• When I type certain characters, they come out as backquotes

  Very strange behavior. Some background: I bought a new lenovo G550 laptop, running Windows 7. I live in Israel. When I type certain keys, in any application, they are prefaced with the backquote (`). These characters are: Insert, Delete, Left Ctrl (the right-hand one is fine), - (the regular dash: the one on the keypad is fine), =, 5 (the regular one), 4 (the one on the numeric keypad, whether or not Num Lock is on), and PgDn (the regular one). When I press the Fn key with these I don't get the behavior. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how I can fix it?

• Can expire_logs_days be less than 1 day in MySQL?

  So... yesterday I received an "after the fact email" about a campaign that has started for one of the services that I run. Now the DB server is getting hammered, hard, to the tune of about 300mb/min in binary logging for the replicate. As you could imagine, this is chewing up space at a fairly tremendous rate. My normal 7 day expiry of binary logs just isn't cutting it. I've resorted to truncating logs to just the last for 4 hours with(I'm verifying that replication is up to date with mk-heartbeat): PURGE MASTER LOGS BEFORE DATE_SUB( NOW(), INTERVAL 4 HOUR); I'm just running that from cron every few hours to weather the storm, but it made me question the minimum value for expire_logs_days. I haven't come across a value that is less than 1, but that doesn't mean that it isn't possible. http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_expire_logs_days gives the type as being numeric, but doesn't indicate if it's expecting integers.

• Windows 7 search for files with special characters in name.

  I have a rather large source code repository on my machine; it is not indexed by Windows Search. I am trying to find some oddly-named generated files of the form .#name.extension.version where name and extension are normal names and extensions and version is a numeric value (e.g. something like 1.186). On Windows XP I could find these files by searching for .#*; on Windows 7 that just returns every single file and directory. So my question is this: is it possible to find files named like that using the built-in Windows 7 search functionality? I did find this question which is very similar, but the answer doesn't work for me; it seems like any special character I put in the query is either ignored or treated as a wildcard, and as a result it matches every single file and directory. Is there perhaps some registry value I can set to make the search-by-filename feature work with special characters?

• DataGraph alternatives for Windows systems

  Recently, on a friend's mac I came across a wonderful application for plotting in numerous ways numeric data - DataGraph. I've always done this sort of thing with Excel, and with newer versions, to me (this is emphasized "to me", so this doesn't get taken as an Excel rant post), it's becoming troublesome. Are there applications like this (specialized for one thing they do good and relatively simple ... I'm not interested in CFD visualization packages in here.) for Windows ? All suggestions welcomed.

• Microsoft SyncFramework - Sync different tables into one

  Hello, we are trying to get the Microsoft SyncFramework running in our application to synchronize an oracle db with a mobile device. Problem The queries that we need to gather the data on the oracle db take much time (and we haven't found a way to speed them up yet), so we try to split them up in as much portions as possible. One big part of the whole problem is, that we need different information out of one big table, that bloats a query if combined. Unfortunately, the SyncFramework allows only one TableAdapter per SyncTable. Now this is a problem for our application: If we were able to use more than one TableAdapter per SyncTable, we could easily spread the queries in a more efficient way. Using one query per Table which combines all the needed data takes way too much time. Ideas I thought of creating different TableAdapters for each one of the required queries and then merge the resulting datasets afterwards (preferably on the server). This seems to work, but is a rather awkward solution. Does someone of you know a better solution? Or do you have some ideas that could help? Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and is also the Database Server. The other VPC is the domain member and it is the IIS web server, POP/SMTP server and it has WSS 3.0 installed. I created a new site using the GUI in Central Admin page.   I have a three-level multi-nested form in Rails. The setup is like this: Projects have many Milestones, and Milestones have many Notes. The goal is to have everything editable within the page with JavaScript, where we can add multiple new Milestones to a Project within the page, and add new Notes to new and existing Milestones. Everything works as expected, except that when I add new notes to an existing Milestone (new Milestones work fine when adding notes to them), the new notes won't save unless I edit any of the fields that actually belong to the Milestone to mark the form "dirty"/edited. Is there a way to flag the Milestone so that the new Notes that have been added will save?   On SortedMap.subMap This is the API for SortedMap<K,V>.subMap: SortedMap<K,V> subMap(K fromKey, K toKey) : Returns a view of the portion of this map whose keys range from fromKey, inclusive, to toKey, exclusive. This inclusive lower bound, exclusive upper bound combo ("half-open range") is something that is prevalent in Java, and while it does have its benefits, it also has its quirks, as we shall soon see.   I want to add a custom table to my iPhone app, that should look and work like the one used in the facebook app showing the notifications. It should contain rows with links in it. The text should be black, while the tap-able parts should appear blue. As a already figured out, labels only have one font, color and so on and you can't mix styles within it, I would have to use different components. The tab-able text parts maybe UIButtons with custom style without any border. I tried different approches to build the custom cell. I used Interface Builder, to layout components, but since the different parts have variable lengths they overlaid each other. I also tried to add instances of UIButton and UILabel as a subview to the cell's contentView as descibed in Apple's tutorial. The problem with this is that: The position and size of the components is fix and set when they get created using "initWithFrame:...".   This will probably just be a simple problem and I am just blind or an idiot but I could use some help. So I am going over some basic guides in Rails, reviewing the basics and such for an upcoming exam. One of the guides included was the sort-of-standard getting started guide over at guide.rubyonrails.org. Here is the link if you need it. Also all my code is for my app is from there, so I have no problem releasing any of my code since it should be the same as shown there. I didn't do a copy paste, but I basically was typing with Vim in one half of my screen and the web page in the other half, typing what I see. http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html So like I said, I am going along the guide when I noticed past a certain point in the tutorial, I was always getting an error on the site. To find the section of code, just hit Ctrl+f on the page (or whatever you have search/find set to) and enter "accepts_". • Advanced Regex: Smart auto detect and replace URLs with anchor tags

  I've written a regular expression that automatically detects URLs in free text that users enter. This is not such a simple task as it may seem at first. Jeff Atwood writes about it in his post. His regular expression works, but needs extra code after detection is done. I've managed to write a regular expression that does everything in a single go. This is how it looks like (I've broken it down into separate lines to make it more understandable what it does): 1 (?<outer>\()? 2 (?<scheme>http(?<secure>s)?://)? 3 (?<url> 4 (?(scheme) 5 (?:www\.)? 6 | 7 www\. 8 ) 9 [a-z0-9] 10 (?(outer) 11 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+(?=\)) 12 | 13 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+ 14 ) 15 ) 16 (?<ending>(?(outer)\))) As you may see, I'm using named capture groups (used later in Regex.Replace()) and I've also included some local characters (cšžcd), that allow our localised URLs to be parsed as well. You can easily omit them if you'd like. Anyway. Here's what it does (referring to line numbers): 1 - detects if URL starts with open braces (is contained inside braces) and stores it in "outer" named capture group 2 - checks if it starts with URL scheme also detecting whether scheme is SSL or not 3 - start parsing URL itself (will store it in "url" named capture group) 4-8 - if statement that says: if "sheme" was present then www. part is optional, otherwise mandatory for a string to be a link (so this regular expression detects all strings that start with either http or www) 9 - first character after http:// or www. should be either a letter or a number (this can be extended if you'd like to cover even more links, but I've decided not to because I can't think of a link that would start with some obscure character) 10-14 - if statement that says: if "outer" (braces) was present capture everything up to the last closing braces otherwise capture all 15 - closes the named capture group for URL 16 - if open braces were present, capture closing braces as well and store it in "ending" named capture group First and last line used to have \s* in them as well, so user could also write open braces and put a space inside before pasting link. Anyway. Question I would like my links to be replaced with shortenings as well. So when user copies a very long link (for instance if they would copy a link from google maps that usually generates long links) I would like to shorten the visible part of the anchor tag. Link would work, but visible part of an anchor tag would be shortened to some number of characters. I could as well append ellipsis at the end of at all possible (and make things even more perfect). Does Regex.Replace() method support replacement notations so that I can still use a single call? Something similar as string.Format() method does when you'd like to format values in string format (decimals, dates etc...).

I'm not sure why since I thought as long as I had different parameters for my constructor, I was ok. So the HTML that arrived was a sort of skeleton and ajax was used to fill in the gaps. This is fine and not at all surprising Since the page should be seo friendly it should work fine without js. in step 4 nothing happens in the console and the skeleton page loads pre-populated rendering the ajax unnecessary. This is also completely not confusing in step 7 the ajax calls are made but fail. this is also ok since the urls they are using are not local, the calls are thus broken. The page looks like the skeleton. This is also great and expected. in step 8: no ajax calls are made and the skeleton is just a skeleton. I would have thought that this should behave very much like in step 4 question What I want to do is use urllib2 to grab the html from step 4 but I cant figure out how. What am I missing and how could I pull this off? To paraphrase If I was writing a spider I would want to be able to grab plain ol' HTML (as in that which resulted in step 4). I dont want to execute ajax stuff or any javascript at all. I don't want to populate anything dynamically. I just want HTML. The seo friendly site wants me to get what I want because that's what seo is all about. How would one go about getting plain HTML content given the situation I outlined? To do it manually I would turn off js, navigate to the page and copy the html. I want to automate this. stuff I've tried I used wireshark to look at packet headers and the GETs sent off from my pc in steps 2 and 4 have the same headers. Reading about SEO stuff makes me think that this is pretty normal otherwise techniques such as hijax wouldn't be used. Here are the headers my browser sends: Host: groupon.cl User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: keep-alive Here are the headers my script sends: Accept-Encoding: identity Host: groupon.cl Accept-Language: en-gb,en;q=0.5 Connection: close Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 User-Agent: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0 The differences are: my script has Connection = close instead of keep-alive. I can't see how this would cause a problem my script has Accept-encoding = identity. This might be the cause of the problem. I can't really see why the host would use this field to determine the user-agent though. If I change encoding to match the browser request headers then I have trouble decoding it. • Destroying a record via RJS TemplateError (Called ID for nil...)

  I am trying to destroy a record in my table via RJS and having some trouble. I have successfully implemented this before so can't quite understand what is not working here. Here is the setup: I am trying to allow a user of my app to select an answer from another user as the 'winning' answer to their question. Much like StackOverflow does. I am calling this selected answer 'winner'. class Winner < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :site belongs_to :user belongs_to :question validates_uniqueness_of :user_id, :scope => [:question_id] end I'll spare you the reverse has_many associations but I believe they are correct (I am using has_many with the validation as I might want to allow for multiple later). Also, think of site like an answer to the question.
