• When calling a static method on parent class, can the parent class deduce the type on the child (C#)

  Suppose we have 2 classes, Child, and the class from which it inherits, Parent. class Parent { public static void MyFunction(){} } class Child : Parent { } Is it possible to determine in the parent class how the method was called? Because we can call it two ways: Parent.MyFunction(); Child.MyFunction(); My current approach was trying to use: MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod().ReflectedType; // and MethodInfo.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType; But both appear to return the Parent type. If you are wondering what, exactly I am trying to accomplish (and why I am violating the basic OOP rule that the parent shouldn't have to know anything about the child), the short of it is this (let me know if you want the long version): I have a Model structure representing some of our data that persists to the database. All of these models inherit from an abstract Parent. This parent implements a couple of events, such as SaveEvent, DeleteEvent, etc. We want to be able to subscribe to events specific to the type. So, even though the event is in the parent, I want to be able to do: Child.SaveEvent += new EventHandler((sender, args) => {}); I have everything in place, where the event is actually backed by a dictionary of event handlers, hashed by type. The last thing I need to get working is correctly detecting the Child type, when doing Child.SaveEvent. I know I can implement the event in each child class (even forcing it through use of abstract), but it would be nice to keep it all in the parent, which is the class actually firing the events (since it implements the common save/delete/change functionality).

• (Java) Is there a type of object that can handle anything from primitives to arrays?

  I'm pretty new to Java, so I'm hoping one of you guys knows how to do this. I'm having the user specify both the type and value of arguments, in any XML-like way, to be passed to methods that are external to my application. Example: javac myAppsName externalJavaClass methodofExternalClass [parameters] Of course, to find the proper method, we have to have the proper parameter types as the method may be overloaded and that's the only way to tell the difference between the different versions. Parameters are currently formatted in this manner: (type)value(/type), e.g. (int)71(/int) (string)This is my string that I'm passing as a parameter!(/string) I parse them, getting the constructor for whatever type is indicated, then execute that constructor by running its method, newInstance(<String value>), loading the new instance into an Object. This works fine and dandy, but as we all know, some methods take arrays, or even multi-dimensional arrays. I could handle the argument formatting like so: (array)(array)(int)0(/int)(int)1(/int)(/array)(array)(int)2(/int)(int)3(/int)(/array)(/array)... or perhaps even better... {{(int)0(/int)(int)1(/int)}{(int)2(/int)(int)3(/int)}}. The question is, how can this be implemented? Do I have to start wrapping everything in an Object[] array so I can handle primitives, etc. as argObj[0], but load an array as I normally would? (Unfortunately, I would have to make it an Object[][] array if I wanted to support two-dimensional arrays. This implementation wouldn't be very pretty.)

• Confirm disk is broken when it passes all diagnostics

  I have a system with a potentially broken disk, but the disk passes all manner of diagnostics. I have been unable to confirm that the disk is broken. What are my options? I could just replace the disk, but because this situation is very similar to another more severe situation I have (long story), I'd like to actually make a proper diagnosis as opposed to randomly binning hardware. The issue and history is this: I had a Debian Linux PC (500 MHz P3) acting as router, nagios and munin. It crashed every couple of weeks. No logs or dmesg could be obtained (because it's an old Compaq that only boots when you configure it as keyboardless, making connecting a keyboard later, once it's booted, impossible). At the time, I just replaced the computer with another Compaq (P4 2.4 GHz) because I thought the hardware was faulty. However, it still crashed every couple of weeks. the difference is that on this computer, I can still SSH into it. It gives all kinds of errors on hda. I'd like to confirm that the disk is broken, but nothing I do confirms this: SMART error logs shows no errors. Normally when a disk starts acting up, SMART my pass, but it still records a read-error in the error log. SMART self-test (smartctl -t long /dev/sda) completes without errors. re-allocated sector count (a tell-tale parameter) has been 31 all its life, even when the disk was still in use in my desktop PC years ago, and it still is. The figure never changed. dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=4096 passes with flying colors. What else can I do to assess the health of the drive? Again, this is not about making this router fully functional again, this is a disk forensic question, because it just so happens that I have another server that potentially has the same problem, and knowing the answer to this will possibly help me greatly. • How to debug KVO

  In my program I use KVO manually to observe changes to values of object properties. I receive an EXC_BAD_ACCESS signal at the following line of code inside a custom setter: [self willChangeValueForKey:@"mykey"]; The weird thing is that this happens when a factory method calls the custom setter and there should not be any observers around. I do not know how to debug this situation. Update: The way to list all registered observers is observationInfo. It turned out that there was indeed an object listed that points to an invalid address. However, I have no idea at all how it got there. Update 2: Apparently, the same object and method callback can be registered several times for a given object - resulting in identical entries in the observed object's observationInfo. When removing the registration only one of these entries is removed. This behavior is a little counter-intuitive (and it certainly is a bug in my program to add multiple entries at all), but this does not explain how spurious observers can mysteriously show up in freshly allocated objects (unless there is some caching/reuse going on that I am unaware of). Modified question: How can I figure out WHERE and WHEN an object got registered as an observer? Update 3: Specific sample code. ContentObj is a class that has a dictionary as a property named mykey. • Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. See logs below, I may be missing something, also how is it possible to log on the bootstrap vm. Could I manual deploy, if so what do I need to do.   I have noticed some error during the Linux boot. They seem to continue to occur after the boot adding lines to the log every few seconds. Once booted this normally does not appear to be causing any problems. However, around 1 in 10 boots results in a kernel panic and the computer has on two or three occasions suddenly rebooted after being powered on for a number of hours. I presume the cause of the reboot is a kernel panic as well. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and I have had Ubuntu installed on the computer for around a year. I have googled around and not found anything useful. I have provided the kernel log lines and the output of smartctl.   I'm trying to deploy ASP.NET MVC 2 project (VS2010) to Win Server 2008 R2 It works perfectly on dev machine. But strange error occurs at Server 2008 R2: When .ascx file has header that uses generic type: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>" %> Server reports Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>'. But when I declare somewhere in .cs file type like public class AA : System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel> { } and use it instead in <%@ Control header. Then it works as it should. Am I missing something?

  My custom subclass extend UIControl (MyCustomUIControl) Basically it contains 3 subviews: UIButton (UIButtonTypeCustom) UIImageView UILabel All the class works great but now I want to connect some events generated from this class to another. In particular when the button is pressed I want to forward the event to the owner viewcontroller so that I can handle the event. The problem is that I can't figure out how to implement this behaviour. Within EditableImageView I can catch the touch event using [button addTarget:self action:@selector(buttonPressed:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchUpInside] but I don't know how to forward it inside of the buttonPressed selector. I also tried to implement touchesBegan but it seems never called... • pyQt4: QWidget subclass not responding to new setStyleSheet() background colour

  I am having an issue with PyQt4. I want to create a new widget within a window, and I want this widget to have a custom color. When i create a subclass of the QWidget class, and instantiate it, I am not able to change its background color through the setStyleSheet() function. When I instantiate a new QWidget object, I have no problems in changing its background color. But i dont want an ordinary QWidget object.I want to create my own subclass of QWidget. When i create a subclass of a QPushButton, I am also able to change its background color using the setStyleSheet() function. There are no error messages or warnings in the console window, it just refuses to work properly without any indication as to why. So what i would like to know is why is it that i can change the background color of a widget if i simply create a QWidget object, or a subclass of QPushButton, but not when i create a subclass of QWidget. And how can i therefore change the background color of an object that is a subclass of QWidget? Is it maybe something specific to the version of python or PyQt that i am using? Is it a bug in the library? or some flaw in the way that i am writing my code? I am using python 2.6.4 and PyQt4 Below is an example of the code that leads me to trouble. There are three widgets within the window one below the other. The parent widget is set with background color of green. • Odd behavior in Django Form (readonly field/widget)

  I'm having a problem with a test app I'm writing to verify some Django functionality. The test app is a small "grade book" application that is currently using Alex Gaynor's readonly field functionality http://lazypython.blogspot.com/2008/12/building-read-only-field-in-django.html There are 2 problems which may be related. First, when I flop the comment on these 2 lines below: # myform = GradeForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) myform = GradeROForm(data=request.POST, instance=mygrade) it works like I expect, except of course that the student field is changeable. When the comments are the shown way, the "studentId" field is displayed as a number (not the name, problem 1) and when I hit submit I get an error saying that studentId needs to be a Student instance. I'm at a loss as to how to fix this. I'm not wedded to Alex Gaynor's code. ANY code will work. • What do I return if the return type of a method is Void? (Not void!)

  Due to the use of Generics in Java I ended up in having to implement a function having Void as return type: public Void doSomething() { //... } and the compiler demands that I return something. For now I'm just returning null, but I'm wondering if that is good coding practice... I've also tried Void.class, void, Void.TYPE, new Void(), no return at all, but all that doesn't work at all. (For more or less obvious reasons) (See this answer for details) So what am I supposed to return if the return type of a function is Void? What's the general use of the Void class? EDIT: Just to spare you the downvotes: I'm asking about V?oid, not v?oid. The class Void, not the reserved keyword void.

  I currently have a list containing Call's, which is the base class.   I have a garbage collected Cocoa application built on 10.5 frameworks. In an NSOperation In a loop I am quickly creating hundreds of NSManagedObjects. • In ASP.NET MVC, why can't I inherit from "MyCustomView" without specifying the full type name?

  In my MVC apps I normally declare a base view type that all of my views inherit from. I get a parser error when I specify Inherits="MyView" in my Page declaration, but not if I specify Inherits="MyApp.Web.Views.MyView". Strangely enough, it also works fine if I specify Inherits="MyView<T> (where T is any valid type). Why can I specify a strongly typed view without the full type name, but not a generic view? And I need safe pointer sharing. • LINQ to SQL -- Can't modify return type of stored procedure.

  When I drag a particular stored procedure into the VS 2008 dbml designer, it shows up with Return Type set to "none", and it's read only so I can't change it. The designer code shows it as returning an int, and if I change that manually, it just gets undone on the next build. But with another (nearly identical) stored procedure, I can change the return type just fine (from "Auto Generated Type" to what I want.) I've run into this problem on two separate machines. Any idea what's going on?
