  • gvim: Easy copying into system clipboard

    I am using gVim on Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy (yank) text to the system clipboard, so that the copied text is available in other applications. This works with "+y. But I want to have it working with y. I have tried to map y to "+y but then yy doesn't work anymore (since it produces "+y"+y). I have also tried :set clipboard=unnamed but this works only the other direction: Text in the system clipboard I can paste with p.

  • Do similar passwords have similar hashes?

    Our computer system at work requires users to change their password every few weeks, and you cannot have the same password as you had previously. It remembers something like 20 of your last passwords. I discovered most people simply increment a digit at the end of their password, so "thisismypassword1" becomes "thisismypassword2" then 3, 4, 5 etc. Since all of these passwords are stored somewhere, I wondered if there was any weakness in the hashes themselves, for standard hashing algorithms used to store passwords like MD5. Could a hacker increase their chances of brute-forcing the password if they have a list of hashes of similar passwords?

  • Percona system tables corrupted.

    I am having problems setting up mysql replication with a percona as server. accidentally, took a full dump from mysql and restored it on percona and then started,the replication. now when i stop slave and start slave, i am getting the error "[ERROR] Failed to open the relay log './s5-bin.000003' (relay_log_pos 2029993) 110103 9:15:59 [ERROR] Could not find target log during relay log initialization " But show local variables shows the relay_log variable as set in the cnf file.. But the relay-log variable is set to slave-relay-bin alright. I am able to start mysql as a service. But mysqld_safe fails with error "110103 9:19:39 [ERROR] /usr/sbin/mysqld: Can't create/write to file '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid' (Errcode: 2) 110103 9:19:39 [ERROR] Can't start server: can't create PID file: No such file or directory " Am now lost as to what is the problem.

  • Cannot install VS Team System 2008 on Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)

    I am trying to install VS TS 2008 on W7 Ultimate (64bit), but I have run into errors during the setup. Please take note that I have tried to mount the iso to a virtual drive, and also extracted the iso contents to a local folder. Both methods have failed and produce the same error log below. [10/26/09,03:02:40] Runtime Pre-requisites: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Runtime Pre-requisites. MSI returned error code 1603 [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Runtime Pre-requisites is not installed. [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 64bit Prerequisites (x64) was not attempted to be installed. And the list goes on and on.. This is a fresh install of W7, and I have not installed Microsoft Office 2007 at all yet, not sure if it would be causing my errors right now.. I appreciate any help I can get thank you.

    Hi, I need a webserver (lamp) running inside a virtual machine (#1) running as a service (#2) in headless mode (#3) with part or the whole filesystem encrypted (#4). The virtual machine will be started with no user intervention and provide access to a web application for users in the host machine. Points #1,#2 and #3 are checked and proved to be working fine with Sun VirtualBox, so my question is for #4: Can I encrypt the all filesystem and still access the webserver (using a browser) or will grub ask me for a password? If encrypting the all filesystem is not an option, can I encrypt only /home and /var/www ? will apache/php be able to use files in /home or /var/www without asking for a password or mounting these partitions manually? I have a rails application developed to spain, therefore, all content is in spanish, so, I have a search box to search in a mysql database, all rows are in spanish, I'd like to improve my search to allow to users to search keywords in singular or plural form, for example: keyword: patatas found: patata keyword: veces found: vez keyword: vez found: veces keyword: actividades found: actividad In english, this could be relatively easy with help of singularize and pluralize methods ... where `searching_field` like '%singularized_keyword%' or `searching_field` like '%pluralized_keyword%' But, for spanish....   • Slower/cached Linux file system required

    I know it sounds odd but I need a slower or cached filesystem. I have a lot of firewalls that are syslog'ing their data to a pair of Linux VMs which write these files to their 'local' (actually FC SAN attached) ext3-formatted disks and also forward the messages to our Splunk servers. The problem is that the syslog server is writing these syslog messages as hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny ~4k writes per second back to our FC SAN - which can handle this workload right now but our FW traffic's going to be growing by at least a factor of 5000% (really) in coming months and that'll be a pain for the SAN, I want to fix the root cause before it's a problem. So I need some help figuring out a way of getting these writes cached or held-off in some way from the 'physical' disks so that the VMs fire off larger, but less frequent, writes - there's no way of avoiding these writes but there's no need for it to do so many tiny ones. I've looked at the various ext3 options, setting noatime and nodiratime but that's not made much of a dent in the problem. Obviously I'm investigating other file systems but thought I'd throw this out in case others have the same problem in the future. Oh and I can't just forward these messages to Splunk, our firewall team insist they're in their original format for diag purposes.
