• Linux udev persistent net rule

  I have a Linux system (Slackware Linux 13.0) with two network interfaces. Let's call them NIC0 and NIC1 My goal is to make NIC0 to appear as eth0 in the system. I know this can be achieved via udev rules that map network aliases to MAC addresses of network interfaces. In Slackware Linux the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules contains such rules. The trickiest part of my problem is that I need to fake the MAC address of NIC0. I know I can dynamically change the MAC addres of a network interface with the command: ifconfig eth0 hw ether <new MAC address> Do you see the problem? This supposes that the network interfaces are already set up. So my question is: If I would have an udev rule for NIC1(the one that shall go up as eth1, with its original MAC address), would it be enough for the system to bring the other network interface (NIC0) as eth0 by default? This way I could change its MAC address later, after the udev machinery completes and the network aliases are brought up.

• Gotcha | Installing .net 4.0 and IIS 6

  Just a quick one, seems pretty weird to me. I installed .net 4.0 on an old IIS6 box, ready to deploy a asp.net mvc app targeting .net 4.0.  I thought, which to me seems logical, that I install .net 4.0, setup a new web site, new app pool, set the web site to asp.net 4.0 (other configuration also needed to run MVC on IIS6 here and here) and it would just work. Errr… No.  The page cannot be displayed!  Nothing to do with MVC. • IIS 7 and ASP.NET State Service Configuration

  We have 2 web servers load balanced and we wanted to get away from sticky sessions for obvious reasons. Our attempted approach is to use the ASP.NET State service on one of the boxes to store the session state for both. I realize that it's best to have a server dedicated to storing sessions but we don't have the resources for that. I've followed these instructions to no avail. The session still isn't being shared between the two servers. I'm not receiving any errors. I have the same machine key for both servers, and I've set the application ID to a unique value that matches between the two servers. Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this issue? Update: I turned on the session state service on my local machine and pointed both servers to the ip address on my local machine and it worked as expected. The session was shared between both servers. This leads me to believe that the problem might be that I'm not using a standalone server as my state service. Perhaps the problem is because I am using the ip address 127.0.0.1 on one server and then using a different ip address on the other server. Unfortunately when I try to use the network ip address as opposed to localhost the connection doesn't seem to work from the host server. Any insight on whether my suspicions are correct would be appreciated.

• RAID1: can't replace faulty spare (marked again as 'faulty spare' within seconds)

  I got a problem that I cannot solve: Our fileserver runs XUbuntu and 3 RAID1s. One has a problem since monday: it consists of sdb and sdc. sdb was marked as faulty by mdadm for unknown reasons. I used --remove to remove it from the RAID and then to add it by --add. All was fine, re-syncing started but never got above 0% and after a few seconds, sdb was again marked as 'faulty spare' (and therefore the RAID degraded, but clean). So I saved the first 512 byte of the old sdb to a file, bought a new HDD of same size (4TB), shut down the computer and replaced sdb physically, switched the computer back on and wrote the 512 byte back to the new drive to have the same partition info as the old drive (both are the same type, from same company). But the new drive shows the same behaviour as the old: I can add, re-syncing starts and after a few seconds its marked as 'faulty spare'. I do all commands as root and the system holds 3 more 4TB drives, ie the mainboard can handle them. The old harddrive was checked for errors using badblocks, but all is fine. • ASP.Net Session Timing Out Rapidly

  We have an ASP.Net 3.5 website running on Windows Server 2008 with IIS7. The session timeout period for this site is configured to be 20 minutes - however, it is currently lasting for between 40 and 50 seconds. After researching the problem we investigated several configuration values which could be involved in the timeout period but none of them are set to less than 20 minutes. The areas we look are as follows: web.config system.web/sessionState element (20 minutes). web.config system.web/authentication/forms element (not present, defaults to 30 minutes). Sites/{website}/ASP/Session Properties/Time-out (20 minutes). Application Pools/{appPool}/Advanced Settings/Process Model/Idle Time-out (20 minutes). We've also noted that the CPU is staying around 0% and that RAM usage is flat-lining around 1.07 GB (of 8 GB available) - so there is no performance-based reason for IIS to be recycling the Application Pool as far as we can tell. Are there any settings we've overlooked which could cause the session timeouts to be expiring so quickly? EDIT A couple of additional points: This is not occurring in development, only on the server. The session is not sliding (i.e. if we refresh the page a few times it still times out approximately 40 - 50 seconds after the session was created.

• IIS7ASP.Net 4.0 - 404 errors only for external clients

  recently we moved an ASP.Net 3.5 website to 4.0 (integrated mode) and when we deployed to the clients server (Windows Server 2008 Web edition) we notice that some .aspx pages are serving 404 errors. What is strange is that 1) the pages exist 2) if you browse from the server itself the page is served as normal, only external clients get the 404 3) it's the default 404 error page not the one configured in the web.config 4) it only happens for some .aspx pages, and I've not been able to establish a link between the pages that are not being served externally. We are using a URL rewriter module which I first thought may be at fault but then realised that only some of the failing pages are being rewritten. I've also tested removing the http module and the problem still persists. As everything is working as expected when logged onto the server I was thinking it my be some sort of permission issue, but why would it only affect a few pages? I turned on failed request tracking and the debug files are being generated with the expected 404 error, although at the moment I'm not sure what most of the data means so can't decipher what's going on internally. I'd really appreciate some help with this one.
