  • Targeted Simplify in Mathematica

    - by Timo
    I generate very long and complex analytic expressions of the general form: (...something not so complex...)(...ditto...)(...ditto...)...lots... When I try to use Simplify, Mathematica grinds to a halt, I am assuming due to the fact that it tries to expand the brackets and or simplify across different brackets. The brackets, while containing long expressions, are easily simplified by Mathematica on their own. Is there some way I can limit the scope of Simplify to a single bracket at a time? Edit: Some additional info and progress. So using the advice from you guys I have now started using something in the vein of In[1]:= trouble = Log[(x + I y) (x - I y) + Sqrt[(a + I b) (a - I b)]]; In[2]:= Replace[trouble, form_ /; (Head[form] == Times) :> Simplify[form],{3}] Out[2]= Log[Sqrt[a^2 + b^2] + (x - I y) (x + I y)] Changing Times to an appropriate head like Plus or Power makes it possible to target the simplification quite accurately. The problem / question that remains, though, is the following: Simplify will still descend deeper than the level specified to Replace, e.g. In[3]:= Replace[trouble, form_ /; (Head[form] == Plus) :> Simplify[form], {1}] Out[3]= Log[Sqrt[a^2 + b^2] + x^2 + y^2] simplifies the square root as well. My plan was to iteratively use Replace from the bottom up one level at a time, but this clearly will result in vast amount of repeated work by Simplify and ultimately result in the exact same bogging down of Mathematica I experienced in the outset. Is there a way to restrict Simplify to a certain level(s)? I realize that this sort of restriction may not produce optimal results, but the idea here is getting something that is "good enough".

  • Why would I be seeing execution timeouts when setting $_SESSION values?

    - by Kev
    I'm seeing the following errors in my PHP error logs: PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded in D:\sites\s105504\www\index.php on line 3 PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded in D:\sites\s105504\www\search.php on line 4 The lines in question are: index.php: 01 <?php 02 session_start(); 03 ob_start(); 04 error_reporting(E_All); 05 $_SESSION['nav'] = "range"; // <-- Error generated here search.php 01 <?php 02 03 session_start(); 04 $_SESSION['nav'] = "range"; 05 $_SESSION['navselected'] = 21; // <-- Error generated here Would it really take as long as 60+ seconds to assign a $_SESSION[] value? The platform is: Windows 2003 SP2 + IIS6 FastCGI for Windows 2003 (original RTM build) PHP 5.2.6 Non thread-safe build There aren't any issues with session data files being cleared up on the server as sessions expire. The oldest sess_XXXXXXXXXXXXXX file I'm seeing is around 2 hours old. There are no disk timeouts evident in the event logs or other such disk health issues that might suggest difficulty creating session data files. The site is also on a server that isn't under heavy load. The site is busy but not being hammered and is very responsive. It's just that we get these errors, three or four in a row, every three or four hours. I should also add that I'm not the original developer of this code and that it belongs to a customer who's developer has long since departed.

  • Does complex JOINs causes high coupling and maintenance problems ?

    - by ashkan.kh.nazary
    Our project has ~40 tables with complex relations.A colleague believes in using long join queries which enforces me to learn about tables outside of my module but I think I should not concern about tables not directly related to my module and use data access functions (written by those responsible for other modules) when I need data from them. Let me clarify: I am responsible for the ContactVendor module which enables the customers to contact the vendor and start a conversation about some specific product. Products module has it's own complex tables and relations with functions that encapsulate details (for example i18n, activation, product availability etc ...). Now I need to show the product title of some product related to some conversation between the vendor and customers. I may either write a long query that retrieves the product info along with conversation stuff in one shot (which enforces me to learn about Product tables) OR I may pass the relevant product_id to the get_product_info(int) function. First approach is obviously demanding and introduces many bad practices and things I normally consider fault in programming. The problem with the second approach seems to be the countless mini queries these access functions cause and performance loss is a concern when a loop tries to fetch product titles for 100 products using functions that each perform a separate query. So I'm stuck between "don't code to the implementation, code to interface" and performance. What is the right way of doing things ? UPDATE: I'm specially concerned about possible future modifications to those tables outside of my module. What if the Products module decided to change the way they are doing things? or for some reason modify the schema? It means some other modules would break or malfunction until the change is integrated to them. The usual ripple effect problem.

  • How to interrupt a thread performing a blocking socket connect?

    - by Jason R
    I have some code that spawns a pthread that attempts to maintain a socket connection to a remote host. If the connection is ever lost, it attempts to reconnect using a blocking connect() call on its socket. Since the code runs in a separate thread, I don't really care about the fact that it uses the synchronous socket API. That is, until it comes time for my application to exit. I would like to perform some semblance of an orderly shutdown, so I use thread synchronization primitives to wake up the thread and signal for it to exit, then perform a pthread_join() on the thread to wait for it to complete. This works great, unless the thread is in the middle of a connect() call when I command the shutdown. In that case, I have to wait for the connect to time out, which could be a long time. This makes the application appear to take a long time to shut down. What I would like to do is to interrupt the call to connect() in some way. After the call returns, the thread will notice my exit signal and shut down cleanly. Since connect() is a system call, I thought that I might be able to intentionally interrupt it using a signal (thus making the call return EINTR), but I'm not sure if this is a robust method in a POSIX threads environment. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to do this, either using signals or via some other method? As a note, the connect() call is down in some library code that I cannot modify, so changing to a non-blocking socket is not an option.

  • Technique to remove common words(and their plural versions) from a string

    - by Jake M
    I am attempting to find tags(keywords) for a recipe by parsing a long string of text. The text contains the recipe ingredients, directions and a short blurb. What do you think would be the most efficient way to remove common words from the tag list? By common words, I mean words like: 'the', 'at', 'there', 'their' etc. I have 2 methodologies I can use, which do you think is more efficient in terms of speed and do you know of a more efficient way I could do this? Methodology 1: - Determine the number of times each word occurs(using the library Collections) - Have a list of common words and remove all 'Common Words' from the Collection object by attempting to delete that key from the Collection object if it exists. - Therefore the speed will be determined by the length of the variable delims import collections from Counter delim = ['there','there\'s','theres','they','they\'re'] # the above will end up being a really long list! word_freq = Counter(recipe_str.lower().split()) for delim in set(delims): del word_freq[delim] return freq.most_common() Methodology 2: - For common words that can be plural, look at each word in the recipe string, and check if it partially contains the non-plural version of a common word. Eg; For the string "There's a test" check each word to see if it contains "there" and delete it if it does. delim = ['this','at','them'] # words that cant be plural partial_delim = ['there','they',] # words that could occur in many forms word_freq = Counter(recipe_str.lower().split()) for delim in set(delims): del word_freq[delim] # really slow for delim in set(partial_delims): for word in word_freq: if word.find(delim) != -1: del word_freq[delim] return freq.most_common()

  • Best strategy for synching data in iPhone app

    - by iamj4de
    I am working on a regular iPhone app which pulls data from a server (XML, JSON, etc...), and I'm wondering what is the best way to implement synching data. Criteria are speed (less network data exchange), robustness (data recovery in case update fails), offline access and flexibility (adaptable when the structure of the database changes slightly, like a new column). I know it varies from app to app, but can you guys share some of your strategy/experience? For me, I'm thinking of something like this: 1) Store Last Modified Date in iPhone 2) Upon launching, send a message like getNewData.php?lastModifiedDate=... 3) Server will process and send back only modified data from last time. 4) This data is formatted as so: <+><data id="..."></data></+> // add this to SQLite/CoreData <-><data id="..."></data></-> // remove this <%><data id="..."><attribute>newValue</attribute></data></%> // new modified value I don't want to make <+, <-, <%... for each attribute as well, because it would be too complicated, so probably when receive a <% field, I would just remove the data with the specified id and then add it again (assuming id here is not some automatically auto-incremented field). 5) Once everything is downloaded and updated, I will update the Last Modified Date field. The main problem with this strategy is: If the network goes down when I am updating something = the Last Modified Date is not yet updated = next time I relaunch the app, I will have to go through the same thing again. Not to mention potential inconsistent data. If I use a temporary table for update and make the whole thing atomic, it would work, but then again, if the update is too long (lots of data change), the user has to wait a long time until new data is available. Should I use Last-Modified-Date for each of the data field and update data gradually?

  • Looking for fast, minimal, preferrably free disc cloning software [closed]

    - by Dave
    We have to test our application installation and functionality on many Windows operating system versions and languages (XP, Vista, Win7; English, Spanish, Portuguese, etc; 32-bit & b4-bit.) While we can do much of this in virtual machines, we have noticed that VM's sometimes hide problems, or raise false bugs. So, we need to do "bare metal" OS installation for much of our testing. I have been using Acronis True Image for the past year, and am not impressed. It often gives random errors which require a reboot, and is really slow. For example, when trying to restore an image, it goes through a "Locking partition" cycle about three times (once after you click OK on each step of the wizard), each of which can take 5 minutes to complete. This all happens BEFORE it actually starts the image copy, which is sometimes quick (3-5 minutes), sometimes long (hours). The size of all of our images are roughly the same, so that is not related. So, anyway, I'm looking to switch to something else: I only need very basic functionality--just creating images of entire discs, and then restoring those images onto the exact same hard drive at a later date. That's it. I'm not opposed to paying for a good piece of software, but if there is something free out there that does the job well, that would be a preference. My OS on which the imaging software would run is Windows Vista, but a bootable media (into a Linux flavor) would be fine also, as long as its quick to use and reliable. Recommendations? (Also, moderators, if this should be a CW, I'll be happy to mark it as such; unclear about the rules there.)

  • When does an ARM7 processor increase its PC register?

    - by Summer_More_More_Tea
    Hi everyone: I'm thinking about this question for a time: when does an ARM7(with 3 pipelines) processor increase its PC register. I originally thought that after an instruction has been executed, the processor first check is there any exception in the last execution, then increase PC by 2 or 4 depending on current state. If an exception occur, ARM7 will change its running mode, store PC in the LR of current mode and begin to process current exception without modifying the PC register. But it make no sense when analyzing returning instructions. I can not work out why PC will be assigned LR when returning from an undefined-instruction-exception while LR-4 from prefetch-abort-exception, don't both of these exceptions happened at the decoding state? What's more, according to my textbook, PC will always be assigned LR-4 when returning from prefetch-abort-exception no matter what state the processor is(ARM or Thumb) before exception occurs. However, I think PC should be assigned LR-2 if the original state is Thumb, since a Thumb-instruction is 2 bytes long instead of 4 bytes which an ARM-instruction holds, and we just wanna roll-back an instruction in current state. Is there any flaws in my reasoning or something wrong with the textbook. Seems a long question. I really hope anyone can help me get the right answer. Thanks in advance.

  • JUnit: checking if a void method gets called

    - by nkr1pt
    I have a very simple filewatcher class which checks every 2 seconds if a file has changed and if so, the onChange method (void) is called. Is there an easy way to check ik the onChange method is getting called in a unit test? code: public class PropertyFileWatcher extends TimerTask { private long timeStamp; private File file; public PropertyFileWatcher(File file) { this.file = file; this.timeStamp = file.lastModified(); } public final void run() { long timeStamp = file.lastModified(); if (this.timeStamp != timeStamp) { this.timeStamp = timeStamp; onChange(file); } } protected void onChange(File file) { System.out.println("Property file has changed"); } } @Test public void testPropertyFileWatcher() throws Exception { File file = new File("testfile"); file.createNewFile(); PropertyFileWatcher propertyFileWatcher = new PropertyFileWatcher(file); Timer timer = new Timer(); timer.schedule(propertyFileWatcher, 2000); FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(file); fw.write("blah"); fw.close(); Thread.sleep(8000); // check if propertyFileWatcher.onChange was called file.delete(); }

  • Why NOT use POST method here?

    - by Camran
    I have a classifieds website. In the main page (index) I have several form fields which the user may or may not fill in, in order to specify a detailed search of classifieds. Ex: Category: Cars Price from: 3000 Price to: 10000 Color: Red Area: California The forms' action is set to a php page: <form action='query_sql.php' method='post'> In query_sql.php I fetch the variables like this: category=$_POST['category']; etc etc... Then query MySql: $query="SELECT........WHERE category='$category' etc etc.... $results = mysql_query($query); Then I simply display the results of the query to the user by creating a table which is filled in dynamically depending on the results set. However, according to an answer by Col. Shrapnel in my previous Q I shouldn't use POST here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3004754/how-to-hide-url-from-users-when-submitting-this-form The reason I use post is simply to hide the "one-page-word-document" long URL in the browsers adress bar. I am very confused, is it okay to use POST or not? It is working fine both when I use GET or POST now... And it is already on a production server... Btw, in the linked question, I wasn't referring to make URL invisible (or hide it) I just wanted it too look better (which I have accomplished with mod_rewrite). UPDATE: If I use GET, then how should I make the url better looking (beautiful)? Check this previous Q out: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3000524/how-to-make-this-very-long-url-appear-short

  • Parse JSON into a ListView friendly output

    - by Thomas McDonald
    So I have this JSON, which then my activity retrieves to a string: {"popular": {"authors_last_month": [ { "url":"http://activeden.net/user/OXYLUS", "item":"OXYLUS", "sales":"1148", "image":"http://s3.envato.com/files/15599.jpg" }, { "url":"http://activeden.net/user/digitalscience", "item":"digitalscience", "sales":"681", "image":"http://s3.envato.com/files/232005.jpg" } { ... } ], "items_last_week": [ { "cost":"4.00", "thumbnail":"http://s3.envato.com/files/227943.jpg", "url":"http://activeden.net/item/christmas-decoration-balls/75682", "sales":"43", "item":"Christmas Decoration Balls", "rating":"3", "id":"75682" }, { "cost":"30.00", "thumbnail":"http://s3.envato.com/files/226221.jpg", "url":"http://activeden.net/item/xml-flip-book-as3/63869", "sales":"27", "item":"XML Flip Book / AS3", "rating":"5", "id":"63869" }, { ... }], "items_last_three_months": [ { "cost":"5.00", "thumbnail":"http://s3.envato.com/files/195638.jpg", "url":"http://activeden.net/item/image-logo-shiner-effect/55085", "sales":"641", "item":"image logo shiner effect", "rating":"5", "id":"55085" }, { "cost":"15.00", "thumbnail":"http://s3.envato.com/files/180749.png", "url":"http://activeden.net/item/banner-rotator-with-auto-delay-time/22243", "sales":"533", "item":"BANNER ROTATOR with Auto Delay Time", "rating":"5", "id":"22243"}, { ... }] } } It can be accessed here as well, although it because it's quite a long string, I've trimmed the above down to display what is needed. Basically, I want to be able to access the items from "items_last_week" and create a list of them - originally my plan was to have the 'thumbnail' on the left with the 'item' next to it, but from playing around with the SDK today it appears too difficult or impossible to achieve this, so I would be more than happy with just having the 'item' data from 'items_last_week' in the list. Coming from php I'm struggling to use any of the JSON libraries which are available to Java, as it appears to be much more than a line of code which I will need to deserialize (I think that's the right word) the JSON, and they all appear to require some form of additional class, apart from the JSONArray/JSONObject script I have which doesn't like the fact that items_last_week is nested (again, I think that's the JSON terminology) and takes an awful long time to run on the Android emulator. So, in effect, I need a (preferably simple) way to pass the items_last_week data to a ListView. I understand I will need a custom adapter which I can probably get my head around but I cannot understand, no matter how much of the day I've just spent trying to figure it out, how to access certain parts of a JSON string..

  • Add gridlines to a output plot in Mathemaitca

    - by xslittlegrass
    I'm trying to add gridlines to a output density plot in Mathematica. The plot is generated by a long calculation in Mathematica and when I do the plot I forget to add the Mesh-True options. I don't want to do all the calculation and generate the plot again since it takes a long time. Is that possible to add the gridlines or mesh lines to plot ONLY using the output plot at hand? For example, If I have a plot p. Is it possible to add the mesh lines ONLY manipulate p? In a ordinary one dimensional plot, this will work p1 = Plot[Sin[x], {x, -3, 3}]; Insert[p1, GridLines -> Automatic, -1] But when I try the density plot, it seems the gridlines is always under the plot, and can be seen only at the image margin area. p2 = DensityPlot[Sin[x + y^2], {x, -3, 3}, {y, -2, 2}, PlotRangePadding -> 0.2]; Insert[p2, GridLines -> Automatic, -1] Updata The Mesh option on the output plot will not work because Mesh is not a options of a Graphics: Show[p2,Mesh->True] will give a message "an unrecoginzed option name(Mesh) was encountered while rendering a Graphics" Thanks.

I am not really interested in the having the base object .NET object methods like GetType(), Equals(), etc. But GetType() seems to be causing problems. Some google research indicates I could #import MSCORLIB.TLB (or put it in path), but I can't get that to compile either. Any tips?

  • Php index page utitlizing an idea for a superswitch...

    - by Matt
    I dont know if this is a great idea...or a crap one. But I was thinking I may use one page to display all my pages using includes. Here is what my index.php would look like...on the functions include there is a function called "superSwitch" which will determine what requested page will be included....for instance if I do a get ?a=a it will goto the function superSwitch(a) superSwitch will take it and associate it with (login.php) then respond with such... here is the code for the index.php...please let me know if this makes sense and might work, or should I just stick to long blocks of code (which is why I am trying this because I hate long pages full of code...) of course as you can tell it is not actually including anything yet...the print is for debugging purposes. :) Thanks, Matt <?php //includes Functions include_once('inc/func.inc.php'); //set superget variable $superget = @$_GET['a']; //check if superget is set or null if (!$superget) { echo "Nothing Requested :)"; } else { //sanitizes the superget request $supergetr = supergetSanitize($superget) //uses the result "good" or "nogood" to determine what happens if ( $supergetr == "good" ) { //pulls superSwitch value of the request $ssresult = superSwitch($superget); print_r ($ssresult); } //if the sanitize is nogood else { //the superSwitch is instructed to respond with a 404 page $superget = "404" $ssresult = superSwitch($superget); print_r ($ssresult); } } ?>

  • JPA joined column allow every value...

    I'm testing JPA, in a simple case File/FileVersions tables (Master/Details), with OneToMany relation, I have this problem: in FileVersions table, the field "file_id" (responsable for the relation with File table) accepts every values, not only values from File table. How can I use the JPA mapping to limit the input in FileVersion.file_id only for values existing in File.id? My class are File and FileVersion: FILE CLASS @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY) @Column(name="FILE_ID") private Long id; @Column(name="NAME", nullable = false, length = 30) private String name; //RELATIONS ------------------------------------------- @OneToMany(mappedBy="file", fetch=FetchType.EAGER) private Collection <FileVersion> fileVersionsList; //----------------------------------------------------- FILEVERSION CLASS @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.IDENTITY) @Column(name="VERSION_ID") private Long id; @Column(name="FILENAME", nullable = false, length = 255) private String fileName; @Column(name="NOTES", nullable = false, length = 200) private String notes; //RELATIONS ------------------------------------------- @ManyToOne(fetch=FetchType.EAGER) @JoinColumn(name="FILE_ID", referencedColumnName="FILE_ID", nullable=false) private File file; //----------------------------------------------------- and this is the FILEVERSION TABLE CREATE TABLE `JPA-Support`.`FILEVERSION` ( `VERSION_ID` bigint(20) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `FILENAME` varchar(255) NOT NULL, `NOTES` varchar(200) NOT NULL, `FILE_ID` bigint(20) NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`VERSION_ID`), KEY `FK_FILEVERSION_FILE_ID` (`FILE_ID`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM AUTO_INCREMENT=4 DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1

  • Can I interrupt javascript code and then continue on a keystroke?

    - by Brian Ramsay
    I am porting an old game from C to Javascript. I have run into an issue with display code where I would like to have the main game code call display methods without having to worry about how those status messages are displayed. In the original code, if the message is too long, the program just waits for the player to toggle through the messages with the spacebar and then continues. This doesn't work in javascript, because while I wait for an event, all of the other program code continues. I had thought to use a callback so that further code can execute when the player hits the designated key, but I can't see how that will be viable with a lot of calls to display.update(msg) scattered throughout the code. Can I architect things differently so the event-based, asynchronous model works, or is there some other solution that would allow me to implement a more traditional event loop? Am I making sense? Example: // this is what the original code does, but obviously doesn't work in Javascript display = { update : function(msg) { // if msg is too long // wait for user input // ok, we've got input, continue } }; // this is more javascript-y... display = { update : function(msg, when_finished) { // show part of the message $(document).addEvent('keydown', function(e) { // display the rest of the message when_finished(); }); } }; // but makes for amazingly nasty game code do_something(param, function() { // in case do_something calls display I have to // provide a callback for everything afterwards // this happens next, but what if do_the_next_thing needs to call display? // I have to wait again do_the_next_thing(param, function() { // now I have to do this again, ad infinitum } }

  • Visual Studio Linked Files Directory Structure

    - by jeffn825
    I have two versions of a project. One for Silverlight and one for .NET. The SL project has the vast majority of the code base in it. I want to globally add all files from the SL project into the .NET version as linked files. I've managed to do so successfully like this in the csproj file for the .NET version: <Compile Include="..\MyProj.Common.SL\**\*.cs" Exclude="..\MyProj.Common\Properties\**"> Unfortunately, this adds all the files right to the root of my project... so I end up with a long unreadable list of linked files in the .NET project. I really really really don't want to have to maintain an entire duplicate directory structure by hand and deal with directory name changes and file name changes and whatnot. So, is there any way to have Visual Studio preserve the directory structure when adding linked files in the wildcard manner above? Or is there at least a way of making it group all the linked files together under a directory in the .NET project like MyProj.Common.SL.Links? The very closest I've come is to set the <Visible>false</Visible> under the <Compile> tag, which effectively removes the long unreadable list of 300+ files....but unfortunately this screws up Resharper, which no longer sees those files as valid and it goes crazy on all the projects that reference the .NET project. If I could figure out a way of making Resharper not get all messed up, that would be an acceptable solution too... Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • find word and score based on positions

    - by ryder1211212
    hey guys i have a textfile i have divided it into 4 parts. i want to search each part for the words that appear in each part and score that word exmaple welcome to the national basketball finals,the basketball teams here today have come a long way. without much delay lets play basketball. i will want to return national = 1 as it appears only in one part etc am working on determining text context using word position. am working with c# and not very good in text processing basically if a word appears in the 4 sections it scores 4 if a word appears in the 3 sections it scores 3 if a word appears in the 2 sections it scores 2 if a word appears in the 1 section it scores 1 thanks in advance so far i have this var s = "welcome to the national basketball finals,the basketball teams here today have come a long way. without much delay lets play basketball. "; var numberOfParts = 4; var eachPartLength = s.Length / numberOfParts; var parts = new List<string>(); var words = Regex.Split(s, @"\W").Where(w => w.Length > 0); // this splits all words, removes empty strings var wordsIndex = 0; for (int i = 0; i < numberOfParts; i++) { var sb = new StringBuilder(); while (sb.Length < eachPartLength && wordsIndex < words.Count()) { sb.AppendFormat("{0} ", words.ElementAt(wordsIndex)); wordsIndex++; } // here you have the part Response.Write("[{0}]"+ sb); parts.Add(sb.ToString()); var allwords = parts.SelectMany(p => p.Split(' ').Distinct()); var wordsInAllParts = allwords.Where(w => parts.All(p => p.Contains(w))).Distinct();

  • From where starts the process' memory space and where does it end?

    - by nhaa123
    Hi, I'm trying to dump memory from my application where the variables lye. Here's the function: void MyDump(const void *m, unsigned int n) { const unsigned char *p = reinterpret_cast<const unsigned char *(m); char buffer[16]; unsigned int mod = 0; for (unsigned int i = 0; i < n; ++i, ++mod) { if (mod % 16 == 0) { mod = 0; std::cout << " | "; for (unsigned short j = 0; j < 16; ++j) { switch (buffer[j]) { case 0xa: case 0xb: case 0xd: case 0xe: case 0xf: std::cout << " "; break; default: std::cout << buffer[j]; } } std::cout << "\n0x" << std::setfill('0') << std::setw(8) << std::hex << (long)i << " | "; } buffer[i % 16] = p[i]; std::cout << std::setw(2) << std::hex << static_cast<unsigned int(p[i]) << " "; if (i % 4 == 0 && i != 1) std::cout << " "; } } Now, how can I know from which address starts my process memory space, where all the variables are stored? And how do I now, how long the area is? For instance: MyDump(0x0000 /* <-- Starts from here? */, 0x1000 /* <-- This much? */); Best regards, nhaa123

  • Good PHP / MYSQL hashing solution for large number of text values

    - by Dave
    Short descriptio: Need hashing algorithm solution in php for large number of text values. Long description. PRODUCT_OWNER_TABLE serial_number (auto_inc), product_name, owner_id OWNER_TABLE owner_id (auto_inc), owener_name I need to maintain a database of 200000 unique products and their owners (AND all subsequent changes to ownership). Each product has one owner, but an owner may have MANY different products. Owner names are "Adam Smith", "John Reeves", etc, just text values (quite likely to be unicode as well). I want to optimize the database design, so what i was thinking was, every week when i run this script, it fetchs the owner of a proudct, then checks against a table i suppose similar to PRODUCT_OWNER_TABLE, fetching the owner_id. It then looks up owner_id in OWNER_TABLE. If it matches, then its the same, so it moves on. The problem is when its different... To optimize the database, i think i should be checking against the other "owner_name" entries in OWNER_TABLE to see if that value exists there. If it does, then i should use that owner_id. If it doesnt, then i should add another entry. Note that there is nothing special about the "name". as long as i maintain the correct linkagaes AND make the OWNER_TABLE "read-only, append-new" type table - I should be able create a historical archive of ownership. I need to do this check for 200000 entries, with i dont know how many unique owner names (~50000?). I think i need a hashing solution - the OWNER_TABLE wont be sorted, so search algos wont be optimal. programming language is PHP. database is MYSQL.

  • Getting zeros between data while reading a binary file in C

    - by indiajoe
    I have a binary data which I am reading into an array of long integers using a C programme. hexdump of the binary data shows, that after first few data points , it starts again at a location 20000 hexa adresses away. hexdump output is as shown below. 0000000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 * 0020000 0000 0000 0053 0000 0064 0000 006b 0000 0020010 0066 0000 0068 0000 0066 0000 005d 0000 0020020 0087 0000 0059 0000 0062 0000 0066 0000 ........ and so on... But when I read it into an array 'data' of long integers. by the typical fread command fread(data,sizeof(*data),filelength/sizeof(*data),fd); It is filling up with all zeros in my data array till it reaches the 20000 location. After that it reads in data correctly. Why is it reading regions where my file is not there? Or how will I make it read only my file, not anything inbetween which are not in file? I know it looks like a trivial problem, but I cannot figure it out even after googling one night.. Can anyone suggest me where I am doing it wrong? Other Info : I am working on a gnu/linux machine. (slax-atma distro to be specific) My C compiler is gcc.

  • SQL Server - stored procedure suddenly become slow

    - by Barguast
    I have written a stored procedure that, yesterday, typically completed in under a second. Today, it takes about 18 seconds. I ran into the problem yesterday as well, and it seemed to be solved by DROPing and re-CREATEing the stored procedure. Today, that trick doesn't appear to be working. :( Interestingly, if I copy the body of the stored procedure and execute it as a straightforward query it completes quickly. It seems to be the fact that it's a stored procedure that's slowing it down...! Does anyone know what the problem might be? I've searched for answers, but often they recommend running it through Query Analyser, but I don't have have it - I'm using SQL Server 2008 Express for now. The stored procedure is as follows; ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[spGetPOIs] @lat1 float, @lon1 float, @lat2 float, @lon2 float, @minLOD tinyint, @maxLOD tinyint, @exact bit AS BEGIN -- Create the query rectangle as a polygon DECLARE @bounds geography; SET @bounds = dbo.fnGetRectangleGeographyFromLatLons(@lat1, @lon1, @lat2, @lon2); -- Perform the selection if (@exact = 0) BEGIN SELECT [ID], [Name], [Type], [Data], [MinLOD], [MaxLOD], [Location].[Lat] AS [Latitude], [Location].[Long] AS [Longitude], [SourceID] FROM [POIs] WHERE NOT ((@maxLOD < [MinLOD]) OR (@minLOD > [MaxLOD])) AND (@bounds.Filter([Location]) = 1) END ELSE BEGIN SELECT [ID], [Name], [Type], [Data], [MinLOD], [MaxLOD], [Location].[Lat] AS [Latitude], [Location].[Long] AS [Longitude], [SourceID] FROM [POIs] WHERE NOT ((@maxLOD < [MinLOD]) OR (@minLOD > [MaxLOD])) AND (@bounds.STIntersects([Location]) = 1) END END The 'POI' table has an index on MinLOD, MaxLOD, and a spatial index on Location.
