• JavaOne Latin America Schedule Posted

  The official schedule for JavaOne Latin America 2012 is now posted. For the folks that are not yet aware, JavaOne Latin America is to be held on 4-6 December at the Transamerica Expo Center in São Paulo, Brazil. As you can expect there are keynotes, technical sessions, hands-on labs and demos led by Java luminaries from Brazil, Latin America and across the globe. There's tons of good stuff on Java EE and GlassFish. While it’s notably BitDefender-centric, it’s also an interesting look at the methodology employed by a company specializing in virus/malware protection. Here’s an excerpt from the discussion about data gathering techniques: Honeypots are systems we distributed across our network, that act as victims. Their role is to look like vulnerable targets, which have valuable data on them. We monitor these honeypots continuously and collect all kinds of malware and information about black hat activities. Another thing we do, is broadcast fake e-mail addresses that are automatically collected by spammers from the Internet. Then, they use these addresses to distribute spam, malware or phishing e-mails. • Submitting software to a competition, it becomes their property?

  So I'm about to submit a game to a competition, but as I looked through the rules a chunk grabbed my attention: All Entries become the sole and exclusive property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Sponsor shall own all right, title and interest in and to each Entry, including without limitation all results and proceeds thereof and all elements or constituent parts of Entry (including without limitation the Mobile App, the Design Documents, the Video Trailer, the Playable and all illustrations, logos, mechanicals, renderings, characters, graphics, designs, layouts or other material therein) and all copyrights and renewals and extensions of copyrights therein and thereto. Without limitation of the foregoing, each Eligible Entrant shall and hereby does absolutely and irrevocably assign and transfer all of his or her right, title and interest in his or her Entry to Sponsor, and Sponsor shall have the right and may authorize others to use, copy, sublicense, transmit, modify, manipulate, publish, delete, reproduce, perform, distribute, display and otherwise exploit the Entry (and to create and exploit derivative works thereof) in any manner, including without limitation to embody the Entry, in whole or in part, in apps and other works of any kind or nature created, developed, published or distributed by Sponsor and to and register as a trademark in any country in Sponsor’s name any component of the Entry, without such Eligible Entrant reserving any rights or claims with respect thereto. And if it doesn't win said competition, will I be able to publish it myself without their trademarks? I am very new to software legality stuff, so I would appreciate any clarification. Since there's a possibility I won't even own the source, is it possible to make the game core engine open source software with a not-very-restrictive license and include that in the project, so I at least still own the game engine? Or does it not work that way?

• Does F# kill C++?

  Okay, so the title may be a little misleading… but I am currently travelling and so have had very little time and access to resources to do much fsharping – this has meant that I am right now missing my favourite new language. I was interested to see this post on Stack Overflow this evening concerning the performance of the F# language. The person posing the question asked 8 key points about the F# language, namely… How well does it do floating-point? Does it allow vector instructions How friendly is it towards optimizing compilers? How big a memory foot print does it have? Does it allow fine-grained control over memory locality? Does it have capacity for distributed memory processors, for example Cray? What features does it have that may be of interest to computational science where heavy number processing is involved? Are there actual scientific computing implementations that use it? Now, I don’t have much time to look into a decent response and to be honest I don’t know half of the answers to what he is asking, but it was interesting to see what was put up as an answer so far and would be interesting to get other peoples feedback on these questions if they know of anything other than what has been covered in the answer section already.

• Guitar hero clone and music

  I am an indie game developer and I am doing a game similar to guitar hero. I am using tracks composed by musicians and I contacted them to sing a licensing contract. As is my first indie project I have no idea on how I should deal with the royalties aspect of this because each track as an ISRC code and each time a track is played in public there is a fee to pay to the "local" registration authority. An iPhone game it is downloaded and not played on air (or physically distributed), and hence I think there is a specific legislation for this that specifies how much one should pay. I own some of the tracks composed and for this I think I won't have to pay a royalty (even if the track has an ISRC code) but for other tracks I just have a license "to use". I wonder how a game like Guitar hero can sell on iPhone for as little as 0,99$ and then have "in app purchases" for packs of 3 songs (for about 2 dollars) and make a profit (I imagine they will have to pay a ISRC royalty). Does anyone of you have any idea of this can work or if there is a section in this forum where I can ask this question? I understand is not about coding but I think is about development of a game in the broader sense.

  I used to work alone on small to medium sized programming projects before and have no experience working in a team environment. Currently, there will be 3 of us in an in-house software development team that is tasked to develop a number of software for an academic institution. We have decided to use the web for the majority of the projects and are planning to choose Ruby on Rails for this and I would like to ask for your inputs, advices and approaches with regards to software development as a team using the RoR web framework. One thing that has really confounded me is how you divide the programming tasks of a project if there are 3 of you that are really doing the coding. It’s obvious that we as developers approach a problem in a modular way and finish it one after another. If the project consists of 3 modules, should each one of us focus on each of those modules?   I was thinking a lot about software licensing lately, because I would like to do some coding. I'm not an expert in all those licenses, so I came up with my own idea, and before I will put in on paper, I would like to make sure that I didn't reinvent a wheel, so maybe I would be able to use something that exists. Main idea behind my license is to guarantee freedom of use the software, but not "freedom to" (positive) (e.g. freedom to having source code), but "freedom from" (negative) (strictly from legal actions against you). It would be "viral" copyleft license. You would be able to without fear do everything you want with the software (and binaries e.g. reverse engineering), as long as You will include information about author and/or authors, and all derivative works will be distributed with the same license. I'm not interested in anything that would restrict a freedom of company to do something like "tivoization". I'm just trying to accomplish something that would block any legal actions of user and developer, targeted against each other, with the exception of basic attribution. Does exist something like that?

• Algorithmic problem - quickly finding all #'s where value %x is some given value

  Problem I'm trying to solve, apologies in advance for the length: Given a large number of stored records, each with a unique (String) field S. I'd like to be able to find through an indexed query all records where Hash(S) % N == K for any arbitrary N, K (e.g. given a million strings, find all strings where HashCode(s) % 17 = 5. Is there some way of memoizing this so that we can quickly answer any question of this form without doing the % on every value? The motivation for this is a system of N distributed nodes, where each record has to be assigned to at least one node. The nodes are numbered 0 - (K-1) , and each node has to load up all of the records that match it's number: If we have 3 nodes Node 0 loads all records where Hash % 3 ==0 Node 1 loads all records where Hash % 3 ==1 Node 2 loads all records where Hash % 3 ==2 adding a 4th node, obviously all the assignments have to be recomputed - Node 0 loads all records where Hash % 4 ==0 ... etc I'd like to easily find these records through an indexed query without having to compute the mod individually. The best I've been able to come up with so far: If we take the prime factors of N (p1 * p2 * ... ) if N % M == I then p % M == I % p for all of N's prime factors e.g. 10 nodes : N % 10 == 6 then N % 2 = 0 == 6 %2 N % 5 = 1 == 6 %5 so storing an array of the "%" of N for the first "reasonable" number of primes for my data set should be helpful. For example in the above example we store the hash and the primes HASH PRIMES (array of %2, %3, %5, %7, ... ]) 16 [0 1 1 2 .. ] so looking for N%10 == 6 is equivalent to looking for all values where array[1]==1 and array[2] == 1. However, this breaks at the first prime larger than the highest number I'm storing in the factor table. Is there a better way?

  In our campus we have a leased line connection from a service provider, which has an external IP W.X.Y.Z. This connection is distributed from the server several sub-networks / subnets as follows: Faculty: 172.33....../ 255.255.0.0 Administration: 172.34......./255.255.255.0 Students: 172.35...../255.255.216.0 A student has a laptop with a fixed IP address 172.35.23.123 / 255.255.216.0 where the IP address is on the ethernet port. The gateways for internet access are 172.31.1.1 and 172.31.1.2. Further the student has a wireless port which is inaccessible in the hostel area. The OS of the student is Ubuntu 12.10. The student in the possession of an android phone on which he wishes to install specific software and therefore wishes to activate the internet therein. The student has already attempted the Wireless hotspot solution which works for 12.04 but has not been successful. • Steps to send patch to Launchpad

  With a Git/Github background and knowing very little about Bazaar VCS, I would like to occasionally report a bug to Launchpad and even send a patch. I'd like to do it in a "proper" way so that it's ready for merging or improvement while not getting in way. I can't seem to find a decent simple How-to suited for my needs. So what I did so far: I have created a Launchpad account, reported the bug, installed Bazaar and setup SSH keys etc. Now if it was Github, I'd fork the repo, clone the forked repo, create a sanely named branch and do the work, commit + push, create a pull request using Github WUI. But it's not Github, and both LP and Bazaar architectures seem quite different from their Github/Git cunterparts. So could a kind soul save me from drowning in tons of documents and complile a straightforward step path, mainly the second part? Possibly including relevant CLI commands when they are needed? Edit: It seems that I should clarify if I'm asking specifically about Ubuntu packages (whatever it means) or Launchpad packages. I don't really care much about distinction between Ubuntu packages and non-Ubuntu packages. Any software could be in Ubuntu today and out of it tomorrow, or vice-versa. The development is what matters much more than distribution. Ao I was assuming that not every single package distributed in Ubuntu is hosted on Launchpad, an "official" or "default" workflow for Launchpad exists (well if all devs can agree on using Bazaar, why couldn't most of them agree on a patching workflow?), so I'm asking about the Launchpad way, not the Ubuntu way. And I chose AU because since the intersection is vast, I guess it's pretty on topic here.

• Why would Java app make RPC call to itself?

  I am working with a multithreaded homegrown multi-module app in my new job. We use the the Thrift protocol to communicate RPC calls between different stand-alone applications in a distributed system. One of them listens on multiple ports and I just noticed that it actually makes an RPC call to itself from one thread invoked from one socket it listens to (web service call) to another port within the same app. I verified that it could accomplish the same thing if it just went and directly called the method that the remote procedure ultimately invokes as it is all within the same application, same JVM. To make it even more mysterious, the call is completely synchronous, i.e. no callbacks involved. The first thread totally sits and waits until it makes a call across the wire to itself and comes back. Now, I am perplexed why anybody would do it this way. It seems like calling somebody on the phone that sits in the same room as you do. Can anybody provide an explanation why the developer before me would come up with the above mentioned model? Maybe there is a reason and I am missing something.

• How safe is it to rely on thirdparty Python libs in a production product?

  I'm new to Python and come from the write-everything-yourself world of PHP (at least this is how I always approached it). I'm using Flask, WTForms, Jinja2, and I've just discovered Flask-Login which I want to use. My question is about the reliability of using thirdparty libraries for core functionality in a project that is planned to be around for several years. I've installed these libraries (via pip) into a virtualenv environment. What happens if these libraries stop being distributed? Should I back up these libraries (are they eggs)? Can I store these libraries in my project itself, instead of relying on pip to install them in a virtualenv? And should I store these separately? I'm worried that I'll rely on a library for core functionality, and then one day I'll download an incompatible version through pip, or the author or maintainer will stop distributing it and it'll no longer be available. How can I protect against this, and ensure that any thirdparty libraries that I use in my projects will always be available as they are now?

• Develop in trunk and then branch off, or in release branch and then merge back?

  Say that we've decided on following a "release-based" branching strategy, so we'll have a branch for each release, and we can add maintenance updates as sub-branches from those. Does it matter whether we: develop and stabilize a new release in the trunk and then "save" that state in a new release branch; or first create that release branch and only merge into the trunk when the branch is stable? I find the former to be easier to deal with (less merging necessary), especially when we don't develop on multiple upcoming releases at the same time. Under normal circumstances we would all be working on the trunk, and only work on released branches if there are bugs to fix. What is the trunk actually used for in the latter approach? It seems to be almost obsolete, because I could create a future release branch based on the most recent released branch rather than from the trunk. Details based on comment below: Our product consists of a base platform and a number of modules on top; each is developed and even distributed separately from each other. Most team members work on several of these areas, so there's partial overlap between people. We generally work only on 1 future release and not at all on existing releases. One or two might work on a bugfix for an existing release for short periods of time. Our work isn't compiled and it's a mix of Unix shell scripts, XML configuration files, SQL packages, and more -- so there's no way to have push-button builds that can be tested. That's done manually, which is a bit laborious. A release cycle is typically half a year or more for the base platform; often 1 month for the modules.

• How to sell logistical procedures that require less time to perform but more finesse?

  I am working with a group where part of the responsibilities is managing a certain set of configuration files which, of course, have the same skeleton/structure across different environments but different values (like server, user, this setting, that setting etc.). Pretty classic scenario... The problem is that everyone just goes and modifies final, environment-specific files and basically repeats the work for every environment. Personally, I am offended to have to peform repeatable, mundane tasks in this day and age when we have technologies to automate it all. So I devised a very simple procedure of abstracting the files into templates, stubbing env-specific values with parameters and then wrote a simple Perl script that, given a template and an environment matrix with env-specific values for each param, produces the final file. So this is nothing special, cutting-edge or revolutionary -- I am pretty sure that 20 years ago efficient places did their CM like that. However, that requires that changes are made at the template level and then distributed across different environments using the script and not making changes in the final environment-specific files. This is where I am encountering resentment as they feel "comfortable" doing it their old, manual, repeated labor way. Personally, I don't have a problem with them working hard rather than smart but the problem is when I have to build on top of someone else's changes, I have to merge their changes into my template from a specific file, which takes time and is grueling. So my question is how to go about selling my method, which makes it so much faster in an environment that is resentful to change and where most things have to be done at the level of the least competent team member?

• The balance between client and server functionality

  I want to bring the discussion that started in our teams and get your opinion about it. Assume we have an user account which could have different credentials for authentication and associated email to recover. An user has possibility to do signup with an email or use his social profile to complete signup process. As an Rest API from the backend to client looks like: Create account Authorise Update user data Link social account Register email Verify email In addition our BE is distributed and divided between several services/servers/clusters. So different calls are related to different end points. In case of the social sign up some of steps should be skipped or simplified. For example, with Facebook signup we could already skip email registration and verification step (we ask email permission form user), linking the social account and pre-fill user displayed name. So we proposed to have another end point which will hide/combine different calls on BE and return whole process result to the clients. The pros for this approach: No more duplication of functionality between clients Speed up the networking and user experience The cons for this approach: Additional work for backend Probably most complex scenarios in future updates I would like to get your opinion or experience with this situation. Especially if you already experienced point #2 from against reasons.
