three major areas where this is flawed: Interfacing multiple languages is always at least a source of friction and is sometimes practically impossible. How severe a problem this is depends on how fine-grained the interfacing is. Near the boundary between the two languages, though, you're basically limited to the intersection of their features, and you have to care about things like binary interfaces that you usually wouldn't. Passing complex data structures (i.e. not just primitives and arrays of primitives) between languages is almost always a hassle. Furthermore, shifting between different syntaxes, different conventions, etc. can be confusing and annoying, though this is a fairly minor complaint. Requirements are never set in stone. I hate picking a language thinking it's the right tool for the job, then realizing that, when some new requirement surfaces, it's actually a terrible choice for that requirement. This has happened to me several times before, usually when working with languages that are very slow, very domain specific and/or has very poor concurrency/parallelism support. When you program in a language for a while, you start to build up a personal toolbox of small utility functions/classes/programs. The value of these goes drastically down if you're forced to use a different language than the one you've accumulated all this code in. What am I missing here? Why shouldn't more focus be placed on generalist languages? Are generalist languages as a category dying or alive and well?
