  • Update to recent stable php in Ubuntu 12.04

    We run an Ubuntu 12.04 server where php 5.3.10 is installed by default. I thought Ubuntu did only apply bugfixes in their updates, so micros like 5.3.x should pass through. Apparently, our version isn't updated, but we are stuck with a critical bug in php which is solved in 5.3.15. Should I wait longer for this release to bubble up? Or are there safe repositories to use for Ubuntu to continuously update php and php related packages?

    I sent an email, but immediately got a reply saying: Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected] Action: failed Status: 5.0.0 (permanent failure) Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 5.1.2 - Bad destination host 'DNS Hard Error looking up smtpint.xxx.edu (MX): NXDomain' (delivery attempts: 0) I was wondering what this error report means, where in the delivery route the error happened, who should be contacted to solve this issue and how to solve it? Thanks and regards! I also appreciate if someone can explain a bit more about the mechanism behind the email delivery.

    i have installed rkhunter on ubuntu 10.04 LTS when i try to test rkhunter report it doesn't send email to my external root email recipient. i can send email only editing /etc/default/rkhunter by replacing this row REPORT_EMAIL="root" with the desired recipient REPORT_EMAIL="[email protected]" These are my config file settings: /root/.forward [email protected] and /etc/aliases root: [email protected] But it doesn't work with root recipient. Any suggestion?

  • Issues connection to Ubuntu via PuTTy

    I'm not sure this is the appropriate stack exchange site to post this question on. If not, please flag this for migration. I am trying to use PuTTy ssh into my ubuntu machine which is wirelessly connected to the same network. I originally ran ifconfig to get my ubuntu machines private network IP address. I then verified that ssh was running, I even ssh'd into my school network and then into the ubuntu machine itself. No problems yet. On my windows 8 machine I ran ipconfig to get my private network IPv4 address. I then pinged my ubunty machines IP and 100% of packets were received. I figured, "OK we are ready to use PuTTy to connect to my Ubuntu Machine". Keep in mind this was my first time using PuTTy. I tried entering the IP of my ubuntu machine in the PuTTy Config GUI but I got a connection timeout. At this moment I don't really know what's going on, SSH is running on port 22 of my Ubuntu machine and I can ping the machine why is it not connecting? (I tried [username]@ip too). So I went on my Ubuntu machine and ran nmap -sP 192.168.0.1/24 and found that my windows machines IP did not show up, the host is down. I'm at a lost in something I am not very familiar with. Would anyone be able to help me or direct me to some resources that would trouble shoot my problem?   • Real-time log parsing and reporting

    We have a small project we are working on part-time that runs on Nginx/MongoDB on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server. We'd like to be able to see reports on things like server load, requests/sec, response time, DB load, DB response time, etc. Is there an open source or free (as in beer) tool that can parse such logs and provide a real-time report? I looked into Splunk briefly, but I wanted to see if there are any others that are highly recommended.

    I ran into the following issue by accident when playing around with the DIG command and testing some domain names. Why does DIG hang and not timeout after 10 seconds when executing the following: dig +tries=1 +tries=1 +retry=1 +time=5 +trace google.us.com DIG hangs for about 30 seconds instead of timing out and then dies with the following error message: dig: couldn't get address for 'ns.reserved-domain.uk.com': no more Do I need to set another flag/option for DIG to have it timeout instead of hanging, or is this a bug?   • Alt-Shift won't switch language in Microsoft Word

    I have Windows 7 RTM, Office 2007 SP1, and a computer with English and Hebrew languages installed. In most programs (e.g. notepad), left ALT-SHIFT switches from Hebrew to English and vice versa. In word, it also usually works, but sometimes pressing left ALT-SHIFT just won't do anything. Is this a bug in Windows ? Word?

    I am attempting to confirm via RSoP or GPResult that the correct settings for "\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Account Policies\Kerberos Policy" are being applied, however the "Kerberos Policy" node is missing from the treeview / report. These settings are set in the "Default Domain Controllers Policy" which is linked in the "Domain Controllers" OU. Should "Kerberos Policy" appear at all? If not, how can I confirm the correct settings are being applied?

  • Why does my computer beep when i type <shift>-DE quickly?

    I'm writing a report on developing EJBs in Jdeveloper and every time i type "IDE" my laptop beeps twice in quick succesion. Actually, whilst typing this I've worked out that any combination of shift plus two adjacent keys, one from the row that starts qwerty and one from the row that starts asdfg will beep. It's really quite annoying. It's a hp laptop. Anyone know how I can make it stop?

    i've got a problem removing mounts created with mount -o bind from a locally mounted NFS folder. Assume the following mount structure: NFS mounted directory: $ mount -o rw,soft,tcp,intr,timeo=10,retrans=2,retry=1 \ 10.20.0.1:/srv/source /srv/nfs-source Bound directory: $ mount -o bind /srv/nfs-source/sub1 /srv/bind-target/sub1 Which results in this mount map $ mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,errors=remount-ro) # ... 10.20.0.1:/srv/source on /srv/nfs-source type nfs (rw,soft,tcp,intr,timeo=10,retrans=2,retry=1,addr=10.20.0.100) /srv/nfs-source/sub1 on /srv/bind-target/sub1 type none (rw,bind) If the server (10.20.0.1) goes down (eg ifdown eth0), the handles become stale, which is expected. I can now un-mount the NFS mount with force $ umount -f /srv/nfs-source This takes some seconds, but works without any problems. However, i cannot un-mount the bound directory in /srv/bind-target/sub1. The forced umount results in: $ umount -f /srv/bind-target/sub1 umount2: Stale NFS file handle umount: /srv/bind-target/sub1: Stale NFS file handle umount2: Stale NFS file handle Here is a trace http://pastebin.com/ipvvrVmB I've tried umounting the sub-directories beforehand, find any processes accessing anything within the NFS or bind mounts (there are none). lsof also complains: $ lsof -n lsof: WARNING: can't stat() nfs file system /srv/nfs-source Output information may be incomplete. lsof: WARNING: can't stat() nfs file system /srv/bind-target/sub1 (deleted) Output information may be incomplete. lsof: WARNING: can't stat() nfs file system /srv/bind-target/ Output information may be incomplete. I've tried with recent stable Linux kernels 3.2.17, 3.2.19 and 3.3.8 (cannot use 3.4.x, cause need the grsecurity patch, which is not, yet, supported - grsecurity is not patched in in the tests above!). My nfs-utils are version 1.2.2 (debian stable). Does anybody have an idea how i can either: force the un-mount some other way? (any dirty trick is welcome, data loss or damage neglible at this point) use something else instead of mount -o bind? (cannot use soft links, cause mounted directories will be used in chroot; bindfs via FUSE is far to slow to be an option) Thanks, Paul Update 1 With 2.6.32.59 the umount of the (stale) sub-mounts work just fine. It seems to be a kernel regression bug. The above tests where with NFSv3. Additional tests with NFSv4 showed no change. Update 2 We have tested now multiple 2.6 and 3.x kernels and are now sure, that this was introduced in 3.0.x. We will fille a bug report, hopefully they figure it out.

    Whe right clicking in windows that have popup menus you can hold mouse button, wait until popup appears and release above the desired item to click it. This is different from Windows that have popup appear only on mouse release. And it leads to accident menu item clicking sometimes.     In my VPS (Hypervm/CENTOS 5.8 i686 virtuozzo) I need to add IP bans with comments ( http://spamcleaner.org/en/misc/iptables-comment.html ) When I type: iptables -A INPUT -s 222.111.111.111 -j DROP -m comment --comment "spammer123" I receive: iptables: Unknown error 4294967295 I research almost 2 hours but i find nothing, someone says "its a bug and you have to rebuild kernel!?" Does anyone know a solution or a different method for adding a comment or note ?

  • mysqld_multi stop doesn't seem to work

    mysqld_multi stop 1 followed by (repeatedly, a few moments later) mysqld_multi report 1 returns: Reporting MySQL servers MySQL server from group: mysqld1 is running The instances work fine and when I reboot, I have to start the instances to get them to come back up (a separate issue I need to resolve), but the stop command doesn't seem to do anything. It truly doesn't stop the instance because in the instance log file I see this: 120619 11:12:39 mysqld_safe A mysqld process already exists after trying to run start after.

  • usb mouse connecting and disconnecting randomly and often

    Yes, I know this question has been asked here before but I can't add to the discussion over there and it did not help me, so here goes nothing. I've bought an acer aspire 5742G about 2 months ago or so and it's been running great, but sometimes I used to hear the windows error beep but I had no idea what was causing it since the "bug" was automatically fixed so fast I couldn't even see an error message (also it kinda always happened when I was busy also, either in a game or while doing my homework). Later on my mouse would simply not work for 3-5 seconds then work again, I thought nothing of it at the time. I also had a problem where it only worked in one usb and one only ... to move it I had to remove the battery, unplug the laptop and hold the power button for 2 minutes to reset the bios settings. Since today though it went nuts ... sometimes it disconnects / reconnects 12 times in 10 seconds and windows just keeps beeping till I unplug it, then it runs smooth for 5-6 minutes then it goes nuts again. Other times it seems like it skips (disconnects for a fraction of a second) other times just for 2-3 seconds. But this is incredibly frustrating. Sometimes the power just goes down (the laser turns off) and well that at least I would understand but this is a rare occurance. Now I know the usb ports work since I have a lot of other devices connected and I tried the mouse on a room m8's laptop so the mouse also works. My only conclusion is that it's an operating system / settings bug and / or problem (I have tried the mouse in all ports by the way). All drivers and bios are up to date (maybe except mouse but i can't seem to update that and the mouse has no name, just a serial number which helps with nothing. Still it worked till today and nothing should have changed any way). I have made sure windows can't shut it down to save power (in device management). Also I tried to delete the drivers and re-install them, rebooting and the power button trick but nothing ... most I have done is get rid of the 12 discconnects / reconnects every 10 seconds :) but that's all :( I would buy a new one but I'm afraid it might do the same thing :| ****EDIT****** Tried the mouse again at a friend but now it didn't even install it's software nor did the update work ... think I'll just buy a new one but I'd still like a suggestion at least so I'll leave this open

    Hi, I am using Word 2010 and some built-in features with fields, such as bibliography. My Word installation is English and I am writing a report in US English. However, my computer has its locale set to Denmark. This affects the formatting of dates and some of the text in the auto-generated fields (e.g. in bibliography it says "citeret:" instead of "cited:").
